Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”A former Anglican Priest says, “I lost the argument,” and somehow that turns into a battle for truth, conscience, and coming home. Kevin Middlesworth joins us to share the winding road from a devoted evangelical childhood, through Calvinist and Reformed theology, into Anglican priesthood, and finally into full communion with the Catholic Church. We talk about the moment when so many Christians hit a wall: the authority question. Who gets to say what Scripture means, what the Eucharist really is, and what the moral life demands? Kevin describes the hidden exhaustion of being your own final judge, the “crushing weight” of trying to carry every doctrine alone. From there, we follow the breadcrumbs that led him to the Church Fathers, the Catechism, and St. John Henry Newman's insight on conscience as God's persistent voice. This is not just an intellectual conversion story. Kevin opens up about marriage, friendship, and the real cost of changing course, plus why he refused to pressure his wife while she wrestled with the same Catholic claims. Eucharistic adoration, Confession, the Rosary, the Liturgy of the Hours, and the surprising discovery that what once looked like “extra's” is actually God's abundance. If you're curious about Catholicism, returning to the faith, or trying to find solid ground in a noisy culture, come listen. “Scripture will correct the councils.” It sounds simple, even reassuring. But once you slow down and ask how that correction actually happens, the clarity starts to unravel. This episode follows that question all the way down. The Bible does not speak out loud—it must be read. And reading always means interpretation. So when two sincere Christians, both appealing to Scripture, arrive at different conclusions… who decides what is true? What actually settles doctrine, worship, and practice? We move beyond slogans and into the real mechanics of biblical authority. What does it mean to “submit everything to the Word” if there is no agreed way to identify the right interpretation? Why do disagreements persist even among people who are equally committed to Scripture? And what happens when the principle meant to unify ends up multiplying divisions?Along the way, we explore the deeper philosophical and historical layers beneath the debate. We look at the burden of proof required to overturn long-standing Christian practice, and why Chesterton's fence reminds us that tearing down inherited structures without understanding their purpose can leave us with less clarity, not more. We also examine the authorities Protestants often rely on in practice—confessions like the Westminster Confession of Faith, trusted pastors, and study Bible notes—and ask whether these function as a kind of tradition, even when they are not named as such. From there, we widen the lens. Why has sola scriptura, in practice, coincided with endless denominational fragmentation? And how does that compare with the Orthodox Christian claim that the faith has been preserved, lived, and handed down continuously from the apostles within the life of the Church? This isn't a surface-level debate. It's a direct confrontation with the question that sits underneath all theology and all disagreement:Who gets to decide? If you've wrestled with Scripture, authority, church history, or the tension between personal interpretation and historic Christianity, this conversation will challenge you to think more carefully—and more honestly—about where Christian authority ultimately rests.Subscribe for more thoughtful conversations, share this episode with someone who loves theology, and join the discussion: where do you believe the final authority in Christianity should be found?Questions about Orthodoxy? A group of Christian leaders who have chained themselves to Nicola Willis' Johnsonville electorate office are vowing to stay there overnight. They want an urgent timeline from the Government for implementing sanctions against Israel over the war in Gaza. Reverend Mel McKenzie says they're fasting in solidarity with the people of Palestine. "We're just so focused on the suffering that's happening in Gaza and we're doing what Anglican and Catholic priests do - which is to pray and fast." Nicola Willis says she supports the right to peaceful protest - but adds their presence is blocking the public's access to her office and its staff members who would otherwise be able to provide help to the community. Five clergy were trespassed from Simeon Brown's Pakuranga electorate office earlier today. