I have been feeling a little bit distant lately. Like some sort of anxious attachment distant. Avoidant even. While trying to not be too clingy or handsy with the land, I have slipped into a disconnection, being one that just observes but doesn't participate in the ways that brought me into relationship with so many plants in the first place. I have been feeling this disconnect, and recognizing something had to be done. Then along comes Red Clover. After attending a workshop on edible and medicinal plants I felt called by the Red Clover (Trifolium pratense). Here was a plant that I felt I could harvest without much impact on the populations, or harm to local species who depend on T. pratense. It felt like I could relearn relationships with the broader landscape, incorporating components of taking and consuming - components of relationship making with plants that I have felt conflicted on recently - and therefore helping to heal that separation which has been sneaking in. Since harvesting, I have also been doing deep dives into Red Clover natural history, and ecofunction. It has been a gift from this special plant to learn from them, harvest them, teach about them and drink the tea made from the flowers. That's what this week's show is all about. Today our featured herbs are red clover & damiana – two complementary fluid-moving remedies.Red clover (Trifolium pratense) has a reputation as an herb that “cures breast cancer”. That's not the way we talk or think about it, but it's worth digging in to why people say that! What underlies the claim is an observable effect: the plant can diminish or reduce swellings (and not only in breast tissue). This is due to its capacity to improve the circulation of lymphatic fluid, and that's a good thing – helpful for stagnation patterns and for immune efficiency. But it's still not a “cure”, and it's important for herbalists to be clear about that difference.Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is more of a blood-moving than lymph-moving herb. It's one of our favorite dispersive remedies, for increasing blood flow to the periphery and to the skin. Its affinity for the pelvis and it's capacity to restore or enhance sensitivity in nerve endings contribute to its reputation as an aphrodisiac. It's not about raging lust – it's about relaxation, sensation, and communication!Red clover and damiana both make an appearance in our Integumentary Health course, along with an array of other herbs who help the skin. HEALTH NEWS · Fermented red clover extract stops menopausal hot flushes and symptoms · Resveratrol, quercetin could provide new options for cancer therapy · World's largest study shows the more you walk, the lower your risk of death, even if you walk fewer than 5,000 steps · Brains of overweight people 'ten years older' than lean counterparts at middle-age · Soy protein found to deplete testosterone in men · Study shows endometriosis is linked to higher risk of depression, anxiety, eating disorders Fermented red clover extract stops menopausal hot flushes and symptoms Aarhus University (Denmark), July 24, 2023 The vast majority of women in the menopause are familiar with the status of Red Clover as an herbal medicine that soothes hot flush symptoms and hormonal fluctuations. This holds true, new research shows, if the red clover is taken in a fermented form. Fermented Red Clover extract is demonstrated to decrease significantly both the number and severity of daily hot flushes. The study also found that the extract prevents the normally accelerated menopausal bone loss affecting one in three women over the age of 50 (e.g. results showed treatment blunted bone loss in the spine completely). These findings are very promising as the benefits take place without any of the side effects of traditionally proscribed hormone therapies that increase the risk of cancers and cardiovascular diseases. "It is the fermentation process of the Red Clover extract that makes the difference, as the lactic acid fermentation increases the bioavailability of the bioactive estrogen-like compounds (known as isoflavones or phytoestrogens) that Red Clover has in abundance," explains Max Norman Tandrup Lambert. "The challenge with isoflavones is that they can be difficult to digest as they naturally occur in the plant bound to sugar molecules which prevent absorption. Hence, a large proportion of the isoflavones that are consumed (e.g. as a pill or capsule) can pass through the intestine without entering circulation. This problem is bypassed when the Red Clover extract undergoes a fermentation process. To be technical the process separates the sugar molecules from the isoflavones, thereby increasing bioavailability," explains Max Norman Tandup Lambert. A studyrecruited 130 women with menopause symptoms, of which 60 were selected based on criteria of at least five severe hot flushes per day and blood tests (including FSH, that indicates the "stage" of menopause). "The women were separated into two groups of 30, so 30 drank 150ml Red Clover extract per day for 12 weeks, whilst the other 30 drank a masked placebo product. After 12 weeks we tested again and were speechless about the data. There was a much greater effect than we had hoped for." Says Max Norman Tandrup Lambert. Resveratrol, quercetin