[Kim Bode / 8ThirtyFour Integrated Communications' spotlight, participant in SBAM's Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship] Chris Holman welcomes Lillian Werbin, CEO/Co-Owner, Elderly Instruments, East Lansing, MI. This is the fourth of five interviews in a series. There were several questions Chris wanted to find out from Lillian: About Your Business ● Welcome back Lillian, remind the Michigan business community about your business? ● What is the importance of engaging and strengthening the community along with your business? ● How have your past experiences helped you grow your company? Inaugural Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship ● How did you learn about the fellowship? ● How did you feel when you heard you were accepted? Impact ● What are the biggest things you learned from the fellowship? ● How has being a part of the fellowship impacted you and your business? ● What would you say to women business owners who are considering applying for future cohorts? Small Business Association of Michigan Foundation Announces Inaugural Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship New Program Addresses Multiple Challenges for Second-Stage, Women-Owned Businesses LANSING, Mich. – The SBAM Foundation (SBAMF), supported by its parent organization, the Small Business Association of Michigan, has launched its Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship (WEF) program and chosen 11 businesses for the first cohort. The eight-month initiative will equip these second-stage, women-owned businesses with resources to overcome diverse challenges and scale their operations. Women-owned businesses are a vital part of Michigan's economy, representing 43.2% of the state's 902,131 small businesses—higher than the national average. Detroit, in particular, was ranked as the top U.S. metropolitan area for growth in women-owned businesses. “The launch of the Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship is an exciting step toward ensuring that second-stage, women-owned businesses receive the targeted support they need to thrive, said Brian Calley, SBAM President & CEO. “This program will provide invaluable resources, from mentorship and business certifications to networking opportunities and access to capital, helping these entrepreneurs overcome the unique challenges they face.” Qualifying businesses have more than one employee in addition to the owner, have been in operation for at least two years, and generate a minimum of $500,000 in annual revenue. Here are the businesses that were selected for the inaugural cohort: ● Eagle Specialties, LLC ● Elderly Instruments ● Fido & Stitch ● Groovy Donuts ● Jungle Jane Promotions ● Marshall Holding ● Neuco Furniture & Upholstery ● Pioneer Machine and Technology, Inc ● The Betty Brigade ● Winsome Travel Design ● Wolverine Pickleball Recent data underscores the need for the support provided by this new program. Only 10% of women business owners report securing a small business loan, and women-owned businesses receive just 2.2% of all venture capital funding in the U.S. Operationally, 59% struggle with hiring and retaining qualified staff, while 80% face difficulties dealing with increased costs. "Women-owned businesses in Michigan confront a multitude of challenges that hinder their growth potential," said Kim Bode, Program Director. "From financial constraints to operational difficulties, our fellowship is designed to address these issues comprehensively." To address these issues, the Women's Entrepreneurial Fellowship offers: ● One-on-one mentorship with established business leaders ● Monthly learning sessions on critical business topics ● Networking opportunities with investors and industry leaders ● Guidance on accessing capital and growth resources ● Support in obtaining relevant business certifications ● Specialized courses on financial management, marketing, and operational efficiency

She often works with executive teams to engage conflict productively, repair working relationships, and implement change in complex organizations. She has published articles in The New York Times and the Harvard Business Review and appeared on Oprah, CNBC's Power Lunch, and NPR. She is coauthor along with Douglas Stone of The New York Times bestseller Thanks for the Feedback and also now, in it's third edition, co-author with Douglas Stone and Bruce Patton of the iconic bestseller, Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most*. When our intentions are good, it's hard to appreciate how we could have had such negative impact on someone else. It's equally challenging to navigate a tough conversation when someone else's words or actions have wronged