[School of Everything Else 2025] All the way back in 2017 I put together an absolutely EPIC musical journey through the first eight years of the MCU, from Iron Man all the way up to Doctor Strange. So much time has passed since then (cue many gifs of Matt Damon drinking from the wrong Grail) and Marvel has not followed my sound advice about allowing each hero (and maybe a villain or two) to retain a theme that reprises with every subsequent appearance. However, that does not mean there haven't been some truly excellent scores composed, which got side-lined in the clickbaity rush to pronounce Marvel as being formulaic, failing or indeed signifying the baleful death of film. Here for you now is a compendium of themes and sonic explorations as Phase 3 draws to its epic conclusion and Phases 4 and 5 wend their way from the small screen to the big and back again. I look forward to a third volume of these shows sometime in the early 2030s, when the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Secret Wars and whatever happens with Spider-Man and whatever inevitable soft reboot brings us to a new era of superhero cinema. 1.     The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (‘Louisiana Hero' by Henry Jackman) 2.     Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (‘Dad' by Tyler Bates) 3.     Spider-Man Homecoming (Michael Giacchino) 4.     Thor: Ragnarok (‘Main Title' by Mark Mothersbourough) 5.     Black Panther (‘Wakanda', ‘Warrior Falls' and ‘Killmonger' by Ludwig Goransson) 6.     Infinity War (Alan Silvestri) 7.     Captain Marvel (‘Main Theme' and ‘All Fired Up' by Pinar Toprak) 8.     Black Widow (‘Yelena Belova' and ‘Natasha Soars' by Lorne Balfe) 9.     WandaVision (‘Opening Themes: 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s' and ‘End Cretids' by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez and Christophe Beck) 10. Christophe Beck, an Emmy-winning film and television composer, has defined the sound of iconic productions such as FROZEN, THE HANGOVER franchise, THE MUPPETS and the cult classic series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Christophe via Zoom at his Los Angeles home near the end of September 2024. During the conversation, they talked about his career to date, being tutored by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, his work on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and composing for the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, including AGATHA ALL ALONG. But first, they discussed another of his recent scores, THE INSTIGATORS, which will be released on APPLE + in August 2024. Doug Liman directed the film, which stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to steal a corrupt politician's ill-gotten gains. When the heist goes wrong, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of chaos. Once you do, you can participate in all upcoming all-request programs. Before we get into today's episode, we must first discuss its origins. On October 30, 2023, I worked late into the evening to complete the first ALL REQUEST HALLOWEEN SPECIAL. The audio was recorded, tracks were chosen, and the editing was finished. I tried to export the show, and to my horror Adobe Audition crashed. I restarted the application and tried again. Same result, but this time I received an error message indicating that my voice-over file was corrupt. It took nearly an hour to record the voiceover and several hours to edit the episode. I was also in the midst of one of my busiest years ever, so I didn't have the time or energy to do it all over again, so I informed my Patrons that the show would be postponed and rescheduled for this year! Thank goodness I have a wonderful community of patrons over there, they understand and waited patiently for the show to be done.  Fast forward almost 365 days, and here we are; everything has been re-recorded, re-edited, and... So, you might want to tread carefully, as there are spoilers in the notes below. Music L'espagne pour memoire by Michel Portal Find me Tomorrow from Christophe Beck's score to Charlie Countryman The old Soviet philharmonic plays some Shostakovich. The London Symphony Orchestra plays The Blue Danube Waltz. We hear Walt by Mother Falcon. Sombolero by Luiz Bonfa Notes Like a lot of people below, say, 55, I first heard about Olga Fikotova-Connolly when reading her obituary in the New York Times. By far the best thing you can do if you want to know more about her is track down her out-of-print memoir, The Rings of Destiny, which, despite its rather puffed-up title, is so warm and detailed and intimate. It's a delight.  You might also enjoy this late-in-life interview with Olga as well.