could provide new options for cancer therapy Oregon State University, July 16, 2023 Resveratrol and quercetin, two polyphenols that have been widely studied for their health properties, may soon become the basis of an important new advance in cancer treatment, primarily by improving the efficacy and potential use of an existing chemotherapeutic cancer drug. In laboratory experiments, researchers at Oregon State University have developed a system to increase the bioavailability of these compounds in the body by using "copolymers" that make them water soluble and allow their injection into the blood stream, creating levels that are far higher than could ever be obtained by diet or oral intake. The resveratrol and quercetin then appear to reduce the cardiac toxicity of a very widely used cancer drug, Adriamycin. Although highly effective in the treatment of lymphomas, breast, ovarian and other cancers, Adriamycin can only be used for a limited time in humans because of its cardiotoxicity. The co-administration of these polyphenols might allow much more extensive use of this drug, while at the same time improving its efficacy and demonstrating the polyphenols' own anti-cancer properties, scientists said. Findings on this research have been published in the Journal of Controlled Release, by scientists from the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University and the School of Pharmacy at Pacific University. Both institutions supported the research. "The co-administration of high levels of resveratrol and quercetin, in both in vitro and in vivo studies, shows that it significantly reduces the cardiac toxicity of Adriamycin," Alani said. "And these compounds have a synergistic effect that enhances the efficacy of the cancer drug, by sensitizing the cancer cells to the effects of the drug." It's possible, Alani said, that after further research it could be demonstrated that use of these compounds can completely eliminate the cardiotoxicity of Adriamycin, as they scavenge the toxic free radicals produced by use of this drug. It's also possible, he said, that administration of these natural polyphenols could have value in cancer therapy by themselves, or in combination with a wider range of other chemotherapeutic drugs. World's largest study shows the more you walk, the lower your risk of death, even if you walk fewer than 5,000 steps Medical University of Lodz (Poland) & Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, August 8, 2023 The number of steps you should walk every day to start seeing benefits to your health is lower than previously thought, according to the largest analysis to investigate this. The study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, found that walking at least 3967 steps a day started to reduce the risk of dying from any cause, and 2337 steps a day reduced the risk of dying from diseases of the heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular disease). However, the new analysis of 226,889 people from 17 different studies around the world has shown that the more you walk, the greater the health benefits. The risk of dying from any cause or from cardiovascular disease decreases significantly with every 500 to 1000 extra steps you walk. An increase of 1000 steps a day was associated with a 15% reduction in the risk of dying from any cause, and an increase of 500 steps a day was associated with a 7% reduction in dying from cardiovascular disease. The researchers, led by Maciej Banach, Professor of Cardiology at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland, and Adjunct Professor at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, found that even if people walked as many as 20,000 steps a day, the health benefits continued to increase. They have not found an upper limit yet. "Our study confirms that the more you walk, the better," says Prof. Banach. "We found that this applied to both men and women, irrespective of age, and irrespective of whether you live in a temperate, sub-tropical or sub-polar region of the world, or a region with a mixture of climates. In addition, our analysis indicates that as little as 4,000 steps a day are needed to significantly reduce deaths from any cause, and even fewer to reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease." There is strong evidence that a sedentary lifestyle may contribute to an increase in cardiovascular disease and a shorter life. Studies have shown that insufficient physical activity affects more than a quarter of the world's population. More women than men (32% versus 23%), and people in higher income countries compared to low-income countries (37% versus 16%) do not undertake a sufficient amount of physical activity. The studies analyzed by the researchers followed up participants for a median (average) of seven years. The mean (average) age was 64, and 49% of participants were female. In people aged 60 years or older, the size of the reduction in risk of death was smaller than that seen in people aged younger than 60 years. In the older adults, there was a 42% reduction in risk seen in those who walked between 6,000 and 10,000 steps a day, while there was a 49% reduction in risk in younger adults who walked between 7,000 and 13,000 steps a day. Brains of overweight people 