Is herbalism important postpartum? YES! Is the postpartum period sacred? YES!! Herbs have supported our grandmothers and our grandmothers' grandmothers throughout the ages during the tender and sacred time of the postpartum period. Herbs help the milk come, help the womb return, help the mother's heart stay steady and help the restoration of life force, blood and nutrients that a mother needs after growing a person inside her. This episode is very personal as I'm due to give birth on the day it's released. This photo is me with my daughter 3 years ago - the day after giving birth to her. This time out of time is precious, as it marks the return to the world for the mother who had to travel so far to give birth, and also the arrival in the world of the baby. It is a time when the mother needs epic amounts of support and nourishment, and who better to offer this than the plants who have walked beside us for aeons? This episode covers herbs and strategies to support the four pillars of postpartum thriving: rest, nourishment, soothing and healing. In this episode I give special mentions to Nettle, Motherwort, Lemon Balm and Ladies Mantle. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) has garnered significant attention for its potential to promote psychological well-being. Research suggests that this herb may exert anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, improve sleep quality, and enhance cognitive function. These benefits are attributed to its diverse phytochemical profile, including compounds like rosmarinic acid, citral, and terpenes. While further rigorous clinical trials are needed, preliminary studies indicate that lemon balm may offer a safe and effective non-pharmacological approach for managing mild to moderate psychological concerns. #LemonBalm #mood #anxiety Mathews IM, Eastwood J, Lamport DJ, Cozannet RL, Fanca-Berthon P, Williams CM. Diana Condylas is a community connector, food lover, plant lover and plastic activist. Growing up in a multicultural family, she was used to herbs being used medicinally and in cooking. She practiced as a naturopath, herbalist, nutritionist and massage therapist for 12 years until having babies. Permaculture came into her life in Sydney in 2007 and transformed how she saw and processed the world. In 2010, Diana returned to Townsville after a few years away and founded the Food for Thought - Townsville community, with an intention of finding her tribe, successfully. With an active Facebook group and gatherings of people sharing meals and produce, as well as workshops, speakers and movie screenings, she loved the connections made between members of the community that have rippled out beyond Townsville. As of 2020, Diana has been the Project Coordinator for NFP Boomerang Alliance's Plastic Free Places NQ (formerly known as Plastic Free Townsville), assisting local takeaway hospitality businesses, events and organisations to eliminate over 1.5 million pieces of single-use plastic cups, lids and other packaging. She wants her children to be healthy, enjoy and care for the world, and understand that we all need to minimise our impact to make it fair for everyone. She recently won People's Choice in a vegan sausage roll bake off and loves picking fresh mint from her garden and making it into ‘aguita de menta' tea as a pause and a tonic. Takeaways: Permaculture is a versatile design system that can be applied to all aspects of life. Plants and herbalism can be integrated into daily life, even without a garden. Lemon balm is a versatile and nourishing herb that can be used for various health benefits. Plastic Free Places NQ helps businesses and events eliminate single-use plastics and transition to reusable solutions. Circularity and reusable solutions are vital in reducing plastic pollution. Plastic Free July is a global movement encouraging individuals and organisations to reduce plastic consumption. Consumer awareness and behaviour change are crucial to eliminating single-use plastics. The Plastic Free Places program is a resource for finding plastic-free businesses and events. Using renewable resources, such as banana leaves and papaya stems, can be an alternative to plastic plates and straws. Every small action contributes to a cleaner and healthier world. Menopause marks the end of menstrual cycles and is typically confirmed 12 months after your last period. Lemon balm, or Melissa officinalis, is a member of the Lamiaceae family, along with mint, rosemary, marjoram, sage, basil, and lavender. Its popular name comes from the fact the leaves smell of lemon when crushed. In contemporary witchcraft, balm makes a popular ingredient in incense used for healing, reducing grief, or boosting the memory. It's also a plant that appears in folk remedies and herbalism alike, without accruing much folklore as an actual plant. Let's find out more in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! SO MANY PEOPLE need to know about "The Relationship Between Low GABA and Alcohol Addiction." It's a vicious relationship where each disorder can cause and affect the other. For example, someone with a GABA bankruptcy in their brain might have intense cravings for red wine every evening after work and then become alcohol-addicted after a few months of habitual drinking… … or someone with alcohol dependence develops a GABA bankruptcy from repeated consumption of alcohol (in contrast, their natural GABA levels were optimal before addiction). After learning about this notorious accord between two devastating disorders and how to boost GABA naturally, you'll be well on your way to restoring your mind/body health and elevating your GABA to optimal levels. This episode is an abridged version of the full-length article on Fit Recovery, which has the same title. Here are the topics of this episode: What is GABA? Responsible Parent Podcast: There's an herb for that pt. 2 Summary This episode is part two of a conversation with herbalist Jim McDonald about using herbs for natural nervous system regulation. Making teas: Chamomile, spearmint, lemon balm, orange peel are good choices. Tinctures can be used instead of teas, but alcohol content is minimal. Growing your own herbs: Many herbs are easy to grow at home, and some like lemon balm can be quite prolific. Using safe herbs: When using herbs, especially during pregnancy or lactation, it's important to research potential interactions and consult with a qualified herbalist, not just a medical doctor. Learning about herbs: There are many resources available for learning about herbs, but be sure to choose reliable sources from experienced herbalists. Wildcrafting herbs: Burdock root is a good example of a wildcrafted herb. When wildcrafting, it's important to find safe locations away from roads and potential contaminants. Books by Samuel Thayer are recommended as a good resource for learning about foraging for edible wild plants. Key takeaways Herbs can be a safe and natural way to support your nervous system. There are many ways to use herbs, including teas, tinctures, and culinary applications. It's important to learn about herbs before using them, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Welcome back to another exciting episode of our podcast! In this instalment, we embark on a journey of transformation, from repurposing a Belfast sink into a herbal tea bed to exploring the veg gardens of RHS Hyde Hall. Join us as we delve into the joys of gardening and culinary delights! Creating a Herbal Tea Bed in an Old Belfast Sink We kick off the episode by diving into the process of transforming an old Belfast sink into a flourishing herbal tea bed. I was set the challenge to create a herbal tea bed. After doing a lot of research I decided to use a Belfast sink I was recently donated. