Mordechai Shapiro was born in 1989 in Monsey, New York. Born into a musical family, his father is a chazzan and his mother has a background as a trained opera singer. He learned in yeshiva in Ashar, Netiv Aryeh, and Yeshivas Bais Yisroel. Shapiro made his musical debut as the star soloist of the Miami Boys Choir. After leaving the choir, Shapiro took a break from music until his voice transitioned sufficiently. He was a student of legendary voice teacher William Riley. He worked in other jobs and was a regular at birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, engagements, and as a one-man-band. Eventually, he began performing at weddings and other Jewish events as an independent artist. Mordechai is one of Jewish music's hottest and most gifted performers. He also teaches music at HANC. He has been described as having the "ability to do things with his voice no one else in this business can". As an artist, Shapiro takes pride in the fact that his songs are message-oriented, “In every song that I sing, there is a distinct message of positivity and joy that I aspire to promote through my music.” ____________________________________________________________ This episode is brought to you by Touro University! Rabbi Jacobson will discuss the following topics: Chassidus Applied to Lech Lecha and Zayin CheshvanWhat is the meaning of the statement that Parshas Noach is a melancholy week, but the end of the week is joyous due to the birth of Abraham; but the true joyous week is Lech Lecha, when we live with Abraham all week long? What can Abraham teach us today about dealing with our confusing times? What do we learn from the 7th of Cheshvan when the last Jews returned home after the holidays? What did Malkizedek do wrong by blessing Avraham before blessing G-d? Is our connection to the Patriarchs physical or spiritual? Chassidus applied to BereishisDoes Bereishis barah Elokim mean that in the beginning concealment (from the name Elokim) was created? What is the connection between the ten sefiros and the ten maamaros? Are there maamarim that explain the rakiya? Why was it necessary and what practical lessons do we take from it? Chassidus applied to NoachWhat exactly happened during and after the flood for Hashem to change the rule and now allow the consumption of meat? Are we able to quell our fears about global warming by remembering G-d's covenant of the rainbow? If the flood eradicated evil from the world, how is it possible that Noach's offspring could sin and build the Tower of Babel? Why was it a sin to build the Tower of Babel? What are your thoughts on the Miami Boys Choir going viral on social media? Should we vote for a Jewish candidate for governor who is married to a non-Jew? Can someone with severe PTSD use a phone on Shabbos?

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman and news editor Amy Spiro join host Amanda Borschel-Dan. A tragic update to open the program: 18-year-old Sergeant Noa Lazar was killed last night when a gunman opened fire in a shooting attack at the Shuafat checkpoint in East Jerusalem. Lazar was a member of the Military Police's Erez battalion. A second casualty, a civilian guard, is still in serious condition at Hadassah Medical Center. Berman brings us the latest twists in the potential maritime border deal with Lebanon. The protests in Iran over the death of Mahsa Amini have entered a fourth straight week and sparked solidarity events all over the globe. Berman describes how the international community can support Iranian women. Spiro brings us the fascinating tale of the Miami Boys Choir -- who, incidentally, are not based in Florida at all. Discussed articles include: Soldier killed in East Jerusalem shooting identified as 18-year-old Noa Lazar Testing of gas pipeline set to start at Karish drilling site amid Hezbollah threats ‘Not afraid anymore': Iran protests enter 4th week in defiance of deadly crackdown Israelis rally in Jerusalem in solidarity with Iranian women protesters The Miami Boys Choir churned out generations of child stars. When the song appeared on social media, that was one thing. But, when it appeared last week in Selichos and again in Rashi in this week's Parsha, I could no longer ignore the topic. What is this song about and what is the Torah response to its recent explosion on social media?
