The good news is there are communities trying to change the narrative and the practice. Jessica Hutchings and Jo Smith have co-authored a new book Pataka Kai highlighting the work small scale indigenous food growers across New Zealand and the Pacific are doing to create a sustainable food ecosystem and take back control. For some time now I've been wanting to talk to someone on the show who manages the marketing - and the profiles - of restaurants. I'm interested in how eateries, especially the top shops, market themselves. This is particularly tricky in a world where everyone seems to be a critic and even the very best operators can find themselves at the mercy of 'keyboard warriors'. While people have a legitimate right to tackle venues on poor service or experiences - balance, good judgement and manners are often left at the door in the online world we navigate. Then there are those who may never have set foot in your shop who will weigh in with their 'opinion', and hack at you about anything from pricing to menu choices, labour practices or the car you drive. It's an issue constantly on the minds of restaurateurs. Jo Smith runs Pillar9 and describes herself as a Reputation Strategist. I've chatted to a few of her clients on the show, and started nagging a while back about getting her on to talk about what she does. I learned a lot about what it takes to build and manage the reputation of a restaurant, and picked up a classic new word: 'bandwagonism'. When you want good things to happen, you must endeavor for them at any cost.  Many people are afraid to attempt a goal when it presents them with choices where they have to let go of what is currently in hand.  The cliche, a bird in hand is worth more than two in a bushel, is easier to accept than taking a blind leap into the unknown.  It may seem like there is nothing more significant than this. For instance, it is the dread of not knowing what lies ahead, what's on the finish line, and the terror of starting something different that causes hesitation. We must understand that sometimes life could require us to take a step forward into some risky places to achieve our ultimate purpose. In some instances that problematic situation appears in front of us to help us to have faith in someone more significant than ourselves and more potent than we can be.    Mr. Kenneth Smith is an author, educator, and entrepreneur. He is a husband, a father, and the CEO of I am possible enterprises. He is known as "Coach Jo-Jo" in the Akron, Ohio, community. He has been a youth life coach promoting healthy mental and physical health for the past 18 years. Using education and athletic experiences, he is inspired to spread the message of infinite possibilities.   In this special episode with Kenneth Smith, we'll learn about the life journey of a man who was able to take a step forward for his life's ultimate goal. He is eager to chase his dreams, follow God's leading, and is now sharing his story worldwide.    "You have to have to go for it. Going for it doesn't necessarily mean quitting a job. It means that you have to sacrifice as you did when you were a former athlete; you had to sacrifice for the team or whatever you did to achieve the ultimate goal. You have to figure out what that is, and then start putting yourself in a position to take advantage of those opportunities." - Mr. Kenneth Smith   Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Introduction + Episode Snippet (00:00:10) Introducing our special guest, Mr. Kenneth Smith (00:00:31) Advertisement: Zero Gravity Skin: a leader in the aesthetic device market. It might get you to the top, but they're not going to keep you on top."- Dr. Derrick Burgess   "You can't just skip the process. It's the day-by-day grind. It's where you learn and where you separate yourself from other people." - Mr. Kenneth Smith   "They (the labeled "difficult kids") were living some difficult lives and things that adults put in front of them that they had no control over. So, I had different patience and understanding in trying to help them get into a different space. It's to have an understanding of where they are and try to help them advance." - Mr. Kenneth Smith   " Kids aren't going to open up and tell you things about themselves that aren't positive. They don't even trust the adults who have been in their lives, so why would they just come directly in and start sharing these vulnerable situations with you? You have to build up to that." - Mr. Kenneth Smith   "If you're fair, affirm, and consistent, kids will respect you and have your boundaries. And I allowed myself to be human with them, and we learned and grew from each other. We had a lot of fun." - Mr. Kenneth Smith   "I am possible because "I AM," for the believers out there that know God is spirit, God shall be known as I AM. That's told to us in the Bible. And I knew the power of God." - Mr. Kenneth Smith   "For many people, the pandemic was a time that the world kind of slowed down and allowed them to do a lot of introspective learning about themselves or maybe develop ways to present a course or present even speaking on a virtual platform." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   "Spirituality was always a part of my life and a big part of my life. I'm delighted to introduce you to Jo Smith of Naturally Well with Jo. She is one of the most down to earth people I know, which is no doubt helped by the fact that she literally has her hands in the earth every day. Jo created an incredible market garden on Tasmania's Bruny Island, which feeds not only her family, but the local community, cafes and restaurants. She's also a yoga teacher, and a great friend to women, with a passion to help people reconnect with themselves, each other and the earth. She's also the mum of two gorgeous twinnies (as she calls them). In our chat, I found myself drawn to reconnect with the earth and afterwards I went outside and took my shoes off, just to feel the earth beneath me. I'm sure you'll love Jo as I do. You can find her on instagram and facebook: @naturallywellwithjo

We really wanted to go one step further and understand what came out of these research projets. The result is a great interview with Sally Westaway and Jo Smith where we discuss interactions between crops and trees, the productivity of agroforestry and the results of their trials on wood chips. There are many fascinating corners of Southeast Asia to explore, from the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia to the islands of Vietnam’s Con Dao archipelago and the spectacular topography of Thailand’s Ang Thong National Marine Park. Unfortunately, many are increasingly (or were, before COVID-19) overrun with travelers, with no discernible strategy for sustainable tourism in place. One wonderful exception is the ancient royal capital and former French colonial outpost of Luang Prabang, at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers in the north of Laos.Despite receiving plenty of luxury jet-setters and budget-strapped backpackers, Luang Prabang retains its many-layered charm. That’s thanks in part to some extraordinary tourism-based businesses that incorporate community development, cultural education, and environmental initiatives into the way they conduct their affairs. On this episode, we talk to Jo Smith about Ock Pop Tok, the textile workshop and visitor center she and her Lao partner, Veomanee Douangdala, established there over a decade ago, and why it’s important to preserve traditional crafts from the area. Next up is a discussion with Susie Martin, the Australian expat who co-founded the Laos Buffalo Dairy, which not only produces delicious cheeses and ice creams for restaurants in town, but does so with a sustainable business model that helps local farmers breed and care for their animals. Finally, co-founder Michael Vogler tells us why they embrace a no-riding approach on the treks they offer at MandaLao Elephant Conservation.Visit our Instagram feed @conscioustravelerpod for images from Eric’s visits to these wonderful outfits. And follow @ockpoptok to check out some drool-worthy handmade textiles, @laosbuffalodairy to see the cute little calves and their moms, and @mandalao_elephants for pictures of the elephants out on their daily rounds.

