It is with deep sadness that one of the great writers and guests on “Between the Lines,” Joseph Wambaugh passed away this week.Whether it was his fictional masterpieces like “The Choirboys,” “The Blue Knight” and “The New Centurions” or his acclaimed nonfiction books like “The Onion Field” or "Fire Lover," Joseph took us behind the badge into the heart of his characters.  On this episode we discussed his acclaimed book “Hollywood Crows” and once again he dove deep into his subjects with a poignant look at the men and women in blue.Support the show

Neil Gill For Breakfast - Triple M Central West 105.1

Choirboys: Run To Paradise As young twenty-something-year-olds, Choirboys formed in 1978, growing up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The wild, hedonistic lifestyle the band witnessed of the youth in the 70s is ultimately what gave birth to their seminal rock anthem, Run To Paradise. It’s all about the stories that sound all too familiar within the culture widely assumed of the music industry - “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” and they tell it all.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Interview by Kris PetersOne song can tell a dozen stories and stir even more memories, but there's only so much that can be told in a four-minute window. The real stories, the ones that were happening while the public story was being written, generally remain in the hearts and minds of only those directly involved - and usually with good reason. But now, in an unprecedented move and one which would have possibly drawn consternation a mere 15 or so years ago, Aussie rock legends Choirboys are opening the vault of secrecy with a stunning new live performance combining music and tales.Forming in 1978, Choirboys rose to prominence on the back of songs such as Run To Paradise, Boys Will Be Boys and Struggle Town, songs that reflected their surroundings told in an uncompromising and honest fashion to great effect. They remain the honest toilers of the Australian music scene, traveling far and wide to play a show with their humour intact and their passion for music unwavering. So it is fitting that a band like Choirboys have elected to tell their story through a mixing of live songs and behind the scenes stories titled Run To Paradise, The Stories Of Australian Rock & Roll. It is a live-action event unlike any seen before in this country as told by frontman and one of the most down-to-earth guys in the business, Mark Gable.Gable joined HEAVY recently to chat about the show and life as a Choirboy. We started by pointing out the sheer magnitude of touring the band has committed to over the next 12 months."I think considering the condition of the Australian music industry at the moment and how I feel about doing pubs and all the rest of it…," he trailed off, "and it was Tim Freedman I spoke to at the ARIA Awards and I went 'Tim, you've inspired me' and he said how come, and I said you know, Blow Up The Pokies because I just don't wanna do pubs anymore because all they do is have people go in and gamble. Of course, Blow Up The Pokies was about The Whitlams bass player who ended his own life because he gambled, and he couldn't deal with it anymore, and that's why the song was written. Tim goes, 'that's a bit extreme isn't it Mark?' (laughs). I was just thinking, I'd rather do interesting things, so hence we're doing lots of festivals. And the theatre show is part and parcel of that because… I think rather than just re-iterate the same old, same old, I would rather make it interesting, and the theatre shows are the beginning of that. The stories and the stuff that we've seen on the road and the stuff that's happened - the legendary stuff - I talk about that in the theatre show and also celebrate the music that we've seen which still exists, but a lot of the bands have come and gone. It's a different world out there now so we have to celebrate the way it was. Actually, I'm enjoying the new world; the internet world of new Australian bands who are breaking all over the world because of what we have now."In the full interview, Mark talks more about the theatre show and what to expect, how Choirboys have survived so many years in the industry, using other people's music to tell a story, the early days of the band and their initial vision, having to research and relive old memories and more.

