Today, I have a conversation with my friend Matt Corker about living unapologetically yourself in all areas of your life. Matt opens up about his experience being a gay father and husband and how he had to become the queer role model and representation he needed to create a life he really wanted. Matt Corker and Chad Clark have a strength of bond that is undeniable—their love feels deep and true. Matt spent years in people & leadership development at lululemon and The Corker Collective, and is now the COO of global fashion & lifestyle brand Smash + Tess. Chad spent decades in retail and hospitality, getting his retail start at Banana Republic & Holt Renfrew before transitioning into restaurants as a maitre'd and, eventually, director of operations at The Hawksworth Restaurant Group. He's now a director at L'Abattoir. Chad was born in Michigan and raised in Montreal—his mother is Filipino and his father is Caucasian, and both were educators. He was a resilient teen who taught himself to deal with difficult situations at a young age, and that ability to handle hard situations with grace is a talent he brought to his career. Matt grew up on the east coast in Aurora, Ontario. His parents divorced when he was 10 and, around the same time, he was deep into musical theatre as a child, indulging in his love for singing and performing. He also got involved in leadership development at 13, a passion that transformed into what became his work down the line. In this conversation, we explore their different upbringings and stories of coming out to family and friends; the way their respective careers unfolded; what made Chad successful at running a restaurant floor; the future of the restaurant industry; Matt's experience in people development and what it taught him about humans & company culture; what it means to be courageously creative; how they became fathers to their son and the surrogacy journey; and more.

The London Welsh Rugby Club Podcast

Our guest this week is former Club captain Matt Corker.  Matt is 10th on the all time appearance list, but first on the all time league appearances for the club in his 9 year association with London Welsh.  Matt's rugby prowess came to light only when he went to University in Bath to study Chemistry and went on to play for English Universities; which is where he got noticed by Wasps. Wasps signed him after he graduated, but he found the path to the first team very challenging with many internationals and Lions in their squad, despite him wining young player of the year during his first year with them.  Matt was loaned out to Blackheath to further his rugby education and then came on loan to London Welsh where he made a lasting impression and signed for the club.  His playing consistency during his time with the London Welsh is remarkable and he only had a period out of the game during one season for quite a unique health problem.  Unfortunately for Matt; he didn't get the Testimonial he deserved at the club and signed for Richmond to help them ease their way into the Championship and this started his coaching journey; where he is now Coaching Canterbury RFC in National 2. These are crazy times, there's no denying that. With the majority of the world in quarantine, plans postponed or cancelled, businesses struggling, loved ones forbidden from seeing each other, there is a lot of uncertainty circulating and as human nature would have it, uncertainty breeds fear. But it doesn't have to be this way. When our circumstances feel out of our control, what we always have control over is our responsibility-- that is, our ability to respond rather than react. This episode goes into the difference between the two words in a way you may not have considered, as well as how to embrace the now as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, rather than closing our eyes until it's all over. In addition, we cover... How to deal with shifting timelines and agenda this season How and why yoga teacher training is for everyone Responsibility vs. reactivity - are you living "above or below the line" ? A more empowering outlook on life's happenings How to acknowledge who you truly are (not just what you do) Breaking up with toxic habits (that may be masked as "productivity") Finding gratefulness in the little things that we take for granted The truth behind “wherever you go there you are” Places AND people can have energy than can be overwhelming and stagnating What lesson can you take from this current experience? "Over the years, having now studied different yogic philosophies, world religions, neuroscience, and leadership philosophies — combined with my personal passion for reflection and the holistic approaches to movement and health — I've developed a greater appreciation for the messengers. In the early years of my coaching practice, I often laid out key principles I believed in on cards in front of me while I took calls with my clients. They served as guides to our conversation whenever things seemed to go off track. As I continued to explore the use of cards in different traditions, I kept seeking a deck that wasn't designed to tell me my future, or tell me if I should leave my job or my relationship. I wanted a deck rooted in principles. And I knew it was up to me to create it. After weeks of massive waves of inspiration, this deck came to life in the form of a really detailed spreadsheet. I called up Nadine Nevitt (a local Vancouver artist I am ridiculously inspired by) to ask if she wanted to work on this “small project” of bringing this spreadsheet of ideas to life. She was an enthusiastic yes … with neither of us realizing that it'd be a two-year adventure in the making. And now, it's yours. It feels surreal to be able to share this creation with you. Nadine has done an amazing job capturing all the nuances, the playfulness, the detailed requirements, and the feel of each card. My hope is that they are as pleasing to your eye as they are to your soul. Enjoy your inquest." ~ Matt Corker Matt Corker's Background Matt Corker is the CEO of The Corker Co and creator of The Inquest Deck, a set of cards designed to create deeper conversations about yourself with yourself.