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Michael Coren has lived many lives. Born to a Jewish cab driver in England, Coren converted to Catholocism in the 1980s, then Evangelicalism in the '90s; he grew into a bombastic right-wing Christian talk radio and TV personality with shows on the Sun News Network and the Crossroads Television System; then he came back to embrace the Catholic Church, before finally leaving again to become not just an Anglican—but an Anglican priest. Coren's spiritual malleability—including open repentance for insulting comments he made about queer people decades ago, and the journey he's taken to fundamentally change various political opinions—is at the heart of his new memoir, Heaping Coals: From Media Firebrand to Anglican Priest, published in October 2024. In it, he recounts how he never considered how hard it was for his parents when he left his home country for Canada, and how his perspective on Christian values has changed, while the role of Christiandom has shifted in the broader Western world. Coren sits down with fellow former broadcaster Ralph Benmergui for a frank talk about his numerous mea culpas, handling backlash on social media and the profound difficulty in forgiveness. On Culture is the podcast of The Embassy - this episode is based on this latest piece from The Embassy. TakeTish Harrison Warren is an Anglican Priest who has written a weekly Op-Ed column for the New York Times over the past few years. She is leaving that post and shared, in her last column, some of the reasons why. I'll quote her at some length, and I recommend the whole piece. I think there is something here for manFor this and many other reasons, it was a tough decision to leave. And as with any tough decision, my reasons are varied and complex, but one is that writing publicly about God each week can do a number on one's soul. Thomas Wingfold, a character in a novel by the Scottish minister and poet George MacDonald, said, “Nothing is so deadening to the divine as an habitual dealing with the outsides of holy things.” Holy things, sacred topics, spiritual ideas, I believe, have power. Dealing with them is a privilege and a joy, but habitually dealing with the outside of them is inherently dangerous. The “outsides” of holy things, to me, describes the difference between speaking about divine or sacred things and encountering the divine or the sacred directly. To be sure, we need more and better religious discourse in America. In my very first newsletter for The Times, I wrote that “we need to start talking about God,” and I still believe that. I believe that religion and, more broadly, the biggest questions in life are the driving forces behind much that is beautiful, divisive, unifying, controversial and perplexing about our culture and society.Yet there is danger in becoming a pundit, particularly on matters of faith and spirituality. It can be deadening. I plan to continue to write about faith, to explore its impact on politics, study it sociologically, think about its metaphors and claims of truth. But for any person of faith, public engagement must be balanced with times of withdrawal, of silence, prayer, questioning and wonder beyond the reach of words. Otherwise, faith with all its strange and startling topology becomes a flat and sterile thing, something to be dissected, instead of embraced. And typically once something is fit only for dissection, it is dead. I bring this up because it is a temptation for all of us now. Social media and digital technology have made us all pundits. We are faced with a constant choice: Every experience, belief, feeling and thought we have can be shared publicly or not. In a single day, we can take in more information and ideas than was ever possible, yet at the end of the day we can still lack wisdom.Constant connectivity empties us out, as individuals and as a society, making us shallower thinkers and more impatient with others. When it comes to faith, it can yield a habitual dealing with the outsides of holy things, fostering an avoidance of those internal parts of life that are most difficult, things like prayer, uncertainty, humility and the nakedness of who we most truly are amid this confusing, heartbreaking and incandescently beautiful world.Tish Harrison Warren - My Hope for American Discourse - New York TimesLinksLots of Americans are Losing Their Religion: Are You? - Jessica Grose - NYTChristianity's Got a Branding Problem -  Jessica Grose - NYTWhy Do People Lose Their Religion? - Jessica Grose - NYTThe Largest and Fastest Religious Shift in America is Well Underway - Jessica Grose - NYTWhat Churches Offer that Nones Still Long For - Jessica Grose - NYTMy Hope for American Discourse - Tish Harrison Warren - NYT Get full access to The Embassy at theembassy.substack.com/subscribe

In this episode,  I'm joined by Leeanne Thomas to talk about her amazing and seemingly unlikely journey into the Catholic Church. Raised in a small Mennonite town in Northern Canada Leeanne journeyed through Charismatic Christianity, into a deep love for theology and the liturgy, and finally onto a pathway to ordination into the Anglican priesthood before deciding that she ultimately had to become Catholic. Leeanne's journey is fascinating as she discovers her love for liturgical living while working on a degree at a charismatic Bible college, her calling to the priesthood, and her ultimate struggle with teaching authoritatively from a theological landscape, in Anglicanism, that seemed to accept all points of view. Plus, her discovery of the Early Church, her