'ten years older' than lean counterparts at middle-age University of Cambridge, August 4, 2023 From middle-age, the brains of obese individuals display differences in white matter similar to those in lean individuals ten years their senior, according to new research led by the University of Cambridge. White matter is the tissue that connects areas of the brain and allows for information to be communicated between regions. Our brains naturally shrink with age, but scientists are increasingly recognising that obesity - already linked to conditions such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease - may also affect the onset and progression of brain ageing; however, direct studies to support this link are lacking. The team studied data from 473 individuals between the ages of 20 and 87, recruited by the Cambridge Centre for Aging and Neuroscience. The researchers divided the data into two categories based on weight: lean and overweight. They found striking differences in the volume of white matter in the brains of overweight individuals compared with those of their leaner counterparts. Overweight individuals had a widespread reduction in white matter compared to lean people. They discovered that an overweight person at, say, 50 years old had a comparable white matter volume to a lean person aged 60 years, implying a difference in brain age of 10 years. Strikingly, however, the researchers only observed these differences from middle-age onwards, suggesting that our brains may be particularly vulnerable during this period of ageing. "As our brains age, they naturally shrink in size, but it isn't clear why people who are overweight have a greater reduction in the amount of white matter," says first author Dr Lisa Ronan from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, "We can only speculate on whether obesity might in some way cause these changes or whether obesity is a consequence of brain changes." Soy protein found to deplete testosterone in men University of Connecticut, July 27, 2023 The health detriments of soy consumption are reiterated in a new study out of the University of Connecticut that highlights the importance of avoiding soy at all costs. Researchers from the school found that men who consume soy protein rather than whey protein for muscle recovery and growth experience considerable reductions in their testosterone levels, as well as marked increases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (JACN), the randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study looked at how soy supplementation affects testosterone, cortisol and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels in men who engage in resistance exercises and training. They compared these effects to those brought about in men who supplement with whey. For the research, 10 resistance-trained men in their early 20s had their hormones evaluated in conjunction with an assigned supplemental diet. The men were divided into three groups: one receiving whey protein isolate, one receiving soy protein isolate and the last receiving a maltodextrin-based placebo control. The men were not allowed to take any other supplements, and vegetarians, vegans and individuals who were consuming high-protein diets were excluded. For two weeks, the men were told to ingest 20 grams of their assigned supplement every morning at the same time. The participants were then instructed to perform six sets of heavy resistance squats at 10 reps each, exerting 80 percent of their maximum lifting weight. At the end of the 14-day period, the researchers collected hormone profiles from each of the men and made comparisons. They found that, compared to the men who supplemented with whey, those taking soy did not necessarily produce more estrogen. They did, however, experience decreased testosterone levels and elevated cortisol levels, a deadly combination that can leave men at risk of disease and weight gain. Lowered testosterone levels and elevated cortisol levels are also generally attributed to the feminization phenomenon occurring in men that sometimes leads to disorders like nipple discharge, breast enlargement and hot flashes. It can also lead to inhibited thyroid function, bone loss, sleeping disorders, decreased sex function and reproductive problems. Study shows endometriosis is linked to higher risk of depression, anxiety, eating disorders Yale University, August 7, 2023 Endometriosis is not just a condition that affects the pelvis, but a systemic disease that involves the entire body. Now, the largest epidemiological study to date on the psychiatric factors that can accompany endometriosis has demonstrated that depression, anxiety, and eating disorders are not only a result of the chronic pain endometriosis generates, but also have their own underlying genetic mechanisms. The team published its findings in JAMA Network Open. "The relationship between endometriosis and mental health is more complicated than we expected," says Renato Polimanti, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and the study's principal investigator. "The biological basis is not just chronic pain, and there is much more that we need to understand." Endometriosis is an extremely painful condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. The