Throughout his 17-year career as the Head Diving Coach for RIT, he has coached eight All-Americans and every season, has a host of divers in the mix for All-American honors. He is also the CEO of The Professional Diving Coaches Association. In 2018, Cliff was awarded the Richard E. Steadman Award by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. He became the first diving coach to win the award, which is given annually to a swimming or diving coach in high school, club, or at the university level who, in the opinion of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Inc. the CSCAA Forum, and the CSCAA, has done the most to spread happiness in the sport of swimming and diving. In addition to his numerous awards and national championships, Cliff has also been featured on ESPN, USA Today, and as a TEDx speaker with his segment, “Breathe Fire.” Soon, he will be releasing a book. Jodie Henry is a 3x Olympic Champion. She won the 100 Free at the 2004 Athens Olympics and was part of both of Australia's winning relays (4x100 Free and Medley). She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2015. She learned how to swim at a young age and just progressed from there. It got serious at Chandler Swimming Club. Eventually moved to be coached with Shannon Rollason and his brother, Nathan. In 2000, at just 16 years old, missed making the Sydney Olympic team by just .02. Instead, got to enjoy a home Olympics, learn and watch. Jodie suggests so much of her swimming memories are all melted together. Being a very anxious person and being able to shut it down behind the blocks. Shannon gave her a specific plan to wave and smile. 2003 World Championships in Barcelona. Breaking the 100 Free World Record in Semi Finals at the 2004 Athens Olympics . She went 53.52. Shannon calms her down, gets her mind right to prepare to go out and race and win. She really pulled away from the field over the last 25 meters. Training back end speed. Jodie Henry's Favorite Swim Set: 4x 8x50's @ :35 holding :30 or under 1x200 recovery She did this set all the time by herself! The Relays. Her relationship with Alice Mills (now Tait) and Libby Lenton (now Trickett). At one point in time the 3 fastest girls in the world in the 100 Free were all in Brisbane. Training like a sprinter. In the 1960s, Sandra Bucha filed a lawsuit against the Illinois High School Association, seeking to be allowed to compete on the boys swim team because no girls teams existed in the state at the time.The young athlete lost her suit, but went on to success as a marathon swimmer and eventual induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Bucha’s fight in the courtroom helped pave the way for passage of Title IX in federal law and equal opportunities for female athletes. Today, she is one of more than 300 female athletes who signed a letter to the National College Athletic Association asking it to defend the rights of women to compete on a level playing field.The veteran swimmer joins “Problematic Women” to share her story and explain why the transgender movement threatens to undo everything she and so many others fought for.We also talk with Christine Rousselle, a reporter for EWTN and the Catholic News Agency, about why some states have allowed often-violent protests, but not funerals and church services. Brent also became the CEO of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, (ISHOF), in 2017. While he has an impressive list of accomplishments, his greatest work comes in his personal life as a husband and father. Brent and his wife, Ellen, have 3 children. His oldest and youngest both have significant handicaps while their middle child is healthy and gifted to be successful in whatever she chooses. Early on Brent had many questions as to why this happened to his sons. He questioned God and himself many times as he tried to figure out how to be the parent and husband he needed to be. Brent shares his lessons and insights on how he and Ellen have been blessed by their children and how he is a better man because of what their children have brought to their lives. Today Brett interviews 2020 International Swimming Hall of Fame Inductee, Michael Klim. They discuss how a chubby kid from Poland got to Australia. How he was "tapped on the shoulder" by Gennadi Touretski and became training partners with Alexander Popov. Being ranked #1 in the 200 Freestyle going into the 1996 Olympics and failing to make the Finals. Peeing his pants on the blocks in Prelims of the 200 Free. Doing 150 "starts" in 1 calendar year trying to break 50 seconds every time. Deliberate practice. The story behind Klim becoming a pioneer by swimming freestyle with straight arms -- through trying things in training. In this case, through different sprint drills. Sprint Drills: Dolphin Kick Freestyle. Dolphin Kick Freestyle with Head Up. Straight Arm Freestyle. Straight Arm Freestyle with Head Up. How they trained by progressing through the day...Morning would be aerobic. Middle of the day would be your threshold set. And your 3rd practice at 7PM is all explosive sprints