Rebbetzin Chavi Welton, and her husband, Rabbi Levi Welton, were recently appointed shluchim (emissaries) for Chabad of Vanderbilt Alumni Association, working with your professionals in Manhattan. They will also be going on shlichus to Dix Hills, Long Island in New York, to help enhance outreach activities of the Chai Center. In addition to her spiritual work, Rebbetzin Chavi is also an OB-Gyn doctor!Rebbetzin Chavi teaches us that childbirth has a very strong connection to Chasidus. She explains that according to Basi L'Gani, a Chassidic discourse written by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, the Jewish people are recognized as Hashem's bride, just like the woman is the bride to her husband, the chassan. Their purpose in this world is to elevate the mundane to the spiritual. In terms of having a baby, the woman experiences a physical pregnancy and childbirth. She nurses, changes diapers, bathes, and provides necessary physical care for her infant. Spiritually, the Shechina is the feminine presence of Hashem (G-d.) Making a sacred space in our world for the Shechina to rest is a very feminine task. This is done by the woman as she raises her child to observe Hashem's commandments, and therefore elevates the physical to the spiritual, bringing holiness into the world. The geula (coming of Moshiach) is often compared to childbirth. As the woman gets closer to actually birthing her child, her contractions get quicker and she experiences the most pain and discomfort. As we get closer to Moshiach being revealed, the Jewish people are experiencing various forms of severe suffering (hostages, war, anxiety, emotional disorders, etc.) May Moshiah come soon so that we can experience true pleasure and peace!Rebbetzin Chavi teaches us something very interesting about the word Caesar. The word, Caesar, means to cut. Thousands of years ago, Julius Caesar's grandfather was delivered by someone cutting his great grand-mother's stomach open to pull out the baby. This name, Caesar, stuck to future generations of the family. Caesar was a leader. A leader does what no one else can do. When they need something to happen, they will go to all lengths and extremes, literally breaking down walls (both physical and metaphorical) to make it happen. When a woman delivers a baby via Caesarian Section (C-Section), the doctor literally breaks down a wall (the mother's stomach) to take out the baby. Spiritually, it is said that the women will bring Moshiach by "breaking down walls" in their dedication to Hashem, keeping the mitzvos of the Torah, and raising children who act justly and morally, bringing Hashem's light into the world.Rebbetzin Chavi goes on to speak about pregnancy and the post-partum period of childbirth, and shares insights as to how the chasidic perspective can enhance a woman's experiences in these phases of her life. She also talks about the role that Chasidus plays in her job as a doctor and in her interactions with her patients. What resonated with me the most is the way she lives her life in total alignment with her Chasidic values and beliefs. She is an example of a righteous and wise Chasidic woman, and she conducts herself as such in the hospital with her patients. Leading by example, instead of forcing her beliefs on others, allows people to have the space to absorb her teachings and mannerisms, and to emulate them, if they choose to do so, out of their own accord.Conact: atrebbetzins@gmail.com Vera Kessler (host of America's Top Rebbetzins) is a certified life coach. I am very excited to present my conversation with Chava Green, a women's studies scholar and a Chassidic Jew. Chava's dissertation, “the Hasidic face of feminism," explores how the idea of feminism expresses itself in the Chabad community, both through the Rebbe's teachings and in the lives of Chabad women. In our conversation, Chava and I define feminism and discuss this seemingly paradoxical idea of a "Chasidic Feminist." We hear about her journey to becoming a Chasidic feminist, and dive a bit deeper into her research. We touch on some common struggles that many Jewish women face and how the Rebbe spoke to those challenges. We also speak about sheitels (wigs) and cleaning help, among other things-this is a must-listen! A bit more about Chava: Chava Green received her PhD in Religious Studies from Emory University in May 2024. She has a BA in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University–New Brunswick. In between her undergraduate and graduate work, she lived in Israel for two years studying Judaism in Jerusalem and Tzfat (Safed). Chava lives in Philadelphia with her husband and three children. This coming year she will be a visiting scholar at UPenn in the Jewish Studies department while also teaching classes in the Chabad girl's high school. Chava is passionate about bridging her academic work to the Jewish community and to a popular audience. Her writings can be found on TheJewishWoman.org. Rabbi Yisrael Lifshitz, a well-known commentator on the Mishnah, included a provocative legend about Moshe Rabbeinu in his writings, suggesting that Moshe naturally possessed negative character traits. Over the following decades, some rabbis strongly opposed this legend, arguing that its claims were baseless and defamed Moshe's revered image. In this class, we'll talk about the origins of this controversial story, look at both sides of the debate, and explore why this account struck a chord with many Chasidic authors. The Provocative Portrait: Unveiling the True Face of Moshe Rabbeinu
