There's been more setbacks in reducing the number of New Zealand children living in poverty. A recent Ministry of Social Development report shows almost 169,000 children were living in material hardship last year, up from 160,000 the year before. The report says rising expenses have significantly lifted hardship since 2023. Children's Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad, who's set to finish up in the role, says children in poverty haven't been made a priority since 2022. "After the Child Poverty Reduction Act was passed in 2018, actually, we did see a measurable decrease in child material hardship, for example. But then from 2022, what we have been seeing is that over that time is that there has been a measurable increase in child poverty." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Leader Winston Peters announced the party has accepted Nash's offer to quit. Jones says Nash did an honourable thing - to avoid distracting from the election. Federal CIO Greg Barbaccia is stepping down

Greg Barbaccia is stepping down as federal CIO and leaving government at the end of August, he said in an email to the CIO Council Tuesday. “I'm writing to share that I've made the difficult decision to leave government, and my time as Federal CIO is coming to an end,” Barbaccia wrote to CIOs on the council in his email, obtained by FedScoop. Barbaccia, who joined the Trump administration as its top IT official in January 2025, said his last day in the role will be Aug. 31. Barbaccia's departure comes just months after he brought on former Department of Education CIO Thomas Flagg to be his deputy. Flagg would be the default acting official with Barbaccia's departure, a government chief information officer told FedScoop on the condition of anonymity to be more candid. As federal CIO, Barbaccia has also served as the federal chief AI officer of the U.S. government, playing a pivotal role in shaping AI policy, oversight and adoption across federal agencies. The Defense Innovation Unit is undergoing a major reorganization effort that will overhaul and collapse its operational portfolios from seven to three technology priorities “where speed, scale, and lethality intersect,” two sources told DefenseScoop on Monday. One senior defense official and one defense official familiar with this realignment said the Pentagon would likely reveal DIU's near-term plans and new internal structure publicly this week. The officials requested anonymity to speak freely ahead of the Defense Department's official, forthcoming announcement. But they suggested that this shake-up and reset is intended to concentrate DIU's experts and resources on a smaller, more focused set of real-world problem areas so the hub can deliver outcome-driven, reportable combat power to the U.S. military at faster and less expensive rates. DIU's recently installed director under the second Trump administration, Owen West, initiated the reorg. The three new portfolios and priority topics that the unit will be structured around, according to the two officials, are drones and autonomous warfare, kill webs, and "10x" technologies. Peter explains why he is stepping down as a Cardano DRep and why, in his view, the current governance process is not working well enough to justify the time, energy, and scrutiny it demands. He walks through the practical reasons behind that decision, including lobbying for votes, unclear conflict-of-interest boundaries, public backlash, fatigue, and the growing burden of proposal review. The episode also looks at the broader governance environment around Intersect, treasury withdrawals, and the post-Catalyst landscape. Rather than writing off governance entirely, Peter argues that Cardano's model still has room to improve, but that most people are better off avoiding the DRep role until the process becomes more sustainable and easier to navigate.Key Takeaways:- Peter is stepping down as a Cardano DRep at the end of the month and is asking current delegates to consider moving to another active DRep.- He argues that constant lobbying, direct messages, and social pressure have made governance feel unhealthy and difficult to navigate fairly.- Conflict-of-interest lines are too blurry for someone involved across multiple roles in the ecosystem, which often pushes him toward abstaining rather than voting.- The time burden has grown far beyond what many participants originally expected, especially after the shift from Catalyst-style funding to heavier on-chain and Intersect proposal review.- He believes the current model does not properly compensate DReps for the hours of review, voting, and public accountability involved.- Despite stepping away, he still expects Cardano governance to evolve and improve over time, just not in its current form.Links & References:- Peter Bui · Cardano DRep — Informed Voting, Public Rationales: https://link.learncardano.io/vG2x1zWebsite: https://link.learncardano.io/bQ68RcX/Twitter: https://link.learncardano.io/3a1QtvDisclaimer: This content is for educational purposes only. This Episode is hosted by Chris Maffeo and brought to you by MAFFEO DRINKS.In this episode, Heather Greene shares her journey from Scotland's Scotch Malt Whisky Society and William Grant & Sons to founding Milam & Greene in Texas, drawn by the chance to explore how the Texas climate shapes bourbon and rye.She discusses what's changed in whiskey: broader, newer audiences and the need to keep “Whiskey 101” welcoming despite online gatekeeping and rigid rules. We talk about blending as a once-taboo trend, climate-driven aging experiments, and a new Provisions bourbon designed for easy, social drinking.Heather Greene recently stepped back from her role as CEO and now sits on the board while consulting for brands as a strategist and Master Blender. The conversation covers the shrinking playbook for craft spirits, the pivot from local-first to national-first out of necessity, how press access becomes survival, and why new consumer waves keep asking the same questions the industry is tired of answering.
