Choirboys: Run To Paradise As young twenty-something-year-olds, Choirboys formed in 1978, growing up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The wild, hedonistic lifestyle the band witnessed of the youth in the 70s is ultimately what gave birth to their seminal rock anthem, Run To Paradise. It’s all about the stories that sound all too familiar within the culture widely assumed of the music industry - “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” and they tell it all.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersOne song can tell a dozen stories and stir even more memories, but there's only so much that can be told in a four-minute window. The real stories, the ones that were happening while the public story was being written, generally remain in the hearts and minds of only those directly involved - and usually with good reason. But now, in an unprecedented move and one which would have possibly drawn consternation a mere 15 or so years ago, Aussie rock legends Choirboys are opening the vault of secrecy with a stunning new live performance combining music and tales.Forming in 1978, Choirboys rose to prominence on the back of songs such as Run To Paradise, Boys Will Be Boys and Struggle Town, songs that reflected their surroundings told in an uncompromising and honest fashion to great effect. They remain the honest toilers of the Australian music scene, traveling far and wide to play a show with their humour intact and their passion for music unwavering. So it is fitting that a band like Choirboys have elected to tell their story through a mixing of live songs and behind the scenes stories titled Run To Paradise, The Stories Of Australian Rock & Roll. It is a live-action event unlike any seen before in this country as told by frontman and one of the most down-to-earth guys in the business, Mark Gable.Gable joined HEAVY recently to chat about the show and life as a Choirboy. We started by pointing out the sheer magnitude of touring the band has committed to over the next 12 months."I think considering the condition of the Australian music industry at the moment and how I feel about doing pubs and all the rest of it…," he trailed off, "and it was Tim Freedman I spoke to at the ARIA Awards and I went 'Tim, you've inspired me' and he said how come, and I said you know, Blow Up The Pokies because I just don't wanna do pubs anymore because all they do is have people go in and gamble. Of course, Blow Up The Pokies was about The Whitlams bass player who ended his own life because he gambled, and he couldn't deal with it anymore, and that's why the song was written. Tim goes, 'that's a bit extreme isn't it Mark?' (laughs). I was just thinking, I'd rather do interesting things, so hence we're doing lots of festivals. And the theatre show is part and parcel of that because… I think rather than just re-iterate the same old, same old, I would rather make it interesting, and the theatre shows are the beginning of that. The stories and the stuff that we've seen on the road and the stuff that's happened - the legendary stuff - I talk about that in the theatre show and also celebrate the music that we've seen which still exists, but a lot of the bands have come and gone. It's a different world out there now so we have to celebrate the way it was. Actually, I'm enjoying the new world; the internet world of new Australian bands who are breaking all over the world because of what we have now."In the full interview, Mark talks more about the theatre show and what to expect, how Choirboys have survived so many years in the industry, using other people's music to tell a story, the early days of the band and their initial vision, having to research and relive old memories and more.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How to slow down scientific progress, according to Leo Szilard, published by jasoncrawford on January 5, 2023 on LessWrong. Leo Szilard—the physicist who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction and who urged the US to undertake the Manhattan Project—also wrote fiction. His book of short stories, The Voice of the Dolphins, contains a story “The Mark Gable Foundation,” dated 1948, from which I will present to you an excerpt, without comment: “I'm thinking of setting up a trust fund. I want to do something that will really contribute to the happiness of mankind; but it's very difficult to know what to do with money. When Mr. Rosenblatt told me that you'd be here tonight I asked the mayor to invite me. I certainly would value your advice.” “Would you intend to do anything for the advancement of science?” I asked. “No,” Mark Gable said. “I believe scientific progress is too fast as it is.” “I share your feeling about this point,” I said with the fervor of conviction, “but then why not do something about the retardation of scientific progress?” “That I would very much like to do,” Mark Gable said, “but how do I go about it?” “Well,” I said, “I think that shouldn't be very difficult. As a matter of fact, I think it would be quite easy. You could set up a foundation, with an annual endowment of thirty million dollars. Research workers in need of funds could apply for grants, if they could make out a convincing case. Have ten committees, each composed of twelve scientists, appointed to pass on these applications. Take the most active scientists out of the laboratory and make them members of these committees. And the very best men in the field should be appointed as chairmen at salaries of fifty thousand dollars each. Also have about twenty prizes of one hundred thousand dollars each for the best scientific papers of the year. This is just about all you would have to do. Your lawyers could easily prepare a charter for the foundation. As a matter of fact, any of the National Science Foundation bills which were introduced in the Seventy-ninth and Eightieth Congresses could perfectly well serve as a model.” “I think you had better explain to Mr. Gable why this foundation would in fact retard the progress of science,” said a bespectacled young man sitting at the far end of the table, whose name I didn't get at the time of introduction. “It should be obvious,” I said. “First of all, the best scientists would be removed from their laboratories and kept busy on committees passing on applications for funds. Secondly, the scientific workers in need of funds would concentrate on problems which were considered promising and were pretty certain to lead to publishable results. For a few years there might be a great increase in scientific output; but by going after the obvious, pretty soon science would dry out. Science would become something like a parlor game. Some things would be considered interesting, others not. There would be fashions. Those who followed the fashion would get grants. Those who wouldn't would not, and pretty soon they would learn to follow the fashion, too.” Thanks for listening. Lockdown and gig cancellations presented challenges to all in the music industry. Many worked on new music, took up a day-job and some sat back on their millions and waited for covid to be over. Mark Gable and Choirboys started doing weekly live streams, to thousands of fans also locked down in their homes. Online Sexual Abuse: The Case of Mark Gable

