Can you recall last year when the pools were shut during our 3 lockdowns? I think the pools were closed for approximately 30 weeks from mid-March 2020 to mid-April 2021. If you were like me, you looked for alternatives. I settled for some bungee cords with hand paddles attached. Others opted for the more exotic homemade paddling pools with a tether. The lucky ones were able to use an existing swim bench or even managed to purchase one. The most well-known of these is the VASA Trainer ergometer which was invented by today's guest, Rob Sleamaker, over 30 years ago. If you haven't seen one then just think indoor trainer for swimming. As you can imagine, during the lockdowns of the past 18 months, demand for these products went through the roof. I wanted to find out more about how and why Rob invented the VASA Trainer, and how we as triathletes might benefit from a different approach to swim training. Rob has a wealth of knowledge and an easy way of getting his ideas across. Listen closely and you'll pick up a few tips to improve your swimming as we chat about: How a VASA Trainer can improve your front crawl stroke and your swim performance If you use a VASA Trainer you can swim less and still improve Overcoming the mono-speed pull Why consistent swim training builds confidence Prioritising swim efficiency over getting faster The kayak analogy - why drag slows you down and how to minimise drag in your stroke Rob's 3 keys reasons why you will benefit from using a VASA Trainer If you would like to follow Rob or find out more about the VASA Trainer please visit these places: To follow Rob, Facebook To Follow VASA Trainer Instagram - @vasatrainer Youtube Facebook LinkedIn If you would like to find out more about VASA Trainer, please visit their website HERE Rob mentioned his recently published book, Triathlon Freestyle Simplified. Episode eight of "An Open Water Swimmer's Podcast" . . . today's guest is one of the most decorated swimmers of all time having set 233 FINA World Records at Masters Level (33 of which still stand). She was inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame in 2017 and is the author of "The Do Over": her autobiography telling the story of her struggles with addiction while at the same time being a swimming prodigy and Olympic hopeful. Her recovery and subsequent swimming accolades are riveting to read or listen to - both in and out of the pool. She is also a motivational speaker and swimming coach, teaching her 'Faster Freestyle' clinics around the world every year. It made for a compelling and brilliant chat, and I was fortunate enough to have some of her time form her home in Hawaii... Enjoy!
Today's guest is International Swimming World Hall of Fame Swimmer Karlyn Pipes - who has an amazing story to tell - from Junior Olympic Champion at age 15; to dealing with many years of alcohol addiction and then gaining sobriety; to then becoming the most decorated Masters Swimmer of all time - with 233 FINA World Masters Records to her name and counting! She's an author, a swim coach, a "Faster Freestyle Swim Clinic" inventor and leads "Aloha Swim Trek's" in the ocean waters around her home on Hawaii's Big Island. Karlyn has an inspiring story to share, that all swimmers, be they Masters or younger, can learn from. We chat about her early career in US Swimming in the 70's, her journey through alcohol addiction and then sobriety, her marvellous Masters career and many successes and accolades. Water is her life and she surrounds herself in it, but as Karlyn points out, her love affair with swimming has had many ebbs and flows, and it is heart warming to hear the relationship she has with the water now. No matter what life throws at her!You can connect with Karlyn on her website, for all Faster Freestyle and Aloha Swim Camps, and her book the "Do-Over" at:karlynpipes.comOn facebook at:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=804877093Through instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/karlynpipes/Karlyn's book is available through Amazon on Kindle or in hard copyIf you, or someone you know is suffering from addiction, please reach out to your local Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
In this episode, we're joined by one of the greatest Masters swimmers of all-time, Karlyn Pipes. Karlyn discusses her journey in the sport of swimming, which included early success, being an Olympic hopeful, swimming at the University of Arkansas, then dropping out. She discusses her addiction to alcohol, which eventually led her to rehabilitation. After alcohol rehabilitation, she was offered a full athletic scholarship to attend California State University Bakersfield (CSUB), at the age of 35! This was her "Do-Over", as she wrote about in her book (available here). We also discuss current events, the current status of female coaches in college swimming, and open water training for pool swimmers.
Episode 5 Karlyn Pipes: Pure Heaven Today's podcast is from our "lost file". Suzanne sat down with Karlyn Pipes before the 2014 Ironman World Championships. The two of them discussed the Island's natural & spiritual history, the waters around Kona, and swimming. Karlyn dives into many of her swimming techniques, her attitude towards training & racing, and discusses several different strategies that triathletes can use to start making changes to their swim style and exploring things that may work for them. Listen in as two coaches discuss their favorite sport with each other. You're guaranteed to come away a better swimmer! This year that dream became a reality and I offered one in January and one in February. We had mostly women, many of them in recovery interestingly enough, and we had an amazing time." - Karlyn BooksThe Do Over Sponsor This Episode About this Episode In 2014, I was on the island and spotted an amazing swim coach giving mini-lessons out of the demonstration Endless Pool on the main drag, across from the pier. It was none other than Karlyn! Eager to get into the pool and learn from her, I quickly changed into my suit and waited for my turn. After a great lesson where she both confirmed what I was doing well and gave me some new things to experiment with, I dried off, introduced myself formally, and asked her for an interview. She obliged, we snuck off to a grassy nook by the hotel and not only had a wonderful interview, but we also struck off an enjoyable friendship. At the age of 53, Karlyn was to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) joining all-time swimming greats such as Janet Evans, Mark Spitz, and Johnny Weissmuller to name a few. Competition is stiff to be considered, let alone inducted, and since its inception back in 1965 only 14 "Masters" swimmers have been honored. While an amazing accomplishment in itself, what is even more amazing is the circuitous, near-death journey she took to get there. Along the way, Karlyn has overcome addiction, set over 300 Masters World Records, over 200 FINA World records, coached thousands of athletes, traveled the globe teaching swimming, and made her home in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Karlyn shows off her excellent high elbow catch and forearm press all while talking to the fishies.
Kona is not just the home of the Ironman World Championships, it’s also where today’s guest, Karlyn Pipes, lives. If you haven’t heard of her, Karlyn is a world record holding Masters swimmer, a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and an exceptional swim coach. When Karlyn invited me to visit her home for a 30-minute swim tutorial and to record this podcast, it was an offer I could not refuse. Prior to starting the podcast, she asked me to swim in her Endless Pool, and proceeded to dismantle what I thought was my reasonable swim stroke (see the show notes below for links to some videos of this session). It’s always been my belief as a coach that triathletes who are preparing to swim in open water should have their OWS goals uppermost in their mind and in their training when they practice in the pool. If you want to swim faster in open water next season, then this podcast and the below videos are a must. Please listen carefully as Karlyn and I chat about: Her 3 basic principles for faster freestyle Why you can learn a lot from watching surfers paddle How open water swim technique is very different from pool technique Once again, another world class coach emphasizes the importance of mobility Her top tips for your winter training, which are not what you might think To learn more about Karlyn, please visit her website at KarlynPipes.com You can find her book, "The Do Over: My Journey from the Depths of Addiction to World Champion Swimmer”, here on Amazon.
