Why is the Skrmetti Supreme Court case important?

This week marked a decisive victory in protecting minors from harmful gender transition procedures. The Supreme Court justices ruled 6-3 in favor of the Tennessee law banning healthcare providers from prescribing medication or performing procedures on minors to “transition” to an identity opposite of their biological sex. The protection of minors from harmful “gender transition” surgeries and interventions is good and appropriate. Furthermore, states have a constitutional responsibility to protect children from harm. Because of this, the ERLC advocated against such procedures, and filed an amicus brief alongside the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board in favor of the Tennessee lawmakers and the protection of children. Before the ruling was released, we talked about the importance of this case with Matt Sharp, who serves as senior counsel and director of the Center for Public Policy at Alliance Defending Freedom. Sharp earned his J.D. in 2006 from the Vanderbilt University School of Law. Since joining ADF in 2010, Sharp has authored federal and state legislation, regularly provides testimony and legal analysis on how proposed legislation will impact constitutional freedoms, and advises governors, legislators, and state and national policy organizations on the importance of laws and policies that protect First Amendment rights.

New Genetic Mutation Linked to Drug Resistance in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patient

BUFFALO, NY - February 6, 2025 – A new #casereport was #published in Volume 16 of Oncotarget on February 5, 2025, titled “Acquired RUFY1-RET rearrangement as a mechanism of resistance to lorlatinib in a patient with CD74-ROS1 rearranged non-small cell lung cancer: A case report." In this case report, Jenny L. Wu from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Wade T. Iams from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center describe a rare case of drug resistance in a patient with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The patient, a 42-year-old man who had never smoked, initially responded well to lorlatinib, a targeted therapy designed to treat cancer driven by specific genetic alterations. However, after six months, his cancer began to grow again. Clinicians discovered that this was due to a new genetic change, known as the RUFY1-RET fusion. This finding highlights how cancers can adapt to treatment and the importance of ongoing genetic testing to guide therapy decisions. NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer, and in some cases, it is driven by genetic changes that can be targeted with specific drugs. The patient's cancer originally had a ROS1 gene rearrangement, which made it responsive to lorlatinib. But as time went on, the cancer started to grow again, and tests revealed a new genetic alteration called RUFY1-RET fusion, which likely caused resistance to lorlatinib. This new genetic change was identified using RNA next-generation sequencing (RNA NGS), an advanced test that can find mutations that standard genetic tests might miss. After discovering the RUFY1-RET gene fusion, the patient was treated with a combination of lorlatinib and pralsetinib, a drug that specifically targets RET gene alterations. While this combination helped control the cancer for about four months, the patient's condition unfortunately worsened after four months. “This is the first reported case of a RET fusion as a potential mechanism of resistance to lorlatinib, it identifies a novel RET fusion partner, and it emphasizes the importance of testing for acquired resistance mutations with both DNA and RNA at the time of progression in patients with targetable oncogenic drivers.” Understanding cases like this can help clinicians and researchers develop more effective treatment strategies, including combination therapies that target multiple genetic changes to combat drug resistance. While the combined therapy in this case provided only temporary benefits, it offers important insights for future research and patient care, particularly for cancers that no longer respond to standard treatments. I'm so excited that Dr. Kevin Osteen is joining me this week for the Egg Whisperer Show. He is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College.   Since the 1990s, Dr. Osteen's research program has focused on environmental endocrine disruptors and how they impact endometriosis. His laboratory developed “organ-on-a-chip” technology, which is a tiny plastic “chip” about the size of a USB thumb drive that mimics the workings of the microenvironment of a human organ. Dr. Osteen's team created the first endometrium and endometriosis chip models. These “organ-on-a-chip” models provide a way to test and observe what happens in “normal” endometrium, and in those that have endometriosis. This technology changes the way doctors study this disease.   Dr. Osteen and I are talking about the organ-on-a-chip technology, endometriosis, and endocrine disruptors, and reproductive health. The use of simulation in nursing education has been growing in recent years not only because of its proven effectiveness as a training method, but because of limits on clinical training placements, and a dearth of nursing faculty. Today on Raise the Line, we're happy to welcome one of the pioneers in this area, Dr. Pamela Jeffries, the Dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing which is consistently ranked among the top graduate nursing schools in the US. “Now that we've moved to competency-based education and outcomes, I feel simulation is one of the mechanisms that's going to help faculty to see our students demonstrate those competencies needed across domains,” Jeffries tells host Maria Pfrommer, director of Nursing Education at Osmosis from Elsevier. Dr. Jeffries is also known for her work improving the online learning landscape in nursing education. “Online learning is so important in nursing because if you look at our students, they're typically working part-time or even full-time and need that flexibility.” Maria and Dr. Jeffries also get into the details of Vanderbilt's graduate nursing programs and discuss the game changing potential of AI in nursing education and practice in this informative episode.Mentioned in this episode:Vanderbilt University School of Nursing

