Welcoming Jacques Briam, Safari Guide and Wildlife Photographer, to the MNB podcast. Source: Wild about the Wild (link below) We caught up with Jacques a few months ago when he was in the Grumeti Reserve in the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania (you can even hear crickets if you are a careful listener). He was there for three months but is normally based in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa which is located just outside of Kruger National Park. Source: Wild about the Wild (link below) Our conversation is a thoughtful one that will hopefully provoke you to think about your interests and enthusiasm and finding more ways to follow them. We learn how despite his studies and, ultimately, becoming a graduate of Economics he followed his interest and enthusiasm which has led him to exactly where he is today and what he does.Sometimes we need reminders or little nudges to help us remember what we did not know we had forgotten and for Jacques, it was the experience in nature with animals. As a boy, he had lived in South Africa for a few years and always had an appreciation for it as well as a fascination with the natural world. This episode has advice for those who are going on a safari for the first time as well as a few words about how to “unmute” your senses. We learn about the change in perspective Jacques had when he went from living in a busy, bustling city like Madrid to a nature reserve in South Africa and how he tunes in daily to watch the sunset during what is called a “sundowner.” Source: Wild about the Wild (link below) May Jacques easy-going attitude and kind approach towards life inspire you to follow your interest and enthusiasm as well as continuing practice to unmute your senses each day. And, of course, give you insight into what it might be like to be a safari guide!Remember: UNMUTE THOSE SENSES! . Welcoming our next guest to the MNBP, Heather Thomas. Source: The Mindful Kitchen’s Instagram Movement medicine. Seasonal, local food. A visceral understanding that we are not separate from nature. Heather is not only a sweet friend of mine she is the brains and being behind The Mindful Kitchen. We met almost four years ago when she co-owned and co-ran a hyggeligt eatery in Copenhagen where regular environmental and food-related events were held. Two, in particular, that stand out to me include an evening where Sarah Britton of My New Roots planned and prepared a delicious meal for attendees (and fans!) and a Christmas gathering where we made Gingerbread cookies and fruitcake and learned about cinnamon farmers and basic holiday traditions. Having called Copenhagen home for six years, Heather has created an avenue, via The Mindful Kitchen, where she is able to combine her keen interest (and depth of knowledge) in environmental awareness and policy with her curiosity about how we, as individuals, can change our behavior to combat climate change and how we can feel more connected to our planet each time we prepare food or sit down for a meal. At The Mindful Kitchen “making a difference begins with understanding that nature isn’t out THERE, it is in YOU. By practicing nature relatedness much in the same way you practice yoga or meditate, this understanding will continue to grow.” Remember: “Change doesn’t happen overnight. Like anything, its practice that leads to progress. To eventually nail a Mozart concerto, you start by playing Twinkle, Twinkle. Nature relatedness is the same as mastering the piano. The Mindful Kitchen offers a blue print for how to establish a nature relatedness practice in the big city whilst doing something you do every day, and most likely brings you joy – eat.” (The Mindful Kitchen’s website.) Source: The Mindful Kitchen’s Instagram In this episode we touch on ecopsychology, how where you fall on the nature relatedness scale can be adjusted, and how “the more ones identity becomes nature related one begins to feel better. It actually correlates with mental well-being benefits (ex: less anxious, depressed, more creative, more focused, greater sense of empathy) while simultaneously creating different synapse connections in your brain. From the healthier M-E to the healthier W-E.Individuals who are nature relatedness practitioners seamlessly begin to adopt more eco friendly behavior. Heather shares with us how to create your own nature-relatedness practice. She lays out the three steps that can be fully incorporated into your day to day. We also get a peak into how she explores the world and her mind, body, and spirit. I hope you will enjoy this information-packed, smile, and though-inducing conversation. Welcoming Gina to the MNBP! She is curious. She is smart. And she has humor! Our conversation will make you laugh and will hopefully make you think twice about food, culture, and tradition. Gina is a writer. She is a visual story teller and teacher AND she is at the helm of the Heirloom Food Project (HFP). The concept behind the HFP is to pass on a resilient food culture to the next generation. And it aims for us to consider: What is our food culture? What is worth holding onto? What do I