us, even if that's not what they intended. In this conversation, Sheila and I discuss how to shift just a bit to help our difficult conversations go better. Key Points Intent does not equal impact. It's a mistake to assume that we know the other party's intentions. It's a mistake to assume that good intentions erase bad impact. Prevent the first mistake by attempting to separate intent from impact. Use these three questions: Actions: What did the other person actually say or do? Impact: What was the impact of this on me? Assumption: Based on this impact, what assumption am I making about what the other person intended? To present the second mistake, listen first for feelings before sharing intent. It's helpful also to reflect on your own intent, which may not always be as pure as initially recognized. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Nailing the basics - Theories of change, published by Aidan Alexander on July 16, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Why write a post about theories of change? As participants in a movement with 'effective' in its name, it's easy to think of ourselves as being above falling for the most common mistakes made in the non-profit sector more broadly. We're grappling with the cutting-edge stuff, not the basics, right? But we need to beware of this kind of complacency. It's crucial to nail the basics, like theories of change, and far fewer EA organizations do this than you'd expect. That includes Charity Entrepreneurship, the organization I work at, where we teach participants in our Incubation Program and Foundation Program about the importance of theories of change, and yet until today we didn't even have our own theory of change on our website! That's why we decided to share this post on theories of change - potentially the first of a series on 'nailing the basics' of effective non-profit work, if people are interested. This post is mostly made up of an excerpt from our forthcoming book on effective grantmaking ('How to Launch a High-Impact Foundation'), followed by a discussion of the theory of change for our Incubation Program. If you'd like to be notified when this book is published, you can let us know here. [Note: Applications are now open for CE's Incubation Program] TL;DR It is very common for non-profit organizations (even EA orgs) to have no public theory of change, or to have a poor one. This is a big problem, because theories of change are the business models of the nonprofit world - you shouldn't launch, fund or work for a project that doesn't have a strong one! A theory of change explicitly articulates the cause-and-effect steps for how a project or organization can turn inputs into a desired impact on the world (i.e. it's their theory of how they'll make a change). They generally include the following sections: Inputs / activities: What the project or organization does to create change (e.g. "distribute bednets") Outputs: The tangible effects generated by the inputs (e.g. "beneficiaries have access to malaria nets") Intermediate outcomes: The outputs' effects, including benefits for the beneficiary, (e.g. "malaria nets are used" and "reduced incidence of malaria") Impact: What we're ultimately solving, and why the intermediate outcomes matter (e.g. "lives saved") Best practices when crafting a theory of change (i.e. for creators): Invest sufficiently in understanding the problem context (i.e. understanding the needs and incentives of the beneficiaries and other stakeholders, as well as barriers to change and the economic & political context) Map the causal pathway backwards from impact to activities Question every causal step (is it clear why A should cause B? how might it fail?) Hallmarks of an excellent theory of change (i.e. for reviewers): A focused suite of activities The evidence and assumptions behind each step are explicitly named The relative confidence of each step is clear It is clear who the actor is in each step Common mistakes to avoid in theories of change are: Not making fundamental impact the goal (e.g., stopping at 'increased immunizations' instead of 'improved health') Being insufficiently detailed: (a) making large leaps between each step, (b) combining multiple major outcomes into one step (e.g. 'government introduces and enforces regulation'). Setting and forgetting (instead of regularly iterating on it) Not building your theory of change into a measurement plan The 'what' and 'why' of a theory of change Building something complicated without an explicit plan is risky. From skyscrapers to software, ambitious projects need detailed blueprints. When building an effective nonprofit organization, the theory of change is that blueprint. ...

