This year marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11 - a series of airline hijackings and suicide attacks on targets in the United States - over 3,000 people were killed in New York, when two planes were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Centre; 184 people died when another plane hit the Pentagon, and a further 40 people died in Pennsylvania, where another hijacked plane crashed in a field after passengers attempted to retake control - that plane was believed to be heading to the Capitol building in Washington DC. In New York, more than 400 police and firefighters were killed. As we listen to the thoughts of one person who was there, it's clear the passing of 20 years has done little to dull the painful memories. Anglican Priest Rev'd Dr Glynn Jones is on a short-term loan until the end of November, to assist the local ministry team, caring for the churches in North and South Ramsey, Maughold, The Dhoon and Bride, whilst they are without their own resident Vicar. But in his home Diocese of Carlisle, Rev'd Glynn is 'Chaplain to the Chaplains' - in conversation today, we find out exactly what that means. And lastly, are you ready to Ride and Stride? It's a new charity fundraiser, coming to the Island next Saturday 18 September - Rosemary Clarke has all the information, and you can download maps, a list of churches on the Island, and sponsor forms by going to the Diocesan website - https://www.sodorandman.im Hymns this week are 'Brother, Sister, let me serve you' and 'Praise my soul, the King of Heaven' The piano music is Einuadi's Nefeli, played by Gareth Deakin who - in addition to being a pianist - is also Musical Director of Sheeanyn Millish choir. No one could fail to be moved by the pictures and reports coming from Afghanistan this week - but local Christian Aid representative Louise Whitelegg was determined to put the despair she felt, into positive action. So in a matter of days, she had organised, and advertised Island-wide, a 4-hour Prayer Vigil - last Thursday evening in Trinity Methodist Church at Rosemount in Douglas - praying for Afghanistan and for Haiti - one country devastated by violence, the other devastated by earthquakes, storms and political unrest which is hampering the delivery of essential aid. On today's programme Louise shares her thoughts, music and a Bible passage, and Reverend Richard Hooton, Minister at Trinity Church, adds one of the prayers specially written for the Afghan crisis. Within 48 hours of the vigil being advertised, Louise had received over £27,000 in donations for the work of Christian Aid in Afghanistan and Haiti. If you would like to contact Louise for more information you can text or phone 07624-474275. This week we start a new feature - Why do you love YOUR church? I'm asking this same question to three members of Peel Methodist Church - will their answers be the same? Or very different? And if what they say interests you, Peel Methodist Church in Atholl Street has an Open Afternoon on Saturday 28 August from 2pm to 4pm - pop in and take a look! There's home made cakes and tea/coffee too. There's a reminder about Phil Craine's pilgrimage over the Big Bank Holiday Weekend - walking from Rushen Abbey to Maughold in 4 daily sections - phone him on 07624-437248 if you'd like to know more - but the beauty of the walk inspired local poet John Dog Collister to write an evocative poem - and you can hear it on today's programme. Plus there's notice board news, and some good music too! Your hymn choices, for inclusion in future programmes, and items for the notice board, can all be sent to me via email - judithley@manxradio.com