want to pass on? Our conversation includes discussion about the food culture in the U.S., which expands way beyond the golden arches, as the food culture in the U.S. is highly regional and depends on the background of each family. The HFP nudges us to look at our ancestors and think about what they ate while marrying it with current/modern habits. Gina gently reminds us to:Explore every day. And ask ourselves: How do I feel and what do I need? Then just do it. Gina writing for The International Denmark. Thanks for tuning in! Welcoming John Stewart, the 71st President of the Florida Bar to the MNBP! John was recently sworn in as President of the Florida Bar, the 3rd largest bar in the United States, after having served on the Young Lawyer’s Division, having been President of the Young Lawyer’s Division, and having served on the Board of Governors. He is a third generation Florida lawyer who has a great balance of being humorous while maintaining the seriousness that is required of lawyers. Our conversation begins with a few tidbits about his hometown, Vero Beach, Florida, which can be described as the perfect place for people who do not like cold weather and who enjoy being outdoors. Our conversation was a fun one with lots of laughs and I hope that you will enjoy getting to know John on a better level. He shared about his first post-college, non-law job abroad that provided him great perspective about the world. We learn not only how he spends his time (between his law practice and being a Dad) but how he has been heavily active and involved with the FL Bar for over the past twenty years. It was so refreshing to hear how he has, at this point, reflected on his career, what he has learned, and in general, his thoughts about how he has gotten to where he is. While he has worked hard, he shared with us that he has taken chances and that they were well worth it. He provides great advice for young lawyers and seasoned practitioners alike. Florida lawyers are lucky to be members of a bar that is led by such a kind and down to earth leader. The next episode of the MNBP features Meredith Jones, a former public defender and small firm owner, who followed her enthusiasm and continues to by helping lawyers manage their stress through yoga-based-mindfulness. Currently based in Minneapolis, MN with a move to her homestate of Florida planned this summer, Meredith owns and operates a beautiful “law adjacent endeavor” called Do Justly Now. This allows her to work primarily with lawyers (and others interested!) where she teachers them “to decrease stress and increase job satisfaction” through yoga-based-mindfulness. Practicing law is very stressful and in years past there were not as many resources, discussions, and individuals like Meredith working with lawyers to help them manage their stress, positively and in a productive manner, so it is refreshing to hear and learn more about the work Meredith is doing. We learn how she fell into yoga during law school and how she has forged this path for herself taking into account her past experience as a practitioner and her passion for yoga. Our conversation even touches on a few pointers Meredith shares for students who are studying for the Florida Bar Exam so be sure to listen until the end when we learn these. If you are in the legal profession, keep Do Justly Now and Meredith’s work on your radar and be on the look out for her upcoming creation titled: “Meditate, Eliminate, and Regulate: three steps to decreasing stress in your law practice.” Also, if you are interested in working with Meredith to cultivate and have your very own home yoga practice protocol designed for you, get in touch with her. Welcoming friend and former colleague, G.C. Murray to the MNBP! By way of a brief introduction, G.C. is a kind, smart, and all around great guy.He works as the Special Counsel at the Florida Justice Association (FJA). If you are not familiar with the FJA, it is an important, plaintiff trial lawyer association that advocates on the behalf of injured citizens, making sure that the courts are accessible and that the civil justice system is protected for every Floridian. When I was I law student I worked at the FJA so, fortunately, I was able to contribute to the unique cause and mission of the FJA and it was where I met G.C.. As a young kid, G.C. knew he wanted to be a lawyer. A main contributor that propelled him in the legal direction was his father, he was an attorney (he is now currently a judge). Our conversation covers a lot of ground! From his favorite thing about Tallahassee, Florida, the town he has called home for the past ten or so years to founding the Innovative Community Engagement Foundation (ICE Foundation) to even sharing with us his personal health journey and "scare” that led him to change his habits and take his health a lot more serious. The changes have led to a light, happy feeling, a different outlook, and loss of weight. We also talked about what he believes to be as the biggest challenges that young lawyers face today versus young lawyers twenty years ago and he even shared a few words of wisdom for fellow