In anticipation of our upcoming series, we want to share with you our episode with Shulem Deen, originally released in June 2020. In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, David discusses with special guest and former member of the Ultra-Orthodox community, Shulem Deen, the struggle and importance of balancing one's individual needs with those of the community.Though many of us are aware of the extreme disconnect that exists between the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and the secular world, the result of this unfortunate dynamic offers powerful insight. In particular, the intense and likely under-discussed experience of ex-Ultra-Orthodox community members (a group referred to by many as ‘Off The Derech' or OTD) raises important questions about the reality of this intercommunity conflict and life as a modern Jew. In what ways do the religious and secular worlds misunderstand each other? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Ultra-Orthodox and secular worlds in facilitating a positive life for their members? How can we as individuals combat the inescapable myopia of living within a social bubble? Tune in to join David and Shulem in seeking answers to these important questions.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/18forty-podcast--4344730/support.

In today's episode of Let's Talk Business, we are excited to present a compelling conversation with Shulem Berkowitz, an esteemed leadership coach and business strategist. Hosted by Meny Hoffman, this episode dives deep into the intricate journey of transforming from a skilled craftsman to an effective leader. Shulem recounts his own transition from excelling in writing, graphic design, and printing to embracing his role as a leadership coach. His journey underscores the challenges and rewards of moving beyond personal accomplishments to empowering others. Highlighting the fundamental distinctions between consultants, coaches, and therapists, Shulem and Meny explore how each role uniquely contributes to business success. Listeners are taken through practical strategies for overcoming bottlenecks, such as temporarily stepping away from daily operations and identifying delegable tasks. Shulem emphasizes the importance of focusing on the 20% of crucial tasks that leaders must handle themselves and trusting the team with the rest. This episode also sheds light on self-awareness and growth, encouraging leaders to recognize their unique strengths and leverage them effectively. The discussion extends to company culture, where Shulem highlights the necessity of clear communication and value alignment. Drawing parallels between organizational success and the leader's personal development, he illustrates how achieving business goals is intertwined with personal growth and overcoming internal barriers. By focusing on enabling team members and embracing leadership roles, individuals can foster business growth and personal development. Recognizing the unique contributions of consultants, coaches, and therapists can help individuals and organizations leverage the right expertise at the right time. This understanding is crucial for overcoming obstacles and achieving organizational goals. Leadership effectiveness is closely tied to self-awareness and continuous personal development. Shulem emphasizes the significance of understanding one's strengths and delegating tasks to create space for strategic leadership. Shulem highlights the necessity of aligning company culture with shared values and clear communication. Leaders should articulate their goals and foster a supportive culture to ensure that team members act in ways that reflect the company's ethos. Shulem's experience underscores the importance of seeking external support and being open to help. Understanding that asking for assistance is a strength rather than a weakness can lead to greater success and continuous growth, both personally and professionally.   PandaDoc Rock Leadership Solutions Sholem's Linkedin

SPOILER ALERT. Ultra orthodox religious Jewish series. Looking at some different cultures dynamics. Introduction “Shtisel” is a critically acclaimed Israeli television drama that depicts the everyday life of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family living in Jerusalem. Created by Ori Elon and Yehonatan Indursky, the series first premiered on Yes Studios in June 2013, and it has since gained popularity in Israel and internationally. The show explores the struggles and triumphs of the Shtisel family, particularly Shulem Shtisel, a widowed father and patriarch of the family. The show is known for its authenticity, nuanced characters, and compelling storytelling. In this essay, we will explore the themes, characters, and impact of “Shtisel.” Themes One of the central themes of “Shtisel” is the tension between tradition and modernity. The ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Jerusalem is known for its strict adherence to tradition and religious law, but many characters in the show are grappling with the challenges of living in a modern world. For example, Shulem Shtisel's son, Akiva, is a talented artist who must navigate the expectations of his community, which views art as frivolous and potentially sinful. Akiva's struggle to balance his artistic passion with his religious obligations is a central plotline in the show. Another theme that emerges in “Shtisel” is the importance of family and community. The Shtisel family is a tight-knit group that supports each other through the ups and downs of life. At the same time, the show also portrays the conflicts that arise within families and communities, particularly when there are differences in values or beliefs. For example, Shulem's daughter, Giti, is married to a man who is emotionally distant and unfaithful, which creates tension within the family. Finally, “Shtisel” also explores the complexities of faith and spirituality. The characters in the show are deeply committed to their religious beliefs, but they also struggle with doubt, temptation, and the challenges of living a good life. The show portrays the tensions that arise when people are forced to confront their own flaws and weaknesses, as well as the ways in which faith can provide comfort and meaning in difficult times. Characters “Shtisel” is known for its complex and nuanced characters, each of whom is grappling with their own struggles and challenges. Shulem Shtisel, played by Dov Glickman, is the patriarch of the family and a respected teacher in the ultra-Orthodox community. He is a strict adherent to tradition and religious law, but he is also compassionate and understanding towards his family members. Shulem's relationship with his son, Akiva, is one of the most compelling aspects of the show, as they struggle to find common ground despite their vastly different values and interests. Akiva Shtisel, played by Michael Aloni, is a talented artist who is struggling to reconcile his artistic passions with his religious obligations. He is often at odds with his father and other members of the community, who view art as frivolous and potentially sinful. Akiva's relationships with his family members, particularly his cousin, Elisheva, and his love interest, Libbi, are some of the most heartwarming and poignant moments in the show. Giti Weiss, played by Neta Riskin, is Shulem's daughter and a mother of four. She is married to Lippe, a man who is emotionally distant and unfaithful, which creates tension within the family. Giti's struggle to maintain her faith and her commitment to her family despite her husband's infidelity is one of the most poignant storylines in the show. Impact “Shtisel” has had a significant impact on Israeli and international audiences, particularly for its portrayal of ultra-Orthodox Jewish people.

