Ruling Elder John Hargett speaks at Meadowview's men's breakfast about the Sovereignty of God amidst the tragedies he's faced in his life. Yet, through it all He praises God. Be encouraged by this talk.
What's good Famiglia!? How we doin out there?! This week we have a special guest coming straight out of Sacramento, Meadowview to be exact. This fella is well known for his bars and has been spittin since he as 15 years old. On the cannabis side of things, he has always been around the fire tree and he has a crazy rosin head stash any hash head would appreciate! Back in 2019, when he was on an ankle monitor, he hit up his boy to make him some glass tips after being tired of the backwood resin leaking out of the back of the blunt. His boy whipped up 20 of them to test the waters and really quickly, he found himself with only 5 left because people kept taking them. So, he figured if they steal them, they'll buy them too! And the rest my friends is history as Rek Tipz is known all over the world! He is a proud father, an entrepreneur, and an all around stand up fella. Ladies and gents, you know what time it is... Roll em fat, torch your rigs, pack your bongs, do what you gotta do because we're about to take this journey with the homie D - Rek with Rek Tipz.BTW: If you sign up for our Soldier membership or above, the homie D Rek will bless you with an Italian colored Rek Tip! This offer will last until they're gone! What a guy! Mom Fred Fish and Jamie Feeling Abandoned I enjoyed your JibJab and have played it for Fred who was quite amazed. The cat picture and hat that Katie gave you yesterday are from Tim. I know you have all the hats and pictures you want but he seems to get great satisfaction in finding them for you. Hope your holidays have been happy. According to FaceBook things are going very well at BCR for which I am very pleased. Jamie looks happy with Victor and I am sure it is Victor's dream come true to be with her so much of the time. Things are going along pleasantly with me. Today Fred and I are going fishing for the third time. Needless to say, he loves to fish and I enjoy eating them so that works. I love you! Mom I responded: You will have to send me a good face shot of Fred so he can be one of the JibJabbers. Jamie and I got to talk for the first time in a long time yesterday while driving Noel to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for the bone repairs that Justin can't do in our hospital. She was sad that she's not heard from you since July. I told her you've been busy. The two trailers I loaned Marty money on arrived yesterday. They were 15 ‘5” inches wide and our gate is 15.9 so there was only 2 inches on each side, but they got them in. Jamie and Victor had to trim trees all the way down Meadowview and had to cut part of the gate off to make way. I feel safer with them here than abandoned on her lot. I'm trying to get a permit to put the modular on Racetrack Road. I'm so glad you and Fred have each other. It was heart warming to see you and Jen giggling like school girls over the thrill of new love. I love you too. Gift Shop, Bobcat Rehab and Feeding Volunteer Expansion Projects On May 15, 2016 I purchased a 48 x 72 foot, 1996 MH from Marty at AAA that had previously been a TECO office, for 42,000.00 It's purpose is to replace the 1200 SF Gift Shop so we can use the old Gift Shop for tour staging, inside in the A/C. Today it's getting new A/C and Victor Alonzo has been working for a week to pull out all of the rotted, moldy, walls and ceilings so we can replace and repair. I estimate that we will have 100k in it when done, but to build it would have been three times that. On June 28, 2016 we began our Bobcat Rehab expansion. That's turned out to be a $345,000.00 project that will give us 8 cages when done. We are about half way done with Cage #4 right now and will try these out for a while to be sure we like them. On Sept 28, 2016 I purchased a mobile home from Marty at AAA to put on the lot right outside our back gate where the little single wide called The Goose House sits. In Feb. 2017 I finally got AAA to move the Goose House to the side of Food Prep for Gale to use as a new Keeper Cafe, but the county is still jerking us around on permitting the new MH on the old site of the Goose House. I bought a lot of lots and trailers on Meadowview last year. Four at one time from one owner and a few others. Those projects are all going on now too, but the ones above have been my priority. That and webcams… Today one of our viewers snapped this of me, from the webcam I was trying to position out on Nabisco and Mrs Claws. Not enough signal though, so it's on Moses Bobcat for now. This week, we sat down with Mark and Justen of Tumbling Creek Cider Company out of Meadowview, Virginia. A relatively new cider company of only a few years providing a fine variety, Tumbling Creek Cider Company is a statement of SWVA entrepreneurship. Holding true to SWVA style, Tumbling Creek works with local businesses and orchards to keep their stock here at home. Tumbling Creek offers around five main ciders in their taproom: Moonshot Hellbender Ridgerunner Whitetop High Trestle Aside from these noticeable names, the guys at Tumbling Creek also experiment with seasonal flavors and offerings throughout the year which can be found at their taproom in Abingdon, Virginia. The team is made up of four professional individuals from different backgrounds: Jerry, Justen, Thomas, and Mark. Each partner brings to the team a different set of skills, which aids in the successful production of delicious cider. Their cider can be found in local eateries, grocery stores, and businesses within the SWVA region. My first experience with Tumbling Creek Cider Company was in the Fall of 2020 during a visit to the Harvest Table in Meadowview. I had a glass of Hellbender, which was in a perfect company to my New York Strip steak. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. 5/15/1997 Had to sneak our two mutts into the vet to have them neutered and spayed; something Don forbids. 5/16/1997 Don has been running all over the place accusing everyone of stealing his car phone and his handkerchiefs. He found the phone later that day under the seat of his car. Why would anyone steal a used hanky? 5/17/1997 At first light Don was off, with Sundari our six month old Leopard to go yard sale-ing. When he came home the refuge was very busy and the gates were open, as always on Saturdays. He got out of the van and left the windows down and the Leopard loose. Two of our Volunteers, Troy Valentine and Judy Watson discovered her hanging out the window and put her away. Don never asks before taking a cat and I have to watch him all the time to keep him from doing dangerous stuff like this. I got a call one day that he'd done the same thing with Sundari in a neighborhood, where she escaped and was scaring people half to death before he rounded her back up. 5/24/1997 I had to give a presentation in Arcadia with the cats and asked Don to feed for me. It is the second time I have asked him to do so. He forgot several of the cats and I had to recheck everyone when I got home. 5/25/1997 I had caught up a Bobcat (Elsa) and put her in a cage attached to a 1200 sq. ft pen, where Cerange just moved, in the hopes of acquainting the two before putting her in his pen. I told Don I wanted to make sure they were going to get along before opening the door. Behind my back he sneaked out there and let her out, but did not fasten the gate and she escaped. He did not tell me that she got away, so I don't know if he saw it or if she got out after he walked away. The next day a tour group saw her out and told me. When I asked Don how her door could have been opened and left standing open he said that he had done it. When we couldn't find Elsa anywhere on property, we began expanding our search outside our gates. Jamie went down N. Meadowview Circle and a neighbor said they thought they had seen her, so Dad, Jon, Kenny and I took nets and a big carrier. We found her in the backyard of a house on N. Meadowview, so we set the carrier up in the narrowest spot where the shrubbery came around the side of the house to the front. Some chased her from the back yard into the narrow space where she ran into the familiar carrier to escape them and Dad and I were able to slam the door shut behind her. Mai Vang has always been a trailblazer. She is a first generation Hmong-American, and the eldest of 16 children. As a young adult she started a non-profit to give political voice to her South Asian community. Now, she’s a school board member and aspiring Councilperson for Meadowview. Is it a thirst for power, a sense of altruism, or something else that drives her to working tirelessly for the public?
Margarita Chavez has the best house on the block. At least, that’s how she describes it to all who come to visit her in Detroit Park. She wants all of her neighbors to feel that same pride in their home. So Chavez patrols nearby streets to report neighborhood ills; trash, stray dogs and overgrown lawns. She’s a familiar voice to the city’s 311 operators — a squeaky wheel who knows how to get things done, for herself and her neighbors.
The team is still working on the next episode of Making Meadowview. So far, you’ve met people facing big community problems in south Sacramento. Next, we'll introduce you to Margarita Chavez. The retired grandma patrols her neighborhood and is determined to rid it of overgrown lawns, illegal trash piles and other eyesores. But what do her neighbors think? Find out next week.
Rolanda Wilkins grew up in Meadowview and lived through its crack epidemic in the 1980s. Now, she dedicates her life to empowering neighborhood girls, some of whom may be working through residual effects of the crack epidemic’s “lost generation.”
We’re excited to share the next episode with you — which we’re still producing. In the meantime, we’re going to share a few snippets of other stories we’ve gathered during the past year CapRadio has been in Meadowview. When an unarmed black man named Stephon Clark was killed by police there in 2018, it reinforced negative stereotypes about the neighborhood. We decided to ask residents how they define their neighborhood and why they choose to live there.
Teenager Lamajhe Miles wants to be a professional football player one day. And he has the talent. But without a bed to sleep on, poor grades and bad influences all around him, all he has is his will.
Meadowview residents still talk about how much they loved Officer Dan Ware, one of Sacramento’s first black policeman. He often patrolled by foot, and as a baseball coach, he was a role model for young neighborhood boys. But he also had personal battles with his employers at the Sacramento Police Department.
A large community of Pacific Islanders lives in Meadowview, attending Christian churches and public schools. When members of the Tongan community were becoming active in criminal gangs, elders brought them back to their roots by teaching them Polynesian dance.
