We've had a number of syndication company founders on the podcast over recent years, all sharing stories about their childhood passion for racing. James Moss is no different. His interest in the sport was  ignited by trips to the track with his father and grandfather. Further motivated by the deeds of champion mare Sunline, James was completely “hooked” by the time he reached early twenties. Family and friends were not surprised when he launched Tricolours Racing and Syndications in 2016. We talk to James about his subsequent journey. He responds  to a high compliment afforded him by one of the company's trainers. He talks of a return to equities trading once the company was up and running. James talks of the family who've supported him every step of the way. The syndicator remembers his late father Jack whose love of the Roosters NRL team inspired the company name and racing colours. James remembers early days at the track and his fascination with the mighty Kiwi mare Sunline. He pays tribute to a  couple of his favourite jockeys from the era. James agrees the choice of his second favourite horse might raise an eyebrow or two. The forty six year old talks about his career in the field of equities trading. He acknowledges the input of his business partner Paul King and communications and administration assistant Maryanne Sayers. James remembers the purchase of his very first yearling, an Uncle Mo filly for $50,000 at the 2017 Karaka Sales. Trainer John Sargent was there with him. The Tricolours founder summarises the purchase and subsequent deeds of the company's best performers to date. James says he doesn't set out to buy fillies but agrees it probably looks that way.  He talks about recent winners Manuscript, The Novelist and The Playwright two geldings and one filly all sired by Written By. James elaborates on the potential of promising two year olds Autumn Blonde and Artistic Venture. He talks about his determination to buy at the right price. Syndication has become a very important component in the burgeoning Australian racing industry. Great to chat with one of its most professional operators.

Ep68 — Paul King of French & Jupps Maltings

The Pellicle Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 24, 2025 44:15

Until the start of 2024 I had never heard of French & Jupps, the UK's oldest continuously operating maltster, established in 1689. When I was offered to visit by my friend Jonathan Mitchell, who distributes their malt via his Northern Ireland-based company Get ‘Er Brewed, I just had to tag along. Malt has always been central to both my enjoyment and fascination with beer, and is my favourite ingredient. You can probably say that water is more important, and hops are more exciting (sorry, yeast) but it's malt that fuels my curiosity the most. Malt forms not only an important intersection between the technical side of brewing, and the creative, flavour-driven element, but for me also provides the most tangible connection to its agriculture – the fact that beer is a product of the land first, and the factory second.Located a 20-minute train ride from Tottenham Hale station in North London, French & Jupps is located in the picturesque town of Stanstead Abbotts, next to the River Lea. Although by no-means small, it's not quite as gargantuan as other maltings in the UK, such as those operated by Crisp, Simpsons, or Bairds. That's in part because they don't produce base malts, instead focusing exclusively on crystal, roasted and what's known as patent malt – the latter so-called because historically a permit was required to authorise its manufacture. French & Jupps produces everything from crystal malts – designed to add sweetness and body – to patent malts that can imbue beer with everything from notes of chocolate and coffee, to bitterness and astringency. You might not have heard of them as a maltster before, but you have almost certainly tasted their malt in beers such as Harvey's Mild, or Shepherd Neame Christmas Ale. But there's another reason you might not have heard of them, and that's because their product was, until recently, distributed via other maltsters, and often re-bagged so none of their branding was present. This is, in part, where managing director Paul King comes in. Joining the company just over four years ago, Paul has had an illustrious career in brewing, holding positions at Diageo, SAB Miller and Anheauser Busch, in roles that have seen him based in Japan, South Africa and the USA. Now, under his stewardship, French & Jupps are beginning to take a more prominent role in their own distribution, but also starting to tell their own, fascinating story in greater detail. I'm pleased to tell you I'm working on a written companion to this interview with Paul that will fill in the details of this maltster's history, while also explaining a bit more about roasted malt on a technical level, and how it's used to make certain beers taste and feel the way they do. Until then, please enjoy this delightful conversation with one of the most interesting people in the beer industry I've had the pleasure of meeting. It's about malt, yes, but also about understanding the vital role it plays in the beer we drink. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select.

