What does it mean to teach ‘leadership'? For most of human history, education and leadership formation were essentially the same thing. Only future leaders were formally educated. To educate someone was to form them - morally, civically, intellectually - for the responsibility of leading others. The classical traditions, whether Aristotelian, Stoic, or Confucian, did not aim to develop a leadership skill set, remaining agnostic to its ends. They aimed at wisdom, attempting to form a person who would be able to be a ‘good' leader.Then education became universal and at roughly the same moment, the shared moral and philosophical frameworks that had given classical formation its content were fragmenting under the weight of Enlightenment pluralism. In response, modern leadership development largely abandoned the project of forming the person in favour of helping individuals discover themselves and acquire tools to pursue whatever ends they chose. We exchanged formation for self-discovery, from becoming-before-doing, to becoming-through-doing. We have gained a great deal in that exchange — leadership development became accessible, personal, directly applicable to real dilemmas, and less paternalistic. But did the trade come with costs we don't always name?One cost may be that we have shifted the psychological burden onto the individual leader and assume they arrive in our classrooms with their own developed moral and ethical codes. This episode explores that tension. We discuss how we got here and what the most sophisticated modern responses to the problem look like – in the case of HEC Paris's Leadership Signature. We close with a question I find myself increasingly focused on: whether modern leadership development, in its emphasis on personalised insight and emotional resonance, may be optimising for the experience of insight rather than the slower, harder, more humbling work of insight formation — and whether AI is making that question newly urgent rather than answering it.I cannot think of anyone better to talk about all this than Emmanuel Coblence. Emmanuel is Associate Professor at HEC Paris and Academic Director of the school's Leadership programs in Executive Education — an architect, in other words, of one of the most thoughtful modern answers to the question we are asking. His "Leadership Signature" approach refuses the prescriptive recipe: rather than telling executives what kind of leader to be, it gives them a method for discovering and refining a leadership style that is genuinely their own, scaffolded by mentors, mirrors, and sponsors rather than by a fixed doctrine. I have had the pleasure of seeing him in the classroom – a masterclass in the art and science of executive education.Apart from his academic life, he has been a municipal councillor in Paris since 2014, with a focus on educational policy. This gives him a practitioner's eye on the civic dimensions of formation that pure academics often miss. And he is currently building an AI Leadership Mentor at HEC — which makes him one of the very few people qualified to think honestly about both the promise and the limits of what AI can give us in this domain.It is always a pleasure to speak to Emmanuel. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the current state of the MBA admissions season. Last week, admissions decisions rolled out for several top MBA programs including Harvard, Stanford, UPenn / Wharton, MIT / Sloan and Northwestern / Kellogg. This upcoming week, USC / Marshall, Rice / Jones, Texas / McCombs, UNC / Kenan Flagler, Vanderbilt / Owen and Washington / Foster are scheduled to release their Round 1 decisions. The next livestream AMA with Graham and Alex is scheduled for this Tuesday, December 16th; here's the link to Clear Admit's YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/cayoutubelive. Last week Clear Admit livestreamed its first Decision Day Watch Party. We scheduled this for December 10, when several top MBA programs were scheduled to release their Round 1 decisions. Several admissions officers joined us for the event, and it was a huge success. Graham highlighted a recently published Financial Times 2025 ranking of European business schools that ranks institutions across multiple programs (MBA, MiM, EMBA, and Executive Education), rather than individual programs, which we thought was a strange approach. Graham noted several admissions-related pieces of content recently published on Clear Admit. The first focuses on how to choose between MBA programs, once you have your offers. The second focuses on the dreaded wait list, and what steps can be taken. The third article looks at how candidates who didn't get positive results can reflect. The final admissions-related piece focuses on MBA essay construction, which led to a conversation about how best to use Clear Admit's AI Chat Bot. Graham highlighted two Real Humans pieces spotlighting students from Chicago / Booth and Emory / Goizueta. We then discussed the recently published employment reports from Stanford and NYU / Stern. Finally, Graham profiled a podcast that focuses on The Forté Foundation. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries. This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from Brazil but now resides in Chicago. They are looking at the Booth part-time MBA program. A potential concern is their 313 GRE score. This week's second MBA applicant is working in research, looking at the impact of tech on young people. They reside in New York City and are only looking at Columbia and Stern. This week's final MBA candidate has a strong professional background, transitioning from investment banking to private equity. They have a 3.8 GPA and a 325 GRE score. This is AI x Multilateralism, a mini-series on The Next Page, where experts help us unpack the many ideas and issues at the nexus of AI and international cooperation.   What does it mean to be AI literate, especially for the world's diplomats leading negotiations on behalf of their countries? We're joined by Dr. Jérôme Duberry, Senior Lecturer of International and Development Studies, Co-Director of Executive Education and the Head of the Tech Hub at the Geneva Graduate Institute. There, his research includes AI literacy across society, including among diplomats, and why this is critical to understanding the impact and potential of these technologies in our world.  Jérôme shares what AI literacy means for diplomats, and why both a technical and societal understanding of these technologies is critical for mitigating the risks of exclusion of many parts of society in AI development and deployment. Brian Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: ADS' plastic recycling operations and achievements Strategic efforts at ADS to reduce GHG emissions and their recognition as one of America's climate leaders by USA Today Partnerships that advance recycling and sustainability initiatives Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Brian's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  I think we tend to underestimate what change we can make over a decade, and so I think we need to look at change over a longer period. We overestimate what you can do in a year. We're always very aggressive about what you can do in a year, and then we underestimate what you can do over a decade. But if you look back, you find that we've made great change over decades. So I think we need to adjust how we look at how change. The change we make and the impact that we have needs to be longer term.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  I get really excited when people say plastics recycling doesn't work, because it does. Even though there's no silver bullet in solving the plastics problem. Because plastics in the environment is a problem, and we need to work together to solve that. I get pretty excited because a lot of people tell us that plastics recycling doesn't work, and ADS is an example that, yes, it does. We can actually effectively create circular economies for plastics and we can help to solve the plastic problem. That excites me because that is a big deal.  What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read?  My favorite is Cradle to Cradle. It's remaking the way that we make things. As someone who's done product management for a lot of their career, sustainability is key to product management. We need to think about end of life. When you design a product, it shouldn't just be around the economic value or the features and benefits or the value proposition that the product's delivering. You need to think about what happens at the end of life. Cradle to Cradle is a great way to open your eyes to that.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  We talked about one of them, being partners with groups like the Recycling Partnership. There's passionate individuals, people who are doing things across the country that you can hear from. The Ohio State Sustainability Institute being another one I talked about. Talking to those like minded companies, talking to those like minded people, people finding those like minded organizations out there that are aligned with what it is that you want to do from a sustainability perspective. Sustainability professionals listen to this. We have to make sure we make those connections because some of the best resources are talking to people about what they've learned, what failed, what worked. In her practice, she blends the best of proven negotiation strategies with evidence-based neuroplasticity tools so her clients lead and advocate with confidence and ease. Jamie also hosts a podcast for professional women, , covering topics often considered "too risky" at work -- salary negotiation, mental and reproductive health, office politics, social injustices, and unconventional ways smart women navigate their path forward despite inequitable and sexist cultures. A South Korean immigrant, Jamie first learned the value of self-advocacy from the example of her mother, who single-handedly raised three daughters while running a nail salon and speaking broken English in New Jersey. After attending Smith College to study East Asian Studies with a focus on Japanese, she built her career by capitalizing on her strengths, curiosity, and willingness to work in new industries. She worked as a buyer for a beauty products company, a junior analyst at a hedge fund trading firm, and in multiple roles within tech startups.
