Carol Ann Dougherty was the older daughter of a “wonderful family”, a happy nine-year-old, who loved to read and frequently rode her bike to her town's library, usually stopping at St. Mark's Catholic Church to pray on her way home. On October 22, 1962, Carol Ann was found dead in the church's loft, having been sexually assaulted and strangled. What monster could have committed such a heinous act to a sweet child, in the most holy of places?

At the time this podcast was recorded on Thursday January 30th, Jamie Mott had ridden 71 Victorian winners for the current season, with only Blake Shinn ahead of him on the premiership ladder. A few hours later he booted home two winners at the Pakenham twilight meeting taking him to 73. On Friday evening he was at the Moonee Valley night meeting where after three early placings he won the final race on Excess for great supporter Julius Sandhu. His seven rides at Sandown on Saturday yielded a win on Russian Meteor and one placegetter. Winner tally was now 75. Jamie talks about his current run of success for a wide range of stables. He talks about the never ending task of keeping his weight where it needs to be. The in- form jockey speaks glowingly of My Gladiola and Royal Insignia, two young horses who could provide him with stakes success over the autumn carnival. He also reflects on the Blue Diamond that slipped through his fingers in 2022. Jamie pays tribute to Royal Insignia's dam Yau Chin who had to be euthanised the day before his Manfred Stakes win. The jockey talks of his family background and agrees he was destined to be a jockey. Jamie talks of his early apprenticeship to his late grandmother Janet and a transfer to the Flemington stables of Leon Corstens. He's still embarrassed about his very first race ride at Cranbourne on a Corstens trained mare.  Jamie hasn't forgotten about his first win on a horse trained by his grandmother. He led all the way. He looks back on a short stint with Danny O'Brien during which time he received a suspension. He was stunned when his weight suddenly soared to 62kgs. Disillusioned, he quit his apprenticeship and returned home to Geelong. When the bug bit again, Jamie based himself at Cranbourne and began riding work for a wide range of trainers. His weight came down and he was able to return to race riding. He talks about another setback in 2009 when he failed a jockey's room drug test. Outed for six months he made up his mind to keep his weight in check. Jamie looks back on the freak winning run he enjoyed on the comeback trail- something like 24 winners in the first month. Lady luck hadn't quite finished with young Mott. He went through a trifecta of trauma all in the space of a week- a race fall, a trackwork fall and an unexpected assault at a Melbourne nightclub. Doctors sidelined him for many months. Jamie's life took a turn for the better when he returned to trackwork next time around. He was a massive 71kgs when he linked up with the late Russell Cameron at Flemington- a man destined to become his mentor, his best mate and his salvation. The jockey endorses the sentiments of Victorian participants who were deeply saddened  by Russell Cameron's premature passing. Jamie talks of his good fortune in meeting his future wife at the Cameron stables. Carol Ann was a member of the team and it wasn't long before she and Jamie became partners. He looks back on the fairytale wedding he and Carol Ann were able to enjoy in a 13th century Irish village. He talks of the wonderful family life he and Carol Ann share with their sons Henry (7) and Charlie (4). Jamie looks back on his brief but successful stint as a jumps jockey. He had the time of his life.  The 178cm jockey talks of the bizarre fall in 2019 which left him with two broken legs. He was off the scene for six long months. Jamie was hungry for winners when he returned to the saddle and he didn't have to wait long. At his very first ride back he stormed home on Rock the Ring to win a maiden at Sale, and the winners continued to flow. Jamie's maiden Gr 1 win was on Callsign Mav in the Rupert Clarke Stakes for Danny O'Brien. He says he was worried on the turn. The jockey talks about his second win at the elite level. A lucky late ride paved the way for a thrilling win in the Champion's Sprint at Flemington on expat Kiwi mare Roch ‘N' Horse who made a habit of upsetting high profile opposition. This is a laid back interview with a gifted horseman who's been able to overcome all sorts of adversity to join the ranks of Melbourne's top tier jockeys.

A birdwatching getaway in the Peak District that should have been uneventful was the inspiration for this episode, with my wife and I accidentally choosing to stay just a few hundred yards from the scene of a notorious set of murders, which we learned about by chance. It seems that true crime follows me everywhere… (my wife still doesn't believe that I really didn't know when we booked it!)The lives of an escaped criminal and an unsuspecting family converge in a dramatic and bloody home invasion set against the cold, bleak, back-drop of Beeley Moor in 1977, a period which would become known as the ‘Year of the Knife'. This episode covers the Pottery Cottage murders and culminates in an explosive finale, while the next instalment will explore the Gunn Hill killings, which took place just a month later.************************************************************************************** Thanks for listening! January 28, 1981. Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The decomposed body of a young woman is discovered in the woods next to a remote logging road. The victim has been stabbed nine times, but since she cannot be identified, she becomes known as “Bossier Doe”. 34 years later, Bossier Doe is finally identified as 17-year old Carol Ann Cole, a Michigan resident who had run away from Texas a few months before she was killed. Suspicion turns towards John Chesson, the man who reported the discovery of Carol Ann's body to the police, as his daughter was certain that Carol Ann had stayed at their family's residence prior to her death and Chesson would go to prison for murdering another person several years later. Did John Chesson kill Carol Ann Cole or was someone else responsible? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore another tragic story about a Jane Doe who remained unidentified for three decades, but her murder is still unsolved. HALO Talks

