Anna Samson has had a decade-long career in aid, was a US State Department-funded Fulbright Scholar, and has a PhD in international relations and American foreign policy. In this episode we discuss the inadvertent economic and political outcomes of foreign aid on receiving nations. What surprised me was Anna's view on the scale of the rent-seeking across the aid industry and the transformation of the aid project into one of strategic military and economic interests rather than one of humanitarianism.Apologies for the audio quality. Please read Anna's full article below about foreign aid, its failures, and its creeping national security objectives. As always, please like, share, comment, and subscribe. Theme music: Happy Swing by Serge Quadrado Music under Creative Commons Licence CC BY-NC 4.0The United States has had its fair share of Presidential foreign policy doctrines over the years. The Truman Doctrine underpinned America's Cold War containment policy to stop the spread of communism and Soviet influence. After the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, the Bush Doctrine brought us preventative military strikes and the ‘if you're not with us, you're against us' principle.Just over 50 days into his second term, the Trump Doctrine is shaping up to be ‘you can't make an omelette without blowing up the entire chicken coop'.Nowhere has this approach been more sharply felt than in the dismantling of USAID, a cornerstone of contemporary US foreign policy.Jettisoning USAID has achieved symbolic and practical purposes; it is both exactly what MAGA fans hoped for and what its critics feared: Trump embracing radical honesty in international relations by saying the quiet bits out loud and rupturing the mythology of the self-limiting guardrails on Executive power.Moments after his inauguration, President Trump, bolstered by Elon Musk's analysis of USAID as “not an apple with a worm in it [but] a ball of worms”, froze $60 billion in overseas development aid and then stood down 97% of its staff.Industry veterans highlighted the catastrophe the Executive Orders caused: polio vaccination programs halted, tonnes of food aid left rotting in warehouses in the midst of famines, and a stop on urgent humanitarian assistance delivered to hard-to-reach conflict zones. That's the problem with applying a Silicon Valley move-fast-and-break-things mindset to government policy: you can't just CTRL-Z your way out of any unintended consequences. The recent Supreme Court decision ordering the Trump Administration to immediately unfreeze US$2 billion in existing aid contracts only provides temporary reprieve for those relying on American development assistance. The ruling doesn't apply to billions in planned program funding or USAID jobs that have already been axed, both of which are the subject of separate legal challenges. To the President's detractors, gutting USAID is ideological and myopic. But it's also another example of Trump seeing which way the crowd is moving and running out in front.Indeed, rather than leaping to fill the void left by the US vacating the field, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a 40 per cent cut to his country's aid budget. France and the Netherlands are also cutting their aid expenditure by about a third. While Western aid workers are wringing their hands and UN buildings are lowering their thermostats as a cost-saving measure, the sector bears a great deal of responsibility for its own demise. With little evidence to show aid programs are delivering on their grand promises of economic prosperity and development, spending billions on aid is increasingly justified as a tool to advance donor countries' national security interests. This connection is not new: the modern aid system was built by imperial powers to help maintain influence even as their former colonial territories were achieving political independence. It should come as no surprise that many aid recipients are not exactly mourning USAID's downfall. They point to numerous instances where USAID used humanitarianism as a front for meddling in other nations' domestic politics. For all the talk of ‘empowerment' and ‘local partnerships', government-funded foreign aid is rooted in and continues to reproduce historical structures of resource extraction, dependence, market distortion and racism.Explicitly blurring the lines between humanitarianism and self-interest lays bare the iron fist of neocolonialism within the velvet glove of benevolence. From the perspective of donor countries, all this real-talk about interests over altruism requires the aid industry to demonstrate bang for taxpayer buck. It's no accident that among the first casualties in DOGE's USAID cuts were expat bureaucrats enjoying all the cushy accoutrements that a career in the aid industry guaranteed.Government donor agencies - including Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) — frequently administer aid money inefficiently and ineffectively; 40 per cent of Australian aid investments were rated as 'unsatisfactory' upon completion. If the aim of aid is to bolster our own security, not only should this causal link be established more directly, DFAT should explain why Australia funds aid over other defence spending with a clearer line of sight to maintaining the nation's middle power status.Current approaches to aid program evaluations, including in DFAT's most recent Performance of Australian Development Cooperation Report 2023-24, do not provide that level of accountability. Taxpayers are expected to accept measures like “capacity building” and numbers of individuals “supported” or “reached” in pursuit of development goals.USAID's abolition, while confronting in its audacity, should not be met simply with self-righteous indignation about the supposed nobility of aid work or showing how aid can be weaponised to undercut the West's rivals.Instead, it should be seen as an opportunity to rethink the whole foreign aid system. It's a chance to create a world where countries