This past June, Peter published his most recent book, Reflecting on History: How The Industrial Revolution Created Our Way of Life.  When we turn on a television, use a computer, heat dinner in a microwave oven, open a refrigerator, drive a car, or take an antibiotic, Peter explains that we are utilizing technologies with roots dating back to the Industrial Revolution in England 300 years ago.  Peter wasn't around back then, but with a razor-sharp mind at 98 years of age, he has plenty of actionable insights to share on what makes for successful inventions and how to build and run a successful business. Monday Morning Radio is hosted by the father-son duo of Dean and Maxwell Rotbart. Making a New Year's resolution is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, setting goals and setting out to improve yourself and your life is a very positive action to take. However, making unachievable resolutions is just setting you up for stress and disappointment.   Why do we start off the New Year by making resolutions we can't keep?   Let me start off by saying I'm actually a fan of New Year's resolutions. Every year, I reevaluate my current goals and set new ones for the year. However, I'm not a fan of unreasonable resolutions that set you up for failure. Or of the social pressure that comes every January 1st. Pressure does not create opportunity. It just creates stress.   On average, Americans make the same resolutions every year: lose weight, work out, eat better, quit smoking, save money and drink less. There's nothing wrong with any of those resolutions. But I'm curious about the underlying reasons for them.   If you want to lose weight to look good in Instagram pictures or quit smoking so your partner stops bothering you about it- you're more likely to break that resolution quickly. But if you want to lose weight to feel better about yourself and more content in your life, you may actually succeed! We need to start thinking about the intent behind these resolutions. Why do you want to achieve this goal?    This episode is not about ragging on anyone who sets a New Year's resolution. It's about learning how to make resolutions that help you improve your life. I don't want your goals to set you on a shame spiral. I want to help you achieve all your goals in a healthy way. We need to dig a little deeper into the “why” before we can get to the “how”. What I discuss: [00:05:07] The First New Year's Resolutions [00:06:54] Ten Most Popular Resolutions [00:08:15] Why do we make New Year's Resolutions? Here's a shocking statistic you probably didn't know about Thanksgiving meals: An average Thanksgiving plate contains about 80-90 grams of fat which is as much as  1⅓ sticks of butter – and it contains on average 75 grams of sugar, which is equivalent to almost 20 teaspoons of pure sugar. Plus, the average person will gain between two to four pounds after the Thanksgiving feast. This isn't even getting into the actual ingredients being used in the traditional thanksgiving foods – especially a traditional stuffed turkey.    This doesn't mean we need to cancel Thanksgiving – it simply means it's time to rethink what your thanksgiving meals look like and how to approach the holiday in a more sustainable way. You wouldn't eat a bag of dried pellets made of meat by-products. So why would you feed it to your pet? Just like humans, animals need proper nutrition to thrive and live happy, healthy lives. Most store-bought pet foods consist of low-quality meats, fillers and preservatives.   Pet food manufacturers are constantly trying to make the food-making process cheaper. So that means cheap ingredients and cheap packaging. All of that results in poor nutritional health for your furry friends.   This one isn't tough, guys. We need to make sure our pets are eating whole, nutritional foods. I choose a plant-based diet for myself, but I know a vegan diet isn't best for my German Shepherd, Chaga. So I give him a fresh, mostly raw diet consisting of 75% meat and 25% veggies and ancient grains.    In this episode, I'll give you some tips on how to use fresh food for your dog and some fresh pet food companies that I love. I discuss the gross history of pet food companies, signs that your pet has a poor diet, why raw food is best for pets, studies that reveal the horrifying ingredients in dry pet food, if grain-free is better for your dog, what foods are best for cats and dogs, and great fresh pet food companies.   What I discuss: (0:02:02) - The history of pet food, its impact on pet health, and the need to treat our pets as family members (0:09:12) - The dangers of processed pet food, the lack of regulations, the questionable ingredients permitted in pet food, and the potential toxins in pet food (0:23:04) - The importance of conscious decision-making when it comes to the products we give our pets   Thank you to our sponsor: Therasage: Go to www.therasage.com  and use code DARIN at checkout for 15% off. If you live in the United States, you've most likely celebrated Halloween – you've gone trick or treating, you've carved a pumpkin, you've dressed up in costumes – you've done it all. While this holiday can be fun and add some excitement to our lives, it also comes at a cost.    