Following a casual comment at work a few years ago, Dott Dacey and Odette Jordan discovered they both had a hidden desire to not only walk the Kokoda Trail but also absorb the spiritual experiences of those who had gone before them … especially those soldiers who had defended the Australian heritage in WWII. They both challenged themselves to reach the physical and emotional heights of successfully walking Kokoda. Val and Faith are joined in the studio today by Tommy Quick who has just finished cycling the four most extreme points of Australia. We all share our bike moments, and as you might expect, Tommy's was a bit more epic than the rest! We take a look at some news, including a report in The Guardian over the weekend detailing how Australia's road toll has risen over the past twelve months, particulalry for those on bikes. Followed by the City of Yarra's consultation on Wellington Street, make sure you have your say!We also catch up on the Critical Mass North held on last Friday which saw over 200 people riding to raise awareness for safer infrstcructure for cyclists in Darebin and Yarra. Check out some of the highlights at this thread. Tommy tells us the inspiration behind his challenge to ride to the four most extreme points of Australia, after he suffered a stroke at twelve years old. Discovering that staying active helped him manage the challenges he faced physically and mentally, he set himself the goal of walking the Kokoda Trail before investing in a tricycle and looking for his next challenge. Cycling over 9000kms on his recumbent tricycle Tommy's challenge was made even more difficult after he was hit by a car in 2021 and needed extensive rehabilitation to carry on his journey. So far he has raised over $100,000.00 to raise awareness of young stroke for the Stroke Foundation but you still have time to make a donation yourself! As usual we run out of time far too soon! You can follow Tommy's journey at the4points.org and find all of his social media links there too. Heads up: Tommy is hosting a fundraiser in Moonee Ponds on MOvember 11th. All the details here.

The Principles of War - Lessons from Military History on Strategy, Tactics and Leadership.
This is the second episode in our Kokoda Track series looking at the performance of the 53rd Battalion. The 53rd, a militia Battalion, had some incredibly brave men. Virtually untrained, poorly equipped, with inexperienced leaders, they fought a battle hardened enemy in some of the worst terrain in the world. This episodes looks at just 4 weeks in the history of the Battalion, from when the started up the track, during their contact with the Japanese and through till the time the were order to leave the battlefield. There is much to learn from their experience. We look for lessons in training, leadership, strategic surprise and mobilisation from the 53rd on the Kokoda Trail. Check out the show notes for the podcast for all of the information that we cover in this episode as well as the images and other details that didn't make it into the podcast.
The Principles of War - Lessons from Military History on Strategy, Tactics and Leadership.
This episodes starts a new series looking at the Kokoda Track at the tactical, operational and strategic levels. This series will look for lessons from the experience of the 53rd Battalion. The 53rd is a sister Battalion to the 49th and the excellent 39th Battalions. There is a marked difference between the 39th and 53rd. Despite incredible bravery, the 53rd struggled to achieve some of that tasks assigned to it (through no fault of their own.) Indeed, many of the men went on to fight bravely in the 55th/53rd and 39th Battalion after the 53rd was disbanded. We look for lessons in training, leadership, strategic surprise and mobilisation from the 53rd on the Kokoda Trail. Check out the show notes for the podcast for all of the information that we cover in this episode as well as the images and other details that didn't make it into the podcast.

Trigger warning: this episode discusses anxiety, depression and agoraphobia. We have spoken about anxiety and depression on this podcast before, but what happens when the panic attacks and symptoms are so bad that you end up feeling too scared to even leave your home.A small town country kid who never quite fit in. that's the feeling that would follow Daniel Bentley for decades and eventually lead him to developing a number of mental health conditions.Battling with depression and feeling stuck in a life that he felt was going nowhere, at the age of 23 he packed up and moved 2000km across the country in search or something different. His depression followed him though and he eventually developed severe social anxiety and agoraphobia. Spending most of his 20's as a shadow of a person locked in a cage of his own making he finally sought help. This episode is a fascinating look into how the panic attacks of an agoraphobic can be the very thing that lead someone to isolating themselves even further. But Daniel's story isn't just of his illness, but also of his extraordinary journey to overcome and grow beyond it.In today's episode Dan shares:- The isolation, depression and anxiety he suffered from even during childhood- How the panic attacks of agoraphobia led to a cycle of anxiety and depression.- The ways he pushed himself past his comfort zone and made his mean health struggles his super powerKey Quotes“My assumption that I was going through this school as a complete loner, I don't really matter.”“The more I spoke to people about it, the more better I felt about myself.”“You have to arrange your life around avoiding these attacks and that basically becomes very boring.”“if something came up and I was afraid of it, I knew I had to do it.”