Dana and Tom discuss one of the most celebrated comedies of the 21st Century which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this week, The Hangover (2009): directed by Todd Phillips, written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, music by Christophe Beck, starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Mike Tyson, Heather Graham, and Ken Jeong.Plot Summary: "The Hangover" is a raucous comedy that transforms a bachelor party into a riotous odyssey of misadventures. Directed by Todd Phillips, the film opens with four friends heading to Las Vegas for a night of celebration, only to wake up the next morning with no memory of the previous night's events. What follows is a frenetic quest to piece together their fragmented memories and locate their missing groom."The Hangover" is more than just a series of outrageous gags; it's a cleverly constructed comedy that finds humor in the extremes of human behavior. While it may not delve into profound themes, it excels in delivering sheer entertainment, making it a memorable entry in the genre.Chapters:00:00 Intro01:34 Recognition for The Hangover (2009)03:57 What is Your Relationship to this Film?06:26 What is this Film About?07:23 Your Wildest Bachelor Party Stories?13:46 Is Las Vegas Actually Fun?15:34 Plot Summary16:32 Did You Know?18:17 First Break18:53 Ask Dana Anything...26:32 Best Performance(s)29:31 Most Charismatic32:41 Best/Favorite Scene - Most Indelible Moment37:33 Second Break38:26 In Memoriam41:02 Best/Funniest Lines45:12 The Stanley Rubric45:45 Legacy50:42 Impact and Significance55:04 Classicness58:19 Rewatchability01:01:30 Final Score01:09:55 Remaining Questions01:13:03 Remaining Thoughts for the Week01:14:46 Wrap-Up/CreditsYou can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/the-hangover-2009For the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios KeywordsGreatest Movie of All Time, podcast, The Hangover, comedy, 2009, box office success, popular culture, performances, Zach Galifianakis, Todd Phillips, Jon Lucas, Scott Moore, memorable scenes, notable individuals, The Hangover, film, legacy, impact, novelty, classicness, rewatchability, audience score, best vs greatest, Ghostbusters

Geektown Radio will be back next week, but before we return for the main show, we have some more interviews for you! This week, I'm chatting with the lovely composer, Jake Monaco.Jake Monaco is an American film and TV composer, who has worked on a huge array of projects, from some of the biggest film scores of the past decade, to children's TV shows, and everything in between. We've previously spoken to Jake about his work on Netflix's ‘Dinotrux', Amazon's ‘The Stinky & Dirty Show', along with working as a producer and composer of additional music for Christophe Beck, where he worked on things such as ‘Frozen', ‘The Hangover' trilogy, and ‘The Muppets'.His latest project is a bit of a departure from his previous work, as he scores National Geographic's ‘Incredible Animal Journeys', narrated by Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner, which you can find on Disney+ in the UK. This fascinating nature series follows the travels of a huge array of animals, from the humpback to the dung beetle, and many other species. We discuss Jake's approach to the soundscape of the series, and creating the music most fitting for each creature's journey.Since we last spoke to Jake he's also worked on several other projects for Disney, including ‘Cars on the Road', ‘Forky Asks a Question', and ‘Lamp Life', so we touch on those, and many of his other projects too.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Set three years after the first film, Frozen II follows sisters Anna and Elsa, and their companions Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf as they travel to an enchanted forest to unravel the origin of Elsa's magical power. It explores the themes of colonialism and advocating reparation.Frozen II was greenlit in March 2015 after a company debate about whether it would be perceived as inferior to the original. It used more-complex, enhanced animation technology than Frozen, and was an interdepartmental collaboration. Anderson-Lopez and Lopez returned as the film's songwriters, and Christophe Beck again composed the score. The film was translated into 46 languages and was accompanied by Into the Unknown: Making Frozen II, a documentary series.Frozen II premiered in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on November 7, 2019, and was released in the United States on November 22. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $1.450 billion worldwide, finishing its theatrical run as the third-highest-grossing film of 2019, the tenth-highest-grossing film of all time, and the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time. It also held the title of the highest-grossing worldwide opening of all time for an animated film for three years. Frozen II received a nomination for Best Original Song at the 92nd Academy Awards, among numerous other accolades. Two sequels are in development. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:34 UTC on Thursday, 23 November 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Frozen II on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Emma Neural.

Welcome Dan Nagan of Everything We Learned (https://twitter.com/adapperdanman/) back to the program! Is there virtue in repetition? In EDGE OF TOMORROW, there's a certain indignity to it – Tom Cruise's Bill Cage dies repeatedly and violently in an inter-species war in search of a secret that could tip the scales in humanity's favor. But in reliving a single failed decisive battle every day (thanks to a time-resetting superpower he honestly fell ass-first into), Cage's challenge is less in losing the war and more in the threat of becoming numb to the horrors of armed combat – including the seemingly unavoidable death of Sergeant Rita Vrataski, whose proficiency and drive inspire Cage's personal growth through the ‘fiery crucible' of war. Well, they just may have been visited by a group of Gandalf Gnomes playing knock and don't run on the elderly couple's door. Aka cherry knocking. Aka gnoming, coincidently. You know that to be a true Gandalf the White, you need a staff but what exactly does that staff do? What if you tap the staff twice? Before we really get in to the case though, we cover the important matters in life. For example, what people do when they retire. What