One of the great ploys of the evil inclination is to get a person to believe that Hashem is not interested in his service, especially when things aren't going the way the person wants, and he tries harder to do more mitzvot, but things still don't improve. Then the evil inclination tells him, why bother? Hashem is not accepting what you're doing anyway. If the person would only know how much Hashem values everything he has done already and continues to do, he would do it even better. If things don't improve when we improve, that just means the worth of our avodah becomes infinitely greater. When the evil inclination works overtime to get us to try and turn away from Hashem, that's when Hashem wants us the most. No matter what a person has done, Hashem always wants his avodah . So long as there's life, there's a way to improve. Hashem yearns even for the people who are completely estranged from Him. Every Jew is His precious child, and He can't wait to be close to us. Rabbi Elkarif from Israel told a story that was related by a tour guide in Italy, which recently took place. There was a group of Chasidim, traveling by bus on a highway in Italy that rarely has traffic. They intended to pray Mincha when they returned to their hotel, but unexpectedly, there was a big traffic jam on the highway. When they realized they wouldn't make it back in time for Mincha, they told the tour guide they wanted to pull over to a gas station so that they could pray there. The tour guide encouraged them to pray on the bus, being that in Italy there was a lot of anti-Semitism, and if people would see a large group of Jews all standing together at a gas station, who knows what would happen. The Chasidim were not worried. They insisted on pulling over so they could pray the right way. The guide directed the driver off the highway, and they all got off the bus, washed up, and were getting ready to start Mincha. All of a sudden, a huge motorcycle making loud, obnoxious noises pulled up right next to them, with a large man sporting a ponytail on it. He looked very scary. He lifted off his dark helmet, took one look at the Chasidic group, and then said, “Mincha?” They were shocked by his request, and they proceeded to pray together as a group. At the conclusion of Mincha, this biker said Kaddish, and then got back on his bike and was ready to go. One of the Chasidim approached him and asked him what his story was. The biker said he grew up in Jerusalem in a religious family, but he moved away and declined rapidly in his Torah and mitzvot. His father passed away a few years ago, and on his deathbed, he asked him to please say Kaddish for him. He mentioned that he always begged him to put on tefillin and keep Shabbat, but he never listened. Now he was imploring him to say Kaddish on his behalf. The biker told his father, “I eat non-kosher, and I use my mouth to speak inappropriately. This mouth will not be able to lift your soul with its Kaddish.” His father said, “No, the Kaddish will help,” and once again reiterated the importance of him saying it. The biker finally agreed. Every year, he made it a point to say Kaddish on the yahrtzeit . Then he said, “Today, I planned on traveling from my city in Italy where I live to Merce, 700 kilometers away. In the middle of the journey, I remembered it was my father's yahrtzeit , and it was not going to be possible to find any shuls in the small towns on the way. I turned to Hashem and said, “If my Kaddish has any value, and You want me to say it, please help me find a minyan.” I kept riding my bike, and as the sun was setting, I saw your group gathering at the gas station out of nowhere. My heart jumped. Hashem made it possible for me to say Kaddish today. He showed me that even my Kaddish is worth something.`` Hashem adores everything we do. There is never a time that He does not desire our avodah

Have you ever wondered what the blueprint for spiritual leadership within the Chasidic world looks like? Join us as we unravel the fabric of true rebellion—not the kind that stirs chaos but leads with wisdom, love, and a deep connection to Hashem. Our conversation with a distinguished Chasidic scholar takes you into the intricate dance of tradition and modernity, where the lineages of the past meet the digital platforms of the present. We cast a discerning eye on the phenomenon of social media spiritual influencers, evaluating the virtues of established paths over transient trends in our quest for authentic guidance.Navigating the spiritual landscape requires more than a map; it needs a compass that points to the 'chatzar,' the divine inner sanctum. During this episode, our guest and I explore what it means to embrace a 'derech,' a personal voyage steeped in centuries-old teachings and practices. We discuss the vitality of finding a Rebbe who resonates with