Everything's fine. The simple act of scrolling through cute animal videos can lift someone's mood, but imagine pairing that joy with meaningful action. Fureelz, a new social media app founded by Ashley Quincey, connects users to animal welfare organizations while creating a safe and uplifting space for animal lovers.Ashley shared the inspiration behind Fureelz, explaining that her vision stemmed from frustration with traditional social media. “Every time I would get off of my app, scrolling through social media, which used to be a place where I would go disconnect, have fun, I started to notice that I was getting anxious… And I just felt the reality is, every day, people are already connecting about animals because it's like it is a great unifier.”The platform goes beyond showcasing adorable pets. It features partnerships with well-known organizations like Best Friends Animal Society and PetSmart Charities, giving users a direct way to support animal causes. Through a feature called “Furrealsgiving,” users can donate directly to these organizations, with 100% of the funds reaching the charities. As Ashley described it, “You're able to give joy and get joy. And to add that extra layer… animal sanctuaries are actually fighting to get visibility, fighting to get that funding. And this is really that ability where you're able to enjoy your community and discover those different animal sanctuaries.”Fureelz is also raising money through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign. The app plans to leverage new revenue models, including in-app purchases, brand sponsorships, and gamification. With plans for exponential growth, Ashley pointed out the massive market opportunity, estimating the “critter economy” is worth $644 billion globally by 2030.Fureelz isn't just a tech platform; it's a movement. Ashley's passion for animals is evident, and her mission is to create a joyful, impactful community while ensuring animal welfare organizations thrive. This episode demonstrates that social media can be a force for good. With Fureelz, Ashley isn't just building a business; she's uniting people over a shared love for animals while changing lives—both human and animal—for the better.tl;dr:Fureelz, founded by Ashley Quincey, is a social media platform dedicated to animal lovers. The app connects users with animal charities like PetSmart Charities to enable direct donations.Fureelz is raising money through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Andes Capital.Relentless optimism, Ashley's superpower, has driven her entrepreneurial journey through challenges.Ashley advises cultivating gratitude and perspective to develop and strengthen an optimistic mindset. How to Develop Relentless Optimism As a SuperpowerAshley's superpower is her “relentless optimism,” which she describes as the ability to stay hopeful and positive even in challenging situations. “No matter what is going on, there's that cartoon where the world's burning in the background, and there's that little dog and his coffee, and he's like, ‘I'm fine. Everything's fine.' I think that's pretty much me,” she explained. Ashley sees this mindset as a critical trait for entrepreneurs to overcome obstacles and maintain focus on their goals.Ashley shared how her optimism was tested while building Fureelz. With limited resources, no salary, and a small team working for equity instead of regular pay, she faced monumental challenges. Yet, her unwavering belief in Fureelz as a mission-driven platform kept her determined. “I find that at five o'clock in the morning, when it's quiet, I can take a moment to think, and ultimately, the universe presents solutions,” she noted. This proactive yet hopeful approach helped her gather the right team and secure resources to make her vision a reality.Tips for Developing Optimism as a Personal Strength:Practice Gratitude Daily: Write down one thing you're grateful for every day.Shift Your Perspective: Focus on the blessings you have, such as shelter, friends, or opportunities.Embrace Change with Openness: Treat challenges as opportunities for personal and professional growth.Find Quiet Reflection Time: Early mornings can provide a clear headspace for creative problem-solving.Adopt Healthy Habits: Incorporate practices like exercise or meditation to stay balanced and focused.By following Ashley's example and advice, you can make relentless optimism a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileAshley Quincey (she/her):CEO & Founder, FureelzAbout Fureelz: Fureelz is a social platform built for animals and the people who love them, designed to create a more joyful and positive online experience. This week