Witnesses describe the scene of a shooting at Mayfair Mall to WTMJ.
Updated Monday 6:18 p.m. CST The Wauwatosa Police Department is releasing additional details about the investigation into the shooting at Mayfair Mall on Friday. Eight people were injured, and a 15-year-old Hispanic teen was taken into custody Saturday night. On Monday, WPD said the suspected shooter was arrested in Milwaukee after a traffic stop. The suspected weapon allegedly was recovered in the vehicle. A passenger also was arrested in connection with the shooting. A third person believed to be involved in the shooting has been taken into custody. No one has been charged, but WPD investigators are working with the district attorney’s office regarding charging. Police say an altercation between two groups led to the shooting. It’s unknown whether the altercation occurred at the mall. WPD says it’s unknown whether the incident was gang-related. According to police, the suspected shooter was able to leave the mall by running outside with a group of people who fled when they heard

On Thursday, people took to the streets again to protest Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisolm’s decision Wednesday not to criminally charge Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah. Mensah fatally shot 17-year-old Alvin Cole after being dispatched to Mayfair Mall for a disturbance earlier this year. Cole had a gun and Mensah has said he believed Cole shot at officers. Cole was Black, as is Mensah. Chisholm says he couldn’t prove Mensah wasn’t acting in self-defense. It was the third time Mensah shot and killed someone in the line of duty. Regular protests last summer called for Mensah to be charged – and ousted from the police department. Mensah is suspended, and an investigator’s report Wednesday advised that the Police and Fire Commission fire him because of the likelihood that he could kill a fourth person while on the job. The chair of Wauwatosa’s Equity and Inclusion Commission is among the people calling for Mensah to be terminated immediately. Sean Lowe says the
Black Lives Matter protesters were disappointed with Wednesday’s decision by Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm to not file criminal charges against Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah. Chisholm had reviewed Mensah's fatal shooting of a Black teenager, Alvin Cole, outside Mayfair Mall in February. The protests that followed Wednesday’s announcement were mostly peaceful, with some exceptions. More than 100 demonstrators stood in the middle of State Street outside the Milwaukee County Safety Building after Chisholm's finding was announced and began to chant Cole's name. READ: No Charges For Wauwatosa Officer In Killing Of Black Teen The group quickly left and headed south. Turns out, they were going to the Interstate 94 westbound ramp at 7th and Clybourn streets. Many of the protesters walked onto the freeway. But John McHugh says police knocked him off his bicycle and stopped him from going onto I-94. In a brief interview with reporters, McHugh defended the civil
READ: No Charges For Wauwatosa Officer In Killing Of Black Teen The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office could announce a decision Wednesday on whether to charge Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah in the death of Alvin Cole. Mensah shot Cole, who was 17-years-old, in February when responding to a disturbance at Mayfair Mall. Police say Cole ran and fired a weapon. His family disputes the claim. Cole was Black; so is Mensah. Cole was the third person to be killed by Mensah in 5 years. In the cases of the other two men, Antonio Gonzalez and Jay Anderson Jr., the district attorney’s office ruled those shootings justified. The DA’s decision regarding charges in Cole’s death comes during a tense time in the country, and locally, as the public fights against and condemns police violence toward Black and brown communities. Citizens of Wauwatosa, and the surrounding Milwaukee area, have called for justice, accountability and the removal of Mensah from the Wauwatosa Police Department
Protestors have targeted Wauwatosa recently because they believe officer Joseph Mensah should be fired. Officer Mensah, who is black, has been besieged by the Black Lives Matter movement after he killed a teenage suspect who fired a gun at him first at Mayfair Mall. The incident is under review. On Tuesday, the Tosa City Council held a public listening session. Some were there to make threats. “I've got a issue with the damn police because they were created to catch slaves, and we've got modern day slavery in America. And I know a few of you are scared of me, and that's okay. I'm not scared of y'all,” Henry Lee said. “I don't even need three minutes. But I'm going to tell you like this. Go ahead, fire Webber and convict Joseph Mensah. And if y'all don't convict Joseph Mensah and all you do is suspend him and he come back, I'm a ride around Tosa with a broken headlight until he find me.” Astonishingly, no one from the City Council spoke up to condemn this threat against Officer Mensah.
