What a Secret Service Interrogator Can Teach You About Building Trust in Sales

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount

Brad Beeler, author of Tell Me Everything and retired Secret Service agent who has conducted more criminal polygraphs than anyone in the agency’s history, was clearing a house on a search warrant when he came across two dogs: a pitbull and a Chihuahua. His focus locked on the pitbull. The stereotype. The threat. Meanwhile, the Chihuahua circled behind him and jumped up, latching onto him right between the legs while his partner stood there laughing. We assign horns and halos fast. Brad learned that lesson with dogs. You learn it every time a prospect shuts down before you finish your introduction. Horns mean danger. Hurtful. Someone here to take from me. Halo means safe. Helpful. On my side. Over 25 years of getting people to confess to federal crimes, Brad discovered something powerful: the same instincts that get hardened criminals to talk work in conference rooms. The techniques that break through with people who have every reason to lie also work on prospects who have every reason to brush you off. Because in both environments, trust determines everything. Why Building Trust With Prospects Is Harder Than You Think Your brain’s been running this horns-and-halos program for 300,000 years. When something rustled in the bushes, you made a split-second decision: climb a tree or fight. That quick judgment kept you alive. The moment you walk into a prospect meeting, their brain assigns you horns automatically. You are the salesperson. The interruption. The person asking for their budget. In their mind, you represent risk before you ever speak. It happens on cold calls. You say, “Hi, this is…” and they are already calculating how to end the conversation. On discovery calls. In demos. At conferences when you introduce yourself. Every single time. You are fighting ancient wiring every time you engage a buyer. So what can you control? The first 90 seconds. How to Build Trust in the First 90 Seconds We remember first impressions and last impressions. In most meetings, it begins and ends with a handshake. Brad puts antiperspirant on his right hand. He warms his hands before entering a room. He holds eye contact for one second. Faces the person straight on. Slows his pace. Lowers his tone. It sounds mechanical. But every one of these micro-decisions either confirms horns or begins to build a halo. Wet handshake? You’re nervous, unprepared, not confident in what you’re selling. Avoiding eye contact? You’re hiding something or you don’t believe in your own pitch. Talking too fast? You’re trying to get something past them before they catch on. When you control these variables, people’s guard comes down faster. You’re giving their brain evidence that maybe, just maybe, you’re not the threat they assumed you were. The Trust-Building Technique Most Salespeople Get Wrong Brad would sit across from murder suspects and open with one line: “I need you to help me understand.” Humans are hardwired to explain. When you position yourself as the learner, something shifts. They become the expert. Their guard drops. They start talking. Most salespeople walk in ready to educate. Your deck. Your case studies. Your demo. You’re there to prove you know their problems better than they do. Sometimes that works. But think about what it communicates: “I already know what’s wrong with your business. I just need you to agree with me and sign here.” Instead, try: “Walk me through what happens when your team processes a new order.” “Help me understand how you’re handling onboarding right now.” “What’s your biggest bottleneck?” Invert the dynamic. You’re not there to impress them. You’re there to learn from them. Once buyers start explaining their world, they reveal what matters. The workaround their team built. The spreadsheet that breaks every month. The process leadership thinks is automated but is completely manual. That’s the information that moves your deal forward. How to Build Rapport Before the Real Conversation Starts Before interrogating two suspects, Brad bought them food. Popeyes for one. McDonald’s for the other. Twenty-two dollars total. The next day, the woman’s on a jail call: “Yeah, they got me with the McDonald’s. That’s why I confessed.” It was not about the food. It was about comfort. Lowering the guard. Creating what Brad calls a confessional environment where people feel safe telling the truth. You’re probably not buying prospects lunch before your first call. But the principle still applies. Show up five minutes early so they don’t feel rushed. Ask about their weekend before diving into business. Acknowledge that you know their time is valuable. Turn your camera off if they seem uncomfortable on video. Send the agenda beforehand so there are no surprises. These are small friction eliminators. They signal: I’m not here to ambush you. I’m not trying to catch you off guard. We’re having a conversation, not a pitch. The prospect who feels safe tells you what’s really going on. The prospect who feels ambushed gives you the corporate line and ends the call early. What Happens When You Actually Build Trust With Buyers When buyers move you from horns to halo, everything changes. They stop filtering their answers. They tell you what keeps them up at night. They admit where the process breaks. They share internal pressure you would never see in a polished demo. I’ve watched this play out hundreds of times. The rep who asks better questions closes more deals than the rep with the better demo. The rep who makes prospects comfortable gets to real problems faster than the rep with the perfect pitch. Brad spent 25 years getting people to confess to federal crimes. He still warms up his hands before handshakes. Still slows his speech. Still positions himself as someone who needs to learn. Why? Because building trust isn’t about personality or natural charisma. It’s about technique. These methods work because they’re based on how humans actually operate, not how we wish they operated. And when buyers tell you the truth, you can actually help them. — Download our free Sales EQ Book Club Guide to master the emotional intelligence skills that help you read prospects and close more deals.