For example, did you know in the United States, most of the 900,000 tons of pumpkin produced annually will be trashed, rather than used as food or composted? This enormous waste adds to the already critical global food waste crisis. Overall, around 1.3 billion tons of global waste are created each year. (World Economic  Forum, 2019)    This is just a small glimpse into the amount of waste created from this holiday, let alone the impact it can have on your health. From pumpkins and candy to costumes, decorations, and more, we need to look at the global impact of this holiday from every angle.   That's why in this episode of Fatal Conveniences™, we're going to explore the holiday Halloween and how we can start to celebrate in a more sustainable and health-conscious way.    What I discuss: 02:10 - Evaluating the Ecological Footprint of Halloween  07:21 - Exploring the Intersections of Halloween, Environmental Sustainability, and Public Health 23:75 - How Can We Move Towards an Eco-friendly and Health-conscious Halloween Celebration   Thank you to our sponsors:   Bite: Go to trybite.com/DARIN20 or use code DARIN20 for 20% off your first order.   Therasage: Go to www.therasage.com  and use code DARIN at checkout for 15% off.   Don't forget…   You can order now by heading to darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book or order now on Amazon   Find more from Darin: Website: https://darinolien.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Darinolien/ Book: https://darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book/ Down to Earth: https://darinolien.com/down-to-earth/   Reliable sources where you can learn more: Halloween can have spooky environmental consequences  Why Halloween Is Terrible For The Environment  The Environmental impact of Halloween: What the jack-o'-lantern story says  about food waste in our society  Halloween candy comes with hidden environmental costs  13 Sustainable Halloween Tips That Are Anything But Boo-Ring 4 Ways To Make Your Halloween As Sustainable As It Is Stylish

Have you ever heard of Apeel before? Whether you have or haven't, You may have already eaten a piece of fruit at some point that was covered in it.    Apeel is a plant-based coating or ‘peel' that helps produce stay fresh for longer by slowing water loss, preventing oxidation and protecting against environmental stress, which are the primary causes of food spoilage. It uses a microscopic amount of Monoglycerides and Diglycerides, which are naturally found in fruits and vegetables, to create a breathable extra layer that keeps moisture inside the produce while keeping oxygen out.   While these glycerides can be extracted from any fruit or vegetable, Apeel extracts them from widely grown plant oils that are passed through a purifying process to remove allergens, impurities and trans fats. Apeel claims that it only uses plant oils from non-GMO and sustainably grown sources.    So, what's the issue? Fatal conveniences are the toxic products we routinely use and the unhealthy things we do that our culture and corporations have made us believe are safe and necessary for living well and efficiently. These things—from deodorant, cosmetics, dental floss, and sunscreen to laundry detergent, air fresheners, carpets, and crayons to candles, tea bags, cell phones, and chewing gum—are ubiquitous in daily life . . . and they are wreaking havoc on our health and our planet. The environmental toxins found in these products create a cascade of problems, including chemical sensitivities, auto-immune issues, obesity, chronic health diseases, and more. When it comes to animal agriculture, most animals aren't living freely pasturing in wide-spaced green areas. Breeders and animal farms are more likely to be torturous prisons than the happy Uncle Bill farm that appears on the logo of your favorite hamburgers. And guess what? It comes at a cost to your health.   The animal industry is regulated differently by each country, but there's one thing in common: meat from sick animals can't be commercialized, but with the living conditions of the animals, they are inevitably going to get sick. So “naturally”, the animals in farms are medically treated to prevent or combat infectious diseases, most of which are treated with antibiotics.   You know the age-old saying: You are what you eat. So what happens to your health when the meat you are eating is pumped with antibiotics?    This is what we explore in this episode of Fatal Conveniences™.      What we discuss:   06:43: What are the dangers of antibiotic resistance? 08:07: How are these animals treated? 10:19: How is this a public health issue? 14:21: What can you do about it?     