My guest today is Stefan Scorchev, a bridge player, friend, and the creator of IntoBridge. For those who are unaware, IntoBridge is a free platform for online bridge games. In his childhood, Stefan learned the value of online bridge as he spent hours playing bridge every day, and found that playing bridge online encouraged him compete at in-person tournaments. Stefan is the first Bulgarian guest I've had on the show, and I fist met him in 2012 when he played on the Bulgarian team in the Junior Nationals. We talk about in-person and virtual bridge, the unique features of IntoBridge that borrow from modern gaming, and what it's like to run a bridge startup. You can learn more about IntoBridge on its website: https://intobridge.com/  Subscribers to The Setting Trick email list check your email or to subscribe click here: https://www.thesettingtrick.com/  Episode Highlights: 4:58 – Stefan played bridge online constantly in his childhood, and moved into in-person tournaments at seventeen. He says he played bridge as much as fifteen hours a day. 12:05 – Stefan says he is the strangest looking person at tournaments because he always wears his IntoBridge merchandise. 16:05 – “We focused on inventing something that has the potential that you close it immediately and continue whenever you can.” 17:35 0:54 – Ranked matchups on IntoBridge 24:17 – The Daily exists to give people a reason to return to IntoBridge every day. 28:47 – Stefan has a lot of ideas for new bridge formats unique to IntoBridge 32:45 – Some unfortunate mis-clicks 40:12 – Bridge marketing is difficult, so word of mouth has been the best marketing channel for IntoBridge 48:22 – Running a startup is difficult as investors and employees rely on the performance of the business 56:46 – Having access to a free bridge platform as a kid was game-changing for Stefan. 57:59 – One great aspect of online bridge is that it naturally leads people into in-person bridge, encouraging them to meet more people. 1:02:41 – Stefan's Fiance, Desi, is coming to the US Nationals for the first time.

Send us a textIn our latest Hootworthy interview, we caught up with Luke, a 10th grader at GCA, who's making waves in the gymnastics world. Luke is not just any gymnast; he competes in Trampoline, Double-Mini, and Tumbling at the Junior Elite level. With only three other athletes in the U.S. achieving this level across all three events, Luke's accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary. You can check out Luke's bio here. One of Luke's standout achievements is being crowned the 2023 Tumbling National Champion at the USA Gymnastics Championships. He also earned a spot on the 2024 U.S. Junior National Tumbling Team, and he's currently ranked 4th in the world in Tumbling for his age group—an impressive feat he secured at the World Age Group Championships in Birmingham, UK. Despite his rigorous training schedule, which includes three-hour daily practices and intense speed programs, Luke manages to balance his academics thanks to the flexibility GCA offers. He often squeezes in schoolwork during lunch breaks and appreciates how understanding his teachers are about his schedule.Luke's journey into gymnastics began when his mom signed him up for a parkour class to help him manage his OCD. A gym coach spotted his potential, and the rest is history. Even with a few stumbles—like the time he fractured his ankle at the gym—Luke has remained committed to mastering gymnastics. Making the national team was his most memorable moment, but he admits to often tripping right after nailing a solid routine.Looking ahead, Luke has his sights set on competing in the Olympics for Trampoline and the World Games for Tumbling. He advises aspiring gymnasts to expect to fall a lot, but don't be too hard on yourself. Learn from the falls, get back up, and keep going. With his achievements and the support from GCA, Luke's story is a testament to what commitment and tenacity can achieve. Stay Hootworthy, Luke!

