This week im having a chat with Laura Dekker from the Laura Dekker World Sailing FoundationLaura made the history books back in 2010 when at the age of 14 she became the youngest person ever to attempt to sail around the world. It took place after a long fought battle with the Dutch government and became international headlines sparking a global debate, surrounding parental rights.Laura was born and grew up on the water and her father being a cruiser himself taught her how to manage and maintain a vessel from being a child. Im Alter von 14 Jahren um die Welt segeln. Was nach einem unrealistischen Teenager-Traum klingt, hat Laura Dekker in die Tat umgesetzt. Bis es soweit war, waren allerdings zahlreiche Probleme zu bewältigen. So wurde ihren Eltern sogar zwischenzeitlich das Sorgerecht entzogen.

Laura Dekker ist die jüngste Person, die einhand – also ganz alleine - die Welt umsegelt hat. Damals in einem Alter von nur 14 Jahren. Can you imagine achieving at the age of 16 what other dream their entire lives of doing and even then never take the first step toward embarking on the journey of their dreams?Our remarkable guest today knew from a very early age that she wanted to sail around the world, alone...in her own boat. It appeared as if everyone in her sphere were conspiring against her, to dash her dreams….well, I should say that her parents were very supportive, and encouraged her to put her thoughts into action. In fact, she was born in New Zealand, during a seven month sailing trip by her parents, spent the first five years of her life on at sea...was given her first boat at age six, a small dingy made for children…  She named her boat Guppy, all her boats have been named GuppyHer name is Laura Dekker. She'll be 26 on September 20th….she has a Dutch, German and New Zealand citizenship...truly a citizen of the world. At age 14, with a solo trip to England …..and back - departing from her home in the Netherlandsunder her belt and months, even years of experience alone aboard a ship….she announced her intentions to circumnavigate the globe, solo.Now, you know when you were a kid and you had this amazing idea and someone told you how dumb it was and somehow you agreed and gave up that dream, and suddenly the years go by and you wonder why the hell you ever listened to the doubeters in the first place?Well, Laura had many doubters, in fact the government f the Netherlands got involved, the Child Welfare Office objected, a family court judgment was obtained that placed Dekker in shared parental custody with the Council for Child Care who intended to stop her departure.Dutch naval law said a person under 16 wasn't allowed to captain a boat over seven meters long…. the Dutch court ended supervision of Dekker, and decided it was "up to the girl's parents to decide whether she can make the trip."[34] Dekker reported that she would depart "within two weeks".[35]Laura later commented about the authorities in an interview, saying "They thought it was dangerous. Well, everywhere is dangerous. New Zealand-born sailor Laura Dekker successfully completed a solo circumnavigation arriving in Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten, 518 days later at the age of 16 breaking the record for being the youngest to singlehandedly sail around the world, between the years 2010 – 2012. However, her circumnavigation was not uncontroversial. A Dutch court stepped in, owing to the objections of the local authorities, and prevented Laura from departing while under shared custody of both her parents and suddenly she was all over the news in Holland. Dekker later commented about the authorities in an interview, saying "They thought it was dangerous. Well, everywhere is dangerous. Advocaat Peter de Lange: “Bij windmolens gaat het over drie dingen, geld, geld en geld” De Nederlandse overheid wil graag "Parijs" halen en exploitanten kunnen miljoenen opstrijken aan subsidies voor windmolens. Boeren kunnen een jaarsalaris verdienen door de molen toe te staan op hun land. Zie daar een 'vruchtbare bodem' voor de vele windparken die in ons land verschijnen. Maar de weerstand groeit. Molens van wel 270 meter tiphoogte (anderhalf keer zo hoog als de Euromast) komen te staan op minder dan 300 meter afstand van woningen. Volgens advocaat Peter de Lange, in gesprek met wetenschapsjournalist Marcel Crok van Stichting Clintel, ondervinden tienduizenden Nederlanders overlast van windmolens. Geluidsoverlast is de voornaamste boosdoener. De Lange, die in het verleden onder meer het “zeilmeisje” Laura Dekker juridisch bijstond, staat al jaren omwonenden bij die