Break 1: KIA MOG STORY 1: Man accused of killing pregnant ex-girlfriend released on bond Jesus Monroy, a 20-year-old Snellville man, was released on $56,000 bond after being charged with the murder of his pregnant 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, Mia Campos, and her unborn child. Superior Court Judge Karen Beyers set the bond, which led to Monroy's release early Thursday. He faces charges including malice murder, feticide, and aggravated assault related to Campos' death on July 14. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson expressed disappointment with the bond decision, citing the severity of the crime and the loss of both mother and child. Monroy's defense argued for bond, citing his lack of prior convictions and offering conditions like house arrest and GPS monitoring. STORY 2: Gwinnett Sheriff Makes 47 Arrests in Surenos Gang Investigation The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office announced 47 arrests connected to the Surenos gang after a nine-month investigation. The probe, which involved surveillance, undercover operations, and collaboration with various agencies, revealed the gang's ties to Mexican drug cartels and their activities in firearm and narcotics trafficking. Authorities seized over $300,000 in cash, 14 firearms, nearly 200 kilos of methamphetamine, 37 kilos of cocaine, and 300 fentanyl pills. Charges include narcotics trafficking, illegal firearm possession, and racketeering. The investigation involved numerous partner agencies and underscores the ongoing effort to combat violent drug trafficking in the community. STORY 3: Lawrenceville Teen Earns Girl Scout Gold Award By Helping Pediatric Patients Sarah Gruber, a Lawrenceville Girl Scout, used her Girl Scout Gold Award project to aid hospitalized children by donating 17 handmade IV lily pads to Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children's Hospital in Memphis. These lily pads, which she designed and crafted over 500 hours, help pediatric patients move more easily with their IVs. Gruber also created 525 coloring kits for the children. Her project not only supports the hospital but also teaches other teens to replicate the effort in their communities. The Gold Award honors Scouts who create impactful, sustainable projects, and Gruber's work will enhance the hospital experience for young patients. Officially accepting the Democratic Party's nomination for the U.S. Presidency, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a near-40 minute speech, weaving in autobiographical anecdotes and details and laying out a policy vision in a rather neatly-stitched speech. I watched, along with Georgia WIN List members and guests and Manuel's Tavern and got feedback from several women - some of them candidates as well - worthy of sharing while reviewing Harris' remarks. I also wanted to share a conversation I had with Audrey Shoemaker with Fulton County's Animal Shelter to spotlight the "Clear the Shelters' fee-free animal adoption period going through September 10th at Fulton & Dekalb's shelters and with Lifeline Animal Project. Even if you can't adopt, there are many ways you can still help.

A man was hospitalized Sunday night after crashing into a tree off Cobb Parkway in Marietta, police announced. According to the Cobb County Police Department, the man, who has not been identified, was driving a white Nissan Altima north on Cobb Parkway near its intersection with Progressive Way. The car left the roadway and crashed into a tree. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and seriously injured, police said. After being extricated from the car he was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police. A Kennesaw woman was killed Saturday after being hit by a car as she was walking a dog, the Cobb County Police Department announced. Veronica Miller was struck by a car and killed around 9 a.m. Saturday, police said. According to police, Miller was walking the dog and crossing Wooten Lake Road at its intersection with Glenlake Parkway when she was struck. The dog was not injured. Miller was crossing from the north side to the south side of Wooten Lake Road, and was struck by a blue 1999 BMW 328i, according to police. The driver, a 23-year-old Kennesaw man, was not injured. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police. There was no way around it. A Sierra Canyon boys team known for its flash, for its highlights, for the celebrity that follows, was going to have to get gritty Saturday night, assistant coach Chris Howe said. The Trailblazers were taking on nationally ranked Wheeler, a team that Howe said, simply had "dudes." Two of those dudes, in fact, were playing at their future stomping grounds — seniors Isaiah Collier and Arrington Page, a pair of Southern California signees. But after Sierra Canyon fell behind by double digits early, its move-on-a-string defense overwhelmed the prized recruits and Wheeler in a 66-55 win — perhaps the Trailblazers' best of the season. The team down by eight at halftime, Sierra Canyon's staff "challenged" senior Ashton Hardaway, coach Andre Chevalier said after the game. And Hardaway — son of former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway and a Memphis commit — responded with perhaps his best all-around half as a Trailblazer, getting aggressive on the glass and banging down low with Page. It was his range, though, that propelled him to 18 points and a pair of massive third-quarter threes to pull Sierra Canyon back into the game, Hardaway barking at any Wheeler defender within earshot while backpedaling down the floor. And after a quiet first half, Bronny James continued to show an improved sense of the moment in his senior year, detonating for 17 fourth-quarter points. Collier finished with 17 points but was held by James, Isaiah Elohim and a horde of Trailblazers wing defenders to five-for-16 shooting. Page, who Chevalier called "the most skilled player that we've played all year long," finished with just eight points and seven rebounds. Before all dogs go to heaven, many dogs go to shelters. At an adoption event held by LifeLine Animal Project and Best Friends in Atlanta, a number of dogs — and one cat — were adopted out of the shelter and foster system to become family pets. The dogs were gathered — though socially distanced — on leashes outside the office of Best Friends in Atlanta off of South Cobb Drive near Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Most of them were taken to the event by their foster owners. An outbreak of canine flu in Fulton and DeKalb counties is part of the reason why the shelter system in the metro Atlanta is stressed. According to Vickers, the LifeLine shelters are diverting all new intakes to foster homes instead of shelters to prevent them from potentially coming into contact with contagious shelter dogs. Most dogs recover from canine influenza within two to three weeks, according to the CDC, though the virus sometimes leads to more severe illness. LifeLine is still adopting out dogs that are testing positive for canine flu to people who don't have other dogs. Foster families without other dogs can also help keep infected dogs isolated from shelters. Fostering for any amount of time, even over a single weekend, can help dogs find permanent homes because it provides more information to potential adopters about how a dog behaves in a home environment. Both organizations vaccinate, microchip and either spay or neuter their animals before they are adopted out. For more, visit lifelineanimal.org and bestfriends.org/atlanta. Students and teachers alike lined the streets Friday afternoon to give a warm welcome to Marietta High's boys and girls cross country teams, who swept the state championships last year. 2022 was the second time in three years Marietta claimed both Class AAAAAAA titles, doing so in 2020 as well. Buses carrying the champions processed through west Marietta, ending at the high school. Declared one Burruss Elementary School student as the parade neared, "This is one of the best days of school ever." Students and parents held up signs supporting their favorite runners. People and businesses are responding to a break-in at a local eatery with donations and gifts. Two days before Christmas, thieves smashed the front door of Pie Bar Marietta near Marietta Square around 5 a.m. and left with a cash drawer and safe from the bakery. Owner Lauren Bolden discovered the break-in when she arrived at the store that morning. Pie Bar's locations in Marietta and Woodstock have seen a response from the community in the weeks since the break-in. Woodstock City Church bought tacos for the staff's lunch, Bolden said, while Woodstock Mayor Michael Caldwell asked people to donate money to the business on his Facebook page. Since the break-in, Pie Bar Marietta added some security measures, and it has operated without accepting cash. Bolden said the business is considering going cashless at the Woodstock location, too. Bolden wasn't sure whether the business had recouped the cost of the stolen money and the door replacement yet, but she said the support helped the business get through a difficult day. On December 23, the day of the robbery, several hundred customers were supposed to pick up their Christmas orders from Pie Bar Marietta. Those pies had to moved to the original store, Bolden said, and all the associated customers had to be told their pies were now in Woodstock. Vivan Gamel of Acworth, the general manager for both locations, woke up to several missed calls from Bolden that morning and went into work early to help. Gamel, who works mostly at the Marietta Pie Bar, said she thinks the majority of people who have come in lately have heard about the crime, and are coming in to make sure everyone is okay and support the business. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. LifeLine Animal Project is inviting metro Atlantans to “adopt a lifetime of love” during the Black Friday Mega Adoption Weekend from Friday, Nov. 25 to Monday, Nov. 28. LifeLine is offering free adoptions on all pets at their three area shelters. Additionally, every pet will be spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, a $250 value, at no additional charge. More than 1,400 dogs and cats from DeKalb and Fulton County Animal Services and the LifeLine Community Animal Center will be available for a free adoption. Staff and volunteers are waiting to help find adopters a perfect match. Lifeline's shelters are at 3180 Presidential Drive in Atlanta, 860 Marietta Blvd. NW in Atlanta and 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road in Chamblee. Mayor Andre Dickens and the city of Atlanta have launched a new $3.5 million loan program to support local small businesses by building equity. Through the Atlanta Commercial Down Payment Assistance Loan Program, Atlanta small businesses are eligible to apply for a direct loan of up to 20% of commercial property costs up to $200,000 to acquire commercial property. The CDPA program is the third initiative that United Way of Greater Atlanta and Invest Atlanta have rolled out as a part of the Atlanta Open for Business Fund, supported by Wells Fargo. The fund is made possible by a $20 million donation from Wells Fargo to help the owners of Atlanta small businesses own more of their businesses' assets — including property and equipment — and fund physical upgrades to their facilities. Loan recipients must be an existing small business with a city of Atlanta business license that is interested in acquiring commercial real estate in the city of Atlanta with emphasis in low-income census tracts, Federal Opportunity Zone areas, disadvantaged neighborhoods, or a New Markets Tax Credit approved area neighborhood. Businesses must also demonstrate growth potential in their industry. #Buckhead #Atlanta #NorthFulton #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - - The Northside Neighbor Podcast is local news for Roswell, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, and the entire Northside. GUEST: Rebecca Guinn is CEO of LifeLine Animal Project, which manages Atlanta's Fulton and DeKalb County animal shelters and which opened a new shelter, adoption center and clinic in 2019. LifeLine's community outreach effort provides free vaccines, spay/neuter and other assistance to thousands of pets belonging to underserved Atlantans. LifeLine's community cat program, the first and largest organized trap-neuter-return assistance program in Atlanta, has sterilized and vaccinated more than 40,000 community cats; and the LifeLine Spay & Neuter Clinics comprise the largest spay/neuter provider in Georgia, having performed more than 140,000 surgeries to date. Rebecca is active in the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia and is a member of Best Friends Animal Society's No-Kill 2025 National Steering Committee. MAIN QUESTION: How can animal welfare leaders and managers keep an eye on the big picture while staying on top of day-to-day fires? TAKEAWAYS: The leader's job is to keep the focus on the mission and to get others involved in it. Build a team of likeminded people, look for each person's superpower and tap into it. Seek out people with skills that complement others on the team. We owe our best to the animals every time. Set that standard for yourself. Find the gaps in your community, and figure out what's needed to close those gaps. Regularly ask yourself if you're solving the right problems and what you are trying to make better. Perform gap analyses; over time, you'll get better at solving for the right problems. Embrace both ends of the leash. Georgia’s efforts to save pets have come a long way in the last few years. The 2019 lifesaving progress dataset showed that statewide, Georgia increased lifesaving by more than 30-percent over the previous year. Metro Atlanta is a sprawling area consisting of 29 counties and two of them, Fulton and Dekalb, have undergone a radical transformation over the last 7 years. Rebecca Guinn founded Lifeline Animal Project in 2003. The organization has saved thousands of animals through its shelter and fixed more than 125,000 pets of owners at low or no cost. In 2013, Lifeline Animal Project took on the Herculean task of running the sheltering operations in both Fulton and Dekalb Counties - the two counties that comprise the City of Atlanta. Taking on both of those contracts within 6-months presented many obstacles (and a lot of people thought she was crazy!). But Rebecca and the entire Lifeline Animal Project team's drive to take Atlanta to No-Kill has paid off, making Atlanta a model for the entire nation.