young lawyers. I hope you will enjoy my conversation with G.C.! And that you will more learn about the ICE Foundation so that, if you are in the state of Floria, you might be able to do some community service! The foundation’s mission is the following: “to stimulate different segments of society through mentorship, service, and professional development. We offer a unique approach to community service specifically tailored toward millennials. With chapters all throughout Florida, there are several opportunities for engagement.” If you are interested in getting involved, don’t be shy to contact them! Last November they fed over 500 people at Thanksgiving and in December they had their Annual Share the Warmth Event which is an event that supplies students with clothing for cool weather during the holiday season. Their flagship office is in Tallahassee but they are located throughout the state of Florida and hope to expand to D.C. and Chicago sometime in the near future. “At a certain point you have to focus on you.” - G.C. on finding ways to take care of yourself Subscribe: iTunes Listen and subscribe in iTunes: Show memo:Florida Justice Association (FJA)Innovation Community Engagement Foundation Meditation AppsFlorida Young Lawyers Division A huge shout out to Na'an Stop the jammin' band from Boulder, Colorado for the accompanying podcast music. Welcoming Danielle Levy to the MNBP! Danielle is a bubbly, kind spirit who works as a registered holistic nutrition practitioner. I think you will agree with me when I say that you can hear in her voice how passionate and excited she is about staying active, staying in tune with her body through exercise, food, and journaling, and helping others tune in too. Based in Montreal, Canada, she has a great home base - Apartment Therapy toured her apartment and it is so cute! She recently started a small food product business called Spice & Seed. Although I have not yet tried her seed mix, I have a feeling it is delicious! She also shares with us a little bit of advice for someone who is new to plant-based eating and/or is curious about what it means. In this episode Danielle tells us what she does in her capacity as a registered holistic nutrition practitioner whether working one on one with clients or through hosting cooking courses/other community events that lay the backbone for how she educates the community and on a greater scale, the world about nutrition and the role it plays in our every day. She shares what is most gratifying in her work and learning about how she lives and stays in her Natural Beet was a pleasure. I hope you will enjoy our conversation and perhaps take away something - whether it is remembering to add an extra veggie to your plate or to be a little more patient with yourself :) Thanks for spending time with us, Danielle! Welcoming Sabrina to the MNBP! It was so enjoyable to spend a few hours with Sabrina recording this episode as we munched on Sabrina's homemade banana bread and fresh fruit and sipped on tea. As you will hear, Sabrina has a beautiful voice and had much to share with us about finding balance as a busy Masters student at Copenhagen Business School.Sabrina works and tries to find a balance in maintaining her studies, work, and her interest in yoga, meditation, and cooking. You will learn how Sabrina first became interested in yoga as it quickly became an outlet for her as she learned how to cope with the pressure and stress she felt at business school. We both agree that if you are generally interested in and want to explore something more whether it is yoga, meditation, or another avenue, talk to people who are doing what you would like to do or who are interested in the same thing as this will help you along and provide you a bit of guidance and you will not feel so alone.I hope this episode will serve as a source of inspiration and a nudge to those interested in yoga and/or meditation who have not felt comfortable learning or experiencing more. Welcoming Mr. Michael Higer to the MNBP! Source: The Florida Bar, International Law Section As a practicing attorney for over thirty years and Immediate Past President of the Florida Bar (2017-2018), Mr. Higer brought his experience, perspective, and kind heart to our conversation. This episode is a special one and came together in a serendipitous way, thank you G.C.! We recorded live in Key West, FL just as he concluded his term. The primary topic of this episode is the most important initiative during his time as President of the Florida Bar:the mental health and wellness of Florida lawyers Despite my limited and inexperienced perspective as a young lawyer, I feel the stress, anxiety, and the pressure that accompanies working as a lawyer. Fortunately, due to experiences in my life, I am aware of it, how I deal with it, and on a daily basis, take steps to cope in healthy ways as well as continue in the direction of being of service to others who need support. Mr. Higer shared with us the ways in which The Florida Bar is supporting their members. What is important to remember is that the conversation now exists! Whereas in years past for