Rav Shulem Eliezer Halberstam of Ratzfert (1862-1944), was one of the younger children of his illustrious father the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. Orphaned as a young child, he'd go on to become one of the great chassidic leaders of Hungarian Jewry. Known for his modesty, simplicity, care and leadership of his many followers, he would visit his chassidim in Hungary and Galicia, making an annual trip for his father's yahrtzeit in Sanz. When the war broke out, the tragedy of Polish Jewry broke him, as he attempted to do all he could to save family members and followers under Nazi occupation. With the German invasion of Hungary in March 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz where he met his end, with his dying words being to remember what had happened here. His legacy continues with the dynasties of Satmar, Bobov and others which number among his descendants.   Check out the story of the Divrei Chaim here: https://jsoundbites.podbean.com/e/king-of-galicia-the-divrei-chaim-of-sanz/ Subscribe To Our Podcast on:   PodBean: https://jsoundbites.podbean.com/   Follow us on Twitter or Instagram at @Jsoundbites You can email Yehuda at yehuda@yehudageberer.com

In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, David discusses with special guest and former member of the Ultra-Orthodox community, Shulem Deen, the struggle and importance of balancing one’s individual needs with those of the community. Though many of us are aware of the extreme disconnect that exists between the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and the secular world, the result of this unfortunate dynamic offers powerful insight. In particular, the intense and likely under-discussed experience of ex-Ultra-Orthodox community members (a group referred to by many as ‘Off The Derech’ or OTD) raises important questions about the reality of this intercommunity conflict and life as a modern Jew. In what ways do the religious and secular worlds misunderstand each other? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Ultra-Orthodox and secular worlds in facilitating a positive life for their members? How can we as individuals combat the inescapable myopia of living within a social bubble? Tune in to join David and Shulem in seeking answers to these important questions.

Shulem Deen was raised in an ultra-orthodox sect, the Skverers, considered too extreme even for other Hasidic Jews. He grew up speaking Yiddish in the middle of New York, married in his teens and had five children. Then everything began to change. His book All Who Go Do Not Return is a tell-all of both of the extreme insularity of Hasidic life, and the journey of his soul from the Skverers to the secular world he lives in today. It is a path of great discovery, and tremendous sacrifice. Shulem Deen is a former Hasidic Jew. Since leaving that world, he’s founded the website Unpious which is a voice for other ultra-Orthodox Jews who may be rethinking their faith. His new memoir is called "All Who Go Do Not Return." We spoke with Shulem about the hypocrisy of Hasidic Jews regarding modern technology, how that community reacted to an episode of This American Life focusing on them, and how America Online became his gateway to the outside world.

Winner of the 2015 National Jewish Book Award, Contemporary Jewish Life and Practice At fourteen, young Shulem Deen, a Hassid in Boro Park, New York, lost his loving father. How was he to deal with the enormous gap in his life that his father’s early death left? He embraced -and was embraced by – a pious spiritual community, the Skverer Hassidim, who had their own town, New Square, New York. In this discreet town of approximately 12,000, only 30 miles north of New York city, the Skverer Hassidim could control everything, or nearly so. So began Deen’s immersion in the life of the Skverer Hassidim, an Eastern European Hassidic group transplanted to the New World — without change! For a time, Deen’s new life worked. He studied, married, had children—but this thinking, questioning young man soon learned that there was no room for questions that challenged accepted norms of the community. How he navigated the need to be honest with himself with the demands of family he loved makes for a page-turning memoir. This well-written book takes the reader through little-known aspects of a Hassidic community, both its strengths and vulnerabilities. At once a wealth of psychological, sociological, and just plain interesting episodes as Deen grows and matures, All Who Go Do Not Return: A Memoir (Graywolf Press, 2015) rewards the reader with distinctive insights into the ultra-religious world of the Hassidim. Shulem Deen’s popular memoir about his life in an insular Hassidic community breaks new ground, written as it is from a male perspective. Having left New Square, Deen founded and edits Unpious, Voices of the Hassidic Friend, an online journal. He is on the board of Footsteps, an important New York-based group that helps people who choose to transition out of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish world. Shulem writes for The Forward, Tabletmag, and other publications. His memoir has been hailed in newspapers and magazines as diverse as The Wall Street Journal and the Huffington Post. He speaks regularly to audiences in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and elsewhere about his life and memoir. Read this compelling account of a young man’s immersion in an embracing spiritual community and his struggle to be true to himself and his loved ones. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, we conclude Shulem Deen’s story.  In part I, we heard how the internet led him on a path where he was exiled from his community and separated from his family. In part II, Sruthi Pinnamaneni tells the story of how the Hasidic community has tried to block off a corner of the internet for itself, and how this new, informal Hasidic internet might offer Shulem a way back.   Thanks for listening!
