Editors - Andrew Buckland ACE and Scott Morris A COMPLETE UNKNOWN editors Andrew Buckland, ACE and Scott Morris came into James Mangold's latest film being almost completely unknown to one another.  Aside from mutual acquaintances, the two had never worked together or even met prior to this film.  In spite of this, their combined talents tackled a big film that featured forty live performances and an aggressive post schedule. Co-written and directed by James Mangold, A COMPLETE UNKNOWN takes place in the early 1960s, when 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music.  Forming his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement, making a controversial choice that reverberates worldwide. Our journey into the realm of hot, messy women embroiled in murder mysteries continues with Tate Taylor's adaptation of Paula Hawkins' The Girl On The Train. Much like The Woman in the Window, the film stars an A-list actress (here it's Emily Blunt) doing great work in a lukewarm thriller.Plus: female archetypes, too complicated plotting, our desire for a miniseries, and comparisons to male-centric "prestige" pictures like OppenheimerWanna connect with the show?> Gena: @genadoesthings (Instagram/BlueSky)> Jenn: @jennferatu> Joe: @bstolemyremoteIf you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe! Sam Mendes didn't want to make another James Bond film after completing 2015's Spectre. As we discover in this episode, he had another film lined up that he backed away form. He decided to gamble on 1917, a movie that he had a plan to shoot in a really rather unconventional way. When Gone Girl hit, meanwhile, Hollywood went looking for more books that it felt might be along the same lines. It didn't take long to find The Girl On The Train, and it took seemingly even less time to get a film of it moving. This week, we read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens Bekah joins me on this episode to discuss:  The dark past of author, Delia Owens, that may or may not influence the plot/characters of the book.  What order you should read the “Where the Crawdads Sing” trifecta including book, movie, and New Yorker article. How this book became a phenomenon among book clubs and Reese Witherspoon fans.  Open your book and press play on a podcast episode that will have you running barefoot into the marsh and talking with all the birds.   Mentioned in the Pairings section of the podcast: DRINK: Sweet Tea with Whiskey TV SHOW - Big Little Lies, Outer Banks, The Last Thing He Told Me BOOK - The Great Alone, To Kill a Mockingbird  MOVIE - Safe Haven, Gone Girl, Girl On The Train, The Woman In the Window   Important links mentioned in the podcast: “The Hunted” - The New Yorker  “Where the Crawdads Sing Author Wanted for Questioning in Murder” - The Atlantic “A Shooting in Zambia” - The New Yorker   Quick Summary: For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life—until the unthinkable happens.  ***  Once you're done listening, hop onto our Instagram and TikTok @rwreadspodcast to give us your thoughts on the discussion and the book. We look forward to hearing from you!    * Disclaimer * At Red Wine Reads, we want to engage in the stories of people from all kinds of backgrounds and experiences. The value of books lies in the power of storytelling and sharing a range of perspectives. We don't want to just read what we know, we want to read stories that open our worldview. And in turn, that means getting into challenging, rewarding conversations. But we are not experts in any field — literature, race relations, politics, etc .— and we know that our reviews of these books come from a place of privilege. We encourage our community of readers to add to these conversations with their own thoughts, critiques, and questions. We want to open up a safe place for people. That being said, we also realize that getting into race, sexuality, gender, and other difficult topics can be triggering. We aim to include content warnings whenever they are applicable but we are not perfect. So as we continue to do our best, know you have the room to tell us when we can do better and even, if you want to, share resources with us. Let's learn, grow, and have fun together.

These may be live or recorded· Narration – Not necessarily audiobooks, but TV, radio or movie documentaries, and news articles. It may also include the voice-over in a film or TV show to move the storyline along, explain a backstory or add depth to the character as you can hear their thoughts, for example, in “How I Met Your Mother” or “The Girl On The Train” (?)· Podcasts – scripted podcast (which is more like conversational narration), fiction (akin to audiobooks) and dramatization (‘voice acting' or ‘audio acting'). Also, voice tracking for radio stations (providing recorded links for music shows which are automatically played in between songs to give the impression it's a live show)· IVR (Interactive Voice Response systems), phone system recordings (‘telephone trees' and on-hold messages) – phone greetings for any size of company (“Welcome to … press 1 for accounts, 2 for sales…”)· Promos and trails – usually for TV (“The Heat Is On”: Friday night at 10 on channel 10”) and movies (such as the cliched “In a world…”) · Radio imaging - (“You're listening to 97.7 The Frog”)· Toys and Theme Park animatronics - · Virtual Assistants – on games and information apps on services such as Siri or Alexa Most voiceovers specialise in a niche before branching out, and of course, the goal of every voice actor is to become the vocal brand of a product, service or production for a higher rate, higher exposure and longevity of contract.Let's take a look at some of the voice skills required for some of these genres. My guest today is a woman who I'm pretty sure you've heard of, but you may not think you have. Her name is Paula Hawkins, but you probably know her as the author of the global bestseller The Girl On The Train. A book she wrote in her early 40s after - I'm sure she won't mind me saying - an awful lot of also-rans. The girl on the train went on to sell 23 million copies, be published in 50 countries and is one of the top 5 selling hardbacks since records began. It was also turned into a film starring Emily Blunt. But does that level of success - and let's face it, cash - bring with it massively liberating freedom… or the fear of never being able to live up to your own legend? Paula talks about the shock and salvation of sudden mid-life success when you're totally broke, the importance of being able to “leave if you need to”, the likability curse that plagues women, why she always knew she didn't want children and her hopes for her third novel, the taut, tense A Slow Fire Burning, which has some of the best older female characters I've read in a long time. You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins and the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by me!The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford.
