In November 1945, James Newton, a young World War II veteran, was shot four times—twice in the back—in his room at an Abingdon, Virginia boardinghouse owned by Helen Clark. She would soon stand trial for his murder, as speculation swirled about the true nature of their relationship. Was she a protective, motherly figure trying to prevent Jimmy from taking his own life, or had she killed him in a fit of jealousy? Greg Lilly joins me to disuss the case. He is the author of "Abingdon's Boardinghouse Murder". More about the author and his work on his website: https://www.greglilly.com/ His publisher page: Learn more about your ad choices. The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast

On this podcast, the questions are set by you, the listeners. Even though the questions are often detached from the environment, we always try and bring back the discussion to it in some way.In today's episode, Stuart and William, your co-hosts, chew the fat over two intriguing questions, the first of which comes from Bartek in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England - “I have not asked any question since 2020 I don't think, but always listen whilst I work. I see some of the UK royal family are pushing forward anti homelessness and anti domestic abuse projects. Should they abstain from such things or should they use their status in these ways?”Stuart feels an undercurrent from the question, that Bartek  is possibly an anti monarchist. He sees the question being more “should they exist and should they be sticking their nose in if they do?” His conclusion though, is that the royal family do have a status in society, and they should be doing something good, however he often feels they do more bad than good.Throughout this discussion, both Stuart and William in some way, express anti-monarchy sentiment, which deviates from Bartek's question a bit, but that is how they rock on this podcast, they often allow the conversation to weave and meander, like a shopping trolly with a dodgy wheel, as you never know where the conversation might lead? The second question comes from a listener that William is, for no reason at all, particularly afraid of, that person being Debs in Didcot, Oxfordshire, England - “1 in ten (if not more) of 4 year olds in the UK are considered obese. Yet when parents are advised how to help their children lose wait, they often close their ears. Is that because as a nation we're not emotionally mature enough to take this feedback on board?”William starts the conversation by bringing up how people don't like to be told when they are doing something wrong in their lives. Off the back of this bold statement, Stuart relates a story from his time in Manchester, how a group of kids were seen as feral, and their parents weren't bothered as it was how they were brought up, and it hadn't harmed them in their opinion.Stuart and William then steer the conversation towards how we need to consider the impact of cheap processed foods. Stuart sees it as an  indication of the lifestyle, the processes we live by. That it isn't all down to telling parents how to bring up their children better. He feels that we need to look at the whole way we live.Stuart's conclusion for this question: we need to  put systems in place to allow people to make better decisions.William concludes that a good community can also make a positive impact. The difference between a person in power like a teacher, and a member of your own community advising you, can make a big difference. What do you make of this discussion? fWotD Episode 2895: Empress Matilda Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 8 April 2025 is Empress Matilda.Empress Matilda (c. 7 February 1102 – 10 September 1167), also known as Empress Maud, was one of the claimants to the English throne during the civil war known as the Anarchy. The daughter and heir of Henry I, king of England and ruler of Normandy, she went to Germany as a child when she was married to the future Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. She travelled with the emperor to Italy in 1116, was controversially crowned empress in St Peter's Basilica, and acted as the imperial regent in Italy. Matilda and Henry V had no children, and when he died in 1125, the imperial crown was claimed by his rival Lothair of Supplinburg.Matilda's younger and only full brother, William Adelin, died in the White Ship disaster of 1120, leaving Matilda's father and realm facing a potential succession crisis. Upon her widowhood in the Holy Roman Empire, Matilda was recalled to Normandy by her father, who arranged for her to marry Geoffrey of Anjou to form an alliance to protect his southern borders in France. Henry I had no further legitimate children and nominated Matilda as his heir, making his court swear an oath of loyalty to her and her successors, but the decision was not popular in his Anglo-Norman court. Henry died in 1135, but Matilda and Geoffrey faced opposition from the barons. The throne was instead taken by Matilda's male cousin Stephen of Blois, who enjoyed the backing of the English Church. Stephen took