Hey everyone, welcome back to another review and today, we'll be discussing the sequel to one of the most consistent franchises in films right now. Paddington and Paddington 2 are both some of the best family movies of the last decade. The thought of doing a third film is definitely terrifying because of how it could affect this franchise's track record but also because Paul King wasn't coming back for this third entry, although he still has a story credit. He went off to work in the Chocolate Factory. As I'm now studying in the UK, I had the chance to see Paddington in Peru. Tom Holland appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and with a drum roll announced that Spider-Man 4 officially begins shooting next summer. This information is coupled with an announcement from Sony that the release date is July 24, 2026. 20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell sat down with The Hollywood Reporter recently to discuss the future of their filmmaking division under Disney. Asbell seemed to Mirror other disney subsidiaries with it's assurance that a focus on franchise films is the path of the future. They will likely continue franchises such as Avatar, the Alien-verse, and Planet of the Apes, plus Kenneth Branagh's Agatha Christie mystery adaptations will continue though it's not clear if Branagh is attached. Among other films discussed were a Master and Commander prequel, Something with Die Hard, the next Predator movie (two are coming out and one is a secret), and the possibility of a Speed 3.  Writer Steven Knight has left the Rey Star Wars movie. Knight replaced the original screenwriters just last March, but this looks to be another delay to the development of the film. Notably Knight has been busy, working on the screenplays for the Peaky Blinders feature film, an upcoming biopic starring Angelina Jolie, and several tv series. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still slated to direct the future Rey movie. Venom: The Last Dance stumbled a bit in its choreography during last week's release in the U.S. with a $51 million dollar opening, but danced to success globally for a total $175 million including $46 million in China, which is the best superhero movie opening in that country since 2019. Sony is pleased with these numbers and well they should be, as the movie did take the top spot over Smile 2, which fell 59 percent. Universal's Oscar baby Conclave opened to $6.5 million, which tied it with The Wild Robot's fifth weekend's earnings. And the Andrew Garfield/Florence Pugh romantic drama We Live in Time came in fifth with $4.8 million. While promoting Robert Zemeckis' film Here, Paul Bettany confirmed that production begins on the Vision series in 2025. Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in Disney's upcoming Prince Charming movie with Paul King attached to direct. AppleTV+ has unveiled a new trailer for Severance season 2. Severance will premiere on the streamer on Jan. 17, 2025, followed by an episode every Friday through March 21 for a 10 episode season. Ahead of its season 6 debut in December, drama series Virgin River has been renewed for a seventh season at Netflix. With the early renewal, Virgin River becomes Netflix's longest-running current original scripted series. An action comedy film adaptation of retro video game Oregon Trail is in early development at Apple. Will Speck and Josh Gordon are attached to direct and produce. EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will provide original music and produce via their Ampersand production banner. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the movie will feature a couple of original musical numbers Michael Cera, William H. Macy, and Emilia Jones have joined the cast of Paramount's The Running Man. Netflix has renewed its animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft for a second season. The pickup was a relatively quick one, coming just two weeks after the eight-episode first season premiered. First images have surfaced from Spider-Noir, the Amazon series that will star Nicolas Cage in the title role. Sources tell Deadline that a new English-language Squid Game series is in the works at Netflix, with David Fincher coming on to develop it. Sony Pictures announced that Jumanji 3 is set to hit theaters Dec. 11, 2026. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan starred in the first two films and are expected to return, as is director Jake Kasdan, who helmed both features.

Speaking to producer Rosie Alison, VFX animation director Pablo Grillo and our new director Dougal Wilson (stepping into the shoes of Paul King, the man behind the first two Paddington films), Ali found out more about how everyone's favourite marmalade-loving bear ends up on our screens, makes us cry and leaves us really hankering for a particular kind of sandwich.

The prominent and wealthy Wales family dynamic had long been complicated but tensions rose when matriarch, Margaret Wales-King, and her husband, Paul King, both went missing. When it was discovered that Margaret's youngest son, Matthew, and his wife, Maritza, were the last to see Margaret and Paul, the rest of her children wanted answers. Instead, they got a lot of dramatics as Matthew would do nothing but sob and act out every time they spoke with him. Detectives quickly found some potential motives and the couple were the number one suspects. When their bodies were found, detectives had all the physical evidence they needed and when faced with murder charges, Maritza confessed everything she knew. When millionaire Australian socialite Margaret Wales-King and her husband, Paul King, disappeared in April 2002, friends and family became concerned something serious had happened to the older couple. Those fears and concerns were confirmed a few weeks later, when park rangers discovered their bodies in a shallow grave in Marysville, Victoria. Margaret and her husband had been clubbed and strangled to death. The press dubbed the murders “the society killings” and the tragedy captured the Australian public's attention for the ways it seemed to have been pulled right out of a classic mystery novel. Yet for all the couple's wealth, nothing appeared to be missing from their home and their bodies were discovered still wearing jewelry and in possession of credit cards and other valuables. Under the circumstances, police looked to Wales-King's children, who stood to gain a great deal of money in the event of Margaret's death. Within a week the case started to come together, and a suspect was revealed. While most of the family responded to the Wales-King murders in a manner one would expect, thirty-four-year-old Matthew Wales behavior was erratic, explosive, and suspicious. Upon interviewing Matthew, investigators learned he was the last person to have seen his mother and stepfather the night they were murdered, after having dinner with Matthew and his wife, Maritza. A few weeks later, after multiple interviews, Matthew Wales confessed to murdering his parents; though why he had done it came as a shock to everyone who knew the family.ReferencesAnderson, Paul, Philip Cullen, and Mark Butler. 2002. The story of Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory has been told and retold, both in the classic Roald Dahl children's books and in two hit films. Now, in the new movie musical Wonka, Timothée Chalamet takes on the iconic role. In this prequel, Wonka arrives in the big city with dreams of opening a chocolate shop, but his plans are complicated by a host of corrupt villains. Wonka is directed by Paul King, who also directed the Paddington films.
