Ottawa based singer-songwriter Lynn Miles joins us on Episode 650 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about "TumbleWeedyWorld", her sixteenth album in a career that has to date yielded more than 900 songs and numerous awards including a Juno, and multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards. One of Canada's finest songwriters, recordings by Lynn Miles consistently feature prominently in 'Best of the Year' lists and readers polls. It's a fabulous conversation and although we can only share part of the interview with you in this episode, it is definitely worth checking out - especially to hear what Lynn has to say about songwriting and the challenges of making a living as a musician in post pandemic times. As always, we wrap up the rest of the episode with more of the latest new releases. This time around they are all by Canadian artists, and we feature new music from Claire Coupland, Dave Gunning, Jason Wilson, Steve Dawson, Colleen Brown and Jessica Rhaye. Enjoy! If you like the artists you hear on this show and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music, and then you'll really make a difference to their income at a time when it is becoming much more difficult to make a living as a musician. Ottawa based singer-songwriter Lynn Miles has written more than 900 songs in her career so far – a staggering amount, but one that reflects the level of commitment a consummate artist makes to her calling. One of Canada's finest songwriters, Lynn has picked up numerous awards including a Juno, and multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, and her albums consistently feature prominently in Best of the Year lists and readers polls. Lynn joins us on Folk Roots Radio to chat about her latest album – album number sixteen, “TumbleWeedyWorld”, an excellent new recording with a warm acoustic folk feel that at times almost dips into bluegrass. The album features ten songs that reflect on the uncertainty and fragility of life, and the obstacles (the tumbleweeds) that can destabilize and destroy our intimate relationships. It's a fabulous conversation with a special emphasis on the art of songwriting, and the challenges of making a living as a musician in post pandemic times. As well being as a fine songwriter, Lynn Miles is also a vocal coach, producer and public speaker – in fact, Lynn spoke movingly on the issue of Musicians and Mental Health at Folk Alliance in 2019. For more information about the music of Lynn Miles, visit https://lynnmiles.ca. Photo: Balfour Photo. Music: Jay Aymar “Overtime” (Theme) from “Overtime” (2013, Self), Lynn Miles “Night Owl”, “Highway 105”, “Johnny Without June” and “Gold In The Middle” from “Tumbleweedyworld” (2023, True North Records). Whizbangers and swizzle sticks. Season two is really rocketing out of the mental Cape Canaveral of our mindspheres. I'm so thankful to have had some insanely talented guests so far and episode 4 (4 already?! DANG SON!) is NO different. But also different. Because yeah. We don't want to paint people with a broad brush here in Graventown. Broad brushes just leave more cleanup. Boy, I've really painted myself into a corner. Anyhoozleby...the next guest is not only a 613 pal and someone who I've collaborated with musically in different parts of Canada, but someone who crushes crowds in every venue she graces. Alexandra Sullivan is a Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Fueled by a lifelong love of poetry and music, she encapsulates specific moments and emotions in her original songs. With moving melodies and imaginative lyrics, she can break an audiences' heart while simultaneously filling them with hope. Her style blends various folk, pop and indie styles. Alexandra has headlined the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, played Marvest City Folk Fest in Ottawa, and shared stages with both Craig Cardiff and Lynn Miles. A live performance of her latest single, Little Hope (2020), was featured in Season 11 of Ottawa's Shot in the Dark Sessions.CATCH ALEXANDRA AND MYSELF LIVE AT RED BIRD ON FRIDAY NOV 18!!UPCOMING SHOWS:NOV 18 - RED BIRD LIVEBank St South - Ottawa, ON(w Alexandra Sullivan)Find tickets for the show at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/graven-and-the-new-band-with-alexandra-sullivan-tickets-407006355967#AlexandraSullivan#GraventownPodcast#Gravencanada#GravenRedBird Catch me in a town near you by visting my website to see where I'm playing. It's been 30 years since Lynn Miles (https://lynnmilesmusic.ca) released her debut full-length album, Chalk this one up to the Moon. Last year, in the midst of the pandemic, she released her 15th album, We'll Look for Stars. In between, she had big record contracts, publishing deals, and toured all over the place. The stress and grind of it all almost killed her. Fortunately, she was able to channel a lot of her struggles into her magnificent songs. She's come out of it with a highly-respected catalogue of work, a number of high-profile awards, and the respect and admiration of music fans and fellow musicians. She's also become an advocate for better mental health among musicians and greater awareness of mental illness. more info and music credits: https://wp.me/pcKqe1-3Q

It is, indeed, beginning to look a lot like Christmas, so it’s time to sound like it as well, as we continue to roll out some holiday music that doesn’t suck. We’ve also got some musical gift-giving options as we listen to some of the best albums of the year, and somehow, I got off on a tangent and listened to a whole pile of amazing songs by some super talented women.
Ever year, it’s my goal to prove that not all Christmas music is cheesy and terrible. Some of it is even pretty great. We present some strong evidence to prove the point today. We’ve also got new additions to the amazing Willie P Bennett Legacy Project and a few upcoming shows to preview.

This week marks the return of Fred Eaglesmith, and the Breakout West festival and Western Canadian Music Awards, and there’s plenty in there to play, celebrate, and prepare for. Also, to balance out all that joy, some songs from a darker, lonelier place.

A couple of exciting events to celebrate today. First, the BBQ and Blues festival wraps up today, and I’ve finally made it out there after a couple of years of laziness, and I was really impressed, so a celebration of some great rockin’ blues to kick things off. Then, a lady I’ve been dying to talk to and see play in this city for a long, long time, Lynn Miles not only made it to Winnipeg, but came down to UMFM for a great live session, which we get to hear today!
