In this episode, I reveal how a common misunderstanding about humility often holds people back from tapping into the confidence that they deserve to feel.

Tom Clark discusses Acts 7:60—“Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not charge them with this sin.' And when he had said this, he fell asleep.”
How does Jesus's life change the way you live your life?Centurions:Commanded 80-100 enlisted soldiersPromoted based on meritUpper ranks very well paidThe Centurion:Born a paganWorked his way to successLeft home to go to a foreign landBefriended foreign people who hated himGave his wealth to build a place of worship for those peopleIs the only one standing between a loved servant and deathWhere do you find this passage taking you so far?Hebrews 4:12: The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The word “amazed” that Jesus uses is only used in a positive way once in all of the four gospels.Excerpt from Jesus Storybook Bible ch. 1:“So God breathed life into Adam and Eve. When they opened their eyes, the first thing they ever saw was God's face. And when God saw them he was like a new dad. “You look like me,” he said.JesusLeft homeHad all the power, authority, and honor, but made himself nothingGave up heavenly riches to befriend a world that hated himIs the only one who stands between those he loves and certain deathIn what was the Centurion's faith?Romans 1:19-20 (MSG) But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can't see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being.Steps Toward True Humility:Where have you been blind to your own or others' need for Jesus because of your or their goodness? For recovering achievement-aholics: Meditate on Romans 2:4 - “The kindness of God is intended to lead you to repentance” - and ask yourself where God's goodness illuminates your pride
As we learn in Philippians 2:1-11, true humility sacrifices, serves, and suffers.
[audio mp3="https://www.crossbridgeofocean.org/wp-content/uploads/sermons/2025/04/2025_04_06-1.mp3"][/audio] Authentic teachers, leaders, and born-again believers must learn and practice humble servanthood, born out of a love for the Perfect King-Servant, Jesus Christ. You see a wash basin and a towel before you, similar to the ones that Jesus used to illustrate how even the Creator of the universe leads by serving others. Last week, we talked about authentic giving, prayer, and fasting. This morning, we will let Jesus teach us how real leaders serve others for the glory of God and the furtherance of the gospel. This is contrary to the standards that our culture has established. Let's learn from the Master, Jesus, about the principles of servant leadership.
Most leaders want a stellar group of followers to represent them and do their bidding. Some gather a group of intellectuals. Others surround themselves with people who are wealthy. Still others find followers with social influence. But who is it that Jesus chose as his apostles? To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/581/29

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less." C. S. Lewis may not have said those exact words (Mike misattributes the quote to him in this episode), but they certainly express what Lewis taught. In this third episode going through The Screwtape Letters, we explore what true humility is, how one goes about getting it, and how to receive a compliment. What does true humility really look like? Some may believe that a humble person must diminish themselves, becoming small or insignificant. But is that truly the essence of humility? Fr. Mike Schmitz offers a deeper perspective on what it means to be truly humble. He explains that humility actually requires both confidence and honesty. When we speak the truth and live authentically in that truth, we embody the heart of true humility.