Thanks to our sponsor: The Yarn Collective This episode of the podcast is sponsored by The Yarn Collective, a fibre and design company focused on working with independent designers to bring you luxurious hand-dyed yarns in a range of inspiring colourways. These international designers represent the best of modern knitwear design and include Bristol Ivy, Melanie Berg, Carol Feller and Michele Wang. Each designer has created and curated a distinctive and wonderful line for The Yarn Collective. You can find out more about the yarns by visiting www.theyarncollective.com.  GLYC Recap 10 teams, 18 volunteers, 12 door prizes, 12 shops, £341 for Refuge and two big bags of handknits plus another bag of supplies for Knit for Peace. Thanks to all the shops, our sponsors - Willow & Lark, Blue Sky Fibers, Debonnaire, Liberty, Loop, Kelbourne Woolens, Rowan at Liberty, Soak, SweetGeorgia, The Little Grey Girl, Tribe, Walcot Yarns and the Yarn Collective – plus the amazing group of volunteers who shepherded the Yarn Crawlers through some tough transport challenges and all the folks who joined us this year!  What we’re working on Allison's secret project is ongoing, and she’s started the Tullameen Mystery KAL for SweetGeorgia with new colours! She’s also working on “renovating” her office.        Rachel has finally finished and blocked the Kippen Cardigan, but it looks to be a bit too small so will likely go to her mother. Fully bitten by the crochet bug, she's cast on a cowl in some unknown yarn, and is now obsessively crocheting so can cast on another cowl in handspun. Yarnporium KAL We are thrilled to have announced the projects for our Yarnporium KAL! The knit project is Karie Westerman’s brand new Béton Brut Shawl, designed in Walcot Yarns Opus. For the crocheters out there, we’re recommending the Filigree Tippet by Jo Smith also designed for Opus Walcot Yarns special offer: 10% off your order with the code YarnporiumKAL2018 at walcotyarns.com. Offer runs through 30 September, and is a single use only. The KAL kicks off on 15 September and wraps up on October 30, giving you just enough time to block your shawl for the Yarnporium! We’ll be doing a live cast on party on Instagram at 1 pm on September 15th – come join in, and come on over to the Yarnporium Countdown KAL thread in the Yarn in the City Ravelry group. Woolly Yarns In this episode, we review Marina Skua Mendip 4-ply, a hand-dyed yarn on two woollen-spun bases, Sunny and Stormy. Marina uses the same colours on both bases to make coordinated pairs, and this toothy yarn is perfect for colourwork and steeking! Many thanks for joining us for another episode! In this episode we are chat with Jo Smith who shares so many inspiring tips on how to live more consciously. She is trained as a holistic food coach, yoga instructor and personal trainer and lives on a beautiful island just outside of Tasmania. Jo shares her personal story, where we quickly learn that her issues with food were extreme in her early 20's, including her obsession with dieting and weight loss supplements. She discusses the negative health consequences that came as a result of her toxic lifestyle. These days Jo has completely transformed herself from the inside out, she even has her own property, growing most of her own food. She absolutely loves to empower women to take charge of their health, put themselves first and overcome body image issues. Jo recognises the same toxic patterns in other women that she used to endure and helps them to nourish their bodies holistically. We talk about how to ethically source meat and the importance of buying from local farmers that care about their livestock (right from birth to dinner plate). Jo shares tips on where to start out and specific questions to ask your local butcher. We also get pretty excited about the amazing advantages of buying ethically sourced meat in bulk. We dive into the benefits of starting up your own local co-op and the great connections that come out of it. Understating the True Image of God - a look at the feminineGen 1:27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.Gen 2:18-23And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."  Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.  So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man."James and Denise Jordon - http://www.fatherheart.net/God's Image - Encompasses the Masculine and Feminine, not in regards to gender, but attributes, attributes of God given to man, unique to each personTogether there is strength, division brings weaknessExperiencing the fullness of both, allows us to be.  Allows us to receive, allows us to respond to God, allows us to respond to others, to nurture, to rest.Effects of the sin, Gen 3:1-7.- Eyes were not open until they both ate- Before, every desire and need was met, suddenly there were needs which were not met (nakedness), and there was a relationship with separation (they hid) Relationship between Woman and the serpent, Gen 3:13-15.  There is now war against woman; she represents the feminine attributes, an expression of this curse.
