POPULARITY
In this episode, I reveal how a common misunderstanding about humility often holds people back from tapping into the confidence that they deserve to feel.
Tom Clark discusses Acts 7:60—“Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not charge them with this sin.' And when he had said this, he fell asleep.”
As we learn in Philippians 2:1-11, true humility sacrifices, serves, and suffers.
[audio mp3="https://www.crossbridgeofocean.org/wp-content/uploads/sermons/2025/04/2025_04_06-1.mp3"][/audio] Authentic teachers, leaders, and born-again believers must learn and practice humble servanthood, born out of a love for the Perfect King-Servant, Jesus Christ. You see a wash basin and a towel before you, similar to the ones that Jesus used to illustrate how even the Creator of the universe leads by serving others. Last week, we talked about authentic giving, prayer, and fasting. This morning, we will let Jesus teach us how real leaders serve others for the glory of God and the furtherance of the gospel. This is contrary to the standards that our culture has established. Let's learn from the Master, Jesus, about the principles of servant leadership.

March 17, 2025 Daily Devotion: “The Heart of True Humility” Luke 18:10-14 New Living Translation 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer[a]: ‘I thank you, God,that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I'm certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.'13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.' 14 I tell you, thissinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” In Luke 18:10-14, we encounter the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee prays with pride, recounting his own righteousness, while the tax collector humbly acknowledges his sinfulness, asking for mercy. Jesus concludes, "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted" (Luke 18:14, NIV). This parable starkly contrasts self-righteousness and genuine humility. The Pharisee represents those who rely on their works and status, believing they are justified beforeGod. In contrast, the tax collector embodies a heart of repentance, recognizing his need for grace. This teaches us that salvation is not earned through our deeds but is a gift from God to those who come before Him in humility. In our lives, it is crucial to examine our hearts. Are we approaching God with a sense of entitlement or with a humble spirit? The tax collector's prayer is a model for us, reminding us that true justification comes from recognizing our need for God's mercy. Let us pray for hearts that seek humility and depend on God's grace.

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less." C. S. Lewis may not have said those exact words (Mike misattributes the quote to him in this episode), but they certainly express what Lewis taught. In this third episode going through The Screwtape Letters, we explore what true humility is, how one goes about getting it, and how to receive a compliment. What does true humility really look like? Some may believe that a humble person must diminish themselves, becoming small or insignificant. But is that truly the essence of humility? Fr. Mike Schmitz offers a deeper perspective on what it means to be truly humble. He explains that humility actually requires both confidence and honesty. When we speak the truth and live authentically in that truth, we embody the heart of true humility.

Join Joe McDonald as he reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. In this session on Step 12 AA, Joe emphasizes the importance of approaching others with true humility and understanding the power of identity.“We sometimes are more comfortable talking about ourselves in disparaging terms because somehow we feel it's more humble. It's not because the person hearing us can only hear us describing them. So when I say things like I was a piece of crap and I was this and I was that, they're sitting there thinking, you mean like me? So I need people to know their identity when they approach—who you are and whose you are—so that when you start talking to them about how bad they feel about where they found themselves, they understand that at their best and at their worst, they're a child of the living God. And the fact is demonstrated by right where they are, in the pit of their disorder.”Joe's insights shed light on the significance of acknowledging our divine identity, even in our darkest moments, and how recognizing this can be a powerful tool in helping others recover.Join us as Joe McDonald reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. In this Bible Story, we learn about the man of God's disobedience towards the Lord. He's tricked into eating among the wicked city, and ultimately devoured by a lion. So he refused the king's offer to go back to the palace and have a meal. Hearing what signs the mysterious prophet had done, an old prophet in the city left to go find the man of God. When he found him, he lied to him and brought him back into the city to enjoy a meal. In this meditation we consider the importance of humility. Humility is offering ourselves to the Lord, walking in the truth. And Scripture tells us: "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." A meditation by Father Timothy Uhen.

True humility isn't about acknowledging what we lack, but acknowledging God's ability to do more. In “True Humility Is Key,” guest speaker Lisa Harper teaches us that when we humble ourselves, we leave room for God's mercy to fill in our gaps.
