Tháng 8, năm 2014, tạp chí Harper's đăng bài viết của Jessica Bruder – “The End of Retirement – When you can't afford to stop working” (Kết thúc của nghỉ hưu – Khi ta không thể ngừng lao động). Sau đó, sách thắng giải The Banes & Noble Discover Great New Writers và giải thưởng quốc tế Ryszards Kapuściński. In seiner Entscheidung Dobbs v. Given the recent leaked draft of a Supreme Court decision which could overturn Roe v. Wade, we do a special episode with a focus on abortion access, law and lived experience. Farai starts with best-selling author of Nomadland, investigative journalist Jessica Bruder. Her Atlantic Magazine cover story, “The Abortion Underground” details the covert network that is preparing for the possible end of legal abortion on the national level. Farai invites Jessica to answer questions provided by OBP listeners as well as share additional insight she has on what preparing for a post-Roe future could look like. Then, Farai speaks with Madison Jacobs, communications strategist at the Public Rights Project about the state-level abortion fight in Michigan and elsewhere. In the weekly segment, Sippin' the Political Tea, Farai speaks with law professor and OBP legal contributor Tiffany Jeffers and reproductive rights expert and UC Irvine law professor Michele Goodwin, who begins with the lived experience and learnings from her own abortion.
The Senate is expected to vote on an abortion protections bill next week after a draft opinion suggested the Supreme Court would overturn Roe v Wade. It comes as the White House weighs its next steps to protect abortion rights, although options are reportedly limited. Plus, Chief Justice John Roberts speaks publicly about the leak for the first time. Nicholas Wu, Barbara McQuade, Carlos Curbelo, Rep. Adam Smith, Jessica Bruder, Dr. Kavita Patel and Damian Paletta join.
After the bombshell leak of the Supreme Court's majority decision to overturn Roe v. Wade this week, WrapWomen has released a special bonus episode of the “UnWrapped” podcast with guest host Sharon Waxman, founder of TheWrap and WrapWomen. The episode features interviews with: Jessica Bruder who recently penned The Atlantic's May cover story, "The Abortion Underground." She is also the author of "Nomadland," which was made into the Oscar-winning film of the same name. Audrey Diwan, director of "Happening." The film, which premiered at Sundance, centers on a young woman's desire to end her pregnancy in 1960s France. Paxton Smith, the recipient of WrapWomen's 2021 Voice of the Future Award, is a 19-year-old abortion activist who came into the spotlight after her moving high school commencement speech. This week, Alan, Quinta and Scott were joined by Jeffrey Kosseff, cybersecurity law professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, to hash through some of the week's big national security news, including: “One Letter Off KGB, Two Letters Away from DGAF.” The Department of Homeland Security has taken heat this week for creating an internal Disinformation Governance Board, which partisan critics have railed against as a federal “Ministry of Truth” responsible for policing speech. What's the real story behind this group? And does it warrant all this fervor?“One Bad Mother Tucker.” A newly published New York Times report documents how Tucker Carlson's Fox News show makes unprecedented use of racist rhetoric and partisan fear-mongering. What new did we learn? And what broader impact should we expect this report to have?“Chutes and Escalation Ladders.” While Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a habit of invoking his country's nuclear arsenal in response to Western reactions to his invasion of Ukraine, he so far hasn't made any signs toward actually using it. But is this about to change? And how should the United States and its allies respond? For object lessons, Alan endorsed his neighbor's ghost pepper-laced apple brandy, which all listeners should take as an invitation to crash at his place in Minnesota. In light of the pending repeal of Roe v. Wade, Quinta recommended that listeners read Jessica Bruder's “The Future of Abortion in a Post-Roe America." On a similar logic, Scott encouraged listeners to look back to John Hart Ely's 1973 critique of Roe "The Wages of Crying Wolf" for a vision of the pre-Roe legal landscape to which we may be returning. And Jeff recommended one of his favorite musical artists Patty Griffin and her forthcoming album, giving her some of the publicity that she won't pursue herself.Be sure to visit our show page at www.lawfareblog.com and to follow us on Twitter at @RatlSecurity. Abortions won't stop if Roe is overturned, but the future of abortion access would certainly look different than it does today. On Today's Show:Jessica Bruder, Brooklyn-based journalist and author of Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century (W. W. Norton & Company, 2017), talks about her reporting for The Atlantic on the underground network of activists who have been preparing for the potential that the Supreme Court might overturn Roe v. Wade and the right to legal abortion.