Following the release of their country inspired album Home earlier this year - an album that has since seen them secure ARIA Awards in that genre - and a massive Australian run of shows, Kingswood are now only days away from heading overseas for another European tour. It seems everything they touch is gold. Until they said yes to this interview.Kyra-Jade Coombs and Kris Peters drew the short straws for the day.Kyra kicked things off by bringing up Kingswood's ever changing sound and whether it is a planned progression musically or more a matter of circumstance."To be honest it's so weird," Alex replied. "You would think there would be a distinct conversation and then there's a strategy behind it where we say we should do this, but honestly Fergus and I love so much music and always have done. We've been musical around each other since we were 12 years old. There are so many different influences. These things happen where we eventually just go 'this is inspiring at the moment, what do you think of this?' And there's so much mystery that has made us who we are musically that at some point, once you've exhausted something, you feel like you become accomplished in it…"Nothing is off limits in the ensuing 30 minutes as we cover everything from touring to festival survival tips. Strap in and enjoy the ride.*note due to the live recording of the interviews some background noise and comments can be heard intermittently. David Sean Gleeson, (born 3 June 1968) is the lead singer of Australian hard rock group The Screaming Jets. He was born in Newcastle, New South Wales . . Gleeson formed his first rock band, Aspect, in 1985, with school pal, Grant Walmsley. In January 1989 Gleeson on lead vocals and Walmsley on guitar, were joined by Brad Heaney on drums, Richard Lara on guitar and Paul Woseen on bass guitar, to form The Screaming Jets as a hard rock band in Newcastle. Within twelve months they had performed more than 280 live shows, they established a reputation for being one of the best young live bands in Australia, winning the praises and support slots of The Angels, The Choirboys and The Radiators. By late 1989, The Screaming Jets had won youth radio station Triple J's National Band Competition. They signed a recording deal with the leading independent label rooArt. The Screaming Jets moved from their hometown Newcastle to Sydney's notorious Kings Cross district in early 1990, and recorded their debut album All For One in mostly midnight to dawn sessions at a local studio, after playing live shows seven nights a week. In 2006, Gleeson appeared as the vocal coach for actress Kate Fischer in the televised celebrity singing competition It Takes Two. He returned to the show in 2007 and partnered with TV presenter, Julia Zemiro. In early 2011 Gleeson was offered a radio show with the Triple M network. By mid-year he was hosting two shows, Access All Areas and Rock of Ages, interviewing artists including Jimmy Barnes and Don McLean, and giving an inside view of the music industry. Late that year Gleeson recorded an album, Take It to the Streets (31 August 2012), with his childhood idols, The Angels, as their new lead singer, and they completed a national tour. On 19 June 2016 at the Governor Hindmarsh - Adelaide, Dave Gleeson was inducted into The South Australian Music Hall Of Fame, alongside The Angels. On 31 January 2022 he returned to Australian rock radio station Triple M filling the 7-10pm nightly slot with his new show Triple M nights with Dave Gleeson broadcasting across Australia from Triple M Adelaide studio.

A Celebration Of Life Through Music With JAMES MORLEY Of BON BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

HEAVY Music Interviews

AC/DC and their music will forever be a part of Australian rock and roll history.Although the band are still producing new music, Father time is inevitably catching up with them but their legacy remains firmly intact. The band have spawned probably more tribute acts than any other band, to varying degrees of success, but Australia is fortunate enough to be home to the finest AC/DC tribute bands the world over. One of those is Bon But Not Forgotten, an assembling of musicians that not only play the music of Australia's greatest ever rock band, but, more importantly feel a connection to the songs they choose to pay homage to.Initially formed by former Choirboys and The Angels bass player James Morley, Bon But Not Forgotten has featured members from acts such as AC/DC, Cheap Trick, Ugly Kid Joe, The Choirboys, Jimmy Barnes band, The Angels, Baby Animals and Rose Tattoo, with a revolving line-up of vocalists including Skenie from The Poor and Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets. This year, to celebrate Bon Scott's 76th birthday, Bon But Not Forgotten will be hitting the road to play a number of shows dubbed Powerage VS Back IN Black, playing both albums in full plus a select number of popular hits.Morley sat down with HEAVY to talk about the shows and what it means to play songs by the legendary AC/DC."We've been doing this show for... I think we're in the eleventh year since we did the very first one in Fremantle, Bon's old stomping ground of course,” Morley began. “We've done every year - apart from COVID that screwed us up a couple of times - but this time we decided rather than doing the best of every song we could from Accadacca - we'd be playing for hours if we went through all of them - so we thought we'd try something different. We're gonna do Back In Black versus Powerage and then we'll do a couple of hits towards the end of the night as well. We thought we would do a slightly different take on it, and Back In Black of course is AC/DC's tribute to Bon and depending on whether you wanna read into whether Bon wrote the lyrics or not and that never ending story, who knows! We thought it would be quite fitting. I mean, it's a cracker album anyway and Powerage is probably my favourite AC/DC album. It's hard to pick a favourite but that one from woah to go is an absolute cracker. It's all killer, no filler as they say."In the full interview, James talks more about what to expect from the shows, who will be singing this time around, his thoughts on Bon Scott and AC/DC, the early years of Bon But Not Forgotten, former members and why he has a rotating line-up, why BBNF stand out from other AC/DC tribute bands, what he personally gets out of playing other bands music as opposed to his own songs, the Van Halen tribute show playing with them, the Metal Gods shows later this year and more.