After an absence of two years due to the pandemic, Canon Philip Gillespie is back, spending summer on the Island, and taking care of the churches in Ramsey and Peel whilst resident Parish Priest Fr Brian O Mahony is on holiday. Canon Philip will be warmly remembered for his time on the Isle of Man as Parish Priest of St Mary of the Isle in Douglas, and as senior priest with oversight of all the Island's Catholic Churches. Now the Rector of the Pontifical Beda College in Rome, Canon Philip reflects on life during Italian lockdown, and shares some Scripture, prayers and hymns from the Songs of Praise service in St Adamnan's - Lonan Old Church - which he led earlier in the week. Phil Craine is also a guest on the programme, with an invitation to walk the Triskelion Way, over the long Bank Holiday Weekend - 27th - 30th August. The full pilgrimage route of 36 miles which stretches from Rushen Abbey to Maughold, will be split into 4 sections - one for each day of the weekend - so you can choose to do as much or as little as you wish. No charge and no need to book - just a warm welcome for all. The steamer Victoria from Fleetwood for Belfast had run aground at Port Mooar in Maughold. Edward and Isabella Christian of Baldromma were fined for keeping goods from the wreck. However, two servants at Baldromma stashed away more loot in the adjacent churchyard. This led to a parochial visitation and remonstrance by Bishop Thomas Vowler Short with the police and other officials on 21st March 1842. In this final edition of At Your Service for 2020, Bishop Peter reflects on the unique challenges presented by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic - how did we make those early decisions? and what have we learned in the months that followed? And with so much uncertainty still around us, is it truly possible to wish each other a happy New Year? Clare Faulds has been on pilgrimage - during December she walked 45 miles from Rushen Abbey to Maughold. That's about half the distance which Mary and Joseph walked, from their home in Nazareth, to Bethlehem where the child Jesus was to be born. But connecting with the story of the birth of the Christ-child was not the main reason for Clare's pilgrimage - so what WAS it? We find out in a conversation with Clare in Maughold on Christmas morning, at the end of her pilgrimage - and also discover why she chose to sleep rough, on the coldest night in the last two years! Our music this week is mostly local - two pieces from the Choir of King William's College - the popular carol 'O Little Town of Bethlehem' and Boris Ord's setting of the 15th century verse 'Adam lay ybounden' Their Musical Director is Steve Daykin and the organist is Stuart Corrie. There's also a setting of The Lord's Prayer by Men Aloud together with Boys Aloud And if you'd like to choose a favourite hymn for inclusion in a future programme, I'd love to hear from you - email me with details - judithley@manxradio.com

The famous Port St Mary Beach Mission has been providing two weeks of fun, games, friendship and Bible teaching every year since 1901 - only missing the years of the two World Wars! It's an impressive record, and still attracts around 400 local children and young people each summer. It's organised by Scripture Union Ministries Trust, and the Beach Mission Headquarters are at Mallmore on the Promenade in Port St Mary. When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Beach Mission Leaders David and Evelyn Stewart realised that it wouldn't be possible to run the usual event in August - so they set to work to take it on-line - creating Virtually Beach Mission this year, with resources and activities (and videos) all available via the website - www.psmbm.org.uk The relaxation of some Covid-19 restrictions now means that, as well as Virtually Beach Mission on-line, a limited number of actual activities will take place on the beach at Port St Mary during the afternoons of the Mission fortnight - 3rd to 14th August - and you can find details of them on the website too. So, David and Evelyn Stewart - Virtually Beach Mission leaders - are At Your Service today - sharing their own story, the story of the Scripture Union Beach Mission, and a taster of what Virtually Beach Mission has to offer - they also lead a time of reflection and prayer based around a Bible verse which is particularly appropriate for the Beach Mission. Bob Carswell delivers a weekly programme of great Manx Gaelic broadcasting and entertainment. William Kennish has seen a change in his native Maughold on his return after 20 years in the Royal Navy. However, he looks back to his early days, playing truant in his favourite haunts, with a surprising history of his schoolmistress. Our story in Manx is also a reminiscence, as a young widow looks back, but learns to look forward with renewed spirit. We're going nowhere this week as we discuss an airline which has stopped flying, a candidate withdrawing from an election, a defender scoring goals and sewage that isn't going where people want it to. Plus we look back to 1940 when a ship ran aground at Maughold and a piano was required to help the war effort. And Katie brings us the history of the Old Courthouse.

And are local authority mergers a sign of government led reform, or complete inaction? We hear the opposing views of Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer, and Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper.

This episode we encounter another saintly curse, this time at the hands of St. Maughold, the patron saint of the Isle of Man, and on our way to that miracle story, we catch up on the trials and tribulations of the Manx dynasty of Godred Crovan since we last saw them in Ep. 44. As a bonus, we'll also hear the origin story of St. Maughold, a.k.a. MacCuil the bandit, a.k.a., Cyclops, as recorded in Muirchu's Life of St. Patrick.