Reliable sources where you can learn more:    A Review of Antibiotic Use in Food Animals: Perspective, Policy, and Potential: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3234384/  Food Animals and Antimicrobials: Impacts on Human Health: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3194830/  Use of antimicrobials in food animals and impact of transmission of antimicrobial resistance on humans: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590053620301099  Comparison of different approaches to antibiotic restriction in food-producing animals: stratified results from a systematic review and meta-analysis: https://gh.bmj.com/content/4/4/e001710.abstract  Use of antibiotics in animal production and its impact on human health: https://foodchemistryjournal.com/jfcn/articles/v6n1/jfcn-082-naila-a-oliveira.pdf      Thank you to our sponsors:   Order my Fatal Conveniences book: https://darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book/   Shop Therasage and use code DARIN to save 15% on your purchase: https://therasage.com/pages/shop     Find more from Darin:   Website: https://darinolien.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Darinolien/ Book: https://darinolien.com/fatal-conveniences-book/ Down to Earth: https://darinolien.com/down-to-earth/

Nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter are just a few harmful pollutants found in gas stoves, and it doesn't stop there.   And what about induction stoves? What do you think is more dangerous: breathing in smog or flossing your teeth? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Darin Olien about the invisible fatal conveniences we use and do every day. The world we live in makes us believe we have to but in reality, these conveniences are harming us and the planet.  Darin stresses how important it is to take our health into our own hands, do our own research and due diligence, and make decisions for our health. One should never trust companies to do what's in our best interest. And the same goes for government agencies, like the FDA, that we think are there to protect us: they aren't.  Darin Olien is co-host of the Emmy™ Award Winning, #1 Netflix docu-series, Down to Earth with Zac Efron. He has spent nearly 20 years exploring the planet discovering new and underutilized exotic foods and medicinal plants as a Superfood hunter Darin developed, Shakeology. He is also the founder of Barukas™, the most nutrient-dense nut in the world coming from the Savannah “Cerrado” of Brazil. As host of the widely popular podcast The Darin Olien Show, Darin curiously explores people, solutions, and health as well as life's Fatal Conveniences™ – a segment of the show uncovering modern-day flaws and challenges that may be undermining our health and our environment.   What we discuss: 01:12: What motivated Darin to write his latest book? 09:32: How bad are EMFs for our health? 10:25: What do AirPods do to your health? 24:59: Does airplane mode make your phone safer to look around for you? 26:25: Are our gadgets causing cancer? 27:45: What's the solution to tracking your health? 30:53: Are the TSA scanners dangerous? 35:53: Is spandex safe? 39:22: Is cotton safer than polyester? 49:16: What is the most shocking fatal convenience? 54:35: How can we learn more about which products are dangerous? 59:10: How sensitive was Darin's dad to chemicals? 1:02:55: What are the symptoms that you are over-exposed to chemicals? 1:06:33: Is aging cream doing what it claims to do? 1:10:34: How can you turn a fatal convenience into a healthy convenience? 1:12:36: What are the benefits of Barukas nuts? 1:16:19: How is Shakeology different from other brands? 1:20:07: What is Darin's morning routine? Key takeaways: When it comes to your health, you cannot under any circumstance trust companies to do what's in your best interest. And the same goes for government agencies, like the FDA, that we think are there to protect us: they aren't. You need to take your health into your own hands, do your own research and due diligence, and make decisions for your health.  Most fatal conveniences that are in our food can easily be avoided with one simple solution: grow your food. Not only is the produce that you grow yourself best for you, but they eventually become more convenient to eat than to go to the supermarket and picking out supposedly “fresh” produce. Most of the pains, aches, and illnesses we are experiencing are symptoms of over-exposure to chemicals and pollutants. When you start feeling anything other than healthy, it's a sign that you need to change your lifestyle and be more careful of what it is you ingest, breathe in, and wear. The human endocrine system is comprised of an entire network of organs and glands that control a myriad of processes in the body. Your endocrine system creates and releases hormones that control everything from your metabolism to your sexual function. And while the body is designed to filter out exposure to chemicals, our modern society is constantly bombarding us with plastics and fragrances that can disrupt the way our endocrine system is designed to function. New