realization of the importance of the Pope, and her conversations with her husband, Dr. Matthew Thomas, a guest of this show, all figure into her amazing story. "I put my pants and toothbrush in a bag, and I never went back." On a wet and windy November night a Carmelite nun, Lisa, leaves the convent, her home for 24 years, after a monk asks her to marry him. With so few people now living in religious communities, what's the future for Britain's monks, nuns, friars and sisters? Aleem Maqbool brings together three people who have experienced life in a religious order to hear Lisa's story and discuss this question. Father Luigi Gioia is a former Benedictine monk, turned Anglican Priest and scholar. Sister Gabriel Davison is a nun with the Poor Clares in Arundel, West Sussex, a centuries-old Catholic order which had a recent surprise hit in the classical charts with an album of their singing. And Berwyn Watson is the new Abbott at the Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey in Northumberland. The panel discuss what first attracted them to religious life and the benefits and challenges to life as a monk or nun. What is the purpose of monastic life, both for individuals, but also for the wider religious community and society? And what's the place of these centuries-old institutions in modern Britain? In many mainline church contexts, pastors and leaders often spend countless hours wishing things were different and worrying about what's next. Anglican Priest, author, and runner Martha Tatarnic proposes a different way, encouraging pastors and leaders to embrace "ultrarealism," a running philosophy that encourages one to focus on what's actually happening and embrace it. In our conversation, we talk about why ultrarealism isn't about giving up,  why an ultrareal church can't be anything other than an anti-Designer community, and what the big risk is in an ultrareal church. Martha Tatarnic is the lead priest of St. George's, a thriving downtown Anglican church in St. Catharines Ontario. Martha writes a regular blog for the Anglican Church of Canada, which can be found at medium.com. Shownotes:When it comes to racial reconciliation, the church is quick to educate its congregants about the power of forgiveness. Pastors often jump to the solution without acknowledging the full extent of the problem. What do we do when we're enraged by the things we've seen or experienced? How do we make a conscious, faithful choice to practice Christianity even when it seems harder than we can bear?In his new book, Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope, Dr. Esau McCaulley aims not to answer questions the church is asking, but to answer questions that Black Christians are asking. A New Testament scholar, Anglican Priest, and theologian, McCaulley understands that the way we interpret the Bible often depends on our communities and context. He invites listeners to take an unfiltered look into the Black experience and to ponder how all of us can interpret the Bible as an exercise in hope.He joins Eddie and Chris to discuss how Christians can have open dialogue about riots and protests, and how white Christians can interpret the truth behind the phrase “Black Lives Matter.” They talk about specific passages in the Bible that point to the grief and rage Black Americans feel and where the cross of Christ fits into the scope of human emotion.Resources:You can order Esau's book “Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope” hereLearn more about Esau's podcast “The Disrupters” here: https://esaumccaulley.com/the-disrupters-podcast/  Read Esau's articles in The New York Times here: https://www.nytimes.com/by/esau-mccaulley Follow Esau on the web: https://esaumccaulley.com Follow Esau on social media:https://www.facebook.com/OfficialEsauMcCaulley https://www.instagram.com/esaumccaulley/ https://twitter.com/esaumccaulley

In the penultimate episode of our Christian Anti-Judaism series, we turn to discuss Christian theology in the wake of the Holocaust and the Shoah with Rev. Dr. Mark Lindsay, who is Joan F. W. Munro Professor of Historical Theology at Trinity College, Melbourne, and an Anglican Priest in the diocese of Melbourne. In our conversation, Rev. Dr. Lindsay begins with the determination at the Second Vatican Council in 1965 that neither biblical nor post-biblical Jews ought not to be collectively charged with deicide. He uses that moment to look back over two millennia of church history to see the anti-Jewish and anti-Semitic rhetoric and theology, including various forms of supersessionism, that developed with precisely the opposite view. As for a way forward for Christian theology, Rev. Dr. Lindsay highlights the need for constructive work to be conducted in the light of the “open wound” of the Holocaust, pointing to such work as Karl Barth's Christology and theology of election as some important examples. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities includes: Dr. Josh Carroll, Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Rev. Daniel Parham, and Dr. Chris Porter.