We dig into why value creation matters more than ever, why compliance doesn't equal security, and how AI is lowering the cost of building — and attacking — software systems. We also explore the harder questions:Are we headed toward an era where nobody believes what they see?Does AI amplify existing cybersecurity weaknesses? Is regulation the solution — or a competitive liability? And in a world where technology is commoditized, what's the real moat left for startups? This episode connects venture capital, cloud security, AI infrastructure, social media's psychological impact, and the future of trust into one central theme: AI is accelerating everything — including our mistakes. If you care about startups, cybersecurity, infrastructure, or the societal consequences of AI, this conversation goes well beyond the buzzwords.Want to learn more about securing your fleets, platforms, or mission critical systems? It's gator time, folks! It seems like we should've already covered this topic, but, nope, this is our first ever episode on the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), and we've got two ringers to help: Daniel returns (our Field Guide host who moved to Florida last year) and he's joined by his mentor in all things swamp-related, Chip Campbell. Chip spent twenty years running Okefenokee Adventures, leading interpretive tours in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, and his knowledge of alligator natural history and ecology runs deep. Thanks to our Patrons, this episode is also an on-the-road joint. The guys are deep in the Florida Everglades on a multi-day paddling trip, and they take a break at camp to talk with Chip about all things alligator — with a special focus on separating gator myths from reality. And, unfortunately for those of you crushing on Steve, this one's 100% Steve-free.This episode was recorded on Dec. 31, 2025 at Watson's Place campsite in Everglades National Park.Episode Notes and LinksAlligators, metabolism, and the “dog comparison”During the episode, Chip mentioned a study suggesting that several alligators could be maintained on roughly the same caloric intake as a single dog. We were not able to locate a study that makes that specific numerical comparison. However, the underlying idea is strongly supported by research on alligator physiology: American alligators have extremely low metabolic rates compared to warm-blooded mammals because they are ectothermic and do not spend energy maintaining body temperature. Classic physiological work shows that adult alligators can have daily energy expenditures that are only a small fraction of those of similarly sized mammals, making informal comparisons like this directionally accurate even if the exact ratio is anecdotal rather than experimental. Source: Coulson, R. A. (1989). Biochemistry and physiology of alligator metabolism in vivo. Integrative and Comparative Biology, 29(3), 921–934. https://doi.org/10.1093/icb/29.3.921Freshwater “sipping” — the study behind the observation The behavior Chip describes is documented in a study by Nifong and Lowers, which examined how coastal alligators use estuarine habitats. The authors note that after heavy rainfall, a thin layer of freshwater can temporarily sit on top of saltier water, and alligators will take advantage of this by drinking from the surface. This helps them manage hydration and salt balance in brackish environments, despite lacking the salt-excreting glands found in crocodiles. Source: Nifong, J. C., & Lowers, R. H. (2017). Reciprocal intraguild predation between Alligator mississippiensis and elasmobranchs in the southeastern United States. Southeastern Naturalist, 16(3), 383–396.Alligator growth vs. ageChip addressed the myth that alligators continue to grow throughout their life. Echoing what he reported, research on American alligators shows that although hatchlings and juveniles grow rapidly, their rate of growth slows substantially as they get older, and studies indicate they reach near-maximum body size well before the end of their lives. Long-term data suggest many alligators stop adding significant length by roughly 25–35 years of age, and more recent work has revised the classic idea of indefinite growth toward a pattern of determinate growth with a growth plateau in adulthood. Human harvest of alligators in LouisianaAs Chip said, Louisiana supports the largest wild harvest program for the American alligator in the United States, with more than 2,000 licensed hunters routinely harvesting an estimated 30,000–35,000 wild alligators annually under a regulated tagging system. In contrast, other states such as Florida have had regulated harvest programs with substantially lower annual take.” Sources: Joanen et al. (2021), Evaluation of Effects of Harvest on Alligator Populations in Louisiana, Journal of Wildlife Management; Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Alligator Annual Report (2019–2020); Hines (SEAFWA) status report on Florida alligators.Fatal Alligator AttacksIn this episode, Chip discusses the history of fatal alligator-human conflicts, highlighting the 1973 Sharon Holmes incident as the first "fully confirmed" fatal attack in modern records. While the Holmes incident is often cited as the definitive first case, there was an earlier death that some consider to be the first modern fatality. Historical records show why Chip's reference to the Holmes case being the first “fully confirmed” case is accurate:Sharon Holmes (1973): On August 16, 1973, 16-year-old Sharon Holmes was killed while swimming at Oscar Scherer State Park. This is widely cited as the first fully confirmed fatality because of the absolute nature of the evidence: the attack was