An unprecedented leak of a draft U.S. Supreme Court decision suggested plans to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that enshrined abortion rights across the country in 1973. If Roe v. Wade is reversed, abortion could be banned in as many as 26 states, some starting almost immediately. Today on Front Burner, we talk to journalist and Nomadland author Jessica Bruder about the networks of underground abortion providers and what comes next for people seeking help.
For a new piece in The Atlantic, that was also the center of the latest episode of the podcast The Experiment, reporter Jessica Bruder takes a look at how abortion activists nationwide are preparing for a world in which Roe v. Wade is overturned. The work being done by this underground network includes online forums to raise awareness about pharmaceutically induced abortions. Bruder also draws parallels between the work done by activists in the pre-Roe era to provide safe abortions to people in need. The Takeaway speaks with her about what this work means as the country awaits a Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

The Supreme Court will soon announce a decision that could substantially weaken or even overturn Roe v. Wade. Jessica Bruder recently wrote for the Atlantic about the many groups of activists helping women get access to abortion, even if they have to work around the law. Bruder spoke with Apple News In Conversation host Duarte Geraldino about how this network first formed and the ways activists are laying the groundwork for a country without Roe.
There's a common story about abortion in this country, that people have only two options to intentionally end a pregnancy: the clinic or the coat hanger. They can choose the safe route that's protected by Roe v. Wade—a doctor in a legal clinic—or, if Roe is overturned, endure a dangerous back-alley abortion, symbolized by the coat hanger. But a close look at the history of abortion in this country shows that there's much more to this story. As the Supreme Court prepares to hear a case that could overturn Roe v Wade in June, activists are once again preparing to take abortion into their own hands. Reporter Jessica Bruder explores the abortion underground to learn about the movement's origins, and reveals how activists today are mobilizing around effective and medically safe abortion methods that can be done at home. “A post-Roe world will not resemble a pre-Roe world,” writes Jessica Bruder in her recent Atlantic piece on how underground networks of abortion activists are deploying medical and educational tactics to prepare for what they say will be the Supreme Court's all but certain decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. A number of states have already approved highly restrictive abortion laws, including most recently Oklahoma, which last week moved to ban all abortions except to save the life of the mother. Meanwhile, Gov. Newsom has declared California a “reproductive freedom state,” and advocates have created the California Future of Abortion Council to protect and expand access to reproductive health care. We'll hear from Bruder and activists about how they're preparing for a post-Roe world and the role California will play.
Activists are mobilizing in preparation for the weakening or end of Roe v. Wade. That's the subject of Jessica Bruder's new cover story for The Atlantic. "There are lots of people who want to keep abortion accessible for everybody who might want access to abortion, regardless of what the Supreme Court does," she says. Bruder is also author of the book Nomadland, which was adapted into an Oscar-winning film. Also, Maureen Corrigan reviews Sea of Tranquility the new novel by Emily St. John Mandel.

A conversation with Nomadland author Jessica Bruder from February 2020.
When capitalism chews us up and spits us out, where do we go? How do we carry on? And can we find ways of living that honor the dignity of our humanity when the world we live in so often does not? In this week's episode of “The Marc Steiner Show,” Marc and Inequality.org Founder and Director Chuck Collins explore the important message and soulful artistry of Jessica Bruder's book "Nomadland," and its new film adaptation, starring Frances McDormand.