HJ Talks about abuse

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2019 11:49

We have covered in previous podcasts the prevalence of online sexual abuse. We make no apologies for returning to this unpleasant subject which has been in the news again. A paedophile couple who filmed themselves sexually abusing children, including a baby, have been jailed for a total of 21 years. Mark Gable, 33, was arrested after police officers found a video of him sexually assaulting a baby during a search of his home. A number of other images and videos were discovered which also showed Gable, sexually assaulting children. Through their investigations, the police discovered that Gable’s girlfriend, Jessica Fry, had filmed the initial video as well as a number of the other images and videos. There is tragically a trade in the sharing and publication of images and videos showing children being abused. No doubt money as well as the sexual interest in children are motivators. Understandably all right minded people are appalled by such behaviour, but there is a general lack of awareness as to the law and how it can easily be broken. BBC Radio 4 recently broadcast “The Boy in the Video”, produced and presented by Lucy Proctor. The story starts with an everyday event - a WhatsApp message to a group set up by mums at the school gates to discuss missing jumpers and school trips. But this message contains a video of a little boy being sexually abused. And one of the group members happens to be a BBC radio producer. So begins an investigation into the dark world of child sexual exploitation as Lucy tries to find out what happened to the boy. Has he been rescued? Is his abuser in jail? Along the way Lucy meets the police trying to combat the online proliferation of images and videos of children being abused - millions are in circulation, shared on social media platforms as if they are funny cat memes. She asks what we should do about the 450 men arrested every month for viewing and sharing this material? At the moment, end-to-end encryption means WhatsApp is a safe haven for offenders - but are the tech firms doing enough? In the programme Alan Collins – partner at Hugh James explains that there is a lack of understanding, and people can easily not appreciate that “private” images may not remain that way. It should also be stressed that “online” abuse is not victim free. We have suggested that the law needs to be beefed-up to reflect the reality that someone at home viewing a child being abused is just as guilty as the person in the room committing the physical aspect of the abuse.

The Choirboys have been a fixture on the Australian music scene for over 30 years. Championed by music industry legend Ian "Molly" Meldrum, and having supported the likes of The Angels and Rose Tattoo and Cold Chisel on tour, Choirboys brought us iconic hits like Run To Paradise and Boys Will Be Boys. Now the guys are back on tour with their take on the hits of AC/DC. We talk to founding member Mark Gable about his career, his battles with depression and performing the legendary songs of Bon Scott. Choirboys have been an active, vibrant pub rock/hard rock band in their native Australia for over 30 years. They've had several major hits Down Under, including 1987's "Run To Paradise" which, get this, is the 11th best selling Australian single of the 80s! Surprisingly, they've never made much of a dent in America (and never tried too hard). We talk about the differences between Australian and American success, what kind of a lifestyle "Run to Paradise" has afforded them, and them being discovered by George Young, the older brother of Angus and Malcolm from AC/DC. I also pick his brain on some of my favorite artists hailing from the eastern hemisphere. The guy has quite the personality, enjoy! http://www.choirboys.net/