does Guardians of the Galaxy's Groot's ballsack look like? Do some people really, really enjoy The Lord of the Rings? Like, really. Back on the case, if an unknown and potentially hostile extraterrestrial figure knocks on your door, you probably shouldn't open wide to confront it but that is exactly what happened in this probe. But why were the Worzel Gummidge Gandalf gnome aliens here? Was this a prank or was this just literally a social visit? Alongside all of that, we ponder… What is the point of porches? Ultimately, does any of this even matter? That's right folks, the Oscars suck! But we've suspected that for many years now. But this year, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, officially, publicly, declared their show to be an utter joke! Now, they didn't say that directly, but, according to Variety... "Several major Academy Awards will not be presented on the air during this year's Oscars in an effort to present a more streamlined and television-friendly broadcast. Eight honors will instead be awarded during off-air parts of the show and then edited into the telecast." What are the eight categories that the Academy deemed to be meaningless? "The awards that will be handed out earlier in the ceremony are for documentary short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live action short and sound. The ceremony will start one hour before the on-camera portion begins in order to accommodate the changes." And there you have it... proof that the Academy has NEVER cared about secondary categories. They don't even pay attention to them. Do you REALLY think a major producer or actor is sitting at home pondering who they'll pick for the best animated short film? Of course not! It's a popularity contest. The flavour of the month! It's farse! So, yes, the Oscars officially suck! As a result, I've chosen to boycott the Oscars until they clean up their act. Actually, I haven't watched the Oscars in a few years since seeing millionaires pat themselves on the back every year no longer interests me. And the show is always too lengthy, with overlong dance routines, uninteresting montages, and politically heated acceptance speeches that no one wants to watch or listen to. But, hey, let's continue to show complete performances of each of the five nominated songs. That seems to be the only musical category that matters to the Academy. Why watch a composer like Hildur Guðnadóttir win the first-ever Academy Award for best original dramatic score by a woman? I'm sure no one wanted to watch her inspirational speech, right? Over the years, I've dedicated a number of broadcasts to the Academy Awards. I've even mentioned how many Oscars a composer has earned on several occasions. That will no longer be the case here at Cinematic Sound Radio. I'm not going to mention the Academy again until they alter their methods, and I'm also not going to promote their phoney awards. The Oscars Suck! Instead, I'll discuss what I enjoyed last year. So, in part one of this two-part programme, I'll talk about and play music from the 2021 soundtracks that I liked. However, there is one significant modification to the show's format. I'm not going to do a countdown. I'm just going to spotlight a few scores that I really like and play either a single track or a whole suite. Having said that, I'm going to save my favourite 2021 score till the conclusion of part two. He studied with composer Jerry Goldsmith and has worked alongside of one-time, fellow students Christophe Beck and Marco Beltrami. He has written original music for BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT, JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER and GENERATOR REX. He has also written video game scores such as TRON: EVOLUTION, STAR TREK ONLINE and CHAMPIONS ONLINE. It continues the original animated television series, Invader Zim, which originally aired on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons from 2001 to 2002. The new film was released on Netflix on August 16, 2019. In the film, Zim suddenly reappears to begin Phase 2 of his evil alien plan to conquer Earth, while his longtime nemesis Dib sets out to unmask him once and for all.In this episode, composer Kevin Manthei talks about returning to the Invader Zim franchise after 20 years. He discloses some of the challenges he faced in returning like: being respectful to his original score for the tv series while also adding something new. He reveals just how collaboratively he worked with creator/director Jhonen Vasquez; how Bram Stoker's Dracula influenced a portion of the music and how an early version of a particular piece was compared, by the director, to John Williams' Home Alone.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS02:34 - Space Looked Back03:57 - Discovering Dib & Main Titles07:22 - Floopsy Bloops Smoopsy SRC08:19 - Epic Montage12:30 - Peace is Nice15:16 - Schmorpus Hole18;22 - Dibs Epic Chase20:59 - End CreditsSOUNDTRACKYou can listen to the original score for Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus at Kevin Manthei's Soundcloud page.MORE ABOUT THE COMPOSERSYou can find out more and hear more music by Kevin Manthei at his official site, https://www.kmmproductions.com/ and you can follow him on Twitter @kevinmantheiABOUT THE ANNOTATORProduced by Christopher Coleman (@ccoleman) and you can Find more episodes at THEANNOTATOR.NET or you can subscribe via iTunes, Stitcher Radio or wherever you find quality podcasts.FOLLOW USTwitter @audioannotatorFacebook @TheAnnotatorInstagram @TheAnnotatorEmail theannotatorpodcast@gmail.com

Ant-Man and the Wasp have shrunk their way into theaters and Dane Walker (composer in parentheses), Kristen Romanelli and Christopher Coleman go big on their discussion about the 20th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They discuss Christophe Beck's follow-up score, compare it to the first film, Ant-Man, and garnish it all with their overall thoughts about Peyton Reed's much expanded film that has the unenviable position of being the direct MCU-follow-up to the massive hit (and massively devastating) Avengers: Infinity War.Episode Highlights00:00 - The Insectroduction01:48 - Speakpipe speaks!07:02 - Feelers for Ant-Man13:28 - Ant-Man and the Wasp - Film reaction (no spoilers)20:00 - Ant-Man and the Wasp - Score reaction (no spoilers)28:00 - Baba Yaga, Antropodie and Track Titles (SPOILER REALM)30:12 - Janet Van Dyne Homework (SPOILER REALM)32:16 - What stood out in the film?