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Linda: Hello! I can't run due to injuries. I use a stationary bike for cardio. How can I do a V02Max test with the stationary bike? Thank you! Jen: I am getting Dyshidrosis on my hands and it seems to be spreading. What are some root causes of this and where should I start in treating this? Sandra: Hello doctor Cabral, I'm a 45 yo woman, and lately I have been waking up drenched in sweat in the middle of the night. What could be the cause, and what can I do about it? I'm a 45 year old woman, with a healthy (plant-based) lifestyle. regular strength training and regular menstruation. Thanks so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it Tom: Hi Doctor Cabral. My son is 26 and suffers with severe OCD to the point where it is debilitating and affects his relationship with his girlfriend hugely. He is always interrogating her asking “what did you mean by that comment” at the most insignificant things and I can see it's killing both him and her because he can't help it. He's had these OCD traits since he was a young boy but they seemed to worsen significantly after the covid vaccine where he began to develop health anxiety too. He is also covered in tattoos, smokes and vapes daily (was thinking maybe heavy metals may relate?) I'm trying to convince him that lifestyle has an impact on neurotransmitters and mental health but he won't listen. Is there any info on lifestyle / diet and OCD? Thanks so much! Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral. I sincerely appreciate all the work you do in supporting others through information about natural intervention. I wanted to ask about Herpes outbreaks. I have listened to your podcast #760 several times. You speak about how to treat cold sores topically and I wondered if you could advise on treating herpes sores on genital areas topically. I have read a lot about Lemon Balm. Do you have any advice on what can be used to ease sores? From now on, the ‘In Search of Insight' will also feature video, in order to create a more immersive experience in which we can learn more about supplements together. An episode about cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G), seemed appropriate for our first foray into videoland, because of its mesmerizing purple color! C3G is a purple pigment found in large quantities in various types of berries, red wine, vegetables like purple sweet potatoes, and grains such as black rice. In fact, black rice is probably one of the richest sources of C3G, and due to this, we derived our high-potency C3G from black rice. Within these food sources, C3G produces lots of different health benefits, most notably acting as an oxidation and inflammation regulating agent. However, in higher doses, as can be found in our C3G supplement, some very interesting properties appear! One of the main uses of C3G has been as a body recomposition tool in the bodybuilding world. C3G pulls this off by reducing fat stores and maximizing muscle growth. This means that C3G can help us become leaner and more muscular, which is every bodybuilder's dream! For others, the body recomposition effects really come in handy to optimize our overall metabolic function, helping us to get the most benefits from our food by taking advantage of C3G's nutrient partitioning effects. One aspect of C3G that is often overlooked however, is its nootropics effects. When we were first beta-testing C3G, this is the first thing that stood out to us. When the C3G started to kick in, we got a slew of classic nootropic effects, such as a widening and crisping of our vision, a sharp mental clarity, and a sense of focus and drive. This is due to C3G's effects on monoamine oxidase enzymes, PGC-1alpha, and blood flow. It even helps boost the effects of caffeine, which we show off in a fun and engaging manner during this podcast! If you want to learn more about C3G's body recomposition and nootropic effects, while also getting to know us better, then tune into our first ever video episode of ‘In Search of Insight'! The Little Herb Saver: Lemon balm is like a blanket of peace, calming a nervous stomach, reducing anxiety, elevating a gloomy feeling, and providing relief for sleepless nights. That's a lot, but that's also not all. Lemon balm is easy to grow, lovely to eat or drink as tea, powerful in its own right but not in a way that lends caution to using it. To get more lemon balm into our lives, can only be a good thing. And this is why I deem it a little herbal saver. Thank you for joining me for this part 2 lemon balm monograph. (Episode 52 is part 1) Lemon Balm Vinaigrette: 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon dijon mustard 1 teaspoon chopped lemon balm Salt and pepper to taste Combine olive oil, lemon juice, red wine vinegar and dijon mustard. Whisk together until blended well. Stir in chopped lemon balm and salt and pepper. Store in the refrigerator. Serve with fennel and radish salads. Today I am sharing my personal reflections after taking Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis, for one month as part of a plant dieta experience. I have used Lemon Balm for over 20 years. However, I learned so much more about this plant's nuances over this month and through the shared experiences of my students from the Roots and Spheres course. Some of the themes of Lemon Balm were a sense of calm amidst chaos, restraint in anxiety, bee symbolism, and many circumstances where I was able to feel into the moment rather than overreact. I hope you find this video helpful, and if you struggle with anxiety, try Lemon Balm! Since you're at the Comedian's house today, you can help us get ready for Family Camp next week. John is scheduled to deliver four talks, plus games and activities, so we need to figure out which topics to cover with the campers. There are lots of opportunities for "inside jokes" and call-backs! -Good improv works because comedy is built into the game... and guess Who built comedy into the Game of Life? -In order to do comedy better, learn to ask lots of questions. -Tell kids the truth... (You have to understand what's true in order to make jokes about it.) If all of this seems a bit disjointed and random, it's because we still have some polishing to do before next week! What else should we cover in our presentations, Neighbor? Which bits of wisdom/advice from The Comedian have been most helpful to you?
