When it comes to reaching consumers in China, she suggests that foreign KPI's, benchmarks and even best-selling product lines are left behind. In this episode of The Voice of Retail podcast, I sit down with fellow RETHINK Retail Top 100 Global Influencer Ashley Dudarenok to talk about the vast and digitally-centred niches within China's retail market. Ashley sheds light on how the pandemic has shaped the retail marketing space, from ageing populations to revenge consumption. We explore digital marketing calendars that are oriented around multi-day festivals, livestreaming in retail and insights on trends that might cross over to North American markets.Ashley notes that large markets like that of China's, can be a double-edged sword. Topics Discussed and Key Points:●      How Gang Lu became the founder of the premier tech media in the country●      The transition from a competitive to a collaborative startup environment in China●      The connection between changing family dynamics and the rise of innovation and entrepreneurship in China●      The business of media in China●      All about BEYOND Tech Expo 2021 in Macau●      The future of the 996 working hour system●      Gang Lu on the U.S.-China trade war●      The current state of blockchain in China Episode Summary:Today on The Negotiation, we speak with tech influencer Gang Lu, Founder and CEO of TechNode.com. Formerly known as MOBINODE.com, Technode.com today is “the leading bilingual tech media in China covering startups and large listed companies, entrepreneurial community, and angel/VC investment activities.” Gang Lu is also the Co-Founder of OpenWeb.asia Workgroup, a blogging network focused on the Asian web industry and enhancing “the intercommunication of local Internet markets.”Gang Lu speaks to the parallels between the relatively recent relaxing of the top-down cultural dynamic in the Chinese family and workplace as the key that sparked the level of entrepreneurship that we see in the country today. With the government now encouraging the growth of new tech startups, Chinese society has become ripe for innovation that, according to Gang Lu, is only beginning. The world of media is obviously very different in China than it is in the West. For one, copyright is not enforced at nearly the same level, leading to a lot of outright plagiarism between companies. Advertisements are also valued much lower in China. Instead, to stay profitable, media companies rely heavily on sponsored articles. It of course follows that since articles can be commissioned by outside parties, the integrity of the information being published is often questionable. With the rise of the tech industry in Asia, TechNode, in collaboration with the Macao International Grand Events Promotion Association, is organizing the first two-day BEYOND International Technology Innovation Expo at the Venetian Macau on June 17, 2021. Gang Lu believed the time had come to shine a spotlight on Asia-based tech startups and other companies at an Asian venue instead of in the West where most of these events are usually held. Calling Macau “the Vegas of Asia”, he pinpointed the Venetian as the perfect place to kick off the first BEYOND Expo. Finally, Gang Lu speaks on the 996 culture, the U.S.-China trade war, and blockchain. To these three developing topics, he adopts a wait-and-see mindset, saying that China does not currently seem to be budging in its big-picture economic priorities despite (or maybe because of) the ongoing pandemic, increasing global dependence on digital solutions, and the transition of power in the U.S. Key Quotes:“I think, before 2011, you didn't see that many startups. But after 3G took off, suddenly you saw the mobile market booming.” “If we look at the global tech space, there are so many new companies that are not in the States or Europe. They are in China and other Asian countries. We need not just an event, but a platform where people can go every year to showcase their technologies and innovations in Asia.” “Why is China moving so fast? I think China, for many reasons, is able to open the market to adopt new applications and infrastructures like 5G.”

Podcast’in ilk kısmında Colin’in sıradışı yaşamına bakıyoruz. Alibaba’nın her yıl bekarlar gününde kırdığı satış rekorları, ülkelerin yıllık e-ticaret hacminden fazla. Perakendeden lojistiğe, ödeme sistemlerinden bulut bilişime onlarca farklı alanda Dünya’nın en değerli şirketlerinden biri durumunda. Yaptığı 350’den fazla yatırımla, Çin’in startup ekosistemine yön veren iki şirketinden biri.Çin’in kapalı bir toplum olması sebebiyle, Alibaba’nın bu başarıya rekabetten uzak, zorlanmadan ulaştığı gibi bir düşünce var. Welcome to East West Hurricane! 🌪We update you on the most essential news from Asia in tech, media, and business—the things you need to know that you probably haven’t heard in Western media.