In the last couple months, the Miami Boys Choir—a pop group comprising Orthodox Jewish kids that's been around since the 1970s—began inexplicably trending on TikTok. Since mid-August, every video uploaded has been heard more than 100,000 times; often that number is over a million, or close to it. But the reasoning behind the sudden fame is harder to discern. Are teenagers actually getting into Orthodox pop? Or is this just an ironic fad destined to fade by Hanukkah? The hosts at Bonjour Chai wanted to dig deeper. They learned the choir actually has roots in Canada, when director Yerachmiel Begun was studying in a yeshiva in Toronto and produced three albums with what was then called the Toronto Boys Choir. He subsequently moved to Miami, formed a choir there and began releasing albums under that title—even after eventually settling in New York. The group has since become a powerhouse in Jewish music, releasing a string of hits over the years and launching the careers of many Jewish singers. The hosts dissect the trend among themselves, then invite on Mordechai Levovitz, a singer in the choir who wound up on Broadway and is now the clinical director for JQY, an organization that supports and empowers Jewish queer youth. After that, by popular demand, you'll hear more contributions to our Sermon Slam, this time from Rabbi Elyse Goldstein, Rabbi Josh Schwartz, Rabbi Dan Moskovitz, Rabbi Ilana Krygier Lapides and Rabbi Shalom Schachter. Credits Bonjour Chai is hosted by Avi Finegold, Ilana Zackon and David Sklar. Zachary Kauffman is the producer and editor. Michael Fraiman is the executive producer. Our theme music is by Socalled. The show is a co-production from The Jewish Learning Lab and The CJN, and is distributed by The CJN Podcast Network. The Atlantic's Yair Rosenberg is one of the most prominent journalists on the planet covering global antisemitism. He's also an excellent recording artist in the Jewish music space. How do these two things fit together? As Ari and Yair discuss together, this mix is deeply emblematic of the current moment in Jewish, American, and even world history -- both fraught with existential danger and brimming with creative and moral possibility. On the latest episode of Good Faith Effort, they unpack what this means together, discussing everything from Jewish historian Salo Baron; the Biblical Hebrew word for “Passover”; Lil Wayne; the Miami Boys Choir; whether Jews are a race; the place of Israel in the Western imagination; normie cultural sensibilities; Yair's musical influences; singability in Jewish music; and much more! Aside from the Rabbi's Sons discussed in Part 1 of this miniseries, the 1960's saw the first music groups in Ohr Chadash, Pirchei and the London School of Jewish Song. From Israel came Chaim Banet and Jo Amar, the latter a pioneer of Morroccan Jewish music. No less important than the performers, the production, composition and arrangements were handled by architects of Jewish music Suki & Ding, Sheya Mendlowitz, Yisroel Lamm and later Moshe Laufer, Mona Rosenblum and Yossi Green. The 1970's saw the new sounds of Diaspora Yeshiva Band and Dudu Fisher, bringing Jewish music to ever wider audiences. Abie Rottenberg commenced his illustrious career this decade with Dveykus and the soon to be crowned king of Jewish music Mordechai Ben David burst on to the scene as well. Capitalizing on their earlier involvement with Pirchei-JEP, Rivie Schwebel and Ali Scharf collaborated once again with a series of albums of Schwebel, Scharf & Levine. Original home to the Miami Boys Choir and to the Jewish owned Miami Heat, Palm Beach County also has the largest concentrated Jewish population in the world outside of Israel. Though attractive as the sunny alternative to the harsh New York winter, the Miami Jewish community developed independently building infrastructure and institutions. It was in the post war era that things began to take off. The visionary Rabbi Alexander Gross was one of the great architects of the community's growth. Other early leaders of the community included Rabbis Aryeh Rottman, Berel Wein, along with the early shluchim Rav Avraham & Rivka Korf and later the Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Leibel Schapiro. The Yeshiva with Rabbi Yochanan Zweig at the helm has greatly impacted the community as well. Yet through the decades Miami had been famous for hosting great Jewish leaders who vacationed there during the winter months. This phenomenon would have a long lasting and unique impact on the community's growth along with the exposure to the diversity of the entire Jewish people. With Larry King, Myer Lansky and Ron Dermer all making appearances as well, the story of the Jews of South Florida is another glorious chapter in American Jewish History.