drive their own development and self-interested ‘generosity' and donor dependence are no longer required.Decoupling foreign aid from national security will allow this money to do what it does best: humanitarian action based on foundational principles of humanity, impartiality, independence and neutrality. The Rocky Road hits its 200th episode during Paddy's week – so who better to have on than the King of New York himself, Ireland's John Duddy. He had a famous fan in Jake LaMotta and later worked closely with Robert DeNiro, who had starred as The Bronx Bull in Martin Scorsese's epic Raging Bull back in 1980. Even today he's boxing royalty in the Big Apple but John Duddy is also a son of Derry and an Irish boxing cult hero, someone who helped popularise professional boxing in the early noughties, leading to a wave of up and coming fighters to follow their dreams either at home or across the pond. Show that you can become a big name in Dublin and you could be labelled ‘the next Bernard Dunne'. Show that you're ready to break the Big Apple and you might, you just might, be labelled ‘the next John Duddy'. The Derry Destroyer fought nine times at Madison Square Garden between 2005 and 2010 – winning them all – and lost just twice in a 31-fight career. At one stage he was right in the mix to fight for the middleweight championship of the world – which LaMotta held between 1949 and 1951 – but boxing had other plans for him. John wrapped up his career in 2011 when he realised his hunger had dimmed, cancelling an all-Irish match-up with Andy Lee, and, bitten by the acting bug, he's never looked back. He's still involved in the sport to this day, spearheading a new programme with the Moving Brains Foundation which put on 54 two-hour sessions for people with Parkinsons Disease in 2024 – and continues to grow and grow. And he is also coaching at Trinity Boxing in New York City, a stone's throw from the World Trade Centre, with the hope of one day opening his own gym. In Part 1, we look back at John's early years in the Irish amateur ranks, his determination to unseat Michael Roche as light-middleweight champ and the Corkman's incredible gesture before he finally did, his boxing pals who made it all so enjoyable, and hunkering down to avoid a hurricane in Cuba during a training camp. We also discuss the links in the chain that go from his early life until now – his uncle Jackie, his dad Michael, Charlie Nash, Ken Buchanan, Barry McGuigan and Roberto Duran. This is the ultimate Rocky story. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
How do you follow a film like Longlegs, the chilling riff on serial killer thrillers that became one of the cult smashes of 2024? The answer, if you're acclaimed writer-director Osgood Perkins, is to first swap out the pressure-cooker dread of that breakout hit. Next, add a cursed toy monkey. Then, harvest the wildest, darkest parts of your imagination for some of the most gruesome demises ever seen on screen. And finally, package all of the above into an existentialist comedy about embracing death. The result is The Monkey – a Stephen King adaptation inspired by the literary icon's 1980 short story of the same name, but very much a work of Oz's own invention. From the moment a flamethrower-wielding Adam Scott opens the film with a maniacal cameo, screaming as he scorches everything in his path, it's clear the movie is operating on a different tonal plane to Longlegs. But make no mistake, The Monkey is just as personal to Oz as that film and others before it, like The Blackcoat's Daughter and 2016's I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. Perhaps, in fact, even more so. As Oz explains in this moving spoiler conversation, the film is a meditation on death because death is something he's experienced up close in the most unimaginably tragic circumstances; on September 12 1992, his father, Psycho actor Anthony Perkins, died of AIDS-related pneumonia at his home in Los Angeles. Almost exactly nine years later, his mother, the actress and photographer Berry Berenson, was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 when it was hijacked by terrorists and flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre, on September 11, 2001. The Monkey, he says, features Theo James playing two roles as twin brothers Hal and Bill, because “that's my life,” as he puts it. He and his own brother Elvis Perkins, an acclaimed musician, became “buried in the rubble of the tragedy” of their mother's death on 9/11 and emerged with “differences more apparent than ever.” In the conversation you're about to hear, Oz tells us the extent to which the movie helped reconcile some of the feelings towards his brother. Al asks him about the ending of the film, which involves a plane crash – a very emotionally-loaded image, given his tragic family history. And he shares why accepting death is the only true way to find peace.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. This podcast episode delves into the inspiring story behind the Daffodil Project, a community-driven initiative that has resulted in the planting of over 12 million daffodil bulbs across New York City since its inception in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy.Sally Flatman speaks with Constance Casey who was working for the New York Parks Department when the gift of one million daffodil bulbs , was given to the city by Hans van Waardenburg and the city of Rotterdam following on from the attack on the World Trade Centre. That Autumn as the community took on the task of planting the bulbs, they were creating "a ribbon of yellow around the island of Manhattan" that would bloom the following Spring.Adam Ganser, the Executive Director of New Yorkers for Parks, joins the conversation to discuss the ongoing efforts to maintain and expand this initiative, emphasising the importance of community involvement and equitable access to parks. The episode highlights not only the significance of the daffodil project as a living memorial