we welcome musician, songwriter, producer, and engineer Matt McJunkins, who's worked as a recording and touring bassist with A Perfect Circle, Eagles of Death Metal, Puscifer, and fronts his own collective project The Beta Machine. Matt introduces us to his one year old rescue Ziggy Pawdust who's a Black Lab, German Shepherd, German Pointer mix and his partner's rescue Mabel, a 10(ish) year old Staffordshire Terrier. After we get to know his pups Matt helps us confirm or dispel some popular dog cliches, tells us which of his musical friends has the best dog energy and much more in another great dog-centric conversation.Matt elected to give his shout outs to Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles who work collaboratively with animal rescue groups, city shelters and passionate individuals who are all dedicated to saving the lives of cats and dogs in Los Angeles shelters. You can be part of that work too when you adopt, foster, volunteer or advocate. THE G.Y.M. — PILOT, ACTS TWO AND THREE By Dani HanksPick up where Act One left off. Valerie still cannot get her commercial. The film crew is still in her face. The Solstice gym across the street is still winning. And things are about to get considerably worse.Bryan is teaching group fitness despite not knowing what "happy baby" is, and every senior in the building keeps asking when Reggie is coming back. Kayla is supposed to be training her client. Her client is currently turning purple under a barbell. The cameraman looks weirdly familiar to her and she cannot place it. Chris is somewhere in the locker room going through a smoothie situation he did not ask for. Wade the IT guy is crawling through a server closet stuffed with the unpaid invoices Valerie has been hiding in her clipboard. And Valerie, our hero, has just told the cute IT guy that her anaconda doesn't want his real estate funds. It's fine. Everything is fine.By the time we get to the pool, Alexa is jumping off a diving board she has no business being on, Bryan is leading a secret back room of seniors through a yoga pose he learned thirty seconds ago, Wade is sitting next to a soaking wet Valerie holding the worst envelopes she's ever seen in her life, and the truth about who's been filming all day is about to drop in the middle of the room like a brick through a window.Underneath the chaos, this is what the show is actually about: a woman trying to save the only place she ever felt at home, with a crew of misfits who have nowhere else to go either. Norman Lear would recognize this gym. So would anybody who's ever worked at one.Meanwhile, across the street, in a chrome office at the new Solstice, a Southern silver fox in a tall cowboy hat is watching the whole thing through binoculars. He is having the time of his life. He is not done with The G.Y.M. Not even close.Recorded live at Podcast Movement at SXSW in front of a packed house of our peers, and you can hear it in the room. THE G.Y.M. — PILOT, ACT ONE By Dani HanksWelcome to the run-down fitness shithole at the end of the strip mall. Two buildings left standing, a tech repair shop and The G.Y.M., and across the street a brand new chrome-and-barbell luxury chain called Solstice is having its grand opening on the same day Valerie is trying to film her grand re-opening commercial.Valerie inherited her childhood sanctuary the hard way. The previous owner got hauled off in handcuffs as "The Flamingo King," the FBI took the penguins, and she sank her life savings into keeping the bulldozers off the lot. Now the bike handlebars are snapping mid-shoot, the wifi is down, the POS is down, the smoothie blender is wifi-controlled (a mistake), and a real estate vulture in pinstripes will not stop circling the parking lot. Her ragtag crew, an Insta-thirsty trainer, a Finnish golden retriever on a visa, a chaos-gremlin receptionist who cannot swim, a buttoned-up IT guy from next door, a smoothie-bar veteran who misses the cocaine era, and a crystal-worshipping yogi with prison connections, is the only thing standing between Valerie and the wrecking ball. It's a found-family workplace comedy in the bloodline of Cheers, Superstore, and The Bear, but make it the gym. HBO sitcom material with prime-network legs. Dani Hanks' pilot won the 2024 Austin Film Festival Josephson Entertainment Fellowship, the year-long development deal AFF hands to the one teleplay it bets the most on, and ISA named Dani one of the Top 25 Screenwriters to Watch in 2025.We recorded this live at Podcast Movement at SXSW in front of a packed house of our peers, and you can hear it in the room. The energy, the laughs landing in real time, the cast riding the wave