disease manifests in a wide array of symptoms including pelvic, abdominal, and low back pain, heavy bleeding, painful sexual intercourse, painful urination and bowel movements, constipation or diarrhea, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and infertility. In this new study, the Yale research team obtained data from the UK Biobank which included more than 8,200 patients with endometriosis and 194,000 healthy controls. First, they investigated if depression, anxiety, and eating disorders were more prevalent in those with endometriosis, accounting for chronic pain, socioeconomic status, age, body mass index, various medications, and co-morbid conditions. They found that having endometriosis significantly increases the odds of having these three psychiatric conditions. through running a genetic correlation analysis, they found a significantly high genetic correlation between endometriosis and each of the three disorders.
On this week's episode of the Dairy Edge podcast, Nicky Byrne, Research Officer in Teagasc Grange, discusses the benefits of red clover silage. Nicky explains that red clover has a huge potential to fix nitrogen and dramatically lower the chemical nitrogen input for silage. With yields of 25-26 bales per year, it is producing a significant amount of forage with no chemical nitrogen input. However, red clover silage may not be for every field, and management of it will be critical to maximising its lifespan. It is ideally suited to outblocks that might not be grazed at all or only grazed in the later part of the year. Operations such as grazing or cutting need to take place in good conditions to maximise the lifespan of the clover so for this reason, Nicky would recommend that only a portion of the block is in red clover at any one time in situations where outblocks are providing grazing in the later part of the year. This will allow for grazing of the red clover sward in good conditions with normal grass swards being more resilient for grazing in poorer weather conditions. Cutting date is very important with early May being the target for the 1st cut and subsequent cuts being taken at 6-8 week intervals. Ideally the third cut should be completed in late August/early September while there is a better chance of fine weather to allow for wilting hence the early 1st cut date is important to achieve this objective. Nicky finishes by saying that he would see a proportion of silage ground in red clover as being of benefit to dairy farmers to produce high quality forage to feed back to cows during the shoulders or during weather challenges as intakes on it are good and it may contribute to increased performance as a result of this based on his work in the dairy beef systems trial. An ideal scenario in Nicky's opinion is that farmers would start a 10 year reseeding programme incorporating red clover into it where appropriate, with the expectation of a 4-6 year lifespan of the red clover, with the sward reverting to a normal two cut silage scenario subsequently until reseeded again after the 10 year cycle. Roscommon DairyBeef 500 farmer Martin Connolly is on this week's episode of the Beef Edge podcast to discuss how he incorporated red clover last year into his beef system, the pros, cons, tips and advice he has for anyone considering red clover this year. Martin farms part-time just outside the village of Castleplunket in Co. Roscommon, where he operates a calf-to-bull beef system. The farm consists of 60 ha of grassland in total, which is divided into four main blocks within a 3-mile radius of the farm yard. The land itself can be described as a ‘heavy-type' soil, which would be typical of the area. With input costs, especially feed and fertiliser, increasing drastically this year, Martin explored various cost-saving options that would not only cut costs but also maintain high levels of animal performance. From researching red clover swards, Martin was impressed with its enhanced ability over grass-only swards to maintain high levels of herbage production and animal performance from significantly lower inputs of chemical nitrogen fertiliser. In early June 2022 the decision was made to reseed 10 acres of grass to a ‘red clover sward' to see if these benefits could be obtained in his farming system. DairyBeef500 Conference The Teagasc DairyBeef500 campaign will be running two important conferences on January 19th and January 26th in Clonmel and Charleville. These conferences will be of interest to both dairy farmers who want to produce more saleable calves and beef farmers who have dairy calf to beef enterprises. Presentations on the performance of the DairyBeef500 campaign monitor farmers and the Dairy Beef Demonstration farm in Teagasc Grange will outline the key management decisions to ensure calves perform throughout their life to achieve a high level of profitability on farm. There will be presentations and discussion from both dairy farmers outlining how they have improved the beef merit of their calves and encouraged repeat business from beef farmers and also presentations from calf to beef farmers and on what they look for when purchasing calves from dairy farms. He has created scores, opens, bumpers, and music libraries for a variety of programs, including Ted