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram! ⚡️India’s Ban of Chinese Apps Goes One Step FurtherAfter banning 59 Chinese Mobile apps last month, the Indian government has gone one step further by announcing a new list of Chinese mobile apps to be banned. This week, China’s largest search engine Baidu and social media platform Weibo were blocked and removed from app stores in India. This brings the total number of banned Chinese apps to 106. The first list of 59 banned Chinese apps came out on June 29, then a second list of 47 Chinese apps came out on July 27. The actual delisting and blocking of apps has been staggered over the last two months. We can expect this kind of government policy to continue so long as political tensions remain high between China and India.East West Trends = Mukbang 🍲Have you heard of Mukbang? It’s a popular online trend where people record videos of themselves eating large quantities of food. Mukbang first began in Korea, where the word translates into ‘eating broadcast’ and has grown into a huge global phenomenon over the last few years. The most viewed ‘Mukbang’ video on Youtube has over 400 Million views and is of two young Korean girls eating a variety of food dishes.Mukbang performers are a new type of food influencer. They’re geared towards a modern need - the videos generally target young, single people who live alone and are looking for companionship. Mukbangers use livestreams to showcase their eating and often promote food products during their shows. This mini-documentary from Technode shows the life of a professional Mukbang influencer in China who has ten million fans and several partnerships with major food brands. While Mukbang is now more widespread in the West amongst food influencers, the trend was definitely born in the East. And whenever you have a type of content that generates an audience of millions, people can always find ways to monetise the millions of eyeballs. Tencent to Create New Streaming Giant Through Merger 🎞Tencent is leading discussions to merge Huya and Douyu, two of China’s largest video game streaming platforms. Tencent currently owns a 37% stake in Huya and 38% of Douyu. Combining Huya and Douyu would create a streaming company with 300 million combined users and $10 Billion in market value. So having a Huya-Douyu merger, which is the equivalent of creating a Chinese Twitch, would allow Tencent to strengthen their position in the world of video.Tencent is the leading Chinese company when it comes to entertainment, with the largest investment in gaming (Riot Games, Epic Games, Supercell, etc.), social media (WeChat), and music (Warner, Universal, Spotify, etc.). One of their biggest competitors is Bytedance, the company that owns Douyin (TikTok’s Chinese equivalent). In the quest for the attention of Chinese consumers looking for entertainment, Bytedance apps are Tencent’s biggest competitor. A merger to create a streaming giant between Huya and Douyu would be a chance for Tencent to fight back against their rival Bytedance. This is a public episode. Show #697   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 14th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CHINA’S JANUARY EV SALES SLUMP "China reported a double-digit decrease in electric vehicle (EV) sales for a sixth consecutive month in January, and warned that the Covid-19 outbreak was weighing on automakers already under significant pressure." reports Technode.com: "January sales of new energy vehicle (NEVs), which include all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars, plunged 54.4% from a year earlier to 44,000 units, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said Thursday. The association mainly attributed the sales decline to the week-long Spring Festival holiday, which began earlier than usual this year. The number of working days in January was five days fewer than the last year. The outbreak had a limited impact on the market in January as Spring Festival historically produces a lull in sales, though CAAM warned that it would have a bigger near-term effect on the country’s auto industry than the 2003 SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak. The outbreak has also brought the entire auto supply chain to a halt, triggering widespread part shortages, as local manufacturers were forced to extend downtime during an extended holiday.   https://technode.com/2020/02/14/china-january-ev-sales-2020/   TESLA BECOMES ONE OF CHINA’S TOP LOCAL ELECTRIC CAR PRODUCERS IN JANUARY "January was a big month for Tesla’s Giga Shanghai, with Made-in-China Model 3 production hitting its stride following trial manufacturing runs at the end of 2019. Reports indicate that Giga Shanghai was able to build over 2,600 units of the Made-in-China Model 3 in January, despite the company stopping operations for the Chinese New Year, and later, the coronavirus outbreak." writes Joey for Teslarati: "With a rate of 2,625 Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3s produced before the Lunar New Year holiday on January 25th, it appears that Tesla was indeed producing about 1,000 units of the all-electric sedan per week when the year started."   The Top 5 is BYD, BAIC/BJEV, SAIC VW, GAC and Tesla.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-made-in-china-model-3-giga-shanghai/   Tomorrow on a Saturday Special we'll hear from our man in China, it's former guest Rupert Mitchell. WLTP-ratified range of up to 190 miles, with new Technik, Sport and S line specification options that sit below the most lavishly equipped Launch Edition. Its battery has a 71 kWh capacity, and delivers its energy via a newly calibrated drivetrain incorporating an electric motor on each axle with a combined output of 230kW.   Director of Audi UK Andrew Doyle. “Our research has shown that on a daily basis many prospective buyers will cover significantly less than the 190-mile maximum achievable in the e-tron 50 on a full charge, so for them this more accessible yet no less accomplished variant makes perfect sense. It is also notable for introducing attractive new specification options, including the ever popular S line, that will roll out across the e-tron range in the longer term.”   The Launch Edition also incorporates a comfort remote preconditioning system, which is a higher functioning version of the remote preconditioning system fitted as standard elsewhere in the range. Where that enables the driver to use the myAudi app to remotely activate the primary heating and ventilation system so that it reaches the temperature that was programmed when the vehicle was last driven, the more advanced version also permits remote adjustment of the desired temperature and can also control seat heating and ventilation, steering wheel heating (if fitted) and window heating.   