but also the broader impact of green spaces on public health and community wellbeing. Of course we also learn how to grow the plant ourselves though as Adam assures us: "its hard to screw it up"!Our Plant Stories is back and once again we will be sharing stories about plants. Following a victory at the Nenggiri by-election and a “return to form” reminiscent of its pre-pandemic influence, the UMNO general assembly at the World Trade Centre has shown renewed vitality that had been absent in recent years. However, this revival also brings back the familiar grandstanding and political posturing, with UMNO continuing to appeal to its conservative Malay base. At the same time, the party's “reformist” elements persist, signaling ongoing efforts to adapt in the face of a shifting political landscape. Join Haffisz and Adi on Kopitiam Council as they delve into key moments from the UMNO general assembly, examining whether the party is still relevant in today's political environment and assessing its prospects on capitalizing its victory in Nenggiri and perhaps begin a recovery after its less than stellar performance over the years. Part One James Corbett James is celebrating his 17th anniversary hosting the highly respected "The Corbett Report". All of James's research is FREE on his website! Jimmy Dore recently featured James’s viral video ‘9/11 in Five Minutes’. James pokes holes throughout the official 9/11 story, highlighting government fraud with humour. How could Americans allow 9/11 plotters go unpunished? How could they let it slide? If you investigate any of the government's promoted facts, you will discover their fraud. Are we finally coming out of the shadow of the hysteria 9/11 caused? Countless victims in Afghanistan, Iraq & Syria, not just the lives taken on 9/11. The official government story of 9/11 was crafted based on testimony extracted through torture. History shows us torture only extracts the information that the torturer wants to hear, not the truth. Under torture, 'terrorist' confessed to plotting to blow up buildings that didn’t exist at time of arrest. The 'official' 9/11 story is as believable as lies about Saddam Hussein & weapons of mass destruction. Fictional 'The Lone Pilot' pilot aired on TV months before 9/11, eerily the same terrorist plot. Military Industrial Complex financial interests threatened by end of the Cold War, peace & budget cuts. James encourages you to watch his 9/11 War Games documentary to understand military involvement. Over 2 dozen disorganized aviation exercises in varied states of progress hindered response on 9/11. Vigilant Guardian, a massive NORAD exercise, injected fake radar blips on NORAD screens. There was repeated confusion all morning long, not knowing if the radar blips were real threats or not. Phantom 11 having hit the World Trade Centre but still identified by NORAD as flying West. Imagine this feat being pulled off by a man on dialysis, in a cave, halfway across the world? How did Osama Bin Laden know to strike on a day of massive confusion on the Eastern seaboard? Why did Bush & Cheney have to testify together while requesting their testimony be 'off the record'? Only notes were allowed, then classified from public viewing for 20+ years, before being doctored. The 9/11 attacks were designed by terrorists to be very spectacular, garnering people’s attention. From the 5 Dancing Israelis, to the emergency call about Palestinians in a van, to Michael Chertoff and the Patriot Act he co-authored, to 'pull it' Larry Silverstein. There is also Benjamin Netanyahu, who said "we are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack." In other words, 911 was used in concert with the satellite state of Israel to fight the PNAC wars and demonize the Muslim world. Or maybe this is an anti-semitic conspiracy theory? At least, that's what the ADL says. Good thing Mohammed Atta left an Arabic flight manual and Koran in his car, and his passport was found in the rubble of the WTC complex.-FREE ARCHIVE & RSS: https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-secret-teachingsTwitter: https://twitter.com/TST___RadioFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretteachingsWEBSITE (BOOKS, RESUBSCRIBE for early show access): http://thesecretteachings.infoPaypal: rdgable@yahoo.comCashApp: $rdgableBuy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/tstradioSUBSCRIBE TO NETWORK: http://aftermath.mediaEMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.com

In the second part of their discussion based on the book Coming to Faith Through Dawkins, theologian Alister McGrath and YouTuber Alex O'Connor discuss where we may be heading in regards to religion and atheism. Faith or Atheism: what's next? Recorded on 9/11, 22 years after the tragic events at New York's World Trade Centre, which in many ways provided a catalyst for the New Atheist movement, they discuss why New Atheism has lost its appeal, what some of the new concerns and questions are and whether anything will replace it. Alister shares the evidence that compelled him to move from atheism to Christianity and Alex contemplates what it might take to convince him that God exists. Today Jeff Keene joins us again to discuss KM Wehrstein's theory of the eternal warrior. In researching military past lives, KM discovered the interesting phenomenon of people repeating multiple military past lives, almost as if they were driven to lives of service and battle as a calling. Jeff Keene is the quintessential eternal warrior, with his memories of being a samurai, Arthur De Richmond,General Israel Putnam in the Revolutionary War, John B Gordon and even in his current life, he served in the military for a short period of time before leaving the army and pursuing a career as a fire fighter. We also discuss his encounter with the mother of a small boy who remembered also being a firefighter who died in the 911 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre. Join us now to learn more about this interesting subject.