As Christians, we know that God's design for raising children is in the context of a home with a loving father and mother—and he gave parents the responsibility to raise their children in accordance with His Word. This may seem obvious, but our society is increasingly pushing back against God's design by undermining “parental rights.” While in a fallen world parents don't always seek what is best for their children and should be held accountable by God-given authorities, in most cases, moms and dads should be able raise their children according to their deeply held beliefs, ensuring their children are protected from things like the harmful effects of radical ideas about gender and sexuality. So, why and how are parental rights being brought up at the Supreme Court this term in a case titled United States v. Skrmetti? On today's episode, you'll hear from two lawyers—Matt Sharp and Kayla Toney—who are well acquainted with these legal challenges and how they are related to radical gender ideology. Wondering how Pfizer and partner BioNTech developed a COVID-19 vaccine in record time without compromising safety? Dr Bill Gruber, SVP of Pfizer Vaccine Clinical Research and Development, explains the process from start to finish. “I told my team, at first we were inspired by hope and now we're inspired by reality,” Dr Gruber said. “If you bring critical science together, talented team members together, government, academia, industry, public health officials—you can achieve what was previously the unachievable.” The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine has not been approved or licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but has been authorized for emergency use by FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to prevent COVID-19 for use in individuals 12 years of age and older. BILL GRUBER: Historically, vaccines have been one of the most important medical intervention for public health. Diseases like smallpox that used to have a 30% mortality rate, that are completely wiped from the face of the Earth. When it looked like there was the potential for us to engage in moving forward a COVID-19 vaccine, there was the daunting challenge to do something that had never been done before. And that was to try to get a vaccine out within less than a year. That, I can tell you, is unprecedented in history. My name is Bill Gruber. I head vaccine clinical research and development for Pfizer and I've been involved in vaccine development for over 35 years. Dr.  Haase's approach centers on therapeutic plasma exchange, a process aimed at removing harmful proteins and molecules from the blood, which are associated with deteriorating brain function. Haase received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and did his residency at the Mayo Clinic. Today he is based in Nashville, Tennessee, at his Maxwell Clinic. Dr. Haase has spent over two decades working towards improving brain health and functionality through integrative and innovative treatments. Dr. Haase discusses the efficacy of therapeutic plasma exchange in reversing dementia and cognitive decline, citing the AMBAR study, which showed significant improvements in Alzheimer's patients. This treatment, according to Dr. Haase, is a breakthrough yet remains underutilized due to a lack of awareness and financial backing. The procedure involves replacing a patient's plasma with a clean albumin solution, which can lead to improvements in cognitive functions and a reduction in neurodegeneration markers. Dr. Haase emphasizes the importance of addressing cognitive health proactively, leveraging multifactorial treatments to tackle the complex causation of cognitive decline. ***** David Haase, MD is a Vanderbilt, Mayo Clinic, double board certified , VERY CURIOUS physician.  In 2003 Dr. Haase founded the MaxWell Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee as a living laboratory to explore the question "What Creates Health?" and he has been incessantly innovating in the fields of nutrition, genomics, mitochondrial function, systems biology, apheresis, stem-cell programming, and brain optimization ever since.  His patients are those who desire the deepest personalization of innovative performance and longevity care possible.  He is the author of Curiosity Heals The Human: Solving the ‘Unsolvable' with BetterQuestions and Advanced Technologies. ***** Cutting Edge Health podcast website: https://cuttingedgehealth.com/ Cutting Edge Health Social and YouTube: YouTube channel: youtube.com/@cuttingedgehealthpodcast Instagram - https://instagram.com/cuttingedgehealthpodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Cutting-Edge-Health-Podcast-with-Jane-Rogers-101036902255756 Please note that the information provided in this show is not medical advice, nor should it be taken or applied as a replacement for medical advice. I'm excited to have him on the show, and hope you'll join us for this exciting and very timely conversation. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website Learn more about Dr. Osteen here. Environmental, social, and governance, or ESG, has been in the news a lot lately—particularly the “E” when it comes to new and evolving regulations. There's been a greater push in the United States for transparency and disclosure of data regarding businesses' environmental impact, driven largely by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau. In fact, California is expected to soon be the first US state to require company reporting related to environmental impact. So, what does this all mean for companies that are working to become more sustainable? How do you even begin to report on emissions and environmental impact? In this episode of LRN's Principled Podcast host Eric Morehead explores how transparency plays a crucial role in corporate sustainability with Andrea Peters, the senior counsel of Interface.  For a full transcript of this podcast, visit the episode page at LRN.com.  Guest: Andrea Peters Andrea Peters is senior counsel for Interface, Inc., a global commercial flooring company (NASDAQ: TILE).  In her role, she provides legal support for the company's global operations, including Research & Development, Sales, Marketing, Procurement, Tax and Human Resources, and she also manages Interface's global compliance program. Andrea has over 26 years of legal experience, over two-thirds of which comes from working in-house at companies such as Interface, CAN Capital, The Weather Channel, the General Electric Company and GAMBRO Healthcare.    Andrea earned her J.D. from the Vanderbilt University School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Advertising from the Pennsylvania State University, where she was the student marshall (valedictorian) for the College of Communications.  Andrea resides in Atlanta with her 10-year-old daughter.  She has gone sky diving twice, bungee jumping once, and ziplining once. She enjoys cooking, wine and travel. When she retires, Andrea plans to go back to college to audit all of the hard but interesting classes without worrying about writing papers or taking exams.  Host: Eric Morehead Eric Morehead is a member of LRN's Advisory Services team and has over 20 years of experience working with organizations seeking to address compliance issues and build effective compliance and ethics programs. Eric conducts program assessments and examines specific compliance risks, he drafts compliance policies and codes of conduct, works with organizations to build and improve their compliance processes and tools, and provides live training for Boards of Directors, executives, managers, and employees.