together. Video version available on YouTube and across our channels. Lean in with that, then let Act One take you the rest of the way.CASTHeather Foster - Narrator Allison Dunbar - Valerie Yasmine Al-Bustami - Kayla and Spin Client Kensington Tallman - Alexa and White Trash Spin Diva Shaan Sharma - Wade, Bored EMT, and Johnny Joe Nemmers - Gary Hughes, Cocky Newscaster, Television, and Gruff Driver Jacob A. What if the challenges we're facing in animal welfare today aren't new at all?In this episode of Keep it Humane, we sit down with Audrey Lodato—Senior Director of Regional Programs at Best Friends Animal Society and creator of the animal welfare history blog Barking at the Knot—to uncover how the past continues to shape the present. From the early 1800s “War Against Dogs” to the fear-driven policies surrounding rabies and hydrophobia, Audrey walks us through how societal pressures, public health concerns, and even misinformation helped build the foundation of modern animal control. We explore how practices like intake-driven systems and strict impound policies didn't just appear—they evolved from a very different time. But this isn't just a history lesson. We connect those origins to today's biggest challenges: rising intake, public accountability, humane education gaps, and the ongoing push for transparency in shelter operations. The conversation digs into what needs to change—and what we may still be getting wrong. We also look ahead, exploring how technology and AI could reshape sheltering by improving decision-making, reducing length of stay, and helping more animals find positive outcomes.Plus, a quick look at what's coming next with Best Friends' national conference in Utah—and a live AI demo that might just change how you think about shelter operations. If you've ever wondered why we do things the way we do in animal welfare… this episode connects the dots.
In this episode, we speak with Julie Castle—Chief Executive Officer of Best Friends Animal Society and a leading voice behind the national no-kill movement—about her remarkable journey from aspiring lawyer to one of the most influential leaders in animal welfare. Julie shares how a single visit to a sanctuary in Utah changed the course of her life, setting her on a path that would take her from cleaning kennels and answering phones to building one of the largest and most effective animal welfare networks in the country—and helping to drive a nationwide movement to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters.
Kevin Nealon–the veteran comedian, longtime animal advocate, former “Saturday Night Live” star (amidst a long list of TV and film credits), and host of the YouTube series, “Hiking with Kevin”—explains why his animal advocacy and championing of certain animal welfare organizations has receded in recent years. On May 20, 2016, ICU nurse Amber Kornhorst set out on a solo late-afternoon hike near Cane Beds, Arizona, and climbed a deceptively "sticky" sandstone wall she couldn't safely descend. With no cell service and no way out, she fell about 100 feet into a narrow rock "dungeon," suffering three spinal fractures, a crushed pelvis, head and facial injuries, severe dehydration, and hypothermia — and typed goodbye messages to her family on her phone. Refusing to give up, she crawled and climbed to a more visible ledge and blew her whistle three blasts every half hour until search-and-rescue teams and a helicopter located her nearly 24 hours later, executing a technical rope raise and hover-load evacuation to a Utah hospital. Her story drives home survival essentials: always tell someone your plan, never hike alone, start early, carry extra water and a whistle, consider a satellite communicator, and never climb anything you can't safely descend. 00:46 Show Intro And Setup 01:40 Amber Hits The Trail 03:02 Climbing The Sandstone Wave 04:10 No Way Down Desert Trap 05:32 The Hundred Foot Fall 06:20 Shock And Goodbye Texts 08:27 Painful Climb And Whistle 11:03 Search Effort Mobilizes 12:41 Helicopter Spots Her 14:16 Technical Rope Rescue 16:10 Hover Pickup Extraction 17:02 Helicopter Evacuation 17:43 Hospital Recovery Journey 19:06 Why She Survived 19:43 Whistle and Visibility 21:55 Search Mobilized Fast 22:50 Wilderness Safety Takeaways 25:03 Desert Hiking Mistakes 27:08 Survival Mindset Lessons 29:47 Final Wrap and Credits Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ Primary/First-Person Account Kohnhorst, Amber. Best Friends Animal Society says if 300 more dogs and cats are adopted this year in Massachusetts, it'll become what the organization refers to as a "no kill" state. That means at least 90% of shelter animals get adopted.