your soul and committing to a 'mahalich,' a way of life that elevates your practice and shields you from the pitfalls of fleeting fads. It's a journey through the heart of Chasidism, seeking the essence of what it means to stand in the presence of the Almighty.Support the showJoin the WhatsApp community for daily motivational Torah content! Join us for a conversation with Chef Rossi about her memoir, The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews! It's a rollercoaster that whisks you through a world bursting with rich characters, uproarious dialogue, vivid snapshots of the Orthodox community and the gritty, pulsating 1980s New York City scene -- raw, on the edge, but gloriously alive. Rossi was raised in a conservative Jewish family, expected to toe the line, marry right, and play by the kosher rulebook. But at 16, she flipped the script, blossoming into a rebellious renegade, craving adventure over conformity. And just as she tasted freedom, her parents swooped in, yanked her away, and dropped her off with a Chasidic rabbi in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Rossi has been published in outlets including The Daily News, The New York Post, Time Out New York, and McSweeney's, to name a few. She has been the food writer of the “Eat Me” column for Bust magazine since 1998, hosts her own hit radio show on WOMR and WFMR in Cape Cod called Bite This, now in its nineteenth season, has been featured on The Food Network and NPR and has been a popular blogger for The Huffington Post. Her first memoir, “The Raging Skillet: The True Life Story of Chef Rossi” was published by The Feminist Press to rave reviews. In addition to memoir, Rossi has written two full-length plays, a number of one-act comedies, a one-woman stage adaptation of Queen of the Jews, and launched the Raging and Eating podcast. For the YouTube version click here: https://youtu.be/_uxPKgA6hVUYou might have heard a bit about the Hasidic Jewish music scene from my previous videos or from browsing YouTube. It's a wonderful world, and Yossi Desser is a wonderful part of it. He's a Satmar Kiryas Joel native (like me) who has a deep love for special kinds of Jewish songs like Rabbi Yomtov Ehrlich songs, old Yiddish theater songs, the stories around Hasidic niggun and the adaptations of Christmas carols to Yiddish Chanukah Carols. In this segment, Yossi and I sit down to discuss the stories around some iconic Jewish music and he performs some of it. I invite you to join this holiday-time discussion and to leave a comment! I added the translations to the songs so you can follow along no matter if you understand Yiddish, Hebrew or Hungarian. Many thanks to Mrs. Dina Storch whose translation of ‘Yom Kippur' by Yom-Tov Ehrlich was very helpful.11:15 ‘Ani Mamin' by a Modzitz Hasid who perished in the holocaust32:55 ‘Yom Kippur' by Reb Yom-Tov Ehrlich49:51 Hasidic Niggun (Rizhuner)1:00:45 ‘Belz' or ‘Beltz', a Yiddish classic song1:09:59 ‘Sola Kokosh Mar' from the Kalover Rebbe1:21:31 ‘Luz a Shnei' by Yossi Desser
Disco music had been a thing from the early 70s on, but not so much in the mainstream. Parts of the African-American, Latino and gay communities had been cherishing the music as an event - going out to dance in discotheques was the thing. There's are books that go through the history of disco music and what put that music underground. Some of the music became top forty success stories, but disco really exploded in 1977 thanks to a movie featuring a TV actor and songs by a group past their glory days. Welcome to episode 108 of See Hear Podcast. Robert Stigwood bought the film rights to a fictitious article by Nik Cohn called “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night”. He invested $3.5M into making the film, and made sure his act The Bee Gees were going to be featured on the soundtrack. John Travolta in between Welcome Back Kotter seasons starred as a young working class man from Brooklyn who hates his job and home life, and only finds solace when dancing at the 2001 Odyssey Discotheque. The film is a great character study of what drives people and their self esteem. Kerry, Tim and I welcome first-time guest to the show, Dan Fisher. Dan has started a great new podcast called Let's Talk Ten where he and guests run off lists about all manner things devoted to pop culture. I invited him to our virtual table and Saturday Night Fever was his pick.....it triggered a great discussion, although as Frank Santopadre would say, we barely scratched the surface. The film has so many thematic elements to riff on. We cover some of those, but we also look at disco as a phenomenon (and how it influenced Chasidic music and Joe Raposo), 70s Hollywood movie anti-heroes, the violent backlash to disco music, and aspiring for something better in life. A warning: I sing – twice. We're grateful that Dan came to us with this pick and was such an active participant in the episode. It won't be his last time with us. You should search for him on Facebook to follow his “Rank 'Em” posts (explained at the start of the episode), and you can find Let's Talk Ten at https://letstalktenpodcast.buzzsprout.com/ or whatever app you use to listen to podcasts.