The family of a black teenager shot to death by Wauwatosa police outside Mayfair Mall in February wants all police officers in that Milwaukee suburb to wear body cameras. Relatives of Alvin Cole met Thursday with Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm to get an update on the review of the Feb. 2 shooting of Cole, who was 17. The Milwaukee Police Department has been investigating claims by Wauwatosa police that Cole had a gun and fired first. Families Of Men Shot By Wauwatosa Police Officer Rally And Call For Justice An attorney for the Coles, Kimberly Motley, says she gave Chisholm more evidence about what happened. Motley declined to be specific about what she provided, but said she would continue to provide video recordings, witness statements and names of additional witnesses. In the meantime, Motley wants Wauwatosa police to wear body cameras. "As we continue as citizens in the community, the Wauwatosa Police Department, like the Milwaukee Police Department, should wear
The current national protests against police brutality began nearly two weeks ago, when George Floyd died while in the custody of Minneapolis officers. In Milwaukee, there's a growing spotlight on Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah, who fatally shot 17-year-old Alvin Cole outside Mayfair Mall in February. The Milwaukee Police Department is reviewing the shooting. Wauwatosa police say Cole fired first with a stolen gun. But during a Saturday afternoon rally at N. 76th St. and W. Burleigh St. in Milwaukee, Cole's mother, Tracy Cole, said Mensah killed her baby boy. "He's a child. How dare Joseph take my son from me. My baby boy. I cannot sleep. I cannot function. I cannot think because you took my baby from me," Tracy Cole said. History Of Policing In America: Starts And Ends With Protecting Private Property Alvin Cole's sister, Taleavia Cole, said Alvin Cole was due to graduate from high school this spring, then join her this fall at Jackson State University in Mississippi. WTMJ's Libby Collins talks with Attorney Thomas Napierala about an incident that occurred October 12th at Mayfair Mall.
On today’s episode of Brandstorm, we welcome Terry Sweet, an award-winning music composer and jingle writer. Terry discusses the process in putting a brand’s message to music and why certain commercial jingles stick with us forever. Terry SweetHaving performed and written original music since he was a teenager, Terry Sweet spent his early days playing in rock bands. He was especially infatuated with acts like The Bee Gees, The Beatles and others who performed catchy pop songs that the industry dubbed "bubble gum," or upbeat tunes that are specially marketed to a teenage demographic. He entered the world of jingles by way of his friends' recording studio in downtown Milwaukee, where he worked as a session musician during the day and recorded his own material at night. Eventually, the studio lost their main client, and the potential of the studio closing was eminent, until one day, an ad agency called the studio seeking a jingle for Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, WI. The studio owners pondered the idea of becoming a jingle company, and offered Terry the chance at writing, recording and presenting the jingle to the agency, with the promise of a full-time job if all went according to plan. The agency loved the song, and since then, Terry has composed, arranged and produced hundreds of radio and television jingles for clients such as Allstate Insurance, Kellogg's Raisin Bran, John Deere, Kraft Foods and more. Locally, he has composed jingles for David Hobbs Honda, Colder's Furniture, 7 Mile Fair, Stein's Gardens & Gifts, and many others. He has also won several national advertising and broadcast awards. What Makes a Memorable JingleTerry believes there is a science behind why great jingles resonate with consumers. A clever melody and message, partnered with an interesting sound or talented singer, can have a big effect. He explains that music is the one form of expression that reaches an intersection within the brain of emotion, intellect and psychology. He points to the feeling we all get when we hear a familiar song and are seemingly transported to another time and place, being able to recall where we heard it, who we were with and how it made us feel. Touching on a positive memory, and then leading the customer to associate that memory with a brand, is the goal of most jingles. Repetition on television, radio or digital also plays a part, as the greatest jingle ever can't sell anything without an audience to hear it. Terry also mentions that from an early age, we can memorize a lot of information when tied to a simple melody. Nursery rhymes like "the Alphabet Song" or "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" are some of the most universally known songs to this day, and are evidence of our ability to recall specific information when coupled with an easy-to-remember earworm. What Comes First: Music or Lyrics?Though every project is different, Terry says most ad agencies have a theme or a specific tagline in mind that they would like a song built around. In the case of Colder's, it was important to have the phrase "Step Up" be the umbrella that all other information would fall under. Terry cites the Colder's campaign as the best he has ever worked on, due to the many variations the original message and tune have taken to promote different holiday sales, like Christmas or the Fourth of July. While some of the information Terry requires before beginning his process seem obvious -- who is the company, what is their product, etc. -- there are other key takeaways that he seeks. These include how the brand wants their name sung (as often there is a technical corporate name that could also be referenced) and what the target demographic is. As Terry tells us, selling sneakers to teenagers is different than selling luxury cars to Baby Boomers, so often the knowledge he has of the required demographic helps shape the musical direction of the jingle. Terry also asks what differentiates a company from their competitors. Is it their friendly staff? Their added convenience? Their affordability? For Terry, the process is more about business than it is about music. His job is to create a vehicle that will attract the attention of a specific target audience, accompanied by music that the audience likes and can relate to, along with a message that is compelling to them. Finding TalentThe community of musicians who consistently work in the studio isn't very large, Terry explains. While there are talented performers all over the world, those that know the advertising business and can sing with a smile or sell an idea through music are the artists that Terry needs. While some stars have recorded commercials after they've had their big break, others did so long before their worldwide success. For instance, Country Superstar Garth Brooks sent Terry his demo tape early in his career filled with songs that would eventually become gigantic hits. They ended up recording a jingle together for John Deere. What's NextTerry enjoys stepping out of the studio and playing for audiences at a few resorts in the area, staying as eclectic as he can and performing everything from classic rock to classical music. He also has three potential projects in the works: a travel documentary series; a cartoon program; and a feature film. Whether conducting orchestras for jingles or recording his own songs with likeminded musicians, Terry loves working with talented people who help bring additional life to his material.