In February 1993 a thunderous explosion rocked the parking garage below the World Trade Centre carving out a crater in the floor that was 100 feet wide and several stories deep. Initially it was believed that a transformer may have exploded because the idea of terrorism on United States soil seemed impossible. On this episode of History of the 90s, host Kathy Kenzora looks back at an event that marked the beginning of a new era of terrorism and foreshadowed much worse things to come. On today's Zero Limits Podcast we chat to Joe Torrillo a 25 year Lieutenant with the NYC Fire Department. A survivor of the 9/11 attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, Joe survived a series of coordinated terrorist attacks on one of New York's most prominent landmarks, which resulted in almost 3000 fatalities and over 25,000 people injured. He set up a press conference to introduce his new “Billy Blazes” action figure for Fisher-Price Toys, as part of their Rescue Heroes collection. Ironically, the introduction was scheduled for September 11, 2001, in Manhattan.Joe Torrillo recounts his first-hand experience as a firefighter on September 11, 2001. Joe was directly below the North Tower looking up as the second commercial airliner slammed into it. What transpired in the next few seconds, minutes, hours, and days are nothing shy of unbelievable. He was propelled in the air by the concussion of the falling debris of the North Tower and was literally buried alive under the falling debris, with his skull open, arm snapped and suffocating in darkness. He was rescued and placed in a boat to cross over the Hudson River for medical treatment. That effort was disrupted by falling building debris that covered the boat, where he was buried alive again.Joe continues to speak about the devastating occurrences of 9/11/2001 to ensure that the sacrifices made by the heroic servicemen and women are not forgotten. In his speeches, Joe is known to speak about resurrecting patriotism, never giving up on dreams, embracing change and celebrating members of the Armed Services. Let's GO!

This week on Wellbeing, we speak with Mitchell Stern, a paramedic who received PTSD as a result of 9/11. Mitchell joined the EMS in 1974 and went on to have decorated career in the paramedic field. Prior to 9/11 Mitchell was involved in responding to the 1990 Happy Land Fire and many other well-known New York accidents. It was for his efforts in his work that Mitchell got to meet the likes of Ronald Reagan, Nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter. When the the World Trade Centre collapsed on September the 11th 2001, Mitchell was assisting in an ambulance which was partially crushed by the wreckage. They were stuck inside the crushed vehicle for several minutes before being rescued. PTSD has been with Mitchell ever since that day and in this episode he explains how he lives with it. In this episode, Mitchell talks about some of the confronting experiences he had in his career prior to 9/11, his experiences on September the 11th, how PTSD become a part of his life after 9/11, how he manages his PTSD, the support available for first responders with PTSD, and how he came to terms with his PTSD. "9/11 was just so overwhelming, it got to your core of your ability to live" - Mitchell Stern on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in next week where we speak with a mother who has a daughter with PTSD. This week on Wellbeing we talk with William Jimeno and Dr Michael Moats. Will is a 9/11 survivor who survived 13 hours trapped under the rubble of the Word Trade Centre and Michael is a psychologist. The pair have authored a book called “Sunrise Through the Darkness” based around Will's PTSD recovery and Michael's clinical expertise. On September the 11th 2001, Will was living the American dream. He had his dream job as a police officer and a beautiful family. He and twenty other brothers in blue rode via commandeered bus to the World Trade Centre after it had been hit by both planes. Will was in the South Tower when all 110 floors collapsed on him. He and his Sargent, John McLoughlin, were trapped for 13 hours. This part of Will's journey was depicted in the 2006 Oliver Stone movie “World Trade Centre” starring Nicolas Cage. However, Will's journey was far from over as he would now be living with PTSD. This is where ‘Sunrise Through the Darkness” picks up in Will's story. Will still has PTSD to this day but manages it so that he can live a great life to honour those who were lost in the attacks. In this episode, Will talks about his 9/11 experiences, how they effected him in the form of PTSD after his survival, how his PTSD affected his emotions and behaviour, and the journey in him being able to manage his PTSD. Dr Moats gives his clinical perspective into PTSD adding to Will's answers during the interview. "PTSD comes in so many forms, it can be anger, depression, alcohol, drug abuse and there's many many stories out there that inspire you every single day, that show you, you can overcome Post Traumatic Stress Disorder." - Will Jimeno on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in