Welcome to The Zenergy Podcast! On today's episode, host Karan Takhar, sits down with Heidi Binko, Co-Founder and CEO of Just Transition Fund. They begin with an overview of JTF, the work they are doing in coal communities around the U.S., and a summary of the broader energy landscape. Then, they discuss what happens to a local economy when their coal plant shuts down and how JTF works to support these communities during a time of transition. Heidi and Karan chat about what's driving coal out of these communities, what strategies JTF employs to reach the hardest hit communities, and what conversations they are having with community members. JTF has helped secure over $2 billion in grants and other assistance and has also aided in connecting coal communities across the nation so they can share what they have done to grow their economy. They touch briefly on federal funding, why investments such as the IRA and the CHIPS Act may not have landed with people in these communities as well as what impact the current federal funding freeze has on energy projects. Finally, Heidi shares her excitement for JTF's 10-year anniversary. Between the presidencies of Lorenzo Snow in 1898 and Russell M. Nelson today, there have been a few key clarifications relative to the inner workings of Church government at the level of the Church presidency. And on today's episode of Church History Matters we want to talk about them! The first of these clarifications deals with the confusion introduced during Joseph F. Smith's presidency surrounding the role and position of the presiding Church Patriarch within the Church's hierarchy. The second is regarding the important question about who can serve in the First Presidency? Is it entirely the prerogative of the President of the Church to choose who serves as his counselors, or are there constraints in place which he must abide by when doing so? And the third clarification deals with what happens when you have a Church president who is incapacitated due to poor health, and therefore cannot actively lead the Church? To what degree can his counselors lead the Church without him? And what, if any, restraints are there to their authority in this circumstance?   For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

The cost of poor health: What does rising health-related benefit spending mean for the UK and its next government?

Health-related benefit spending is rising – particularly among children and younger adults – and this increase is forecast to accelerate in the years ahead. With record numbers of people claiming disability benefits, incapacity benefits or both, there are serious questions to answer about what lies behind this trend and its impact on the health of those affected, the public finances and the wider economy. Worryingly, too often the understanding of this change is poor, posing a major challenge for whoever governs after the election. What is driving the rise in health-related benefit spending? Is it the inevitable consequence of an ageing society, a sign that we are a sicker Britain than we used to be or have changes to the benefit system over the last 14 years played a role? How big an issue could this be over the next parliament, and how are the main political parties planning to address it? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of the key highlights from its latest General Election 24 briefing on health-related benefits, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, we will hear from leading experts on what's driving the rise in claims and spending, previous efforts to tackle the issues, and what might lie ahead. While the government has introduced measures to increase the number of nurses in Aotearoa, staffing shortages are still frequent in wards across the country.  Additionally, there are worries that the recently scrapped Te Aka Whai Ora could impact the already struggling sector, taking focus away from those who need health support most and potentially increasing the workload for frontline health workers.  Wire host Castor spoke to the president of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation, Anne Daniels, about nursing shortages and low health funding in Aotearoa from a frontline perspective.

The default for living in the West is poor health. The ills of modern society aren't just numerous, they are also entirely by design. Sick, unhealthy people make for better consumers and they are much easier to manipulate.   There's a mission to undo our personal sovereignty, and the greatest insulation is optimization and refusing to get fleeced by a system that wants to control us.   What do people get wrong about exercise? Can muscle bolster us against the attacks of the system? In this episode, I'm joined by personal trainer, co-founder and co-host of Mind Pump Media, Sal DiStefano. We talk about how to make yourself antifragile in a world that wants to break you.   The default for living in the West is poor health. It is weird and strange to be healthy, fit and mobile if you live in modern Western society. -Sal DiStefano   Things We Learned    - How we got here  Is the food society is consuming destroying our bodies because we want easier, faster, enjoyable and palatable?    - Bolster yourself to be sovereign  How do we move our bodies in a way that adapts to the problems and challenges of modern society?   - How to avoid overtraining  What's the difference between a workout that's optimal and a workout you can tolerate?    - Worshiping science is dangerous  Whether we know it or not, we worship something, how do we make sure we're not worshiping something that wants to manipulate us?   Guest Bio Sal Di Stefano is a personal trainer and co-founder of Mind Pump Media and co-host of Mind Pump, an online radio show/podcast that is dedicated to providing truthful fitness and health information. He is also the designer of the Muscular Adaptation Programming System (MAPS Fitness Products). Sal is dedicated to prioritizing health over appearance, and he aims to shift the direction of the fitness industry from aesthetic- and insecurity-based to one based in self-love and self-care. The Black community faces several challenges from birth to death. Racism is built into many of our institutions: police, school, medicine, transportation, careers, housing (redlining). The physical and mental health issues compounding daily amount to a lifelong assault on Black Americans, and their health deteriorates faster and more often than the rest of the population. With so many barriers to the pursuit of happiness and prosperity, banning diversity programs from every state college adds insult to injury, and can only be seen as a cruel political ploy with devastating results. You should see professional consultation for your individual tax and legal situation. Chip Franklin: All right, welcome to Practical Tax with tax attorney Steve Moskowitz. I'm Chip Franklin and Steve, boy, I tell you, I'm excited about today's show because we cover a wide variety of areas, all which have at some heart of it, like most things, to do with the taxes we pay and what that means about our quality of life. And I mean, obviously with the extensions and the tax, even this has been a really busy time for you, this time of year. When you see people that are filing these extensions, I mean, I'm one of them. Well, what happens to people that they would file this late in the year? Steve Moskowitz: Oh, that's very common. And for example, we oftentimes tell clients, we advise them to file extensions because you know how I've talked about retirement accounts and how that's such a benefit? Cash flow. So what happens is you have with a lot of the accounts, you have up to the time of filing the return plus extension to set them up and fund them. So I suppose you have this situation: you're a business person, and this is a tiny little bit technical because it gets into the accounting and the tax. You've made a big profit on your taxes, but you don't have any cash because you spent your money on inventory, which is an asset on the balance sheet. So they say, "Well, wait a minute, I've made all this money on my tax return but I don't have any cash because I reinvest it in the business," and that's sitting there in inventory. So you say, "Well all right, that gives me an extra half a year to earn," and then the money that I earn, I can put into the pension plan on or before the due date, including extension. Again, that date varies depending on the form of entity and the plan you have. But that's a good reason to do it. Chip Franklin: Yeah. Steve Moskowitz: And then you legally greatly lower your taxes with money you've earned three quarters of the way into year two, that you're deducting from year one where most things you have to write the check in year one. This is an exception, that's one of many. Chip Franklin: Yeah. I think I've filed an extension for 20 straight years now. And it's not for any of the reasons you said, it's most- Steve Moskowitz: A lot of times you're waiting for documents from others. Chip Franklin: Right, and that happens too. All right. One of the biggest issues facing not just Americans but almost everybody in North America and in Europe, is healthcare and how it affects not only obviously businesses and individuals, but our society as a whole. Our first guest today is Dr. Gregg Larivee, I almost messed his name up, Dr. Gregg Larivee, and he's created the Integrated Medical Center in Florida and he's been treating NFL, MLB, PGA, and NBA athletes, plus people from all sorts of life for more than 20 years. And he is nice enough to take the time to join us here on Practical Tax. Doc, good to have you here. Thank you so much. Dr. Gregg Larivee: Thanks for having me. Chip Franklin: We had a great conversation before we came on about sports and I think sports is for many Americans, is an escape, but for many of these athletes, obviously it's something they can't escape as when they leave the sport later on and the injur...