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2023 28:13

Joining us on this episode of HALO Talks are a cast of veteran actors and incredibly talented individuals who have combined their love for performing, writing, and a newfound passion for pickleball to create something truly special: Pickleball is Life-Dill With It! Watch the hilarious trailer here!  Today's guests include Carol Ann Demarco, Susan Gallagher, Catherine Curtin, and Leigh Anne West.  When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Carol Ann and Leigh Anne found themselves brainstorming ideas for a comedy project. Drawing from their experiences in New York Theatre and indie short films, they came up with the concept of a mockumentary that serves as a bit of a "love letter" to Cape May, the quirky and eccentric characters they encountered in the world of pickleball, and the sport itself. Despite initial resistance as a former tennis player, Leigh Anne embraced the project wholeheartedly. She and Carol met every Friday to develop the characters and scenarios, created a pilot, and with the addition of powerhouses Catherine and Susan to the team, their project began to really take off.  The pilot, however, is not just about the sport itself. It also serves as a platform to showcase talented actresses, and challenges stereotypes of 'older' women. What started as a personal diary of sorts soon transformed into this hilarious pilot that anyone who has ever picked up a pickleball racquet could relate to in some way.  The group also discusses the public's hunger for content and the growing popularity of pickleball as a sport, making this the perfect opportunity to bring "Pickleball Is Life" to the masses. They also touch on the current writer's strike (still happening as of August 2023) which opens doors for production and shooting, highlighting the advantage of having content ready to go once the strike ends. "We have content that [the networks] can have now . . . instead of 'you need to make your content,' which will take 6 months. We have content that you could have right now and it's really funny, and it is the most popular thing going in the world right now," states Curtin.  Some key moments:  [00:01:23] Pickleball enthusiasts combine passion for acting. [00:04:58] New York theater duo creates pickleball mockumentary. [00:11:57] Agent received email. Offer to play pickleball. Excited to work with familiar faces. Grateful for opportunity and fun experience. [00:17:07] Proof of concept TV pilot seeks fan base and investors for full season. [00:18:45] Age of actors not the issue, public's interest is. Pickleball trend creates content opportunity. Writer's strike will create demand for content. [00:24:15] Mental health and community through fitness. A few key takeaways:  Pickleball has gained tremendous popularity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a sense of community and connection for players of all ages. The TV pilot "Pickleball is Life: Dill With It!" was created as a love letter to Cape May and the pickleball community, showcasing talented actresses Leigh Anne West, Carol Anne Demarco, Susan Gallagher, and Catherine Curtin. The project evolved from brainstorming a comedy about experiences in New York Theatre and indie short film into a mockumentary-style TV pilot, inspired by movies like "Best in Show." The group emphasizes the importance of creating content on the subject of pickleball, as there is public hunger for it and the popularity of the sport provides an opportunity for unique storytelling. Pickleball is seen as a democratic and inclusive sport, bringing people together regardless of skill level and providing an outlet for fun and teamwork. Live from the floor of the March 2023 IHRSA Trade Show in San Diego, host Pete Moore welcomes Carol Ann Chambers, Director of Workforce Innovation & Community Partnerships, Adjunct Professor at Lionel University.  Carol Ann has dedicated the past 15 years of her life to the HALO (Health, Active Lifestyle, Outdoor) space. Although she started as a volunteer coach without any certifications, her passion for fitness and health led her to establish her own nonprofit organization focused on kids' fitness. Working with new and young athletes, Carol realized her true calling was to be a positive and supportive influence in their lives, just as her high school cross country and track and field coaches had been for her. Inspired by her coaches, Carol aspired to become a coach herself, with a specific focus on young athletes. She aimed to make a difference in the lives of these individuals, paying forward the same mentorship and guidance she had received. Regarding the Importance of in-person mentorship she states, "You can teach all of that in a classroom, but you cannot replace that human interaction, and especially in this industry. You need to show people by doing you need to be with them, and you need to have that connection in person." Carol Ann's organization, Lionel University, partners with fitness organizations to provide tailored educational pathways for staff at all levels. They focus on innovation and creating programs that meet the unique needs and desires of their students. With a team of experienced educators and accreditation experts, they ensure the content meets educational standards while handling the accreditation process. [00:13:26] Working with big names, becoming national academic partners, creating tailored programs for businesses. [00:17:25] Accredited institution providing customizable curriculum and credit. A few key takeaways:  Carol is the leader of a division at Lionel University that focuses on reaching students from underresourced communities in San Diego. Through a partnership with the San Diego Housing Commission's Leadership Academy, they have created a scholarship-based workforce program that trains students to become certified personal or fitness trainers, aiming to break the cycle of homelessness and promote overall health and fitness. Education is a key component of Carol's work. They believe in the importance of continued education for coaches to improve retention and save businesses money. Their organization, Lionel University, offers education for fitness professionals, from certificate level to Master's of Science in exercise science. They are also partnering with fitness organizations to bring their initiatives to communities across the nation. Carol emphasizes the ripple effect that a great coach and mentor can have on individuals and communities. They believe that starting with one athlete or person and building them up can lead to a positive impact on their immediate family, friends, community, gym, and beyond. Lionel offers customized educational pathways for businesses and brands, tailoring programs for different models of operation. Their courses provide college credits that can be applied towards associate's or bachelor's degrees, and they handle the accreditation process, making it easier for clients to focus on their own needs. Episode 112 Carol Ann FarinoOn the evening of November 3, 1966, 17-year-old Carol Ann Farino, a pretty, popular high school student left work at Milt's Cup & Saucer in Maplewood, New Jersey, a small town just 10 miles west of New York City and began her regular walk home. She never made it. Her dead body was found just a half-mile away, strangled with her own stocking and with signs of attempted sexual assault. Oddly, her purse and shoes were missing. For more than 50 years local police have been unsuccessful in their investigation, following hundreds of leads, interviewing dozens of friends and family and trying to determine who did this brutal crime and why. But another victim of the killing is Carol's younger sister, Cynthia. Only 11 years old at the time, she has carried emotional scars, uncertainty, and pain from the ordeal for decades. In this episode, Cynthia discusses her sister's tragic death, and the aftermath.