and power. They put in 90K/100K weeks. One of Klim's Greatest Rivals: Geoff Huegill Leading up to the 2000 Sydney Games, they had a training camp that was open to the public that saw a couple thousand people walk in and observe practice every day. Brett explains leaving college swimming at Auburn early to focus on the 2000 Sydney Games, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Beating the undefeated Americans in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay in 2000. They go very in deep about this. Ian Thorpe ripped 2 or 3 suits and thus wasn't in the ready room. Klim led off that relay with a World Record time of 48.18. And much, much more! We had mostly women, many of them in recovery interestingly enough, and we had an amazing time." - Karlyn BooksThe Do Over Sponsor This Episode About this Episode   In 2014, I was on the island and spotted an amazing swim coach giving mini-lessons out of the demonstration Endless Pool on the main drag, across from the pier.  It was none other than Karlyn!  Eager to get into the pool and learn from her, I quickly changed into my suit and waited for my turn.  After a great lesson where she both confirmed what I was doing well and gave me some new things to experiment with, I dried off, introduced myself formally, and asked her for an interview.     She obliged, we snuck off to a grassy nook by the hotel and not only had a wonderful interview, but we also struck off an enjoyable friendship.  At the age of 53, Karlyn was to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) joining all-time swimming greats such as Janet Evans, Mark Spitz, and Johnny Weissmuller to name a few. Competition is stiff to be considered, let alone inducted, and since its inception back in 1965 only 14 "Masters" swimmers have been honored. While an amazing accomplishment in itself, what is even more amazing is the circuitous, near-death journey she took to get there.  Along the way, Karlyn has overcome addiction, set over 300 Masters World Records, over 200 FINA World records, coached thousands of athletes, traveled the globe teaching swimming, and made her home in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Karlyn shows off her excellent high elbow catch and forearm press all while talking to the fishies.

Kona is not just the home of the Ironman World Championships, it’s also where today’s guest, Karlyn Pipes, lives.  If you haven’t heard of her, Karlyn is a world record holding Masters swimmer, a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and an exceptional swim coach.  When Karlyn invited me to visit her home for a 30-minute swim tutorial and to record this podcast, it was an offer I could not refuse.  Prior to starting the podcast, she asked me to swim in her Endless Pool, and proceeded to dismantle what I thought was my reasonable swim stroke (see the show notes below for links to some videos of this session).  It’s always been my belief as a coach that triathletes who are preparing to swim in open water should have their OWS goals uppermost in their mind and in their training when they practice in the pool. Californian Laura Val is a Masters Swimmer who has clocked up some 360 world records, which is more than any other Master Swimmer. In one race meet when she turned 60 in 2011, she broke six World Records; the 50m,100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m and became the first woman ever to do so. In 1984 she joined a Masters Swimming Team and went to her first nationals in 1987 where she broke five national records. In 2016 Laura broke the World Record in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyles on her way to the World Record in the 1500m at a meet at the San Francisco Olympic Club. Laura has been inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame. She has also graced the cover of numerous magazines including Swimming World Magazine, Swimmer Magazine and SWIM Magazine. “I started as a kid at a local team. When I was about 10 years old, my mom got my four sisters and me into swimming. I instantly fell in love with it and was pretty successful from the start. Rowdy Gaines is a three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer, a U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame member and member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Rowdy won individual Olympic gold in the 100 meter freestyle and anchored both the 400 meter freestyle relay and 400 medley relay to Gold medals. After retiring, Gaines turned to broadcasting and is known as ‘the voice of swimming.’ He has worked with CBS, TNT and ESPN as a regular announcer for swimming and other events, and called his sixth Olympic telecast for NBC at the 2012 Games in London. He will again be part of the NBC broadcast team in 2016 for the Rio Olympic Games. Rowdy is currently an Ambassador for the USA Swimming Foundation and travels all over the country sharing the foundation’s mission of Saving Lives and Building Champions - in the pool and in life. Rowdy resides in Lake Mary, Florida with his wife, Judy and their four daughters.