Clyde Kusatsu Interview, Part 1 It's an episode so epic that we had to split it into two parts! Our guest for this episode has been in over 300 shows and films, with a number that continues to grow, and that man is the legendary Clyde Kusatsu. This episode is so big that we barely discuss Star Trek in any way, so if you want to hear about Clyde's time in three episodes of Star Trek TNG as Admiral Nakamura, you will have to wait until next week. This week, Clyde explains how he got into acting and what he learned at Northwestern University, stories from his early theatrical career, and how it led to Hollywood, with a focus on Clyde's career in the 70s and early 80s. We start with a Star Wars story from the set of 1977's "Choirboys" with James Wood, playing Wong in the original "Doctor Strange" TV pilot, working with Toshiro Mifune on "Midway" and "The Challenge," "Paradise Road" with Glenn Close and Frances McDormand, the five episodes he did of the original "Kung Fu" series with David Carradine, James Hong, and Richard Loo, being Reverend Chong on "All in the Family," "Volunteers" with Tom Hanks, John Candy, and Nicholas Meyer, and much more! Stay tuned next week for the second part of this huge interview to bring us into the '90s and modern era of Clyde's career! We have to be thankful for Fifa Riccobono. She started off as a 16 year old secretary in the Alberts offices and worked her way up to office manager and CEO. Responsible for so many careers in the Australian music industry, and we're not just talking about AC/DC and the Angels. There was Rose Tattoo, John Paul Young, Choirboys, Flash & The Pan, Stevie Wright and even Ted Mulry Gang. Of course we'll get the story on her first meeting with Bon Scott, and the growth of AC/DC as a band both here and around the world. But also, what made Ted Albert such an influential leader of his time and how that rubbed off on the entire company. Can't wait to also ask her what new music she is keeping an eye on! Lockdown and gig cancellations presented challenges to all in the music industry. Many worked on new music, took up a day-job and some sat back on their millions and waited for covid to be over. Mark Gable and Choirboys started doing weekly live streams, to thousands of fans also locked down in their homes. After forming in 1978, and playing hundreds of gigs in (pretty much) every pub in Australia, this was a game changer for the band. They released a 9 track album from those covid performances, with a brand new song (first in 15 years). You'll hear the story on the origins of that song too. Mark is always a great chat, he'll explain where 'they went wrong' at Alberts Music in the early years of the band. Some great stories of pub riders from around the country, and what happened when he first met Angry Anderson!! This is Mark Gable from Choirboys, on The Rider with Becko

Joe Wambaugh, Jr. is a best-selling American writer known for his fictional and nonfictional accounts of police work in the United States. Several of his early novels were set in Los Angeles, and its surroundings, and featured Los Angeles police officers as protagonists. He has been nominated for four Edgar Awards (winning three), and was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America. The son of a police officer, Wambaugh was born in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17 (an element he works into several of his novels) and married at 18. Wambaugh is of Irish and German descent. Wambaugh received an associate of arts degree from Chaffey College and joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1960. He served for 14 years, rising through the ranks from patrolman to detective sergeant. He also attended California State University, Los Angeles, where he earned bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees. Wambaugh's perspective on police work led to his first novel, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Centurions_(novel) (The New Centurions), which was published early in 1971 to critical acclaim and popular success, while Wambaugh was still a detective. He later quipped that suspects would ask for his autograph. Soon turning to writing full time, Wambaugh was prolific and popular starting in the 1970s. He mixed writing novels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blue_Knight_(novel) (The Blue Knight), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Choirboys_(novel) (The Choirboys), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Marble (The Black Marble)) with nonfiction accounts of crime and detection (true crime): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Onion_Field (The Onion Field). His later books included https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Glitter_Dome (The Glitter Dome) (a TV-movie adaptation that starred https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Garner (James Garner) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lithgow (John Lithgow)), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Delta_Star (The Delta Star), and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lines_and_Shadows (Lines and Shadows).

The band was on the cusp of recording "Big, Bad Noise" which went on to be one of the best selling Australian albums of the 1980s. Brett's trademark melodic style helped propel hits such as "Run to Paradise", "Boys Will Be Boys" and "Struggletown" to the top of Australian charts. The Choirboys have been a fixture on the Australian music scene for over 30 years. Championed by music industry legend Ian "Molly" Meldrum, and having supported the likes of The Angels and Rose Tattoo and Cold Chisel on tour, Choirboys brought us iconic hits like Run To Paradise and Boys Will Be Boys. Now the guys are back on tour with their take on the hits of AC/DC. We talk to founding member Mark Gable about his career, his battles with depression and performing the legendary songs of Bon Scott. Choirboys have been an active, vibrant pub rock/hard rock band in their native Australia for over 30 years. They've had several major hits Down Under, including 1987's "Run To Paradise" which, get this, is the 11th best selling Australian single of the 80s! Surprisingly, they've never made much of a dent in America (and never tried too hard). We talk about the differences between Australian and American success, what kind of a lifestyle "Run to Paradise" has afforded them, and them being discovered by George Young, the older brother of Angus and Malcolm from AC/DC. I also pick his brain on some of my favorite artists hailing from the eastern hemisphere. The guy has quite the personality, enjoy! http://www.choirboys.net/

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the novelist Alice Thomas Ellis.A devout and traditional Catholic, she didn't begin writing until she was 42. The Sin Eater, that first novel, was her reaction to the changes in the Catholic Church after Vatican Two and channelled her anger at what she saw as the excesses of the 1960s. She's a woman of apparent contradictions. She wanted to be a nun, but fell in love and became a mother of seven instead. She's deeply religious but believes in ghosts and the supernatural and although her books are often triggered by anger, they are frequently tender and full of humour.