AUDI’S EV POINT MAN MAKES HIS CASE AT CHICAGO AUTO SHOW "Cody Thacker, a former U.S. Marine Corps lawyer now heading Audi of America’s ambitious electric-vehicle initiative, lays out a case as to why EVs ultimately should win the hearts and minds of consumers (and dealers)." says Wards Auto: "There is a joy of driving EVs because of their driving dynamics, quickness and quietness; it’s a more serene experience. By 2025, a third of Audi’s product portfolio will be electric. Two years ago, the conversations with dealers were different, There was more pushback. Now, dealers are seeing the value. We want to get them comfortable enough to take that leap of faith. It’s something we’re all trying to figure out."   https://www.wardsauto.com/chicago-auto-show/audi-s-ev-point-man-makes-his-case-chicago-auto-show   DACIA EV OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED FOR 2021-2022 LAUNCH "Tucked away in a lengthy document about Groupe Renault’s 2019 financial results is an interesting product roadmap regarding plans about electrification. It features the already launched Renault Zoe and the recently announced plug-in hybrid variants of the Captur, and Megane, along with the Clio regular hybrid, but there are also nine other models hiding under covers." says Motor1.com:"One is a plug-in hybrid version of an existing model while another is a non-plug-in-hybrid variant of a current Renault. Show #665   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 14th January 2020. CHINA SUSPENDS FURTHER ELECTRIC VEHICLE SUBSIDY CUTS "Beijing is suspending its plan to completely remove electric vehicle purchase subsidies this year, China’s chief minster of industry said on Saturday, as the government moves to stem further collapse spurred by the large-scale cuts which began in June." reports Technode.com: "The move is a big positive for the industry, and is expected to calm the market and preempt widepread bankruptcies throughout the EV industry. China’s sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) dropped 6% year on year to 1.2 million units in 2019, the first decline in 10 years since Beijing began providing incentives on EV purchases, according to government figures. NEVs include fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid EVs, and fuel cell EVs.China had initially planned a schedule of subsidy reductions each year beginning in 2016 to conclude with complete elimination of EV subsidies after 2020, reported Bloomberg, which all reductions, including the most recent in June, adhered to. The June cuts reduced by half subsidies from 2018, bringing the discount on an EV with an estimated 400 kilometer range to RMB 25,000 (roughly $3,625), for example."   https://technode.com/2020/01/13/minister-miao-wei-no-subsidy-cut/   Meanwhile Reuters adds: "Automakers who stand to benefit include Tesla (TSLA.O), which started making deliveries from its $2-billion Shanghai plant this month and secured NEV subsidies in December, Warren Buffett-backed Chinese electric car maker BYD (002594.SZ) as well as aspiring Tesla-challenger Nio Inc (NIO.N)."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-china-autos/china-says-no-significant-cut-in-new-energy-vehicle-subsidies-in-2020-idUKKBN1ZA0FB   PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S IS NEW LEAST-EFFICIENT EV "The EPA rating for the new Porsche Taycan Turbo S has been posted to fueleconomy.gov, and the results aren’t all that pretty. The Taycan is rated at just 68 MPGe with 192 miles of range, despite the car’s large 93 kWh battery." according to electrek: "While not a big drop from the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan Turbo S and its higher power delivery resulted in 1 less MPGe, and 9 miles less range than the Turbo’s 69 MPGe and 201 miles. This rating puts the car at the bottom of the heap for current electric vehicle efficiency. It is the least-efficient electric vehicle currently available in the US, taking the spot previously held by the Taycan Turbo. It is less efficient than large electric SUV/crossovers like the Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X."   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/14/porsche-taycan-turbo-s-is-new-least-efficient-ev-68-mpge-192-miles-epa-range/#   TESLA FILED MODEL Y CERTIFICATION PAPERS "According to Twitter user Alter Viggo, on January 9, Tesla filed certification papers with the California Air Resources Board for the Model Y. Why is that news? Because in 2017, Tesla began delivering Model 3 sedans to customers 25 days after it filed similar certification papers for the Model 3 with CARB." says Teslarati: "Twitter used Ryan McCaffery added this useful tidbit: “We already know that there will be Founders Series Y’s (there weren’t any Founders 3’s), and that those Founders cars are Performance models. So the fact that this listing is for PY does corroborate your hypothesis.” In other words, this may be for just a select few Model Ys (which could be hand built), while real production and deliveries commence in subsequent months or quarters."