attorneys struggling, there was no conversation.I hope that Michael's words hit a cord in you so that you can recognize in yourself, if you are a practicing attorney or not, when you need to take a stand. If you work as an attorney in Florida or in any other state and you are struggling with stress, anxiety, and taking care of yourself, I encourage you to speak up, reach out, ask for help. It is worth it - you are not alone. Welcoming wonder woman, Sam Vander Wielen, attorney turned entrepreneur to the MNBP! Sam practiced as a corporate attorney for five years before she started her career as an entrepreneur. Prior to finding her groove working with women online entrepreuners to ensure their businesses and websites are up to legal par Sam worked at a health coach and in corporate wellness. To say she is a go-getter is an understatement, Sam is a DO-er in all senses of the word. Learning more about Sam's journey and how it has beautifully blossomed into where she is today makes me feel excited and totally in awe of the work she has done in carving out her niche business. Sam shares with us the importance of finding what makes you tick and being open and curious as well as playful as your business starts to take shape and develop. In addition to running her own business, Sam loves to travel and experience hygge moments. Living in Denmark I am very familiar with hygge and its presence in my daily life. I hope you will enjoy Sam's words, our conversation, and if you are curious about working with Sam, do not hesitate in reaching out to her. She is extremely knowledgable and kind. Welcoming Scott Rogers to the My Natural Beet Podcast! Scott works as the "founder and director of the Institute for Mindfulness Studies and of the University of Miami School of Law's Mindfulness in Law Program." He shares mindfulness and other contemplative practices with those in high stress and high consequence environments - including lawyers and law students. The first time I was introduced to Scott's work was when my Dad shared with me a little about Scott's "Mindfulness and the Law" presentation he gave over the phone to those who attended an Inns of Court meeting in Pensacola, Florida. I remember feeling happy to learn that someone (this guy!) was taking the time to talk to busy lawyers and judges about the importance of present moment awareness - mindfulness - and how starting a mindful practice would leave you feeling content, calm and in general, feeling more at ease while practicing law. Scott travels all over the United States introducing this unique tool to lawyers and lawyers-to-be. “You will spread it most effectively by embodying it.” - on living a mindful and healthy life This episode is insightful and hopeful because Scott shares with us many of the steps that are currently being taken in legal education and in the legal profession to promote law student and lawyer wellbeing. Scott even mentions the work being done by current Florida Bar President, Michael Higer, who is addressing lawyer wellness and mental health. To give you some background on Scott's work in mindfulness it is important to note that he along with Dr. Amishi Jha are the program directors at UMindfulness which is the University of Miami's Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative where research is conducted on the efficacy and benefits of short-term mindfulness practices. This initiative was started in 2010 and has been evolving ever since. UM's mindfulness initiative is a testament to the open minded-ness of the administration and receptiveness of the students, faculty, and surrounding community. It was a natural sign of growth when the law school decided to include Mindfulness and the law programs. At the University of Miami School of Law, there are at least four courses offered: Mindful Leadership, Mindful Ethics, Mindfulness in the Law (each semester), Mindfulness in Motivating Business Compliance in the Law and there are also a few opportunities to practice present moment awareness around the law school campus. For example, a weekly mindful walk around the lake, a short stretch and mindful movement the in student lounge, and a sitting practice with faculty. As a former law student who attended a once-a-week meditation group - thanks to Professor Krieger at Florida State University College of Law - I am in awe of the resources available at UM School of Law. What a wonderful tool to equip students with and as a student, what a wonderful tool to be equipped with! Here is to a more mindful and kind legal profession and to the development and support of law students as they matriculate through their rigorous studies to one day become a member of the legal community! I might add that this is the first MNB episode that used the channel of FaceTime video while recording the conversation. Usually my guests and I connect over FaceTime audio and although I was a bit nervous to have the camera on me the entire conversation, I found our conversation was more engaging and I even felt more connected in the conversation. Thanks Scott for flipping the camera on and inadvertently pushing me a