witnessed by bystanders, and a subsequent necropsy of the 11-foot 3-inch alligator found conclusive physical remains. This event marked a turning point in how state agencies, like the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), tracked and verified alligator-related deaths.Allen Rice (1957): While most official FWC lists of fatal attacks begin in 1973, the 1957 death of 9-year-old Allen Rice in Eau Gallie is often mentioned as an earlier case. However, it is technically categorized as presumed. Rice went missing while fishing, and though his body was recovered with injuries consistent with an alligator and a large gator was seen nearby, there were no direct witnesses to the strike. On this episode, we dig into reports that Patek Philippe may roll back U.S. retail prices—by as much as 8%—after last year's sharp tariff- and currency-driven increases. We break down why the math isn't as simple as tariffs going down and prices following, how import costs actually work at the wholesale level, and why this move raises uncomfortable questions for collectors who bought during the peak pricing window. We then zoom out to the broader issue of volatility. From shifting tariff policy to currency swings and geopolitical uncertainty, we explain why brands are being pushed into a kind of reactive, market-based pricing that's common for commodities but highly unusual for luxury watches. We compare Patek's approach with Rolex's more measured strategy and show how very different tactics can still land brands in roughly the same place over time. Finally, we look at what this all means for the secondary market. While headline data suggests pre-owned prices stabilized in 2025, we explain why that rebound is narrowly driven by Patek, Rolex, and AP—and why value retention for most watches continues to weaken as new prices rise faster than used ones. The takeaway: the market may look calmer on the surface, but underneath, volatility remains the defining feature. What the recent changes in Venezuela means for consumers Without getting into the benefits of less drugs coming into our country, there are economic benefits from the large amount of oil reserves that are in the ground of Venezuela. The current daily consumption worldwide of oil is about 100 million barrels per day. Venezuela has in their ground over 300 billion barrels of oil. That alone would keep the world supplied for over eight years. Venezuela has the highest proven reserves in the world even above Saudi Arabia. Venezuela accounts for about 20% of the world supply of oil. Venezuela has four times the reserves compared to the US, yet in 2024 the United States produced over 13 million barrels per day compared to Venezuela producing under 1 million barrels per day. There is talk that the big oil companies could be going into Venezuela and they could definitely increase that production by a large amount, which would benefit not just Venezuela but also the world markets and the United States consumer. The way the United States consumer would benefit is from lower gas prices at the pump and with oil currently trading in the high 50s, we could see that drop to the low 50s maybe even a little bit below that. This will not only put more money in US consumers' pockets, but it would also help the Venezuela population as the production of oil would create many good paying jobs and could lead to a ripple effect for other businesses with more money coming into their economy. The recent events occurred just a few days ago and a lot has yet to be played out, but make no mistake there are many benefits if Venezuela can produce a lot more oil for the world.   It's a new year, is it time to hire or change to a new investment advisor? With the new year, investors should take a look to see how their investments have done and how their investment advisor has been working with them. The beginning of the year is a fresh start, so it's time to see what your percentage return was on your portfolio in 2025 and evaluate if your advisor kept you updated and gave you the customer service you need like returning your phone calls in a reasonable timeframe. You don't want to jump from the pan into the fire, so when you're looking for a new investment advisor, be sure that the company and the advisor are full fiduciaries, which means they must do what is best for you, not what is best for themselves. Ask yourself the question, is the advisor trying to sell me products that he or she makes a big commission off of? That could be a red flag that they don't have your best interest in mind. It's also important to understand the investment strategy the firm and the advisor use. Do they use mutual funds or build your own portfolio with individual equities and investments that are liquid and don't tie your money up for years to come in case the investment underperforms. I always believe it is worth asking the advisor how they manage their own personal portfolio. If it's good enough for them, why is it not good enough for you? I know some advisors will say they have different objectives, but I think everyone has the same objective of making a reasonable return on their investments. And lastly, don't be afraid to ask how they get paid when managing your investments. It may seem like an uncomfortable question, but if it's an excessive amount, that can be a red flag. If the advisor is trying to dodge the question, that means to me, they're trying to hide something from you at the very beginning, and you should runaway immediately. Take your time to find the right advisor, if you feel pressure from constant phone calls and high sales tactics, you probably want to look for someone else to work with on your investments.   