What are we doing wrong when it comes to disaster resilience, especially as it impacts our ability to adapt to the climate impacts that are experiencing and take a longer view to disaster resilience. I think we tend to underestimate what change we can make over a decade, and so I think we need to look at change over a longer period. We overestimate what you can do in a year. We're always very aggressive about what you can do in a year, and then we underestimate what you can do over a decade. But if you look back, you find that we've made great change over decades. So I think we need to adjust how we look at how change. The change we make and the impact that we have needs to be longer term. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I get really excited when people say plastics recycling doesn't work, because it does. Even though there's no silver bullet in solving the plastics problem. Because plastics in the environment is a problem, and we need to work together to solve that. I get pretty excited because a lot of people tell us that plastics recycling doesn't work, and ADS is an example that, yes, it does. We can actually effectively create circular economies for plastics and we can help to solve the plastic problem. That excites me because that is a big deal. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read? My favorite is Cradle to Cradle. It's remaking the way that we make things. As someone who's done product management for a lot of their career, sustainability is key to product management. We need to think about end of life. When you design a product, it shouldn't just be around the economic value or the features and benefits or the value proposition that the product's delivering. You need to think about what happens at the end of life. Cradle to Cradle is a great way to open your eyes to that. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? We talked about one of them, being partners with groups like the Recycling Partnership. There's passionate individuals, people who are doing things across the country that you can hear from. The Ohio State Sustainability Institute being another one I talked about. Talking to those like minded companies, talking to those like minded people, people finding those like minded organizations out there that are aligned with what it is that you want to do from a sustainability perspective. Sustainability professionals listen to this. We have to make sure we make those connections because some of the best resources are talking to people about what they've learned, what failed, what worked. That gets me really excited. Dr. Carlos Quezada-Ruiz is a Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Instituto de Oftalmologia Fundación Conde de Valenciana's Retina Department in Mexico City. He also serves as the Senior Vice President of Clinical Research and Development and Therapeutic Area Head (Ophthalmology) at 4DMT, leading early- and late-stage clinical development teams focused on treating neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), and geographic atrophy (GA). In addition to his active clinical practice, Dr. Quezada-Ruiz has spent the past decade as a Drug Developer, beginning at Genentech–Roche. There, he worked on the Ophthalmology management team as Group Medical Director of Clinical Science (Product Development). During his tenure, he led the design, execution, and analysis of U.S. and global registrational trials for multiple retinal diseases, including the nAMD global clinical development program for VABYSMO, resulting in U.S. and worldwide approvals. He also led the global clinical science team for SUSVIMO, supporting its initial global filing, FDA approval, and launch in nAMD; successfully navigated the U.S. voluntary recall and commercial relaunch; and oversaw the phase 3 DR/DME registrational program through execution, readout, and filing with the FDA in early 2024. Previously, Dr. Quezada-Ruiz led Medical Affairs efforts for the U.S. launch of Lucentis Prefilled Syringe (PFS) and the myopic choroidal neovascularization indication for LUCENTIS. Furthermore, Dr. Quezada-Ruiz contributed to diversity and inclusion strategies in the Ophthalmology Franchise—such as the AAO MOM program—and advanced personalized healthcare in retina at Genentech by helping design and develop predictive models that use machine learning and large language models to support both drug development and clinical practice. Dr. Quezada-Ruiz is a Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists, with over 13 years of clinical practice and research in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. He earned his M.D. from Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila in his hometown of Torreón, Mexico. He completed fellowships in Vitreoretinal Surgery, Ocular Pathology Research, and Vitreoretinal Surgery Research at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, McGill University, and the California Retina Research Foundation, respectively. With a Ph.D. in Psychology and an MBA, MH has had an extensive career as a leadership psychologist, executive coach, and senior leader in the corporate, insurance and governance sectors. Her award-winning book, , was named a “Top 5 Book to Read” by Inc. Magazine and Forbes. During our interview, MH discussed her formative years, her educational journey in Quebec, her diverse professional development experiences, and her evolution from psychology into management. We delved into the importance of resilience, flexibility, strategic planning, and the integration of psychology and business for leaders and professionals. As a child growing up in Quebec City, MH enjoyed family trips to outdoor locations beyond the city, where she had the chance to explore and experience a sense of adventure and taking risks. She related this concept of adventure to her early career experiences as a psychologist when she lived in a more remote area of Quebec where mental health services were not plentiful. Yet, the needs were great in various settings. MH prepared herself to work there by taking additional courses to expand her credentials, enabling her to work in the courts, schools, and hospitals. She had to be strategic in this way to make a living doing work she felt was most important. Within the year, however, her plans changed, and she moved across the country to British Columbia to pursue her Ph.D. That presented some challenges as the rules regulating her psychology credentials varied between the provinces, and she had to take a few extra steps to achieve her goal. While on that journey, MH was able to develop other work options by asserting herself and taking some risks. It all paid off. Today, MH combines her business and clinical expertise, translating research about health, performance, resilience, and overcoming challenges into strategies professionals, leaders, and their teams need to thrive. She is a Member of the Global Clinical Practice Network of the World Health Organization and a past Director on the boards of the Canadian Psychological Association and the International Association of Applied Psychology. She has presented and authored numerous industry and academic publications, and many academic and industry awards have recognized her work. MH is a highly rated instructor at the University of British Columbia, Sauder School of Business, Executive Education.