In fact, you can start today by doing something as simple as walking down to your local playground and picking up the trash. The point of transition is for you to get more fulfillment, freedom, purpose, and happiness out of life. Before you transition out of a company, give yourself some time to assess the situation. Ask around with quality questions in order for you to get all the facts that you need to make a truth-driven decision. First, you need to make sure that you're aligned with your authentic identity. Second, be connected to a team of people that support you and your mission. Lastly, create. "If you want to know how to jump out of bed in the morning, stop thinking about how bad your life is, and know that there are so many people who need you to just be a better leader." —  James Hilliard  Connect with James Hilliard: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jameshilliardprofileFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/careerandmissiongrowtFacebook page: https://www.facebook.com/James.Hilliard.Page/ Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/jamesahilliard/LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/-jameshilliard CONNECT WITH CHABIDAYE:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chabidaye.ramnath.3Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chabidaye/Website: https://leadandlift.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chabidayejaglalramnath/  Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Do you feel lonely being a DEI leader?Social change requires more and more people to step up and lead in order to create a critical mass. We need collective action. We need networks of support and skillsharing. We need coaching and mentorship, ongoing training and a network of peers. DEI champions should not have to feel like they are doing it alone. In episode 6 of A Recipe for Transformation, Chrysta Wilson speaks about creating a movement of outcomes focused leaders through bringing people on the DEI frontline together, highlighting: How learning communities create accelerated change through cross-pollination, building relationships and sharing resources Why learning is enhanced when we learn both from experts and peers The diverse skill set needed by DEI leaders and the challenge of getting comprehensive training for all these skillsThe magic of the collective flow state and how it creates impactWhat happens at the DEI Dinner Party and how it meets the complex needs of the DEI learning community by collapsing time “The reason why learning communities like the DEI Dinner Party are so powerful is that when we come together we activate what's called the “collective flow state”. When this collective flow state is activated, our awareness is heightened and our ability to move into action is accelerated. Our ability to make connections to concepts bigger than ourselves is now possible. Our mental and physical performance goes through the roof. AND, being in this flow state is associated with a sense of wellbeing and increased happiness.” Chrysta WilsonS2 E6, A Recipe for Transformation www.RecipeForTransformation.comConnect with Chrysta:https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrystawilson/https://www.instagram.com/wilsonandassociatesconsulting/

To build them up or tear them down? Is it an attack on that individual? Are you betraying their trust?2.     Tone: How is the tone by which the information is shared? Watch body language and verbal cues. 3.     Impact: What is the impact of the information given? Is it out of genuine concern that the information is being shared? When an individual in being gossiped about it is an attack of the image of God in that person. Gossip has no landing pad, once it leaves one's mouth, it is passed on to others that put their spin on it and pass it on. It cannot be taken back.  1.     Create an atmosphere that keeps a gossip away. 2.     Encourage someone you know that gossips to use their filter.3.     Pray before you speak – Lord, help me process, understand and use this information the way I am supposed to whether that is sharing with a trusted person or keep to myself.

Quotes of Impact “What we help address in our program that a lot of others don't, is that individual and customized aspect that we put together with our client to help build their foundational business strategy.” “It's really important to us that we work with you collaboratively, that you're not just thrown onto a platform to go through and learn all of this stuff and then ask questions, watch some videos, and figure it out on your own.” “One of the things that we believe every entrepreneur who is in this space, if you're serving others, is relationship building– that is a foundational pillar for everybody. It may look different, you may need to have a larger network or smaller network, but absolutely everybody needs to have this relationship building aspect put into their business.” “There are some coaches out there who are going to teach you a skill, it might be a LinkedIn coach, or it might be someone who is a sales coach, or a speaking coach. That's really teaching you one singular skill, and you can get that through either one-on-one or a program or a course, but what we're doing at Encore Business Incubator is we are building your foundational business strategy.” “Our desire for your success is as great as the desire for our own success.” “I have gained confidence that I have something of value to offer the marketplace.” Dr. Katica