Lasso, America's Next Top Model, NCIS LA, Dancing With The Stars, The Bachelorette, The Real Housewives of Dallas, and Black Ink Crew: Chicago, as well as for the feature films True Justice, Dragon Eyes, Never Back Down 2, Red Clover. Today, Rick talks about the film Wilkes County Line, how he grew up in a family of musicians, the difference between wisdom and experience, and the keys to personal growth. Musical Family [3:31] Rick produced his first album at the age of 19. His mother was a trained pianist and played at the church. He started playing music when he was in fourth grade because his mother bought a guitar for his sister, but she never played it, but he would sneak around and play it by himself. Creativity [10:46] Rick learned to keep everybody engaged at all times. He thinks of how he can show off at certain parts. But he thinks the most critical is learning to take all that creativity and put it at the right time. Like in business creatives and the "business" side, it must be balanced. As you get older, you realize that you will have this time when you take all the boundaries off and create while working with the budget. Good Management [16:20] In Rick's opinion, the key to leadership is not knowing everything per se but knowing people who do know everything and putting them in the right place. We may not have all the people we want, and we may have to continue looking. It's a never-ending journey that is always developing, organic, and wonderful. That is the beauty of life. Identifying connections and knowing how you can work together to make something. Gifts [18:07] For those who have gifts, Rick thinks the goal is to take it and nurture it and learn how to do better and stronger. What Rick did was work hard and get that gift to grow. That's the easy part, and the hardest part is developing the character to manage the gifting that you've been given. Wilkes County Line [34:06] The most important thing for Rick was the scenery. He is a big nature fan. Everywhere he went, all the things and niches in the county were just amazing to him as an outsider and caught his attention. He thought about how to tell people about the beauty of those areas and suck them into the story. Business Side [45:54] The creative side is the easiest side for Rick. The business side is paying for college, and it's the reality. He wants to put the business side first. How he does it by creating a product that people want to see and pay for. Thinking of how to satisfy our investors and the company. The first thing they do is put things together and look at what the state has and its taxes. Since last Autumn, there's been confusion about the rules governing muck spreading - outlining when and how much farmers can spread on their land. In March, DEFRA released new guidance, allowing autumn spreading, and also allowing farmers to spread more muck than their soil or crop required. The Salmon and Trout Conservation group believed the guidance given to the Environment Agency was essentially encouraging farmers to break the law. It threatened to take DEFRA to judicial review. Now, the government has altered its guidance. The National Farmers Union says it's “disappointed", saying the changes "seemingly prevent some farmers applying organic manures to certain fields.” Red clover is a legume, which fixes nitrogen in the soil. Its flowers attract bees and its leafy growth provides calcium and protein-rich grazing, but fifty years ago research suggested the legume could reduce fertility in sheep. Now, a group of farmers in the Midlands and Wales have been testing these findings. The field trials are being run by the “Innovative Farmers” - a group that links up farmers with scientists - and the agricultural consultancy, ADAS. The conclusion is that the original findings were wrong and red clover can actually improve fertility rates. And a significant part of livestock feed is made of plant-based protein and while feed costs are rising sharply for farmers, a Welsh government funded scheme has been getting more farmers to grow their own cattle-feed ingredients - and that means growing pulses in their fields. Ferrante made his feature writing and directing debut with the cult ghost story BOO starring Dee Wallace followed by the creepy horror films HEADLESS HORSEMAN and HANSEL & GRETEL. In 2013, Ferrante directed the quirky shark disaster film SHARKNADO. It instantly became a pop cultural and social media phenomenon when it made its debut on Syfy. This was followed by SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE which became the highest rated Syfy original movie of all time and SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO! which broke social media records by grabbing over 2 billion twitter impressions the night it aired. Airing July 31 is the fourth installment of the SHARKNADO franchise SHARKNADO: THE FOURTH AWAKENS. Ferrante has also written or co-written numerous horror films including HOUSE OF BONES, SCREAM OF THE BANSHEE and RED CLOVER and recently had his first short story THE CRIMSON MARQUEE published in the horror collection HELL COMES TO HOLLYWOOD II. He also wrote ARCHIE VS. SHARKNADO, the comic book companion to SHARKNADO 3 pitting the fiendish fish against characters from the beloved ARCHIE comic book series.
