Whether you share them, prefer them or avoid them – pronouns are everywhere. As Laura Paterson, a linguist who specialises in pronouns, tells us, this is a. because they are an essential part of grammar and b. because they are particularly sexy right now. Laura tells us what exactly a pronoun is and why third-person personal pronouns can cause so much controversy, despite the fact that their main job is just to point to things.  References: Paterson, Laura L. Mild spoilers in this generous, enlightening, complicated conversation with bestselling author Chloe Benjamin! We begin by talking about expectations and surprising inspiration during a global pandemic and how Chloe tries to let go of the “shoulds” and lead with compassion.  ** The Immortalists is a wonderfully ambitious novel about four siblings who learn the date of their deaths from a fortune teller and how each wrestles with this information. It tackles BIG questions and Chloe shares why she loves these high concept premises with intimate character work. (07:44) ** The fortune teller’s prophecy affects each of the characters differently and Chloe shares how she managed to wrap up each character’s story while still providing ambiguity and complexity that leaves the reader guessing in the best possible way. (14:50) ** We talk about the complicated women of The Immortalists, Clara and Varya, and Chloe tells us about her inspiration for these women and the challenges presented in writing them. You don’t want to miss hearing about how she took inspiration from a story about an immortal jellyfish! (18:49) ** We love discussing the unlikely bedfellows of magic and faith and all the different ways we search for things as a way to grapple with our humanity. Chloe reminds us that none of us have all the answers, many of us need coping mechanisms, and what form that takes is different for everyone. (25:05) ** Chloe blows our mind again as we discuss the beauty and freedom in uncertainty, in learning to surrender, in being open to letting things unfold, and in allowing space for intuition.  (29:04) ** Chloe’s #CoronaCorrespondence post for The Sewanee Review has us talking about the magic that happens when we let go of our expectations, but how hard her journey has been along the way. (32:10) ** The writer’s journey for Chloe brought her and professor Kiese Laymon together in college and the effects were profound. (40:45) ** We ask Chloe to share her biggest piece of advice to aspiring writers on the issue of getting published and the answer involves experimenting, playing and reading. (45:55) ** Chloe’s social media shows that she doesn’t take herself too seriously and we love that she loves literary fiction, but also the Real Housewives. The most important thing is to be authentic. (49:22) ** Chloe shares what she's loving right now and it includes one of our favorites: Brit Marling! (57:14) ** We can’t leave without discussing astrology. Chloe is our first Scorpio, but her rising sign is a Leo so Kate is immediately smitten! The book follows these siblings in the years after their visit, and poses the question, "If you knew the date of your death, how would you live your life?". Come and feel things with us, bookworms. Read The Immortalists in time for our next main episode, out at the end of August.