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/14/tesla-filed-model-y-certification-papers-with-carb-on-january-9-will-deliveries-begin-next-month/   AMAZON ALREADY HAS ELECTRIC DELIVERY TRUCKS "Ben Sullins (Teslanomics) recently posted a short video clip on Twitter showing what appeared to be an all-electric Ford Transit Amazon delivery van. It actually said 100 percent electric on the vehicle itself. Sean Mitchell took notice, only to learn that the conversion was performed by a company near him that he'd previously visited." picks up InsideEVs: "The Colorado-based company — Lightning Systems — converts Class 3 to Class 8 diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles to fully electric. "   https://insideevs.com/news/392555/video-amazon-electric-delivery-trucks/   SMOG IN SOUTHERN EUROPE SPARKS CAR BANS AND STREET PROTESTS "Cities across southern Europe are experiencing dangerously high levels of smog caused by a prolonged period of dry sunny weather and light winds." according to BBC News: "Temporary bans on diesel vehicles have been ordered in major Italian cities, including the capital, Rome, in an effort to reduce the pollution. In Rome, diesel cars, vans and motorbikes have been banned during peak times, while other polluting vehicles have been banned altogether. The restrictions, which are set to remain in place over the next three days, are expected to affect about one million vehicles."   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51132764   700,000 TOYOTAS AND LEXUSES NAMED IN FUEL PUMP RECALL And finally from Autoblog: "In an announcement posted to its corporate press room, Toyota made known a voluntary safety recall on select 2018 and 2019 Toyota and Lexus models. The recall includes roughly 696,000 vehicles and deals with a fuel pump that might stop working. An internal investigation into the issue is under way."   https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-is-conducting-a-safety-recall-involving-certain-toyota-and-lexus-vehicles-2/     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Which car company would you like to see doing more to embrace electrification? And why?       I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 228 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. China’s population is larger than the population of the US and Europe combined. The country is becoming the leader in AI development. The enabling factor for China’s rapid advancement in AI is that Chinese Tech giants and government agencies are investing heavily the most important fuel for AI development - data infrastructures. In healthcare, for example, the company Yitu has a team of about 400 doctors, most of whom work part-time for about 10 hours a week to help label data. One-fifth of the healthcare team’s full-time employees have a medical background.  Asian countries were lagging behind in digitization in the past, which enabled them to leapfrog development with mobile phones. The consumers here use Tencent’s WeChat for shopping, paying bills and more. Understandably, Tencent’s new strides into healthcare are highly anticipated. According to Technode, Tencent is testing real-time clinic services in its WeChat wallet, and as reported by mobihealthnews, Tencent Trusted Doctor is among a number of technology-driven firms looking to shake up China’s overburdened public healthcare market. According to Phillips Future Health Index 2019 China is an outlier in terms of healthcare professionals encouraging their patients to track healthcare data.  Julie Wang talks about Chinese culture, entrepreneurship, and values driving digital health in China. Ross Brand with your Livestream Universe Update and Flash Briefing for Wednesday, April 18th, 2018. Technode is reporting China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism shut down 370 live streaming apps after examining nearly 5-thousand of them. There are also some major players in China's livestream industry that are under investigation, including two that received a combined one billion dollars in funding. Areas being investigated include content that promotes “violence, pornography, gambling, superstition, and other values harmful to public morality.” Beyonce racked up the highest YouTube livestream viewership of any performance in Coachella's history. She had 458,000 simultaneous live viewers during her Saturday set. Our Wednesday Spotlight theme features musicians who livestream: Azania Noah is an international singer, song-writer and recording artist. She's been invited to perform for 4 heads of state and in some of the most prestigious venues in the world. Azania won first prize in a French TV competition similar to American Idol. She was also featured on “The Voice” in France, seen by more than 8 million viewers. In addition to sharing her singing voice on livestreams, Azania uses live video meetings to provide vocal training and career coaching to aspiring singers through her Singer Elite program. Claudia Santiago is also a bilingual singer and international recording artist who performs live in many different musical styles. Claudia has a new album coming out soon. Her live streaming talk shows cover a wide range of topics including health, careers, women's empowerment and art. She also livestreams her rehearsals. Claudia organized full-day music festivals in support of Mario Armstrong's Never Settle Show. Speaking of the Emmy winning Never Settle Show, co-produced by Roker Media, the show's band features Cassandra Kubinski on keyboards and lead vocals and Tony Daniels on guitar. Cassandra has released 6 albums and her songs have been chosen for tv shows and commercials. She's collaborated with some of the biggest stars in the music business, including Billy Joel. She wrote the inspiring song “Not So Different” in support of Autism Speaks. Tony is an accomplished voice actor doing everything from movie and commercial characters to tv promos, animation and narration. He's the voice of Tony the Tiger and does a wide range of accents.