Krajinovic “I was kind of stalling at the same numbers…finally, I got over the hurdle…I doubled my clientele, and increased my revenue.” Monica Delius “I think that's the biggest thing, the switch in my mindset as far as what I have to offer and valuing that as it should be valued…as a result, I'm making just about 3X as much every time I sign a client as I would have before I started working with you guys.” Jocelyn BoothbyLet's Connect! How can you introduce dogs to each other? In today's podcast episode, we are diving into safely introducing dogs and the considerations you can have in mind as you work toward introducing a new dog into your home or dogs that may be spending time together. How can your emotions and behaviour have an impactWhat can you do if you feel you aren't confident in orchestrating the introductionIdentifying whether your dog is ready or prepared for an introductionSetting the scene to maintain safety and allow freedom of communicationMaking sure you have considered the set up and the process of preparing them for the interaction gradually. We provide examples (including with other animals!). There are so many situations where knowing the best approach is essential to the success of the introduction. There is no rush and be sure to have safe guards in place that ensure the introduction happens in the way you want it to vs. a spontaneous interaction that occurs due to a failure of set up, such as a barrier breakdown, etc. Introducing your new puppy to an adult or senior dog, into a multi-animal and multi-dog household, as well as introducing a new rescue or rehome into your home can go smoothly when you're able to set the energy, set the expectations, and minimise the opportunity for poor decisions. Every situation will flex dependent on the variables and some dogs will require much slower introductions than others. The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

Living with Purpose Means Your Goals are Unique to You Often times we look around and think, "oh, I should do what this woman is doing" or "I need to do these things too".  We end up setting our goals based on everyone else's metrics of success instead of defining what success looks like to us and leaning into our own unique gifts and talents and letting those be the guide. We find joy and satisfaction when we are aligned with our goals. Going from A to Z. The B to Y is so important. The endpoint can seem so daunting so we need to look at what's in between, the B to Y, to reach the goals. Where we are today, and where we want to go, there is a huge chasm. If we put one foot in front of the other every day, we'll get there so much faster than trying to rush through without being aligned. The Purpose Equation - For Finding and Living with Purpose Robyn shared her purpose equation, Values + Visions + Passions = Purpose. We must be aligned with our values or we will become frustrated. This ties in with Tayna's North Star concept that she shared in "The Joy of Missing Out", your values, visions, and mission are your guiding light and principal. This helps determine your soulmate clients. This is also important with how you run your team and set your boundaries. How to Discover Your Passions If you are feeling lost in the day-to-day of motherhood and are struggling to identify your passions, travel back in time. Do reflection work and discover what your passions were before you began the journey of motherhood and expectations. Dive into who you were when you were a kid. What were the activities you looked forward to? Tayna gave the example of playing softball. Maybe you won't play softball as an adult, but what did you like about softball. Was it being outdoors, the team environment, the athleticism, moving your body? Ask yourself why and you'll start to see bread crumbs for things you are passionate about. Another exercise to discover your passions is diving into what you wanted to be when you grew up. Remember when there were no constraints on you. Why did you want to be that? What was it about being that that made you excited? PIE We are all multi-passionate. Every person on the planet has more than one thing they love. It's important to narrow down first, niche down first, then add on and expand. You can't be Amazon straight out of the gate. When we do this, we wear ourselves out. Choose to focus. The cost of greatness is commitment. Commit to doing fewer things so that we can really do them well and then expand. Powers What are your powers? Impact What impact does it make? Excitement What is your excitement level? Being good at something doesn't mean you should be doing it. About Tayna Dalton Tayna is the author of “The Joy of Missing Out” and “On Purpose“. Have you ever written something that you wished you could self-publish? What about your child, niece or nephew? We are all born creative as per Picasso. However, staying creative is the tough part. This week’s guest once worked with me at Ogilvy & Mather in NYC. Amy provides an amazing perspective on creativity. She worked on both the agency and client sides as she explored her own creativity. Listen to how Amy has followed her curiosities when it came to her creativity, decisions on where to live in the world, and how to lead her entrepreneurial journey.   