Amanda and Jenn discuss action-packed sci-fi, NYC stories, mysteries, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Summer Constellations by Alisha Sevigny and The Theory of Happily Ever After by Kristin Billerbeck.   Questions   1. Hey Amanda and Jenn! I'm looking for a good book for my boyfriend. He's never really enjoyed reading but is trying to change that, particularly because his sister and I just gush over books every time we're around each other and I think he wants in on the fun. He's mentioned that he might be interested in something like Stephen King, but the size of the books are too intimidating. I think he would particularly enjoy mysteries or thrillers, but any genre is welcome. The most important thing is that the books are not too long and they are easy to get through -- so no complicated structures or long lists of characters. Thanks for all you do, --Morgan   2. Hi guys! Tracy here. First, love your show and I’m so excited to get some book recs from you! I’m traveling to Greece with my mom who is newly divorced (after 40 years) from my dad. She is working on being independent and finding herself. I’m looking for books about mother, daughter relationships, independent women and any stories about Greece in general that might help me appreciate the country when we’re there in July. I’m not into religion, YA or love stories. Bonus for strong women main characters. TBR includes Have Mother, Will Travel. Thanks much!! --Tracey   3. Hi! I'm just about to finish grad school, and will be starting an internship in NYC in September (on my 30th birthday!). I would love to spend the summer reading books set in NYC to give me a feel for the city and some history and to help me make a list of things to do and see there. I'd prefer fiction but am fine with non-fiction. I just finished the Golem and the Jinni and loved it (can't remember any other books I've read set in NYC...sorry not helpful). Thanks so much! --Elyse   4. A friend recommended “A Secret History” by Donna Tartt and it changed my life. What other books can I read about an outsider joining a friend group that has deep secrets (secrets that might involve the occult or murder), secrets that ultimately make or break the group and the narrator? I also enjoyed “Bittersweet” by Miranda Beverly-Whittamore and “The Anatomy of Dreams” by Chloe Benjamin. --Lauren W   5. Hi guys, I love your show and it's introduced me to so many authors and books!! (Some favorites that you've mentioned are Bird Box, Hex, and Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge, so many thanks for bringing me book joy!) Last year, I read "After Her" by Joyce Maynard and LOVED IT. I was haunted by the story of two sisters who lure a serial killer in the hopes of helping their dad, town detective or sheriff (idk), who is slowly unraveling under the strain of solving the case. The beautiful portrayal of the sisters' relationship, the super interesting serial killer facet, and the vivid Northern California setting helped make this book one of my favorites of last year. I'm looking for a read-alike. The closest I've gotten is "Descent" by Tim Johnston, which was good, but I need more! So a literary novel with some sort of murder mystery but also a strong bond between siblings is what I desire. Extra points for vivid setting. (I've already read Attica Locke, by the way, and she is everything). Thank you! --Camille D   6. Hi! I'm starting a ~think deeper~ book club and I need a book to recommend for our early March read. I have a little bit of a weird request, perhaps... We just saw the play Hand to God (amazing puppet play set in a church...) and I am looking for a book about the creepier side of evangelist Christian communities and churches. Several of us were raised Christian and in the Deep South, and respect people's rights to believe what they want. BUT. As ex-Christians we're fascinated with evangelical Christians who engage in the more ~magical~ and performative acts (being possessed by the holy spirit, speaking in tongues, camping in tent cities) etc. I also recently saw the documentary Jesus Camp and it fueled my interest even more. I would really like to read more about these kinds of communities, double points for creepiness and/or magical realism/fantasy. (Christian-based cults are also very much interesting to me.) --W   7. I would like to get more into science fiction. I've read the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi and loved it. I tried reading a Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and couldn't finish it. If you have any fast-paced, action-packed science fic recommendations I would really appreciate it! Thanks. --Jodie   Books Discussed Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot (trigger warning: child abuse, suicidal ideation, self-harm, domestic violence) A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant 100 Places in Greece Every Woman Should Go by Amanda Summer Traveling with Pomegranates by Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay by Michael Chabon Saint Mazie by Jami Attenberg (plus Up in the Old Hotel by Joseph Mitchell) If We Were Villains by ML Rio Books Like The Secret History post Long Black Veil by Jennifer Finney Boylan Dead Letters by Caite Dolan-Leach The Secret History of Las Vegas by Chris Abani The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (trigger warning: domestic violence) Infomocracy by Malka Older Bone Street Rumba series by Daniel José Older (Half-Resurrection Blues #1)

A new theatrical adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein at The Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre aims to be one of the most faithful versions to the original novel. What does this add to our understanding of the play and of the Creature? This year's Palme d'Or winning film The Square, is a Swedish satirical drama dealing with the world of contemporary art and our personal boundaries and responsibilities. Chloe Benjamin's latest novel 'The Immortalists' follows the lives of a group of contemporary New York Jewish American siblings and poses the question "how would you live your life if you knew the day you would die'? Two exhibitions have opened this week in London of the work of Tacita Dean (former YBA), known primarily for her work in film Annihilation is a new release on Netflix, written and directed by Alex Garland. With five female leads, its scheduled theatrical release has been dropped, but can we read into that decision: that it's no good? Tom Sutcliffe is joined by Susannah Clapp, Ryan Gilbey and Alex Clark. The producer is Oliver Jones.

Chloe Benjamin is equally adept at creating myths and busting them. The Immortalists has enjoyed a tremendous amount of buzz, listed as one of the most anticipated books of 2018 on more than one list. This is the kind of buzz usually reserved for debut novels or novels from household name authors. Chloe is, instead, a second-time author following a first novel that sold well, but on a more modest scale. In the publishing industry, like any other industry, there are many myths, and not just the ones that live inside of books. One of them is that you can't expect to sell a second book if your first wasn't a blockbuster. Chloe broke this myth herself with The Immortalists. We discuss this myth in this episode, along with many other things: our shared love of bathrobes and a debate about the advantages of executive assistant jobs while writing books. Chloe is living proof that things don't always proceed the way "they" say they will. She's written a gorgeous book that deserves every bit of attention it is getting and I hope you leave this episode just as inspired as I was after our conversation. Host Cyd Oppenheimer talks with author Chloe Benjamin about unreliable narrators ("To me, every narrator is unreliable"), about allowing herself to write characters whose lived experience differs from her own ("research and empathy are the best way I've found to give myself that permission"), and choosing to end not with death but with healing; guest readers Annie Thoms and Jessica Sager join Oppenheimer to discuss the journeys of oppressed peoples, the stories that we tell ourselves, and what it means to believe in transformation.
