On yesterday's show, Keith Teare mourned the scarcity of utopian thinking in Silicon Valley. But maybe Keith was looking on the wrong coast. Robert Wolcott, who teaches at the University of Chicago and is the chair of the World Innovation Network, recognizes the value of utopian idealism in his co-authored new book, Proximity: How Coming Breakthroughs in Just-in-Time Transform Business, Society and Life. As he told me, the just-in-time tech revolution of generative AI, 3D printing, lab-grown meats, renewable energy, and virtual reality is going to change everything. But what Wolcott can't predict, he confesses, is whether all this radically disruptive new tech will lead us to utopia or to dystopia. Robert C. Wolcott is Adjunct Professor of Innovation at the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago, and Adjunct Professor of Executive Education at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. From 2010 – 2019, he served as Clinical Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Kellogg. Wolcott won Teacher of the Year from Kellogg's EMBA program in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017. He's co-founder and chair of The World Innovation Network (TWIN), a global community of nearly 4,000 innovation and growth leaders from over 30 countries and across sectors (business, government, the arts, academia, defense). TWIN gathers 400 delegates for TWIN Global each year in Chicago to explore the future, in addition to smaller gatherings and online sessions. The objective is to build trusted relationships across sectors. Wolcott is an angel investor in over 20 companies including crowd funding leader Indiegogo, tech-enabled coaching and culture development platform Abroad.io, student loan innovator Lumni, digital education leader Kiddom, transaction security technology firm Magic Cube, digital mental health platform Silver Cloud Health and ClearCare Online (acquired by Battery Ventures), international art show, EXPO Chicago and MommyDaddyMe.com, a Hong Kong-based online capability development platform for children and their families across Asia. Wolcott holds a BA, European and Chinese History; and an MS and Ph.D., Industrial Engineering & Management Science, Northwestern University. Wolcott is a board member of Clareo, a foresight and growth strategy consultancy serving global corporations, and Abroad.io, a tech-enabled human transformation platform. Wolcott serves on advisory boards for H-Farm, the leading technology ecosystem in Italy, and the Open Innovation Lab of Norway. He serves on the board of Cure Blindness (Himalayan Cataract Project), a global non-profit that has restored sight to nearly one million people in Asia, Africa and Latin America. He is a regular contributor for Forbes on the impact of technology on business, society and humanity. His book, Grow From Within: Mastering Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation (McGraw-Hill, 2010) has been published in Chinese and Japanese. Wolcott's work appears in MIT Sloan Management Review, strategy+business, The Harvard Business Review (online), The Wall Street Journal, Advertising Age, Business Week, The Financial Times (European Edition), The New York Times and numerous overseas publications.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. After a long weekend of Cube drafts, Andy doesn't have time to edit a proper episode of the show, so instead he piles four of his buddies into his cozy little basement studio to talk about a recent rotisserie draft of his Bun Magic Cube. Which deck came out on top? Are newer, more committal and synergistic cards pulling their weight? If Andy finally adds Scrabbling Claws is everyone going to draft it and put it in their decks like they say they will? Unfortunately there are no timestamps for this episode, nor is there a cards mentioned page, as it is unedited. It might sound unbelievable, but we're closer to 2050 than 1980. Oy. And though the 80s may be ancient, for some of us, they're alive in our souls. How about returning to the 1980s, with its parachute pants, aerobic workouts, and ridiculous hair when the world population was just under 4.5 billion, and the yearly cost to attend Harvard was just 10 thousand dollars? What was special about the 1980s? Well, in 1980, the Rubik's Cube debuted internationally. (By the way, originally, the Rubik's Cube was named “Magic Cube”.) In 1982, the first emoticons were invented. In 1985, the first Nintendo home game console is launched in North America. In 1988, Stephen Hawking's “A Brief History of Time” was published. In 1989 “The Simpsons” aired. Yup, it's the longest-running American sitcom. Interested? Then let's find out more about things that happened in the 80s! Learn more about your ad choices. On the heels of last week's episode, wherein Andy realized that his 3 drop slot is perhaps inappropriately high-value in the face of removal, and in response to some grumbling from his local playgroup about reactive strategies not being viable because of there being too many recursive threats, the boys are talking through 18 different three drop creatures Andy is considering adding. All of these creatures are more ”Baneslayer” than ”Mulldrifter” with the goal of making removal a bit better in the environment. To inform his decisions Andy polled his local playgroup, the MTG Cube Talk Discord, and Twitter about which cards they perceived to be the most powerful, least powerful, most fun, and least fun. Some of the results were surprising and throughout this episode Andy and Anthony go into detail about how to parse them. Over 100 million Rubik's Cubes were sold in just a few short years at the onset of the 1980s - a phenomenon kickstarted on 19th May, 1974, when Hungarian Professor of Architecture Ernő Rubik supposedly created the prototype for his ‘Magic Cube'. It took him a month to solve himself - a feat which seems unimpressive in a world where the current record stands at under six seconds. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Ideal Toys saw the unlikely potential in the unprecedented ‘spacial logic toy' Rubik had created; reveal just how many knockoffs and spinoffs were generated by its incredible success; and explain why there are 519 quintillion reasons to be sceptical about this being a truly significant date in Rubik's history… Further Reading: • ‘Rubik's Cube - A History of the 1980s Puzzle' (ThoughtCo, 2019): https://www.thoughtco.com/history-of-the-rubiks-cube-1779400 • ‘On this Day, in 1974: the “Magic Cube” was invented by Ernő Rubik' (Kafkadesk, 2021): https://kafkadesk.org/2021/05/19/on-this-day-in-1974-the-magic-cube-was-invented-by-erno-rubik/ • ‘Rubik's Cube Commercials through the years!' You could call it the Swiss Army knife of the kitchen: bouillon is a handy ingredient, whether it comes as bottled brown gloop, or a cube wrapped up in shiny foil like a tiny present. Today, cooks around the world rely on this secret ingredient to add depth, flavor, and umami to their cooking. It wasn’t always so; like many of today’s packaged shortcuts, condensed bouillon got its start in the 1800s, when nutrition science was just taking off. How did the (mistaken) discoveries of a German chemist pave the way for these umami bombs—and what is umami anyway? How did bouillon brands like Maggi and Knorr become part of national dishes as far afield as Nigeria, India, and Mexico? And how did the invention of these early "essences of meat" lead to the creation of the love-it-or-hate-it spreads Marmite and Vegemite? Listen in now for all that, plus a matriarchal subterranean master race with electrical superpowers! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Please take a few minutes to let us know what you're testing in your cube from the new set, or if you're not keeping your paper cube up-to-date through isolation, what you would be testing, under better circumstances. On this episode, Andy and Anthony are talking about power creep as it applies to cube design. They do a pack 1, pick 1 from Swervestar's The First 10 Years of Magic Cube, of which the owner graciously blessed us with a photograph of a real, physical pack. They discuss how the normal pattern of adding new cards to your cube and cutting the worst ones may lead to an unintentional power increase in an environment over time, how difficult it is to be critical of all the cards in your cube it slowly shifts and changes, how Cube captures all of the best aspects of the early years of limited Magic, how the dedicated Commander products changed Commander as a format, what Magic has in common Mario Kart, whether “fun creep” exists, and Arena “Turbo Draft”.
