Free To Learn and PLAY with Dr. Peter Gray Peter Gray is an American psychologist, author and research professor. He has conducted and published research in neuroendocrinology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education. His research focuses on the role of play in human evolution and how children educate themselves, through play and exploration, when they are free to do so. He has expanded on these ideas in his book, Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life (Basic Books). He has been a regular contributor to Psychology Today magazine and is a founding member and president of the nonprofit Alliance for Self-Directed Education (ASDE) and a founding board director of the nonprofit Let Grow.  He earned his undergraduate degree at Columbia College and Ph.D. in biological sciences at the Rockefeller University many years ago. BEN SOLLEE is Kentucky-born cellist, singer-songwriter, and composer known for his innovative playing style, genre-bending songwriting, electrifying performances, political activism, and wide appeal. Like his contemporaries Chris Thile and Abigail Washburn, Sollee's music is difficult to pin down. It's Ben's quality of narrative and presence on stage that unifies his musical influences. This past year Ben has performed at Carnegie Hall, wrote the score for the documentary film Maidentrip, toured for two weeks in Europe and returned to the United States to perform with the Charlotte Ballet. THE PORTLAND CELLO PROJECT has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances. Since the group's inception in late 2007, the group has built a reputation mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go. No two shows are alike, with a repertoire now numbering over 1,000 pieces of music both expected and unexpected to come from a cello. The Cello Project's stage setup ranges from the very simple (4-6 cellos), to the all out epic (which has included 12 cellos playing with full choirs, winds, horns, and numerous percussion players). “I never knew if I was going to make it but I just wanted to know. I wanted to set out.” - Laura Dekker Today’s guest did something that no other person her age has ever done before. At age 14, Laura Dekker set out to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the planet singlehandedly. And at 16, she completed that journey by sailboat. And while it’s an understatement to call that world record amazing, what I love most about it is that she took her time to complete it — exposing herself to the world, meeting people and finding stories waiting for her, one port at at time. She’s the subject of the documentary film, Maidentrip, given a TEDx Talk in Auckland, and the author of a new book called One Girl, One Dream — an autobiographical account of her epic adventure. In this episode, we explore Laura’s journey and the person she’s become today. A Quick Preview: How Laura's early years spent sailing helped her to see life as a series of challenges. What happens to time when you're alone at sea for weeks. Why Laura took 2 years to complete the circumnavigation, which could be done in 7 months.