“You create the situation you're in. Have you ever been to Toowoomba? No, neither had I. Changing the habit of a lifetime on a recent road-trip in Queensland, I took the 2 hour drive west of Brisbane to the Great Dividing Range, where Woombie or Tbar as the locals call it, clings to the escarpment, 700 metres above sea level. As you enter from the east, the city seemingly dangles on the edge of the elevated plateau, overlooking the undulating green patchwork of the Lockyer Valley. Beyond the city limits of this sprawling country hub, Toowoomba is enrobed by the agricultural powerhouse of the Darling Downs region. Toowoomba is Australia's largest inland city and it's Queensland's Garden City, playing host to a fiendishly popular Carnival of Flowers in September - the longest running floral event of its kind in Australia. It welcomes hundreds of thousands of hyper-coloured flowers in full bloom, planted across the city's parks and public spaces. But it's not just the plants that attract out-of-towners. A glut of gorgeous, manicured gardens lie within the city's boundaries, graced with stately homes and broad tree-lined streets. To help get my bearings, I joined a two hour guided excursion with Lindsay from Toowoomba Sightseeing, introducing me to the city staples, from the historic CBD to panoramic vistas over the range. Lindsay remarked that Toowoomba is like a volcanic saucer, with rich red soils. “Everything grows here.” An essential stop is at Picnic Point, located on the eastern side of Toowoomba, serving up enormous views across the topographical grandeur of the region. A picturesque highlight is the imposing sight of Table Top Mountain. Its name is rather self-explanatory and looks like a mesa from the American Southwest. 600 metres high, the two-hour return climb itself is quite demanding with a lot of large steps over the Camel's Hump and a scramble just before the summit. Used as a training track for hikers prepping for Mount Kilimanjaro and the Kokoda Trail for years, stick to the well-worn trail. But the sweet reward is at the summit, flat-topped and treeless, is the unrivalled horizon-wide panoramic fix. Back in the city, street art is one Toowoomba's calling cards, with a spree of laneways, building walls and public spaces vividly cast in eye-catching works. There's a dedicated Street Art Trail that weaves many of the works together, including Mark Lane, Bank Lane and Searle's Walk. But it's Neil Street where most of the action is, with over 50 murals to feast your eyes on. Adding further texture and character to the city centre, Toowoomba's old bones have been lovingly preserved, with impeccably maintained facades gracing the city centre and some showpiece buildings, including more than 50 heritage-listed sites. The bedazzling 1911 Empire Theatre is the pride of locals, with its resplendent art deco lobby. Then there's the old post office and courthouse, venerable sandstone masterpieces from the late 19th century. For a complete change of scenery, I headed to Ju Raku En, the delightful Zen-like Japanese Gardens, located at the University of Southern Queensland. I spent an hour casually zoned out admiring the five-hectare garden, crowned with a rippling lake, carefully aligned boulders, conifers, bamboo stands, cherry blossom trees, photo perfect bridges and curvaceous paths, in one of the largest Japanese gardens in Australia.Next up, The Cobb & Co Museum which is home to the National Carriage collection's huge array of vehicles, horse-drawn carriages, outback memorabilia, and extensive displays. The National Carriage Collection comprises 47 restored horse-drawn vehicles, which played an important role in Queensland's development. Established in 1853 by Freeman Cobb with the intention of initially servicing the Victorian goldfields, Cobb & Co quickly developed to become the most successful company of its kind in Australasia during the 19th Century, pioneering transport routes, delivering mail,...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Entrepreneur Andrew Morello has made what Nipun Mehta calls “giftivism”, the practice of radically generous anonymous acts that change the world, a driving force in his life. He believes generosity can change the world, where both the receivers, givers and the community reap the rewards. As you'll find out in the continuation of our interview, this approach to life has seen Andrew create incredible success for himself and others. Andrew is one of those rare people that you meet whose massive heart, genuine care and moving motivation inspires all of those around him to take their lives to the next level. As you know, Andrew Morello came to fame as the first Australian Apprentice. He's now an awarded entrepreneur, investor, author, and Head of Business Development at The Entourage, which is Australia's largest training institution for entrepreneurs and business owners. He also spent 10 years alongside Mark Bouris, building out the Yellow Brick Road Wealth Management branch network nationally. Morello has also personally built an impressive property portfolio, which he details blow by blow in our conversation, and his endless generosity has also led him to drive numerous community projects across Australia and internationally, including being a Founding Board Member of Project Gen Z, a social enterprise which runs entrepreneur and development programs for disadvantaged children. In recent years, Morello has also climbed the summit at Mount Kinabalu in Borneo and completed the Kokoda Trail to raise money for the Seed Foundation, which supports indigenous health programs in remote communities. Morello is also an active member of Australia's entrepreneurial and real estate communities, an engaging and charismatic speaker, and passionate about sharing his successes and creating success for other entrepreneurs, business owners and investors to help you and others reach your full potential and not waste your precious life. In the concluding part of our special conversation with the Mighty Morello today, we dive into the importance of leverage, we break down blow by blow Morello's own personal property investment journey, we talk about the importance of being in the business of property, he unveils his best and worst investments, he breaks down his Morello Matrix for property success along with the power of his daily affirmation and how he has leveraged his celebrity to achieve great things in the world for himself and others. And if you want to experience the warmth of his generosity personally while taking your business to the next level, reach out to him at The Entourage via https://the-entourage.com where you'll join an elite coaching and