About Amy   Amy Wong is a proud Canadian, the mother of two rambunctious young daughters, and someone who has turned their love of marketing and entrepreneurship into a 20-year career. This passion has taken her from Toronto to New York to Beijing to Hong Kong. After graduating from the Ivey School of Business in Canada, Amy moved to the Big Apple to break into the advertising industry, an area of study that fascinated her at school. Luckily, a small Asian American agency gave Amy an opportunity to work as an Account Executive where she covered brands such as Citibank and Hennessy. Amy moved to Ogilvy one year later, where she met some of the most brilliant minds in the industry and worked on some of the most high-profile campaigns at the agency, including the launch of IBM Watson on Jeopardy! During those years in New York, Amy became curious with Asia, a place that was experiencing tremendous growth. She convinced my husband to move across the ocean where they spent half a year learning Mandarin at the Beijing Language and Cultural University before moving to Hong Kong. Amy landed a marketing role at Lenovo where she created and launched campaigns for their portfolio of products that ranged from ThinkPad and Yoga Laptops to MOTO smartphones to Star Wars: Jedi Challenges AR devices. Recently, Amy decided to fulfill her lifelong dream of starting a business. Her company is called Dreamwriters, a self-publishing platform for young creative writers and artists. It’s a place where kids of any age (or kids at heart) can write and publish beautiful books of their stories. Amy’s hope is that the platform becomes a foundation for lifelong creative fulfillment.   Please share this episode with three parents who wish to cultivate their child’s wonder and reignite their own. If you want to learn how easy it can be to self-publish writing or works of art then tune in! Amy’s platform is a great option!   Highlights  Learning Methods: Rote learning methods, pressures we place on our kids, and other ways our creative ambitions dwindle. Generations: Millennials vs. Gen X-ers; is there ever a final answer on what to be? Knighthood: We spoke about giving yourself permission to be creative. Creativity: Any nuances between working in an agency as a “suit” vs. being the client. Myth-busting: Outsourcing creativity? Is this what happens when hiring agencies? Types of creativity: Must it add value to society or can it harm society? Dreamwriters: A new business venture Amy is leading. What is it exactly? Education in Asia: Learning for a test vs. inspiring creativity. Story: How Amy followed her curiosities from career interests to living in a new country. Impact: What’s behind the power of a story? Mission: Creating a safe space for kid’s creativity. Why safety matters? Business Plan: What’s next for Dreamwriters? Expression: What does it take to express yourself fully? Entrepreneurship: How does it feel to see your own logo for the first time? Corporate vs. Start-up: Wearing many hats. What’s the difference? Best Practices: The art of writing creative briefs. From what YOU say, how YOU act, YOUR attitudes and YOUR behaviours… You will see in todays message, how that also has a negative impact on you - on your sense of identity and your definition of yourself.Who you are - your identity and sense of self - is affected by how you treat other people just as much as by how other people treat you.

Ever wanted to make a difference yet you were unsure about how to begin or what it would require? Well, this week’s guest lays out your first step and he talks about how not looking for approval is key to making an impact in any space. Muyambi Muyambi is the Founder of Cycle Connect, a non-profit that began as a lease-to-own bicycle organization that saw how bicycles were used to create access to critical resources, increase income, and improve rural livelihoods. An organization that now also applies the same model to more productive assets to give its clients more opportunities to invest in their futures.   Muyambi is a native of Uganda and holds a dual degree in Civil Engineering (B.S.E.) and Economics (B.A.) from Bucknell University and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Muyambi successfully secured seed funding for Cycle Connect from Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) and presented the organization on stage at CGI in 2008.  He did this during his college years! Makes me think what the heck was I doing during my college years? Muyambi is such a practical and inspiring change maker and he continues to share his passion for development on numerous stages. And most recently, Muyambi wrote a children’s book entitled, The Magical Wooden Bicycle; this story is a somewhat of his memoir.  Muyambi wrote of his days as a child in Uganda when having a bicycle would have meant the world to him and actually saved his life during one fateful day when he was diagnosed with malaria and needed to be ridden to the nearest hospital.   In this episode, Muyambi shares stories about his persistence despite challenges, where his sense of urgency comes from, and how he sold his vision of Cycle Connect to his college peers who had a very different perspective of what having a bicycle meant. Enjoy our conversation, this is perfect for anyone who wants to make an impact. Please leave a review in iTunes if you get value out of this episode and most importantly share it with your favorite aspiring change makers.   