Four storytellers share their true personal stories on the theme “The Kindness of Strangers”. Their stories were recorded live in person in front of a sold-out crowd on December 06, 2023, at The Wilma in Missoula, MT. Steve Rosbarsky journeys alone to the Junior Nationals tournament in Minneapolis. The absence of parental guidance sets the stage for a misadventure leading to trouble at a hotel. Stranded without a coach, an unexpected savior, Martin Martin, rescues the young athlete from a precarious situation. A series of escapades involving hotel ice baths, wheelchair races, and rooftop pool revelry culminate in a disciplinary showdown with the coaches. Steve calls his story “Three Days, Two Coaches, One Martin Martin“. Steve Rosbarsky was born and raised in Missoula Montana. He has two beautiful children, Lydia and Eddie. He is so grateful to his partner Gwen and the joy that he feels being the long-term parental type figure to Evani and Cecelia. Steve is also proud of his beautiful granddaughter Ronnie. He owns and operates a Taekwondo School here in Missoula. Steve is a sustainable project coordinator for Missoula Habitat for Humanity. He holds gratitude for all the moments this life has provided. Learn more about Steve at Missoula Taekwondo Center. Maria Merkley’s traumatic encounter, guided by her sexual assault victim’s advocate’s support, led to resilience and empowered her to begin her healing journey. Maria calls her story “The Advocate”. Her long-term goal is to move abroad to live and teach anywhere there is a mild winter! In 2020, Mandy faced heart surgery complications, feeling alone in a hospital amid COVID restrictions. Mandy tries to put on a brave face for her family and friends and her emotions and feelings build inside her to a fever pitch. A gruff nurse, Keith, changed everything with empathy, teaching her to accept help and cherish human connection. Mandy calls her story “Open Heart”. Three Things I Learned In SaaS, Sports, Tech and Live Events Spent last week at my son's Junior National Volleyball tournament in Orlando (3rd place!). What I learned about business (and life) from 5 days in Florida capped off by a surprise medal: 1. A loss can be a win more often than we think - part six. In 2011, we thought we'd hooked a whale. FedEx was doing an rfp to replace their internally built ticket management system, which was actually a pretty good system, as the owners were retiring. We drove the RFP, had a number of meetings, and the big pitch felt like a formality. It wasn't. We lost. It was crushing. The biggest opportunity to date and we lost it to a competitor. I remember the drink at the bar after like it was yesterday. On day 2 of Junior Nationals, our son's team got upset. A few really tough calls made what should have been a blow out a too-close game and the boys lost. The path to a medal would go through the #1 team in the country. We stayed in touch with FedEx. Just over a year later, a phone call came. The vendor had dropped the ball. They wanted to make a switch. We've been proud to be their vendor ever since. Turns out, the #1 team in the country was a good match-up for our boys in the quarterfinals. They won. If they hadn't lost those two close heartbreakers on day 2 and day 3, they would have drawn the eventual winner instead. The scene from "Charlie Wilson's War" continues to amaze me, in life and business. 2. Matthew 7 and I'm asking. Prior to the match-up with the top team, I was talking to a friend who is a Pastor. I told him "It's Matthew 7, and I'm asking." I have a hard time praying for wins. We're so blessed in so much I feel guilty and often sell GOD short. What he said to me blew my mind: "Ask. Let's be honest, HE already knows!" In 2016, right after we raised our B round, we were given a mandate: hire a COO. We searched for awhile and didn't have any luck. Finally, we found one. The perfect person. But, we couldn't afford him. We weren't having any luck in talent, so I called a dear friend I knew from Church who was a hitter in talent at Workday for advice- did he know anyone who we could call. "I'll call you back in five minutes" was the response. He called and asked me why I didn't ask him? I didn't think he'd leave his big time gig to join our shop. So I asked. He joined us. Then he called the COO and asked him. And he joined us too. Ask. It's okay. 3. Everybody happy makes nobody happy. In the world of youth sports everyone wants their shine. Business is no different and it's a lesson I learned the hard way. At the big tourneys, the coaches select the All-Tournament players. To adults, All-Tournament awards in 13u sports aren't a big deal. But they are to the kids. One coach wanted to spread the love around by giving all tournament to kids who hadn't won it before. Seems like a great idea. Jim Halpert had the same idea when trying to blend birthdays in “The Office.” I've tried it too at work with just about everything: food, awards, social events. Try to make everyone happy. And why not? Shouldn't we all be happy for one another? Doesn't work that way. I've learned to give the accolades to those who are earning them. Otherwise I've just created a mess of sore feelings and resentment. In talking to one of his star players parents after the tournament, that player was furious and "wouldn't come back next year." It was reinforced what I've learned too many times: Be fair. Be transparent. And be as just as I can be. Otherwise, nobody is happy.

This is the second episode in a special series on gender identity policies in rowing. We're getting to know some of the people behind initiatives challenging the notion of fairness and inclusion in our sport. Since December 2022, World Athletics, World Rowing, USRowing and other national governing bodies, have announced updated gender identity policies. The Biden administration is proposing changes to Title IX. In response, voices across the rowing community have stood up for "fairness for women" and alternatively "inclusion for marginalized athletes." We're taking a closer look. Ann Strayer, OLY, was a self-described "natural" in a single in high school. She quickly earned a seat on the 1978 Junior National Team, and went on to row at Princeton 1978 to 1982. While at university she made her first National Team in 1981, followed by five more teams in the 1980s, culminating in a spot on the 1988 Olympic squad. Today, Strayer is the Varsity Women's Coach at Oakland United Rowing in Oakland, CA. In response to the ICONS petition seeking to define "eligibility for the women's/girl's categories to participants born female," Strayer and fellow OUR coach and Olympian Erin Cafaro have written a letter in support of USRowing's gender identity policy. They, along with 50+ Olympians and coaches who have signed the letter, strongly believe that the most important thing for scholastic transgender and non-binary athletes is to welcome them into boathouses, and allow them to row as the gender with which they identify. . QUICK LOOK 00:00 - Rachel and Tara talk gender identity policies, the ICONS petition fighting for fairness for females, and the letter that Strayer and Erin Cafaro have written in support of gender inclusive policies. 08:15 - Team Huddle: Coach Strayer's bio in 45 seconds  09:10 - Rapid Fire Q&A 12:40 - Growing up in Cape Cod, MA: sailboats, softball, and basketball.