training community for business owners everywhere. And following Andrew's generosity inspiration, we again want to challenge you to make random acts of kindness and generosity for your family and work as your mission in the month ahead - you'll be teaching your kids and colleagues to pay it forward and show kindness to others every day in a variety of ways. So start right now with your generosity 30-day challenge. Just choose and carry out a random act of kindness every day. Because by the time you finish, you'll have developed the habit of generosity and you'll be well on your way to making the world a kinder place. Andrew Morello has made generosity the underlying driving force in his life and it has created unequalled success for others as well as himself. Andrew, who you will remember from the first Australian Apprentice show, is a living, breathing example of the benefits that generosity has for you and the world around you. The Mighty Morello is one of those rare people that you meet who's massive heart, genuine care and moving motivation inspires all of those around him to take their lives to the next level and to be living the dream, as my wife Sonya and I found out when we spent time with him at The Entourage a few years back. Kurt Fearnley is Australia's pre-eminent Good Strong Bloke (GSB). Over a 25-year career, he's amassed three Paralympic Gold medals, two Olympic silver medals and seven world titles. He's also crawled the Kokoda Trail, crewed the winning yacht in the Sydney to Hobart, and jagged an OAM. We hear what it's like to be an 18-year-old competing in front of 118,000 people at Sydney 2000, to winning Gold in Athens 2004 (despite busting a tyre 5km from the finish line). We discuss the pressure of perfection at the elite level - including Simone Biles' exit from Tokyo 2020 - and the 'feast or famine' nature of life after sport for many Olympians. We also get the low down on which Australians to look out for in the upcoming Paralympics, which kick off August 24.Audio production thanks to Tim 'T-Dog' Eldridge, with graphic design by Julia Edwards.Any questions/comments/grievances, hit us up at haveagopodcast@gmail.com. Heidi Smith may look like a cowgirl, and she is, but she is also much more. Heidi has had her fair share of challenges which she handles with grace, courage, love and hope. She doesn't make excuses for herself and is comfortable in her vulnerability. She is an incredibly strong person in so many ways but also has an inherent softness and kindness.Heidi speaks about endorphins, getting out of bed when you don't feel like it and putting one foot in front of the other. From the Kokoda Trail to Everest Base Camp and everything in between, this is Heidi's story.
In this episode, I talked to Dr. Karl James, the head of military history at the Australian War Memorial. The book he edited, Kokoda: Beyond the Legend, was the principal source for this series, and let me tell you, it's a fantastic read! Various contributors, including Antony Beevor, weave together the story of Kokoda, both past and present. A truly comprehensive account of the battle for the Owen Stanley mountains, Kokoda: Beyond the Legend, also contextualizes the campaign within the wider war. Like any fair bit of history, the book tells the story of struggle and endurance, suffering and success, from every angle; Allied, Japanese, and Native giving each their proper due. Dr. James was a blast to chat with, funny, engaged, and a man that knows his stuff; he was kind enough to give me a full hour of his Sunday morning. The invasion of Australian ruled Papua New Guinea in 1942 by the Japanese presented a direct threat to Australia and to Supreme Commander in the South West Pacific Douglas MacArthur's plans to retake the Japanese held Pacific. The tenuous fighting across the Owen Stanley mountain range by the retreating Australian 'diggers' was one of the most desperate and savage campaigns of the war in rain drenched jungle conditions. Often overshadowed by the fighting on the Kokoda Trail, Australian troops played key roles in the Guadalcanal campaign to prevent the Japanese from gaining control of communication and supply routes between Australia and the US in 1942 and early 1943. Military Historian Jay Walsh talks about this bloody campaign on the island of Guadalcanal in his military snapshot on "Remember When".
This episode will tell an aspiring trekker exactly what they need to do in their training to get fit, strong and resilient to conquer the Kokoda Trail! The Kokoda Trail is a pilgrimage for Australian trekkers. Renowned for its rough terrain, stunning landscapes and it's wartime history, it is something which has sat on so many hikers bucket list for years. But while we know it is a serious physical and mental challenge, unfortunately, the majority of the training advice out there for this adventure is sub-par (to say the least!) Until now. Once you listen to this episode, you will have a clear understanding of exactly what you need to do to training for the Kokoda track. You will learn: The 4 major physical demands of the Kokoda Track (which you need to ensure you cover in your preparation and training) Why you would be crazy not to train for Kokoda (or any other trek for that matter) Why I don't recommend you 'just go out and hike' (and why following a structured strength and conditioning program is the BEST course of action) How to plan your trek training before Kokoda (so it can be the MOST effective at improving your fitness with the LEAST chance of injury) Why strength training before Kokoda is an absolute MUST (plus some simple rules to get the most out of this) What 'cardio' training I recommend before Kokoda (Hint: It's not High-Intensity Interval Training!) How to prepare for the hot and humid weather of Kokoda (a few simple tips which can make a massive difference to your comfort and performance on this tropical trek) How to 'self-treat' any aches, pains or niggles which creep up while on the track (which you can do with your water bottle or trekking pole!) Some dead simple nutrition advice (which every Kokoda trekker needs to be aware of!) == Need some help getting fit, strong and resilient to conquer the Kokoda Track?