York Times bestselling author Darin Olien has dedicated a large portion of his career to researching fatal conveniences—common products and ways of living that are slowly and cumulatively disrupting our hormones and diminishing our health. In his new book, Fatal Conveniences, Darin writes about how common household objects like dental floss, laundry detergent, and mattresses often contain environmental toxins that are wreaking havoc on our bodies. On today's show, he's sharing some of the common fatal conveniences that you might be regularly exposed to, including herbicides and pesticides, plastic, fragrance, EMFs, and much more. You're going to learn how to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals and how to become more empowered and conscious about your food, water, and household products. The vegan food label has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. It allows individuals who choose to adopt a vegan lifestyle to easily identify products that align with their dietary choices and values.    However, the vegan label can also be dangerous, as many people mistakenly believe that just because a food item is vegan, it must be healthy. This makes it confusing for a significant part of the  public to make right decisions about their food intakes.   It's time for us to start taking a second look at the vegan food labels to see the nasty ingredients hiding within that can be just as detrimental to our health as animal foods. If we want to use plant-based diets for the good of our health and the planet, we need to become educated beyond the labels we see on the front of food packages. The awareness of the harmful consequences of meat consumption on human health especially processed meats and conventionally grown meats as well as the toll on the environment grows every day, and so, the need for plant-based protein alternatives increases as well.    In recent years, we have seen a surge of various plant-based “meat” brands that sell the idea of replacing regular protein sources with vegan patties and tenders that are almost identical in looks and flavor to the animal version. Brands like Beyond Meat and Morningstar have increased popularity for proposing a way to enjoy old-fashioned animal flavors without actually harming any animal.    However, these kinds of foods remain with the harmful effects of highly processed products and are filled with harmful chemicals and dyes. That begs the question: Are fake meat alternatives healthier? Wet wipes have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their convenience and versatility. They are a typical example of a fast-paced and single-use product to which the negative consequences that generate are much more dangerous and significant when compared to its benefits. With the ever growing popularity of wet wipes has come a  significant environmental problem due to the impact on ecosystems, waterways, wildlife, and human health. In fact, 1 billion wipes are flushed away each year, and each one of those wipes can take over 100 years to biodegrade (according to Business Waste, a British company providing waste services). This leaves us with a gigantic waste problem that creates several environmental and health repercussions. When we flush a wet wipe down the toilet, we fail to think about the microplastics it contains, the blackages in sewage systems it causes, the harm it does to fish, birds, and other marine life that mistake them for food, the impact it has on our own health, and so much more. That's why in this episode, we are going to explore wet wipes as a fatal convenience…     Reliable Sources where you can learn more: Baby wipes and nappy rash – what is the relationship? With roughly 75% of the entire population being lactose intolerant and with the plant-based diet gaining major momentum throughout the entire world, many alternatives for animal-based products are beginning to be created. Although, there is one in particular that has been around for decades: Margarine…or what many of you know as I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.  Butter is one of the oldest discoveries in food, still present in today's society. It consists of fats, proteins, and vitamins from the milk of animals, predominantly the cow. In the late decades of the 20th century  we were seeing  fat speicifically saturated fat as the culprit to combat heart disease and high cholesterol and thus moved toward alternatives such as margarine with the infamous brand “I can't believe it's not butter” which claimed to have 70% less saturated fats (Source). But are highly processed alternatives like margarine really better for our health? In this episode, we are going to explore how this butter alternative can be causing just as many, if not more, health issues than standard butter. We're going to dive into the ingredients, the product process, the truth about margarine, and other plant-based alternatives that have shown to be healthier, more sustainable options for both you and the planet.
