The bizarre cult of Lev Tahor is small in number yet somehow is able to break local laws, move hundreds of members across international borders and escape the authorities with ease. Charged with such egregious crimes as child trafficking, abuse, forced marriages, and numerous others they continue to this day. Who is funding this group? Who are they connected to and are there darker and deeper players involved? Let's look at Lev Tahor; the cult you most likely know very little about!!Email us at: downtherh@protonmail.com

Mendy Levy was born in 2003 in Canada to parents who were members of Lev Tahor, an extremist Jewish cult founded in the 1980s. Shunned by members of other Jewish groups and facing a kidnapping scandal, its leader Shlomo Helbrans had moved Lev Tahor to Canada in the 1990s. Helbrans then moved the group to Guatemala in 2014, in the wake of child abuse investigations in Quebec. Levy escaped the group in 2018 and now splits his time between Canada and New York. Shlomo Helbrans drowned in Guatemala in 2017. US authorities arrested his son, Nachman Helbrans, and other Lev Tahor leaders in late 2018 and 2021. They're currently on trial in federal court in New York on kidnapping and fraud charges, to which they've pleaded not guilty. The remainder of Lev Tahor, which numbers an estimated 300 people, continues to live in Guatemala and has been unsuccessfully trying to move to Iran. In this very unique episode, we interview cult-expert Rick Alan Ross to shed light on the definition of a cult and the techniques they use to recruit and control their members. Some historical and recent examples of cults include Adolph Hitler, Branch Davidians, Scientology, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho), and Lev Tahor. Ross explains common cult techniques people should look out for and who is generally susceptible. He also answers the question of whether a cult needs to be an organized group that holds meetings or if an individual can fall into the same trap by following politicians, conspiracy theorists, social media influencers, or even people as "unthreatening" as health coaches. Ross explains the difference between religion and cult, and how the Orthodox Jewish community can protect themselves from cult leaders/figures within their own religion, even when certain leaders still cast a big shadow after their death. He clarifies whether Hassidic sects like Chabad or Breslov fall under the category of a cult. Listeners will learn how someone can know if they're in a cult and how they can escape, considering that their safety may be compromised if they leave or expose the cult. Finally, Ross offers insights into how an ex-cult member can "deprogram" and reintegrate into normal society. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judaismdemystified/support

Filth is a virtue! If you're a member of Aum Shinrikyo, you'll know this already and this, dear Eavesdroppers, is just a small taste of what we're talking about this week on Eavesdroppin', when hosts Geordie & Michelle investigate the weird world of two cults…At the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, a documentary called AUM: The Cult At The End of The World shocked viewers with its doomsday prophesies and culty behaviours. This week, Michelle digs into the cult and its leader, Shoko Asahara to uncover what happened in the lead up to the 1995 nerve gas attacks on the Tokyo subway and beyond, including a disturbing story of homemade nukes detonated in the Western Australian outback…Geordie then looks at an extremist branch of Judaism called Lev Tahor. With claims of child sex abuse, teen marriages, women forced to wear head-to-toe cloaks from the age of 3 and extreme punishments, Geordie asks the question: is it an extreme religion or a cult? With accounts from an ex member called Yisrael and a look at what Lev Tahor stands for, it's up to you to decide…We hope you enjoy this week's episode and remember, wherever you are, whatever you do, just keep Eavesdroppin'!*Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever and our opinions are just opinions not fact, soooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy! Composer: Rav Mordechai Twerski Singer: Lev Tahor Volume 2 What better way to get into the mood of the 3 weeks than to listen to this beautiful acapella version of Im Eshkacheich. May this song be the last Im Eshkacheich we listen to, and may Mashiach usher in a new era with the building of the Beis Hamikdash bimheira biyameinu amen. One winter day in 2013, nearly 250 members of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish group called Lev Tahor vanished from the remote town of Saint Agathe, Quebec. As Montreal Gazette reporter Jason Magder investigated, he heard concerning stories: of child abuse, of children taken away from their parents, and of people being sedated with antipsychotic drugs. In many ways, the story of Lev Tahor is one with more questions than answers: How has the group managed to evade the authorities for so long? How can authorities better work together across provincial and state lines to protect the most vulnerable? And, despite a series of criminal convictions, why does the group continue to attract followers? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In anticipation of Purim, Doctor Juni and Rabbi Kivelevitz discuss various aspects of the traditional celebration. Juni comments that encouraging inebriation is dangerous on several levels, while Kivelevitz contextualizes the origin of Purim shenanigans – especially drinking with abandon to (עד דלא ידע) -- in the millennia of oppression Jews have suffered, seeing it as a type of safety valve . Abandoning the community's usual grim reality provided a relief to the relentless misery. Juni asserts that moderate social drinking and having a "shot" after a long day is not maladaptive. He outlines the psychology and chemistry of what occurs for one who is liquored up. He presents alcohol as a chemical depressant, taking issue with scriptural references suggesting that drinking makes people happy. Giving anecdotal and clear behavior references, he describes the direct physiological effects , eg:,slowing reaction time, interfering with logical thinking, and disolving inhibition. Kivelevitz comments that many persons seek the disinhibitory effect, since it allows them to express beliefs and emotions they otherwise stifle due to impropriety. Juni elaborates on how having a drink can make individuals more courageous, yet cause irresponsible and reckless actions. The doctor notes how alcohol engenders manic behavior (which can be perceived as “happy”) in equal parts with dangerous aggression. Kivelevitz gives his take on the the institution of the "Purim Rov" in Chassidic circles, who role is to roast and satirize grand leaders of the courts of the devoted. He compares this with the "Purim Shpiels" that were a staple of Yeshiva life in the last century. Both,he insists were subtle methods for airing grievances which can be addressed and corrected after the Holiday. The pair associate general lampooning and comic displacement as a powerful social catalyst, with Juni invoking Dr. Abraham Twersky's spot on recognition of archtypes represented by the Peanuts characters in the three volumes of self-help the late psychologist authored . Juni wonders about the phenomenon of "Purim Torah", where scholars and students alike seemingly poke fun at the methodology of Talmudic scholarship, and suggests this reveals an underlying dissatisfaction with a process that they have devoted their lives to. Kivelevitz, however, contextualizes this as a way to lovingly embrace a system that at times can lead to absurd conclusions. Doctor Samuel Juni is one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. He has published groundbreaking original research in seventy different peer reviewed journals, and is cited continuously with respect by colleagues and experts in the field who have built on his theories and observations. Samuel Juni studied in Yeshivas Chaim Berlin under Rav Yitzchack Hutner, and in Yeshiva University as a Talmid of Rav Joseph Dov Soloveitchick. Professor Juni is a prominent member of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, and has regularly presented addresses to captivated audiences. Associated with NYU since 1979, Juni has served as Director of MA and PhD programs, all the while heading teams engaged in important research. Professor Juni's scholarship on aberrant behavior across the cultural, ethnic, and religious spectrum is founded on psychometric methodology and based on a psycho-dynamic psychopathology perspective. He is arguably the preeminent expert in Differential Diagnostics, with each of his myriad studies entailing parallel efforts in theory construction and empirical data collection from normative and clinical populations. Professor Juni created and directed NYU's Graduate Program in Tel Aviv titled Cross-Cultural Group Dynamics in Stressful Environments. Based in Yerushalayim, he collaborates with Israeli academic and mental health specialists in the study of dissonant factors and tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and those within the Orthodox Jewish community, while exploring personality challenges of second-generation Holocaust survivors. Below is a partial list of the journals to which Professor Juni has contributed over 120 articles. Many are available on line Journal of Forensic Psychology Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment, and Trauma.
