Leaders in biblical higher education hear many different theories and terms about leadership, so many that it can be difficult to decide what is the best way to pursue one's goals. Our guest today, Kirk Brothers, the president of Heritage Christian University, has a suggestion — define spiritual leadership. He discusses how the examples of leadership that Christ can bring us closer to this answer. By examining Christ's example, Kirk also shares insights into how one should lead for God — not themselves — how to set goals for a Christian educational institution, and how to view youth and family ministry. Join us as we discuss: [8:10] The relationship between youth and family ministry[14:12] The importance of defining leadership terms[21:49] What Christian higher education should strive forCheck out these resources we mentioned during the podcast:Lead Like the Lord: Lessons in Leadership from JesusIn Christ's Image: A Guide to Youth and Family MinistryMinistry Matters podcastTo hear this interview and many more like it, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website, or search for Biblical Higher Ed Talk in your favorite podcast player.Hosted by Ausha. It has a number of short pithy sayings on various topics like the book of Proverbs. It has a Jewish flavor: “12 tribes” (1.1), “the synagogue” (2.2) and “the law” (2.11), “Lord of Sabboath” - Hebrew title for God (5.4). It emphasizes an active faith shown by works (1.22-26). There is an emphasis on prayer and proper use of the tongue. Faith is especially shown in one's treatment of others. Purpose 1. To comfort and encourage them in trials and temptations (1.2ff). 2. To correct disorders in early Jewish Christian assemblies (2.1ff, favoritism) 3. To deal with the tendency to divorce “faith and   works” (2.14ff). Key verse: James 2:26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. NAS Outline The Testing of Faith (1:1-18). The Traits of Faith (1:19-5.6). The Triumph of Faith (5:7-20). (adapted from Nelson's Bible Dict.) “James is the kind of book you ought to read standing up. It contains a ringing call for action, a plea for vital Christianity and a faith that demonstrates itself not in mere words, but in lifestyle” (Maxwell, 1541). “James models a leadership weary of sterile mission statements framed on a wall. He cares nothing for the set of core values the subcommittee wrote down last year if they were only words on paper that got filed away” (Maxwell, 1541). “He is an activist who labels as ‘self-deceived' those who say they are committed to do something, but never do” (Maxwell, 1541). For James, Christianity and Leadership are Action Words Leadership Lessons in James - What does godly leadership in action look like? James 2:1 My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. 2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, 3 and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,” James 2:4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives?       5 Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?    6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court? 7 Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called? James 5:1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! 4 Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you. Picture of poor child and some coins. The Problems of Power – James 2, 5 Playing Favorites – James 2:1-13 Playing with People – James 5:1-11 Picture of a man floating above a beach Picture of a four women holding their hands in the shape of hearts Picture of a chess board Godly Leadership in action.... Lowers the leader & lifts the follower Illustration of the donkey dressed in the lion skin James 3:13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. Why? James 3:1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. James 3:8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; NAS James 3:10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. 11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?  12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. James 4:1 What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. James 4:11 Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor? April 22, 2023 - Equipped Workshop Day 3 7:15PM Keynote Auditorium Speaker    Kirk Brothers closes out day 3 off the Equipped Workshop.    Slides: Slide of current news stories Serving in a World of Selfishness - Philippians 2 Prison Break Writing from a prison in Rome to Philippi where he had also been in prison He was released from prison in Philippi He had converted a jailer in Philippi He was writing to tell them how to break out of prison without leaving the cell Theme: "Attitude Determines Altitude" (cf. Phil. 4:4) Ch. 1: Paul's Attitude Ch. 2: Christ's Attitude Ch. 3: Wrong Attitude Ch. 4: Attitude Adjustment Oneness of Mind Phillipians 2:1 - Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose, but also for the interests of others. Oneness of Mind Encouragement in Christ -> same mind Consolation of Love -> same love Fellowship of Spirit -> united in spirit Affection & Compassion -> one purpose Philippians 2:2-4 - 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, bu with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2-8 - 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be gasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Savior's Mind: Humiliation "Attitude" - "to think, form or hold an opinion, disposition" To be one we must be humble To be humble we need to learn to think like Jesus John 13:15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you." Philippians 2:5-6  5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be gasped, John 1:1-3 Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:3 John 17:5 Philippians 2:5-8 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. What did He give up? Divinity? Matthew 1:23 John 8:58 John 20:28 Gave up privilege power place Not position, divine person-hood Emptied self by becoming human Philippians 2:5-8 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Often interchangeable, but seem to be contrasted here: Morphe (form, v6-7) - Essential nature, that does not change Schema (appearance, v8) - Outward appearance that can change His internal essence and nature was/is divine.  His outward appearance changed & he became human.  Though divine, he became fully human and experienced life as a human being John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Acts 17:30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."  Heb 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Phil 2:7-8  7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. [3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;] Majestic Mountain View Picture of a Cross Picture of a paper saying "I want to be a garbage man" Phil 2:9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. NASU “Right Hand of God” (Mark 16:19) Change of Mind Phil 2:12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;  13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. “Work Out” – “Accomplish, Bring to completion” Jesus worked to save by humble obedience The Father is at work (energeo) in us Therefore, we need to “go to work” and put our faith into action by humble obedience What does working out your salvation look like? Phil 2:14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing; 15 so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world,  “Without grumbling or disputing” Blameless: “no cause or ground of complaint” Innocent: “unmixed” Above Reproach: “without blame, fault, ridicule or disgrace”  “among whom you appear as lights in the world”  The Savior's Mind Be him to be one, be one to be him Then we shine as lights in a dark world Photo of Captain Emil Kapaun Do I have the attitude of Christ? Have I emptied myself? Does my service add to the light or does my selfishness add to the dark? Duration 42:03

In 2013 Jason and Karen Kirk launched an eyewear line for individuals. A line that is boldly expressive and proudly inclusive, with shapes that break boundaries. Kirk & Kirk frames are authentic, inspirational, and confident, just like the people who wear them. Jason Kirk grew up in optics, his grandfather Sidney and his great uncle Percy founded Kirk Brothers in 1919 when they converted an old sewing machine into a lens cutter. Karen Kirk studied design in London and was working for Saatchi and Saatchi when she turned to optics.Motivated by a strong family legacy and a desire to bring something new to the eyewear market, Jason and Karen Kirk started Kirk & Kirk as a line to innovate and inspire. The line was immediately a success and their frames are now sold in 30 countries worldwide. They believe every collection they create should bring something new to the market. Their Kaleidoscope collection offers an array of colours and dimensions that cannot be imitated, and the Centena collection is the only 10mm thick acrylic eyewear frame construction in the world. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Co-Founder Jason Kirk about his family's rich history within the optics industry. Jason took an interest in eyewear once he came across an old box of glasses which his grandfather had once made. He then teamed up with Karen who had graphic design skills which complimented his optics knowledge to bring something new and exciting to the industry. Our host Peter Brooker and Jason also discuss innovative eyewear materials, why glasses are an extension of fashion, buying frames and lenses online, and why Robert Downey, Jr. is such a fan of the brand.Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily MenswearStyle newsletter here.