We’ve been talking about little Punch — the anxious monkey in Japan who found comfort in his favorite stuffed companion. He stole the hearts of the Internet when he was abandoned by his mother and was not fully accepted by the other monkeys... and he would run to this stuffed orangutan for comfort. This opened up the conversation about pet anxiety in general. Patrick Theobald, Community Program Manager at Best Friends Animal Society in Utah, joins the show to discuss.
About 25% of Americans can't get a credit card from a major bank, and more than half are one or two missed paychecks from a credit crisis. Yet most financial institutions still design their products for prime borrowers and pretend the rest of the market doesn't exist. In this episode of Banking Transformed, I sit down with Steve Min, Chief Credit Officer at Credit One Bank, who has built a business around the customers most banks would rather turn away. We talk about why two-thirds of consumers don't understand the basics of how their credit score is calculated, why the stigma around imperfect credit keeps people from getting help, and what it actually takes to rebuild a credit profileSteve explains how Credit One approaches risk differently, why its Credit Wreckers program teaches people what not to do with their credit, and how building financial momentum can help borrowers qualify for better products over time. If your institution claims to serve the underserved, this conversation will challenge whether you're actually doing it.Resources:CreditWreckers.comForWhatsAhead.comThis episode of Banking Transformed is sponsored by Credit One Bank Credit One Bank is a financial services company and one of the fastest-growing credit card issuers in the U.S. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Las Vegas, Credit One Bank offers a full spectrum of credit card products including cash back and points-based cards as well as high-yield certificate of deposit and savings accounts. What does it look like to use data not just to report, but to change outcomes at a national scale? In this episode of the Common Good Data Podcast, Roger and I are joined by Michelle Dunivan, Senior Director of Insights and Analytics at Best Friends Animal Society. Michelle shares how Best Friends uses data, partnerships, and trust-building to advance its bold mission of making the entire United States a no-kill nation. We talk about the realities of animal welfare as an under-resourced social sector, the lack of standardized data across communities, and how Best Friends has built one of the most comprehensive animal welfare data systems in the country. Michelle explains how data can help shift policy, guide local practice, and “myth-bust” the idea that things are only getting worse, even in challenging times. This conversation is also about something bigger than animal welfare. It's about how nonprofits can use data ethically, transparently, and collaboratively to improve outcomes, build trust, and create collective impact across an entire field. In this episode, we discuss:- Why animal welfare data is uniquely challenging and deeply local- How Best Friends collects and uses data across thousands of shelters- The role of trust, transparency, and relationships in data sharing- How data can support continuous improvement - What nonprofits in any sector can learn from this approachIf you're interested in evaluation, data strategy, collective impact, or using information to drive real change, this episode offers powerful lessons that extend far beyond animal welfare.

Dr. Rob Harter welcomes Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, to the Nonprofit Leadership Podcast. In this inspiring episode, Julie shares her remarkable journey—from employee #17 with an $800,000 annual budget to leading a thriving $180 million organization. She highlights how steadfast commitment to brand, high-touch donor relationships, positive storytelling, and unwavering focus on mission fueled exponential growth and deep community connection. Julie dives into the power of personal touches—thank‑you phone calls and handwritten notes, even today—and how authenticity and consistency, paired with a clear, optimistic brand narrative, have built a movement. She also discusses the importance of hiring for cultural fit, nurturing internal talent, and staying laser‑focused on a singular mission. Key Topics Include: The transformative impact of high‑touch, personal donor interactions—calling and thanking every donor, no matter the gift size. Why positive, uplifting storytelling resonates more than negative appeals and how Best Friends built its brand around hope and joy. The strategic value of crafting your own branded content (like an in‑house magazine), vs. outsourcing. How best practices and generous sharing of knowledge built Best Friends into a national, mission‑driven leader. Hiring for chemistry and cultural alignment over pedigree, and investing in internal growth. Staying mission‑centric—choosing what not to do and focusing relentlessly on an impactful, singular goal. The enduring strength of an individual, compelling story in fundraising and community building. Mentioned in This Episode: Best Friends Animal Society website: bestfriends.org The concept of “no‑kill” movement and organizational transformation High‑touch donor practices (handwritten letters, phone calls) Best Friends' in‑house magazine—exclusive storytelling resource shared with supporters Importance