The MAFFEO DRINKS Podcast is a leading drinks business podcast, listened to in 120 countries worldwide. Not the conference version. Honest conversations about how the industry actually works, from the bar, not the boardroom. This Episode is hosted by Chris Maffeo and brought to you by MAFFEO DRINKS.In this episode, Heather Greene shares her journey from Scotland's Scotch Malt Whisky Society and William Grant & Sons to founding Milam & Greene in Texas, drawn by the chance to explore how the Texas climate shapes bourbon and rye.She discusses what's changed in whiskey: broader, newer audiences and the need to keep “Whiskey 101” welcoming despite online gatekeeping and rigid rules. We talk about blending as a once-taboo trend, climate-driven aging experiments, and a new Provisions bourbon designed for easy, social drinking.Heather Greene recently stepped back from her role as CEO and now sits on the board while consulting for brands as a strategist and Master Blender. The conversation covers the shrinking playbook for craft spirits, the pivot from local-first to national-first out of necessity, how press access becomes survival, and why new consumer waves keep asking the same questions the industry is tired of answering. It's a field-level account of what the drinks ecosystem actually looks like when the wolves come back.Timestamps:00:00 Welcome and Introductions00:26 Heather's Whiskey Journey01:18 Why Texas Whiskey03:12 Whiskey Industry Shifts06:29 Keeping Whiskey Welcoming10:37 Local vs National Strategy19:29 Pandemic Pivot Playbook24:00 No Playbook for Survival26:16 Leading Through Uncertainty27:19 Humility and Curiosity Win27:50 Stepping Down as CEO29:28 Whiskey Planning Horizons31:08 Betting on Blends32:50 Climate-Driven Whiskey34:47 Market Boots On36:58 Social Terroir Explained41:33 Tradition Versus Creativity46:22 House of Whiskeys Strategy47:48 Provisions This Episode is hosted by Chris Maffeo and brought to you by MAFFEO DRINKS. Josh, who runs acquisitions consulting office JL Davis Enterprises, shares his framework for growth, focusing on people, systems, and performance, and offers advice on navigating the personal journey of exiting a business. Learn how accounting professionals can help clients prioritize profit and prepare for successful transitions. In This Episode: 00:00 Welcome & Josh's Entrepreneurial Journey 04:00 Impact of Accounting on Valuation 08:09 Key Metrics & Valuation Thresholds 12:09 Consulting: People, Systems, Performance 14:56 Stepping Down as CEO: Identity Shift 19:44 Rebuilding Identity & Entrepreneurial Scorecards 23:55 Scaling Framework & Consulting Services 28:51 Succession Planning & Building a Legacy 33:25 Spousal Business Partnership & Work-Life Integration 38:20 Lessons for Children & Gratitude 41:16 Key Takeaways & Final Thoughts 46:28 Resources & Outro Key Takeaways: Prioritize clean financial records to enhance business valuation and streamline due diligence processes. Implement a clear scaling framework focused on people, systems, performance, growth, and legacy for sustainable business expansion. Develop a personalized scorecard with essential metrics to help founders delegate and avoid micromanagement. Address the personal and identity challenges associated with exiting a business by planning for life post-sale. Integrate work and family life through intentional annual planning and anchor calendars to prevent burnout and ensure personal well-being. Featured Quotes: "Revenue will solve most problems. Just keep growing the business, and everything will kind of work out from there." — Josh Davis "When you build something up from the ground up and you put everything into it, it's a challenging thing to go through and go to market." — Josh Davis "If you stay on, it's kind of like giving your baby up for adoption and living in the same house." — Josh Davis Behind the Story: Josh Davis recounts the early days of his logistics business, co-founded with his wife a week after their honeymoon. Initially focused solely on rapid growth, the prospect of selling became real with his wife's pregnancy. The exit process proved difficult, emphasizing the overlooked importance of clean financials. This experience shaped his current work in acquisitions and consulting, where he helps founders build businesses with clear metrics, strong teams, and a defined legacy, avoiding the identity crisis he faced post-exit. Top 3 Highlights: Accounting's Impact on Valuation: Messy financials hinder business sales; clean books, clear metrics, and normalized EBITDA are crucial for high valuations. The Exit Identity Shift: Stepping down as CEO can lead to a loss of identity, making post-exit personal planning essential for founders. January 13, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 78 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Tuesday afternoon emergency episode, Alex Kozora and I get right into discussing Mike Tomlin deciding to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers just one day after the team lost to the Houston Texans in Monday night Wild Card playoff game. Alex and I go over the statements that Tomlin and Steelers team president Art Rooney II released on Tuesday. We also discuss Tomlin's remaining year on his contract and how that presumably means the Steelers still retain his rights until at least through the 2026 season. We discuss what Tomlin might do next and whether he will indeed go into television for at least the next year. Will the Steelers now make wholesale changes to their coaching staff with a new incoming head coach? Does Tomlin stepping down on Tuesday mean that QB Aaron Rodgers definitely won't be back in 2026? We address those two questions and several others during this emergency podcast. As you would expect, Alex and I look at several potential candidates the Steelers are likely to consider to be their next head coach. We also discuss if the Steelers head coach position is a desirable one right now. Later in this show, Alex and discuss how Tomlin will be best remembered during his time as the Steelers head coach. We also look ahead at the various ways the Steelers do things might change with a new head coach coming in. This 45-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted above. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

My guest today is Reed Hastings, the co-founder and former longtime CEO of Netflix. Netflix is an example of two ideas that everyone talks about, but are extremely hard to do in practice. The first is finding a simple idea and taking it extraordinarily seriously. Reed talks about how even the DVD business was nothing more than a stepping stone toward streaming, which they envisioned from the company's inception in 1997. The second is talent density, and what it actually takes to set and sustain an exceptionally high bar over decades as a company grows. We talk about how those ideas shaped Netflix's culture and strategy, what Reed learned from mistakes like Qwikster, and why Netflix treated content like a venture portfolio. We also discuss Reed's work today. He shares how he's thinking about AI, what he's learned from serving on the boards of Microsoft, Meta, Anthropic, and Bloomberg, and what excites him about Powder Mountain, the ski resort he acquired after Netflix. Please enjoy my conversation with Reed Hastings. For the full show notes, transcript, and links to mentioned content, check out the episode page here. ----- This episode is brought to you by Ramp.