Highlights:   Name The story behind Muyambi’s first and same last name. Stories Muyambi shares his unplanned cycling adventure across the US. Gutsy Muyambi talks about how he rarely needs approval for anything from anyone. Character Where did Muyambi’s work ethic come from? Leveraging Others Muyambi inspired help from his peers who were predominantly American to build a non-profit for farmers in Uganda because of his “make it happen” character. Alone vs. Team On starting a journey alone vs. with help. Challenges A neighbor with a bicycle saved Muyambi’s life as a child with malaria in Uganda. Realities Buying a bicycle in rural Uganda is often not an easy decision vs. for those in the middle class in the U.S. Recognition Getting a grant from the Clinton Global Initiative and how selling a vision is possible. Impact What happened after Cycle Connect earned that grant? Impact is now at 30K people! Urgency Why having a deep-seated sense of urgency matters?; each second counts Children’s Book Self-publishing a children’s book that is semi-autobiographical Meaning At Work How even in a day job you can make an impact on the social challenges you’d like to solve. Case Study How has Cycle Connect made a deep impact? The story of one farmer who is out of the cycle of poverty. Support We are a part of a global economy and everyone doesn’t need to have first-hand experiences with constraints to be able to help and feel the urgency of global challenges. How To Start A Non-Profit or Support A Cause? Start doing whatever it is that is on your heart! Start yesterday. Tip: maybe ask for Christmas donations rather than gifts this season?   Quotes:   “I’m always willing to give advice because sometimes ignorance is bliss. Just begin with what’s in your heart. Don’t stand still, whatever it is that’s what in your heart, start doing.” - Muyambi   “Just be ready to walk alone. You know, if that's what it takes to make it happen, you do it until someone joins you.” - Muyambi   “Bad experiences in life can teach you a lot of things and so if I have the opportunity to help I value it, and try to make it better for people.” - Muyambi   Learn about Cycle Connect Buy the book The Magical Wooden Bicycle Follow Kwezi’s Journey on Instagram Leesa McGregor An Alphabet For Humanity David Roberts Iggy Peck Series   Did you enjoy the conversation? Ever wish you could be a fly on the wall? Inside Influence
The Secrets To Mastering Attention

Inside Influence

Greetings everyone, my name is Julie Masters and welcome to another episode of Inside Influence. In which I delve into the minds of some of the world’s most fascinating influencers – or experts in influence - to get to the bottom of what it really takes to own your voice - and then amplify it to drive an industry, a conversation, a movement or a nation. In this episode, we journey from mastery to magic decoding the magician's secrets with the incredible Vinh Giang. While it’s fair to say I research all of my guests in great detail, I literally had to pull myself away from the computer as I could have easily lost days in total awe of Vinh's genius. Vinh has a gift for translating the magician's code in a business context. He demystifies the illusions of magic and has created seriously compelling content empowering audiences with the tools to navigate technicality vs performance and craft vs charisma. He is fascinated by the human psychology behind the tricks, the nature of perception, and the art of illusion. He uses these tools as metaphors to unlock the audience's mind to an array of new possibilities. Vinh explores concepts such as timing, practice, skills, connection and of course the influence of the magician over the audience. His ultimate goal whether it is in business or life is to see the possible in the impossible. To feel the magic in the metaphors and to find the solutions that set success in motion. As a speaker, Vinh has partnered with many organisations including globally recognized names such as HSBC, Microsoft, and Gartner. As an innovator, Vinh founded the first online training platform to teach magic, and as a result, was honored to be awarded South Australia Young Entrepreneur. As an awarded magician, he has created magic for audiences all over the world. Growing up in a refugee family Vinh always valued hard work as the road to success, and this attitude is evident in his mission to educate others on the mastery behind the magic and the process behind the perception. During the interview, I was again in sheer awe of Vinhs ability to communicate the impossible to make it possible and could have easily lost hours in conversation. To summarise, we covered off some of the following key points in our discussion... The power of following your passionThe balance between technical skill and performanceThe unwritten agreement to be a master of illusion in magicUnderstanding our vehicle for influenceThe body and voice as our most powerful instrumentHow we hold, keep and control attentionThe power of rate, pitch, and pause when presentingThe sight, sound and synch audit when reviewing our presentationsUnderstanding the voice as the tool to impactWhat is mastery and how is it achievedThe power of perspective in challenging whats possibleWhy magic lives in the unknownWhy talent has nothing to do with successWhy great teachers craft the experience Get ready to soak up tips, tools, and insights from a true master of communication, influence, and performance. Vinh is on a mission to assist others to 'never die with the music still inside', and this podcast is a guide that will allow you to begin to understand your song, your rhythm, and what it takes to master that melody and ultimately create magic in the lives of those with whom you influence.