next week when we speak with a paramedic who received PTSD as a result of 9/11. To kick off this new series I'm joined by Ginny Buckingham – the quietly spoken, devoted mum-of-two who for a period of her life faced the frankly unfathomable trauma of being publicly blamed for thousands of deaths.Ginny was the boss of Boston's Logan Airport where, on the morning of September 11th 2001, a group of terrorists boarded American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, airliners that of course very soon after take-off, they would hijack and later fly into New York's World Trade Centre.Ginny led a daunting, frankly unprecedented crisis management operation at Logan but within 48hours of the attacks, the blame game began. It was wrongly claimed that the terrorists had targeted Logan because of its weak security systems and links to Boston politics. There were angry demands for Ginny to resign and, as one newspaper put it – ‘atone' for the massacre. Her political bosses – as so often happens in crisis – saw the opportunity for a scapegoat. Blame, as Ginny puts it, gave them the opportunity to get control of an uncontrollable situation.Six weeks after the attacks, she was forced to resign but faced years of continued accusations and a personal legal claim from the wife of a 9/11 victim. As the second anniversary of the atrocity approached, Ginny sat alone in her car and considered suicide. This is a conversation about blame, the psychological impact of public scandal, guilt and recovery. Of how when crisis, politics and media collide, those in the crosshairs can find themselves in the most brutal of positions. In her book On My Watch (and indeed during this pod), Ginny stresses time and again that her difficulties are nothing as compared to those who lost their lives on 9/11 and the families they left behind. But hers is a story of how public crisis can so often create powerful tides of misplaced retribution and blame that wreak havoc on those unfortunate enough to be in the way. That even after she was very publicly exonerated by the 9/11 commission, the psychological damage, continued, demonstrating I think, that crisis can have a very long, unseen but very damaging tail.Ginny hopes that by telling her story, our leaders might think twice before reaching for the scapegoat button when trouble comes – and I hope she's right. Huge thanks to her for joining us and I hope you find this podcast useful.Full transcript and links available at: https://www.crisiswhatcrisis.com/podcasts/virginia-buckingham-on-9-11-the-unbearable-burden-of-blame-and-moving-forward/ Ginny's Crisis Cures:1 – Make a room in your home a haven for you during crisis and while you're healing. I have a sitting room in the corner of my house that has my candles and my artwork and my books – that's where I curl up in the corner, take a breath and say, “Okay. Go at this again tomorrow.”2 – Find a purpose outside of yourself and your current situation to devote yourself to. In my case I was very lucky that I had two little children to take care of and devote myself to outside of what was happening. But whether it's parenting or taking care of your dog or your neighbour – it gives purpose and meaning to your day to day.3 – Do good with something bad. In my case, I took my story and I put it in a book and I put it out in the world. So don't just let the bad things sit. Take advantage of the crisis and do good with it.Ginny's Crisis Track: Bruce Springsteen ‘The Rising'

My next guest, Kenneth Feinberg, literally stopped me in my tracks. Ken is a prominent attorney, a world-renowned MEDIATOR and the one time chief of staff of the late U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy. But when we all stood still on 9/11 after one of the most horrific terrorist attacks the world has ever seen, Ken stood up and wanted – indeed asked - to be counted.Ken was appointed as the Special Master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund just a few weeks after the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. In this role, Ken met with nearly every family who was a victim of 9/11 at the absolute height of their grief. He listened. He empathised. He held space for their sorrow. He travelled the length and breadth of the country to make it easier for families to meet with him. He enlisted the support of others, including clergy, when victims' families were simply too broken to apply for their share of the Fund. He even offered to fill in the forms on behalf of the victims. Whilst Ken could never return a father to a grieving child, or a son to an inconsolable mother, or a husband to a pregnant wife, what he could do was ensure that some of victims' dreams would continue in their absence and that financial hardship would not be another challenge for these all, but shattered, families. Ken presided over this unprecedented Fund that ultimately awarded over $7.1 billion DOLLARS of public taxpayer money to the families of 2,983 killed and approximately 2,400 physically injured and maimed, in the most devastating of ways on 9/11.The administration of this Fund took 33 months. Ken Feinberg