bit outside of my comfort zone! And I am aware that this episode might suggest how important sleep is to me because I mention my lack of it it a few times, please forgive :) “Mindfulness is one form of cultivating greater present moment awareness and there are many.”Subscribe: iTunes Listen and subscribe in iTunes: Show memo:Scott's websiteScott's bookUMindfulness at the University of MiamiFairchild Botanical Garden “You will spread it most effectively by embodying it.” - on living a mindful and healthy life“We don’t know what tomorrow brings so let’s not miss this moment because that is where the meaning in life resides.” A huge shout out to Na'an Stop the jammin' band from Boulder, Colorado for the accompanying podcast music. Welcoming Hayley Wood to the My Natural Beet Podcast! Hayley is a licensed esthetician and works as a therapeutic skin coach (TSC) in Los Angeles, California. She works both in person and via Skype with clients who do not live in the area. Hayley coined the TSC because she felt that the existing terms (esthetician, facialist) limit what she truly does which is "coach and guide people beyond their skin care treatments to truly help transform their skin. Half the battle is knowing someone is there for you and has the willingness to support the ups and the downs." What drew me towards learning more about what Hayley does was her kind and approachable manner. She is knowledgeable about what she does, has years of experience, and you can tell she is passionate about what she does! Our conversation begins with how she got into skin care, what she is currently doing, and she even shares with us her top three pieces of advice for anyone interested in taking better care of their skin. I hope you will enjoy learning about Hayley and what she does. And remember if you are in need of a TSC, she is your gal! "Skin care is an opportunity for self care." Welcoming Katie Dalebout to the My Natural Beet Podcast! She is cute, isn't she? YEAH!If you are not already familiar with Katie, let me introduce you to her. She is resident of New York City, a green apple-lover and she is not only the host of her five-season, exceptional podcast called Let it Out, she is a published author of her book called Let It Out, A Journey Through Journaling. Both are unique outlets that she created and continues to contribute to. Her podcast has over 200 episodes with extremely interesting guests and the topics range from self acceptance and gratitude to community and creativity. Having read her book from cover to cover, I highly recommend it! There are 55 journal prompts which lead you to getting quiet and honest with yourself as you dive deep into your journal. Don't forget to get hygge - create your cosy space ;) Journaling and writing by hand has always been a way for me to slow down, even stop, and think about how I feel in the moment about what is happening around me. If are you skeptic to journaling and cannot fool with writing by hand (hey, Mama Kay!) I encourage you to try it out. Welcoming Law Professor and Bar Coach Phillip (Phil) Sandon to the My Natural Beet Podcast! My final semester of law school, December 2014, I was in Professor Sandon's bar prep class. Sitting in his classroom day in and day out, I did not realize his unique approach to bar exam preparation. I also did not realize how thorough his experience and expertise was regarding the material on the bar exam. It was only after I finished the course that I realized that I should have heeded to ALL of his advice on how best to situate and prepare myself to learn and understand the black letter law.Preparing yourself for the bar exam can quickly start to feel overwhelming. I know this from experience - I prepared three separate times. While you might be in the interim waiting for your results period or you might be gearing yourself up for the July examination, it is never too early to begin thinking about how to utilize stress management, mindfulness, and organization to set yourself up for success. Bar exam or not these tools are critical in practicing law and, I would argue, in staying on top of the tasks and challenges that you face daily both in your professional and personal life. If you are interested in support in this area of your preparation, please feel free to contact me!Utilizing and mixing the above mentioned tools with a solid foundation and approach towards learning and applying black letter law, you soon have a recipe for success! This is where Phil's work comes to play and how I realized, over time, how niche and special his work is. When you are preparing for an intense two day exam it helps to feel as if you have studied, read, and (hopefully) remembered every testable concept under the sun. As a professor, Phil helps you to do exactly that!Last December, we sat down together and had this conversation. I was able learn more about Phil and his work with students as they prepare for the bar exam. Phil has been teaching and bar coaching since 1998. He finds his role as a bar professor and coach to be rewarding financially as well as gratifying in helping people succeed in their goals. You