Meilech Kohn, originally named Elimeilech Kohn, grew up in a Satmar family residing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He is the first cousin of renowned singer Lipa Schmeltzer. Although he initially distanced himself from the Hasidic community of his upbringing, he later returned to it during his adult years. This personal journey is reflected in his music, which encompasses a diverse range of influences such as Techno music, Mediterranean pop, hints of trip-hop, and the melodic tapestry woven from a life enriched by travel, attentive listening, and emotional vulnerability. In 2016, he achieved unexpected success with his popular song "VeUhavata," propelling him from relative obscurity to fame. Meilech has been homeless, divorced, and running away from his community for many years and his story of teshuva is one of a kind. ____________________________________ ✬ SPONSOR OF THIS EPISODE ✬ ____________________________________ ► TWILLORY: Get $18 off your first purchase of absolutely comfortable clothing for today's casual professional look. We have a special treat for our audience. Our guest is musical artist Ari Lesser. He is a Jewish American rapper, singer and songwriter. He is known for his advocacy for the State of Israel and Jewish religious life and lifestyle. He studied political science, has performed with Gad Elbaz and Lipa Schmeltzer. He has spoken and performed at hundreds of events for Jewish communities around the world, and done shows with Moshav Band and Nissim Black. In 2008 Mr. Lesser became religious and took a Nazirite vow in 2009, the hebrew term for this tradition is Nazir. In the past year we have been discussing the sectarian group of the Jewish followers of Jesus. In our research the Apostle Paul, John The Baptist and James brother of Jesus are discussed as either taking a Nazarite vow or being nazarites. "Nazarite" comes from the Hebrew word nazir meaning "consecrated"(Numbers 6:1–21) or "separated", and may be ultimately derived from a root meaning "to vow", similar to Hebrew nadar. The word nazir is also sometimes used to refer to a prince, who fills a special position of secular power, and the cognate word nezer can refer to either the state of being a nazirite, or else to a physical crown.Abstain from wine and all other grape products, such as vinegar and grapes[3]Refrain from cutting the hair on his head. Not to become ritually impure by contact with corpses or graves, even those of family members.the nazirite would offer a specific animal sacrifice; along with it, the nazirite's hair was to be shorn and burned. On March 30 Mr. Lesser posted on facebook the article “It's not easy being a Nazir in the 21st century.” discussing his experience with a modern orthodox high school that decided to not have him visit their students due to their religious outlook which seems to be against this tradition. "Earlier this year a Modern Orthodox high school reached out to me. They were planning a Shabbaton, and invited me to be the keynote speaker for the weekend, writing in their initial email, “I'm sure our students would find you inspiring and would benefit from having you join us!” They were offering a nice honorarium and I love a good Shabbaton, so I excitedly began planning the trip. I reached out to many of my contacts in the area, letting them know when I'd be coming to town, while simultaneously working with the school to hammer out all the details of the program. Then, several weeks into the process, I received a surprising message from an administrator at the school: “I realize this is a strange question, but do you still have long hair? (in some of the videos it looks like you have shorter hair but I can't tell what's more recent)” I replied openly, “Yes, I took on Nazirus 12 years ago, and I haven't cuMystic-Skeptic Media produces podcasts such as Uncensored Radio Show, Raiders of the Unknown and Jesus The Israelite. Lipa is one of the most talented artists in the Jewish world. His brilliant lyrics and unique style led him to a quick rise to fame. But Lipa was still figuring out who he was. Schmeltzer's music has both gained popularity due to the fusion of traditional Chasidic music and lyrics with contemporary music styles. His performance range includes "hard-driving rock tunes, jazzy shuffles, pseudo-rap numbers, solemn prayers, klezmer dances and jokey skits, accompanied by a nine-piece band and a troupe of actors". He writes lyrics in English, Hebrew, and Yiddish. Lipa has been going through a journey. After "leaving" his community and going to college, he has returned with a new look at life, his music and himself. Aside for being an incredible artist he is a deeply intelligent and honest person. Lipa Schmeltzer is a bright star in the world of Jewish music; only his music sounds nothing like traditional Jewish music! In fact, he has been nicknamed, the ‘Jewish Lady Gaga'! Growing up in New York, in an ultra-conservative Hasidic community, Lipa was always different. At school, he was taught all subjects in Yiddish, and when he found it hard to concentrate his teachers called him the 'dumb kid' and told him he would never amount to anything. He had a dream of being a singer, but when he started writing and performing his own songs, his father and rabbi told him to stop and concentrate on studying the Bible. Lipa agreed and publicly apologised to the community for the modern music he had been creating - but it was not long until he started again. Lipa's music and performance style represented a split in his community: the younger Hasidic Jewish who loved the modern Jewish beats and wanted him to perform at their weddings and children's bar mitzvahs, and then the older more reserved Jewish who thought it was disrespectful and would lead people away from holy scripture and on a path to hell. Today Lipa lives in both worlds, creating modern Jewish music while trying to stay true to his roots. But it is not always easy, as Colm Flynn found out when he went to New York to visit Lipa.