was never paid a cent for his efforts, insisting he take on the role on a pro bono basis. His epic story, now memorialised in his memoir – WHAT IS LIFE WORTH – has inspired the extraordinary Netflix film WORTH starring Michael Keaton and Stanley Tucci. On a more personal note, from the first instance I had the pleasure of coming across Ken, I have been overwhelmed by his warmth, generosity and his impeccable character. His Solomonic efforts in fighting for fair for every single claimant is just incredible. So it is with immense humility and gratitude that I welcome Kenneth R Feinberg to the BRAVE JOURNEYS family. This is Ken's story…. The devastating terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in 1993 and 2001 were traumatic for thousands of people. They also changed many people's lives. Some left New York City, never to return. Some left the corporate world. Today's guest, Miriam Schulman, was one such woman. She tells Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle that she was always a closet artist, but was afraid of not being able to make a living if she chose that path. Instead, she worked with a successful hedge fund. However, when the terrorism came to US soil, Miriam—along with many others—had a wake up call. In 2001 she crossed a threshold of no return. Learning How To Make Money From Creativity Miriam took a job teaching Pilates at a gym and was also responsible for selling fitness packages. This was the perfect opportunity to study their sales model and emulate it with her own business. She soon set up as an artist launching The Inspiration Place, and began selling classes. They included teaching people how to paint, including portraits. She also took commissions. This transition wasn't easy. Miriam is a mother and had to find creative ways of balancing her business with raising children. But today, she has a highly successful business with classes, clients, and her own podcast, The Inspiration Place. If People Keep Asking You Questions, Write a Book! Like many other successful entrepreneurs, Miriam had lots of people asking questions about how she ran her classes and other aspects of her business, and over time, the idea for her book arose. She realized that by writing a book she would be able to connect directly with people just like her: moms (and dads) who are raising children but want to create a successful business that feels rewarding and helps others, too. Her forthcoming book will be published by Harper Collins in 2022. Bad Book Reviews On Amazon Can Help You Create a Great Book One of the major things an author must accomplish is producing a book with a unique message. This doesn't mean that the whole book's idea must be unique or that you can't attribute content to other writers or quote people. But the core focus or ‘Why' behind your book should be unique. Creatives Jeff Goins and Lisa Congdon have both written books on running successful creative ventures. But, points out Miriam, neither one of them is a mother of children. “And that's a huge part of my audience . . . women who have children, who are being given the message that you can't be an artist and a mother. “So I felt that that was a big distinguisher between my message and the message of other authors. It's just a different positioning. There were also other books where the mindset and the why was there, but they didn't really then go into the how to.” Amazon proved to be a big help here. Specifically, it was reading poor reviews of similar books that told Miriam what her book should and shouldn't contain. “I spent a lot of time looking at the negative Amazon reviews because that really gave me clues into what I was going to say to be different, which didn't mean I was going to bash the other authors because . . . that would be a huge turnoff,” explains Miriam. “But it really helped me create the language and describe . . . how to do it.” When You Tell Yourself It's Not Working, Stop Listening Like most creative folks, Miriam knows only too well the temptations of negative self-talk. She's currently in the process of writing her book and knows it can be too easy to believe that voice in your head that says your creative project won't work or your efforts are doomed to fail. She has a special message for Published Author listeners: “We're always going to have that fear of something going wrong and not making it. Our brains have evolved to be wary of fear. Our brains want to keep us safe. Our brains are going to come up with all kinds of reasons why something isn't going to work. I don't call these excuses. I call them doubts.” She also cautions that the smarter you are, the more doubts you'll throw in your own path. “They feel real to you. So be careful of the stories you're telling yourself,” Miriam cautions. “Those stories that you're making up in your mind, why it's not a good time to start, why you're not ready yet, why something won't work for you.” It definitely is your time, she says, “And you're going to do it anyway. And you're ready for this step.” In this episode Miriam also talks about how to find the right agent for your book and her writing schedule.