might even wonder how he began to teach students during this unique preparation period, if you listen to the episode you will find out! After years of experience, Phil also includes a few tips that might contribute to your success. Professor Sandon's voice used to accompany me at all times of the day when I was studying for the bar - from when I was walking outside for fresh air to before falling asleep - (I recorded a lecture or two ;)) so I hope that you will enjoy our conversation and perhaps take something away from it if you recently sat for the bar or will soon sit for the bar. Welcoming Leonardo Arias Vera, Leo, to the My Natural Beet Podcast! A few months ago when I was in the U.S., I was fortunate enough to spend time with Leo. Shake, shake, shake! At least for 30 seconds. Chia seeds tend to cluster together quickly, so this step is important.3- Add coconut yogurt and shake again, until everything is well combined.4 – Leave it in the fridge overnight, or for at least 4 hours. That’s it! The best part is that in the morning, you have breakfast ready to go. All it needs are your toppings of choice. Mine are peanut butter and fresh fruit. The possibilities are endless: granola, jam, goji berries, you name it. Just something to add a little sweetness. You can also add 1 tablespoon of maple syrup to the mix, but I prefer to keep mine plain and just add ripe fruit. The next guest on the MNBP is vibrant and committed to making an impact in this world. Not only is Matt an avid yogi and an open-minded world traveler, he co-owns a business with his sister called The Corker Co. where together they run a people consulting firm. They want strong leaders to have the opportunity to work with great people so they recruit people to join their client's team or develop their client's current existing team through custom program development or through an online manager training called Manager Start Line. From working at Lululemon to developing and creating the The Corker Co., the dynamic duo have been working together for two full years. Matt shared his experience in facing negative self-talk, overcoming it, and learning how to use it to your advantage. We discussed the notion of "shipping your ideas." He is a published author writing a book called: "Getting Over the Rainbow." This book is written in a way that if you picked it up and flipped it open to one page you would get something out of it. We also talked about his "100 before 100" - I was challenged to create my own. The fifth guest on the the MNB Podcast is a Rewilding guru who loves to be in nature and move her body. Whether it is by sprint-dash-scream-grassing, dancing, or teaching yoga, Teela truly lives in her natural beet. She teaches others how to access and embody their human experience by using their humanity, body, and senses. While it sounds simple, in her work, Teela dives deeper and helps her clients get to the core of where they feel fear and where they might be holding onto restrictive beliefs. Teela is a seeker who encourages us to ALWAYS follow our enthusiasm and to never ignore it - no matter how silly it seems to you or anyone else. When you follow your enthusiasm, your life seems to blossom! Her fundamental message is that you belong here and that "when we fully embrace our humanity we come home to ourselves, to our ancient body-wisdom, to our soul's voice, of being alive."This episode is good for anyone interested in learning about rewilding, how to rewild themselves, and for anyone who has experienced Bell's Palsy. Today's guest is a mama bird, lawyer who loves to travel the world and explore new surroundings. We were introduced by a mutual friend, thank you Ashley!, and I felt instantly comfortable and as if I had known her for ages from the moment we synced up. Her energy is contagious and from her we can learn oh-so-much. For example, she reminds us to ask ourselves what we really want (out of life and career), how to always choose positivity - in this moment - and how to approach challenging set backs. As you will hear, Okeoma has her own podcast called The Happy Lawyer Project where she helps lawyers find their "happy." My next podcast guest is a remarkable woman and lawyer. This episode makes me feel recharged, happy, and I am grateful that Michelle shared her experience and what she has learned from being a lawyer on the My Natural Beet Podcast. Whether you are a young lawyer, a mom, a busy professional or anything in between, I feel certain that something Michelle shared will resonate with you. Whether it is learning where and how she began her career as a lawyer, what she does for a quick recharge, how she deals with difficult colleagues, or what makes her feel her happiest self, this episode is full of jewels of wisdom.A few of my favorite take-aways from the conversation include her excitement to "open more doors for women and hopefully more will follow" on her recent election to be the President-Elect Designate of the Florida Bar, the importance of "giving up the idea of perfection," and the importance of taking "time for yourself" even when you are a busy professional.