procederen tegen de bouw van windmolens. Tot voor kort leek die juridische strijd bij de Raad van State kansloos. Maar daar gaat volgens De Lange verandering in komen. Hij stelt op basis van een Europese milieurichtlijn uit 2001 dat de bouw van windmolens dichtbij huizen niet toegestaan zou zijn. De richtlijn zegt namelijk dat bij nieuwe projecten de gezondheid van de mens beschermd of verbeterd dient te worden en dat is bij windmolens overduidelijk niet het geval. Het Europese Hof van Justitie, het hoogste rechtsorgaan in Europa, gaf in twee Belgische rechtszaken omwonenden gelijk en De Lange stelt nu dat de Raad van State deze wetgeving ook in Nederland moet overnemen. De Lange heeft via zijn website een brief opgesteld die burgers naar het bevoegd gezag in hun omgeving kunnen sturen en waarin er op gewezen wordt dat vergunningen voor windmolens op basis van het Europees recht nietig verklaard dienen te worden. In May 1985, when Tania was 18 years old, she cast off from the docks of South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan and sailed 27,000 miles around the world—alone—on her Contessa 26, Varuna.    Concerned about her lack of ambition, her father offered her this opportunity as an alternative to a college education, and she took him up on it. With just a cat for company, she crossed the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, and the North Atlantic, stopping in 23 countries along the way. Erik is an author, publisher, moderator and podcast host from Berlin, Germany. He has published an impressive amount of work, ranging from travel guides, travel books, short story anthologies to magazine articles and more. He is also the founder of Weltwach (which roughly translates to world awake), a German online magazine for adventure and travel topics. The related podcast, hosted and produced by Erik, already has produced 188 episodes and counting.Since last year, the Weltwach podcast produces an English offshoot called Unfolding Maps. Die Eltern von Laura Dekker sind 7 Jahre lang um die Welt gesegelt. Laura kam auf dieser Reise in Neuseeland zur Welt. Im Alter von 4 kam sie das erste mal in die Niederlande, die Heimat Ihrer Eltern. Im Alter von 6 haben sich ihre Eltern getrennt und Laura entschied sich dafür, bei Ihrem Vater zu bleiben. Sie glaubt heute, dass es daran lag, weil ihre Mutter sich auf dem Boot unsicherer fühlte, als ihr Vater. Laura spürte schon damals, dass Sie später auch einmal um die Welt segeln wollte. Vor 9 Jahren im Alter von 14 ist Laura dann alleine aufgebrochen, um die Welt zu umsegeln. Als sie ankam war sie 16. Niemand war jemals jünger. Sie ist heute dankbar dafür, dass ihre Eltern sie immer ermutigt haben und dass sie so früh im Leben gespürt hat, was ihr wirklich wichtig ist. Ihr Alter, so Laura, war perfekt, weil sich ihre Persönlichkeit in der Pubertät in der sie auf der Reise war, so ausprägen und weiterentwickeln konnte. There are ordinary teenagers... and then there's Laura, who at 13 years of age, ventured to become the youngest person to ever sail the planet - alone, without support boats or checkpoints along her way.What followed was a lengthy legal battle that included Duch authorities, wiretaps, her parents losing custody over Laura and much more... but after a lot of media coverage and public outcry from people including Richard Branson, a Dutch court finally decided in her favor, and the record-breaking attempt finally began on 21 August 2010.Laura successfully completed the solo circumnavigation in a 12.4-meter (40 ft) two-masted ketch called “Guppy”, arriving in Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten, 518 days later at the age of 16.She’s the author of the book “One Girl One Trip” and subject of the documentary “Maiden Trip”. At age 14, Laura Dekker set sail on a solo journey from the Netherlands. A year and a half later, she became the youngest person ever to circumnavigate the globe. Her tale is incredible, but perhaps the most astonishing part is that it almost didn’t happen. Laura originally planned to embark on her trip at age 13, but when Dutch authorities got wind of her plans, the Child Welfare Office stepped in and barred her journey. For nearly a year, Laura and her family were entangled in court battles before Laura finally won the right to make her voyage. In this episode, Laura shares the story of her trip with us, what she learned along the way as well as her thoughts on some of the larger issues such as the rights of individuals vs. the perceptions of society and how to balance experience with safety when it comes to parenting.