of positivity in branding versus traditional guilt‑based messaging Active use of storytelling frameworks like the hero's journey Donor segmentation—print magazine for longtime supporters, digital for broader audiences Volunteer correspondence team for personalized responses Social media channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram) for community engagement This Four-Week Series is Sponsored By: Zeffy – The 100% free fundraising platform for nonprofits. "I envision Horn Lake being the hub of North Mississippi when it comes to animal welfare. I want my animal shelter to be the place that people model their strategies after.” This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and the Rescue Cleaners and Disinfectants. In this episode, host Stacy LeBaron sits down with Glen Andrews, Director of the Horn Lake Animal Shelter in North Mississippi. With over two decades in animal welfare and experience in virtually every shelter role imaginable—from event coordinator to veterinary assistant to director—Glen brings a unique "Renaissance rescuer" perspective to municipal animal services. His journey from Manhattan's urban animal control to rural Mississippi's challenges offers valuable insights into adapting shelter practices across different regional cultures and community needs. Glen shares how he transformed a small, antiquated municipal shelter into a thriving no-kill facility while simultaneously doubling intake numbers. The conversation covers his innovative approaches to community engagement, including low-cost spay/neuter programs, pet food pantries, youth volunteer corps, and strategic community cat management. Glen discusses the importance of removing the enforcement stigma from municipal shelters and positioning them as community resources that help people keep their pets rather than judging pet owners in crisis. Whether you're working in a large urban shelter or a small rural facility, this episode provides actionable strategies for building community trust, implementing sustainable programs with limited resources, and achieving life-saving outcomes. Glen's emphasis on understanding local demographics, strategic partnerships, and the power of microchipping offers a roadmap for municipal shelters looking to modernize their approach and better serve both animals and the people who care about them. Press play now for: How Glen's diverse shelter experience prepared him to lead comprehensive reform at a small municipal facility The cultural differences in pet ownership between urban North and rural South, and how to adapt programming accordingly Strategies for removing the enforcement stigma from municipal shelters and building community trust Details on Horn Lake's innovative programs: low-cost spay/neuter, pet food pantry, and youth volunteer corps Glen's data-driven approach to community cats and achieving 100% more TNR surgeries than neighboring areas How to achieve no-kill status while doubling intake through strategic partnerships and enhanced marketing The game-changing impact of mandatory microchipping and achieving 20% above national average for return-to-owner rates Glen's vision for microchipping every animal in Horn Lake and creating a model for other communities Practical advice for small municipal shelters on accessing grants and proving community need The importance of municipal leadership support and how to work within government structures Resources mentioned: Horn Lake Animal Shelter Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/HornLakeAnimalShelter/) Horn Lake Animal Shelter website (https://www.hornlake.org/departments/AnimalShelter) Horn Lake Animal Shelter phone: (662) 393-5857 Horn Lake Animal Shelter Petfinder page (https://www.petfinder.com/member/us/ms/horn-lake/friends-of-horn-lake-animal-shelter-ms71/) Maddie's Fund website (https://www.maddiesfund.org/) Maddie's Pet Forum (https://forum.maddiesfund.org/home) Maddie's University education courses (https://university.maddiesfund.org/) Best Friends Animal Society website (https://bestfriends.org/) Community Cats Podcast website (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/) Maddie's Fund grant programs (https://www.maddiesfund.org/) Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies623) Rescue Cleaners and Disinfectants (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/virox) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. In this powerful episode, we sit down with Daphna Nachminovitch, Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations at PETA, to unpack the growing controversy surrounding the “no-kill” movement—specifically the bold promises made by Best Friends Animal Society. With a reported annual revenue of $173 million, Best Friends has pledged a "no-kill nation by 2025," a goal PETA says is not only unrealistic, but deeply harmful to animals and the people trying to help them.Daphna shares PETA's concerns about how this rhetoric has shaped sheltering policy across the U.S., encouraging shelters to prioritize optics over outcomes. We explore how the use of emotionally charged language like "killing" instead of "euthanasia" and aggressive advocacy tactics have created a culture of fear, burnout, and resentment among animal welfare professionals. This is a critical, no-holds-barred conversation about what true compassion in animal sheltering looks like—and the cost of chasing promises that sound good but ignore the complex realities on the ground.