The labor market ends the year on a soft note This jobs report was special considering it was the first on time report in 3 months, but I'd say the data was lackluster. Nonfarm payrolls in December increased by 50,000, which was short of the estimate of 76,000. The two prior months also saw downward revisions that totaled 76,000. For the full year, payroll employment grew by 584,000, which equates to a monthly average of about 49,000 new jobs per month. This was less than 2024's gain of 2 million jobs or about 168,000 per month and actually registers as the worst payroll growth outside of a recession since 2003. While this all might sound troubling, it is important to remember that changes to government jobs had a large impact on the data. Since reaching a peak in January, government employment fell by 277,000 jobs. This obviously created a huge headwind for headline payroll growth. With that said, the labor market was still in a slower growth environment, and I continue to believe that will be the case as we move forward considering the unemployment rate still remains healthy at 4.4%. It's also important to remember that of those counted as unemployed, about 26% or 1.9 million people are considered long-term unemployed as they have been jobless for 27 weeks or more. I always do wonder how actively these people are looking for jobs. In terms of areas of strength in the report, both healthcare and foodservices and drinking places remained healthy. Health care employment was up 21,000 in the month and for the full year averaged monthly gains of 34,000. This was down from 2024's monthly average of 56,000, but still strong. Foodservices and drinking places saw employment grow by 27,000 jobs in the month and for the full year averaged monthly gains of 12,000 jobs, which was similar to 2024's average of 11,000 jobs added per month. Retail trade was the real headwind for the month as employment declined by 25,000 jobs. This could be due to seasonal changes, but it was interesting to see retail trade employment showed little net change in both 2024 and 2025. The other major industries in the report showed little to no changes in the month. Overall, I believe this continues to show that we remain in a slow hire/low fire labor environment and I don't see much evidence that will change this year.    Financial Planning: Mortgage-Backed Security Purchase Lowers Mortgage Rates The U.S. government's announcement of a $200 billion purchase of mortgage-backed securities (MBS) through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is already pushing 30-year mortgage rates below 6%, creating an opportunity for homeowners and prospective buyers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Reserve lowered interest rates and also purchased MBS, which helped push mortgage rates down.  Mortgage rates are not directly tied to the Federal Reserve interest rates, but the purchase of mortgage-backed securities is something that would directly lower mortgage rates. This is because investors purchase mortgages after origination for the interest income paid by homeowners, so Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac buying these securities increases demand which lowers the interest rates borrowers get on mortgages. For those with higher mortgage rates, this could be an opportunity to cut that down.  I don't think we are yet at a point where it makes sense to buy down the rates further, but there is no limit to the number of refinances someone can do.   It may be best to refinance now and then again in another year or so.   Companies Discussed: Tyson Foods, Inc. (TSN), Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT), Generac Holdings Inc. (GNRC) & Seagate Technology Holdings plc (STX)

Or I should go a different route totally. Thanks for answering my question. P.S. Fuck Aaron Duran84 - I want to get into thermals, My budget is 2k. I have a Rix tourer night vision that sparked my interest in night hunting. My only complaint is scanning with the optic on the gun is tiresome. Should I get a monocular or a scope, so it could be dual purpose with a QD mount? What are some recommendations that the crew has thanks.   Standard Arms - Show is great. Thank you for serving our community. I am small kitchen table FFL. It's been a great ride, with a healthy dose of fear! I am thinking about a laser engraver. I would want to it to be capable of properly marking firearms if I need to. ( the ATF spec of .003 inch depth I believe). If I'm investing in a laser engraver I'd use it to put my logo on stuff like magazines, key chains etc. This would probably be something that I would look at in a year and wonder why the F did I buy this thing. That being said I'd really like to spend as little as possible. Thanks. Zac C - A- Aron, My gun shop shouldn't charge for transfers Shawn, Aaron, your being retardedAlso Shawn, This company that came up with a great idea to put airline policies on a QR code and sell them for $30 should do it for free cause it's a sErViCe tO ThE CoMmunITy That is all. ARDREW479 Your Mom - Let's talk about pistol recoil springs and how they impact reliability. I recently added a Radian Afterburner + Ramjet to my Glock 19X and also swapped in the Radian Compressor adjustable guide rod. The Compressor includes 13, 15, and 18lbs springs. I started with the 18lbs spring and it functions properly with both 115 and 124s. Would swapping to the lighter weight spring provide any value? Is it better to stick with the heavy spring? Thoughts? Dependable Don - I was relistening to crawler Carl and heard the ai mention hucow fiction. I looked it up and I'm scared. What are your opinions on hucow?   The winner of this week's swag pack is Ray G!