"Aposentadoria é como a morte. Você sabe que ela chegará mas nunca está preparado" O nadador Gustavo Borges é um dos mais importantes atletas olímpicos brasileiros de todos os tempos. Nascido em Ribeirão Preto (SP), cresceu na cidade de Ituverava (SP), onde começou a nadar quando tinha 10 anos. Aos 18 ganhou reconhecimento internacional com uma impecável participação nos Jogos Pan-Americanos de 1991, disputados em Havana, Cuba. No ano seguinte faturou sua primeira medalha olímpica, uma heroica prata  conquistada nos 100 metros livres. No total foram quatro medalhas olímpicas, dezenove medalhas em Pan-Americanos e diversos recordes sul-americanos e quatro mundiais. Aposentado das competições desde 2004, após as Olimpíadas de Atenas, atualmente ele divide seu tempo entre as suas academias, as palestras e a divulgação do método que desenvolveu para o ensino da natação. Nesta semana o Trip FM recebe o maior medalhista nacional em provas de natação em Olimpíadas e Pan-Americanos, Gustavo Borges, que em maio deste ano entrou para o International Swimming Hall of Fame. Ao lado da lendária Maria Lenk, hoje ele se tornou o segundo brasileiro a integrar o Hall da Fama da natação mundial. Gustavo falou sobre Olimpíadas 2012, sobre a vitoriosa carreira, a vida fora das piscinas e o processo de separação entre ele e o esporte que o tornou famoso.   "Aposentadoria é um pouco como a morte. Você sabe que ela vai chegar mas quando chega você nunca está preparado"   "Eu sempre tive uma relação muito boa com a água e terminei minha carreira de uma forma muito bem resolvida. A natação hoje não é nem minha principal atividade física. Eu faço musculação, corrida, jogo tênis, então sou muito ativo ainda. Mas o nadar por prazer pra mim hoje é um pequeno problema. Você começa a ver como demora o processo de chegar, trocar de roupa, cair na água e etc... [risos] Hoje preciso me programar pra fazer isso. O importante é se manter sempre ativo." "O momento de se aposentar é uma perda muito grande para o atleta. Você nem pensa em parar quando está no auge e a questão do esporte é muito importante para você. E essa aposentadoria é um pouco como a morte. Você sabe que ela vai chegar mas quando chega você nunca está preparado", continuou. Com o atleta, a aposentadoria é como você chegar para a sua namorada e dizer: 'olha, eu te amo, mas em quatro anos a gente vai ter que se separar'. E um dia antes desse dia, você ainda tem muito amor pelo esporte e mesmo assim tem que se separar. É um sofrimento."   "Com toda a exposição que eu tinha, acabava ficando mais bonito"   Sempre muito bem humorado, Gustavo ainda falou sobre o assédio da mulherada nos tempos áureos de campeão olímpico, dizendo que nem só de treinamento pesado e dedicação vive uma lenda das piscinas mundiais. "Eu não era nem o maior pegador nem o maior carola do esporte [risos]. Eu era intermediário. O Xuxa (apelido do também nadador Gustavo Scherer) aprontava bem mais que eu, mas hoje ele sossegou. Quando você é jovem você tem toda aquela vontade e aquele desejo, não importa se você é atleta ou não. O quanto você apronta é que muda. Claro que com toda a exposição que eu tinha acabava ficando mais bonito [mais risos]. Esse era até um fator motivacional pra mim. [gargalhadas]."