Howdy folks of the interwebs! Welcome back for another shenanigan infused journey into the mind of this particular Garbage Can Dood!Tonight's discussion is on the Zizian transpocalypse, Silicon Valley based, AI focused, vegan, homicidal death cult! And the attorney who represented the cult leader Jack "Zithlord" Lasota in criminal charges that Lasota would fake his death in 2022 to avoid those charges!!The Zithlord's attorney has some interest'n friends...some interest'n "Best Friends"! Notably, Process Church characters such as John Waters (infamous film director) & Boyd Rice! That same attorney has some interest'n political backers, such as National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter & other "Best Friends" in the Los Angeles region. One "Best Friend" that is at least tertiarily connected to the same agency as another political backer of that same attorney - was recently sentenced in unrelated charges in Ohio, described as a "serial killer of dogs".That "serial killer of dogs" was a poster child for the Process Church/"Best Friends Animal Society" in their pitbull lobby. Not only was his "no kill" animal shelters in both Ohio and later in California funded by "Best Friends" and his pitbulls were routinely provided by "Best Friends"/Process - even whilst ol boy was on the run from charges in Ohio for merc'n dogs - his "Best Friends" set him up with a new pitbull operation in Southern California! That is until the US Marshal's sting operation in LA in 2021 to arrest Steffan Baldwin/Finkelstein for Ohio charges, upon Baldwin's arrival back in Ohio for "serial killer of dogs" charges - his fingerprints were input into the national database. Baldwin's prints would me a match for the "#1 suspect" in a cold case disappearance of Maura Murray in New Hampshire in 2004. Murray just happened to be Baldwin/Finkelstein's exgirlfriend from West Point Academy, allegedly last seeing her in 2001.Anyhow, folks of the interwebs thank for join'n me to get a lil GCD! This debilitating syndrome has spread as more and more of us are being asked to care for parents and children while maintaining demanding careers and trying to run a home. Compassion fatigue can be hard to recognize, and it's imperative we do, because it has a high correlation with both physical illness and suicidal ideation. In this episode you will learn: Signs you or someone you know may be experiencing compassion fatigue. The most dangerous point in the timeline of compassion fatigue. The differences between trauma and grief and how they co-occur with this syndrome. Steps you can take to reduce compassion fatigue. Tips for folks who aren't into meditation. Juliette Watt has been an ATP airplane pilot and Master Flight Instructor; a Playboy Bunny; a soap opera writer for ABC Television and a theater writer/performer. She has won two Writers Guild Awards and has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy. She also is an animal rights advocate who worked for Best Friends Animal Society for almost a decade. Juliette most recently added TEDx Fargo speaker to her extensive resume. Her current mission is twofold; to help people who are struggling with the debilitating and potentially lethal symptoms of Compassion Fatigue; the emotional and physical burden created by caring for others in distress or neglecting your own life-stress and guiding people to create the true life of their dreams. The lines between responsibilities and budgets of the marketing and fundraising departments can often blur at nonprofits. Although each department brings important and unique assets to an organization, when they align and work together, they can create a more impactful experience for constituents. In this episode, Pursuant CEO, Trent Ricker spoke with Sue Citro, Chief Experience Officer at Best Friends Animal Society about ways leaders can encourage collaboration between the fundraising and marketing departments to create optimal stewardship experiences. As Chief Experience Officer, Sue ensures that the marketing communications, fundraising, and experience teams are working in unison to create the best experience possible for donors and people who interact with Best Friends Animal Society.
