Writing is a gift. It shares what you know, or, even better, what you've just made up but sounds really convincing because – you're a good writer. It's a form of communication that can either draw you in to stay up late, or put you to sleep. And let's face it – social media would not have taken off the way it did if not for clever quips to convey thoughts in 280 characters or less, or with just the right pictures, because of writing. And we tell you this not just to praise people who write great stuff for us but because our next guest on the BrandBuilders Podcast is an accomplished author who has 3 novels and about a billion book reviews to her credit. Okay maybe we exaggerated that part – but before she published her first novel, she also went to medical school and became a doctor and also the mother of 3 children, and volunteers with a number of nonprofit boards. So we're REALLY glad Kimmery Martin took some time out of her busy schedule to talk to US!

Normally, we don't repeat the same guests multiple times on the show (because there are so many great guests to feature), but we decided to ask Kimmery Martin back on the show for this episode. Kimmery is a trained ER physician who is now a full time author and her niche is medical fiction about female doctors. She is the author of 3 books: The Queen of Hearts, The Antidote For Everything, and her newest, Doctors and Friends. When she spoke with us last time in Season 2, she hinted at the manuscript she was working on about a female doctor during a global pandemic and the horrible decision she has to make about her children. That manuscript became Doctors and Friends. We asked Kimmery on because we're still knee-deep in COVID, and we had to know what it was like to write a novel about a pandemic just as an actual pandemic was moving around the globe. Plus, Kimmery contracted COVID which added another interesting layer to her work as a writer. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- The Queen of Hearts by Kimmery Martin 2- The Antidote For Everything by Kimmery Martin 3- Doctors & Friends by Kimmery Martin 4- Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel 5- Melville in Love by Michael Shelden 6- Moby Dick by Herman Melville 7- Tybee by Herman Melville 8- Until the End of Time by Brian Greene 9- My Year Abroad by Chang-rae Lee 10- Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil DeGrass-Tyson 11- The Mist by Ragnar Jonasson 12- The Lost Man by Jane Harper Shows mentioned-- 1- Reservation Dogs (2021 on Hulu) 2- Reservoir Dogs (1992) 3- Station Eleven (2021, HBO)

Bess Kercher weaves an Adventure-Filled Middle Grade Tale in “Now and At the Hour” In today’s episode, we visit with Bess Kercher, author of “Now and At the Hour,” a compelling middle grade novel which follows 12–year-old Albert Davidson through a challenging year in his life. With faith, compassion, love, adventure, and friendship, Albert tries to accept his mother’s cancer diagnosis, all while learning to let go of the secrets and lies he tells to protect her. After saving a baby shark from the surf, a video of the event goes viral and Albert uses his newfound popularity to help his mother find a path to healing. A quieter adventure unfolds with the boys and a mysterious stranger, whose unsafe circumstances lead Albert to double down on his secrets and lies. Kimmery Martin, author of “The Queen of Hearts” and “The Antidote for Everything” has this to say about the book “Bess Kercher's debut novel brilliantly captures the singular world of a middle-school kid. Albert Davidson is an endearing, compelling hero, forced to navigate his mother's distressing diagnosis and his own newfound celebrity at the most awkward and uncertain of ages. ‘Now and At the Hour’ is the best kid lit I've read in a long, long time.” Engage with the show here: https://linktr.ee/CharlotteReadersPodcast Detailed show notes here: https://charlottereaderspodcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/charlottereaderspodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlottereaderspodcast/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/charlottereader Charlotte Readers Podcast is a proud member of the Authors on the Air Global Radio Network and the Queen City Podcast Network. © Charlotte Readers Podcast and Authors on the Air Global Radio Network

Episode Eighty Five - Kimmery Martin The Antidote for Everything with Kimmery Martin: Author (and Doctor) Kimmery Martin talks to us about her newest novel in which two doctors come into conflict with their hospital board when they are told they may no longer treat transgender patients.
Thanks for joining us as we venture into the world of books and reading...
“Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also the love of humanity”. This quote from Hippocrates, the father of medicine, is especially true when doctors imbue their experiences into artistic pursuits like today's guest. Kimmery Martin is an emergency room physician turned author whose medical fiction features female doctors shouldering the life and death responsibilities of their profession but also dealing with questions of friendship, love, and the thorny cultural Issues of our times with a good dose of humor thrown into the mix. Her first novel Queen of Hearts, published in 2018, was praised by the New York Times and cited as a most anticipated book by Southern Living and Writers Digest. Her newest book, The Antidote for Everything, explores the friendship between a female specialist and her best friend, a male family physician who also happens to be gay. Her book explores what happens when her best friend is told by the administration of the hospital that he can no longer provide care for LGBTQ patients or risk being fired. Kimmery talks to us about her childhood growing up in Eastern Kentucky, the humorous way she chose the profession for her main character, what the storyline of her next book will look like, and why physicians have a unique perspective for writing fiction. Books and Authors Discussed in this Episode: 1- Any book by Bill Bryson 2- Queen of Hearts by Kimmery Martin 3- The Antidote for Everything by Kimmery Martin 4- Any book by Chris Bohjalian 5- Booked by Kwame Alexander 6- Emma by Jane Austen 7- The Innocents by Micheal Crummey You can find us on FB, instagram (@perksofbeingabookloverpod) and on our blog site at www.perksofbeingabooklover.com Perks airs on Forward Radio 106.5 FM and forwardradio.org every Wednesday at 6 pm, Thursdays at 6 am and 12 pm.
