⦁ Elvis Presley, You're the Devil in Disguise ⦁ Jeff Healy, Moodswing⦁ Rose Tattoo, Nice Boys ⦁ AC-DC, Shot In The Dark⦁ Dion, Told You Once in August ⦁ Dion, My Baby Loves To Boogie ⦁ Alanis Morisette, Reasons I Drink ⦁ Rosanne Cash, Crawl into the Promised Land, feat. A lot of people miss the old Kanye. The last time we reviewed his music was back in 2016 when he released the work-in-progress album “The Life Of Pablo.” Since then, Kanye has put out four albums: Ye, Kids See Ghost (with Kid Cudi), Jesus Is King, and Jesus Is Born (with the Sunday Service Choir). In the same period he’s also caused a media ruckus with his union to the Kardashian family and his foray into political punditry. His public persona has largely overshadowed his musical offerings. But what does the music communicate when we separate it from its messenger? We take the opportunity to listen with an open mind, especially to his most recent two albums. In the first half we examine his recent innovations as one of hip-hop’s best produced with the help of RapAnalysis.com’s Martin Connor. In the second half we speak with music industry veteran and gospel expert Naima Cochrane in order to place Kanye’s spiritual turn in a larger arch of gospel history. Songs Discussed Kanye West - Follow God, Closed On Sunday, Father Stretch My Hands, Freestyle 4, Every Hour, Golddigger, Famous, Jesus Is Lord, I Thought About Killing You Fat’s Domino - The Fat Man Run DMC - Walk This Way (ft. In this episode we hang out with the creator of Rapanalysis.com, the one and only "Rap Maestro" himself: Martin Connor, and get his take on his new book, YouTube series, and his struggles with talking about hip-hop in the ivory tower that is academia.
Martin Connor analyzes production in hip hop music living on his website, Rap Analysis. In his StorYe, he discusses the evolution of Kanye's production from soul-sample-heavy to weird-as-shit. Kanye’s soul samples have become the orientations through which all of his stories are experienced, even as they begin to occupy ever more fragmented parts of his structures, keys, or mixes. It seems, then, that soul samples for Kanye have always had a significance that is purely cultural, having come from a genre that was mostly nurtured and developed by Black artists themselves. It is just that, in his most recent albums, Kanye has brought this role of theirs fully to the forefront. If you would like to support the show, visit our Patreon page.