Peter Shankman is a serial entrepreneur, author, speaker, podcaster, and thought leader in marketing and public relations. Ever wanted to be quoted in a major news outlet as an authority or an expert in your space? Now, you can get valuable PR placements for free. In this conversation, we talked about Peter's free new online service, Source of Sources. Launched earlier this summer, SOS is already making waves in the world of public relations with over 22,000 subscribers. Much like its better-known earlier incarnation, HARO – which stands for Help a Reporter Out – Source of Sources is an email listserv designed to make it easier for journalists to find the sources they need, and for sources, such as brands, business owners, and thought leaders to get the publicity they seek. Up to three times a day, subscribers get an email with queries by journalists from various media outlets. If a journalist asks about a topic you know a lot about, simply reply directly with helpful information or feedback for a chance to be featured or quoted in the story. The only rule? Only reply to a journalist's query, or SOS, if you have something productive and relevant to add. If you respond with something unhelpful, you will be permanently removed from the list! No exceptions; no appeals. This is serious business. He's not messing around here! Peter Shankman is perhaps best known as the founder of HARO (Help a Reporter Out), an online service that worked the same ways as Source of Sources. Groundbreaking at the time and user-friendly, HARO bridged the gap between journalists and public brands seeking media coverage by allowing journalists to connect with industry experts and the public for feedback on issues related to their reporting. In 2010, HARO was sold to Vocus, which was subsequently acquired by Cision in 2014. Earlier this year, Cision folded the classic HARO into Connectively, a web-based tool. Shortly after, our guest, Peter Shankman revived HARO as Source of Sources, an incredible resource he provides to subscribers free of charge. A lifelong Manhattanite, marketing expert, and futurist, the New York Times called Peter Shankman “a rock star who knows everything about social media and then some.” He is a 5X best-selling author, and the author of Faster Than Normal: Turbocharge Your Focus, Productivity, and Success with the Secrets of the ADHD Brain. He also has a fantastic podcast about ADHD called The Faster than Normal podcast where he interviews psychologists and successful people from all fields who have ADHD. I highly recommend the book and the podcast is one of my favorites! In this episode, Peter Shankman and I spoke about Source of Sources, the current state of PR and news media in general, and how to become savvier consumers of information. We also discussed Mental Capital Consulting, a consultancy he co-founded with a psychologist in 2023 that helps companies attract, hire, and retain neurodiverse employees while helping companies to become neuro-inclusive. And, to top it all off we resolved a mysterious bone of contention about cold pizza. Peter assured us his new service, Source of Sources is free, but he says if you really feel like sending him a donation, you should send it to a charity such as Best Friends Animal Society or The NYC Mayor's Alliance for Animals. In part two of this episode of the Animal Control Report, hosts Ashley, Ashlee, and Daniel engage in a candid conversation with Temma Martin, a former Best Friends Animal Society employee, to discuss the "no kill" movement and its controversial impact on homeless pets. Temma brings her extensive experience to the table, offering her perspective on why "no kill" policies may not be the ultimate solution for animal welfare. The discussion breaks down the unintended consequences of the "no kill" philosophy, such as overcrowded shelters, compromised animal care, and the pressure placed on staff and resources. Temma and the hosts explore why this approach has created a significant divide in the animal welfare industry, highlighting the ethical and practical dilemmas faced by shelters striving to meet "no kill" standards. Tune in for a thought-provoking episode that challenges the idealistic view of "no kill" and prompts a reevaluation of what truly constitutes humane and effective animal welfare practices. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/animalcontrolreport/support
In this episode of the Animal Control Report, we discuss the intense and alarming situation surrounding the Danville Area Humane Society. Recently, the shelter had to close its doors due to security threats linked to its high euthanasia rates—80% for cats and 70% for dogs. Executive Director Paulette Dean explains that as an open admissions shelter, they accept all animals in need, which contributes to their high euthanasia rates. Despite an offer from Best Friends Animal Society to help them transition to a no-kill shelter, Dean and her team declined, prioritizing their mission to take in every animal. We'll explore the implications of this decision, the backlash from Best Friends Animal Society's "Danville Deserves Better" campaign, and the ensuing hate and threats directed at the shelter. We discuss the complexities of animal welfare, the challenges of managing open admissions shelters, and the ethical considerations in balancing animal care and community safety. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on the front lines of animal control. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/animalcontrolreport/support