steps to solidify his new regime but faced threats both from neighbouring powers and from opponents within his kingdom. In 1139, Matilda crossed to England to take the kingdom by force, supported by her half-brother Robert, Earl of Gloucester, and her uncle David I of Scotland, while her husband, Geoffrey, focused on conquering Normandy. Matilda's forces captured Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141, but her attempt to be crowned at Westminster Abbey collapsed in the face of bitter opposition from the London crowds. As a result of this retreat, Matilda was never formally declared Queen of England, and was instead titled "Lady of the English" (Latin: domina Anglorum). Earl Robert was captured following the Rout of Winchester in 1141, and Matilda agreed to exchange him for Stephen. Matilda was besieged at Oxford Castle by Stephen's forces that winter, but escaped at night across the frozen River Isis (Thames) to Abingdon, reputedly wearing white as camouflage in the snow. The war degenerated into a stalemate, with Matilda controlling much of the south-west of England, and Stephen the south-east and the Midlands. Large parts of the rest of the country were in the hands of local, independent barons.Matilda returned to Normandy, now in the hands of her husband, in 1148, leaving their eldest son to continue the campaign in England; he was eventually declared Stephen's heir after the signing of the Treaty of Wallingford and succeeded to the throne as Henry II in 1154, forming the Angevin Empire. She settled her court near Rouen and for the rest of her life concerned herself with the administration of Normandy, acting on her son's behalf when necessary. Particularly in the early years of her son's reign, she provided political advice and attempted to mediate during the Becket controversy. She worked extensively with the Church, founding Cistercian monasteries, and was known for her piety. She was buried under the high altar at Bec Abbey after her death in 1167, until much later when her tomb was moved to Rouen Cathedral. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:01 UTC on Tuesday, 8 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Empress Matilda on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Niamh.

My Story   Talk 1 Family Background and World War 2   Introduction Welcome back to Great Bible Truths with me, Dr David Petts.  As this podcast will go out live in early January let me take this opportunity to wish you God's richest blessings for the coming year. Let me also apologise that my website was down for several weeks, but the good news is that it's now up and running again.   Now, as I mentioned in my last talk at the end of our series on Mark's Gospel, this year, God willing, I'm planning both to write and record my memoirs in order to place on record God's goodness throughout my life, from the moment of conception in my mother's womb, right through to this present time. I also hope that the things I record may be of some historical and sociological interest, particular to younger people.   What's more, I'm convinced that, if he can bless me, he can bless you too, and my purpose in doing this is to encourage your faith, if you are already a Christian, and, if you're not, to persuade you that, if you put your trust in Christ as your personal Saviour, you will discover how trustworthy and faithful he is.   Some of God's miraculous interventions in my life have already been recorded in some of my books, notably in Signs from Heaven – why I Believe and The Voice of God – how he speaks to us today. But there's still so much more to tell, and friends and family have been encouraging me that now is the time to get on and do it. And, even more importantly, I feel that God himself is prompting me to do so.   Now you may be wondering why I am including talks about my personal experience under the general heading of Great Bible Truths. That's an understandable question, but the answer is simply that as Christians our lives are meant to illustrate and demonstrate how the truth of God's Word works out in practice. In 2 Corinthians 3:2 Paul talks about the Corinthians themselves as a letter… known and read by everyone. And, although in the context Paul is talking about his readers as the living proof of his apostolic ministry, there seems to be here an underlying principle that our lives are, or at least should be, living testimonies to the truth we believe.   And finally, by way of introduction, I need to say that I am very well aware that, again in the words of the apostle Paul, By the grace of God, I am what I am (1 Corinthians 15:10). Whatever we are, whatever we have done, whatever gifts and talents we may have, it's all by the grace of God. And all the glory must always go to him. But now to my story.   My parents My story, of course, begins with my parents. Stanley and Ivy Petts (née Claus) were both born in Poplar, East London, in September 1907. Their home backgrounds were very different. Mum's childhood was very difficult, her father often coming home drunk. Her mother died before I was born. She left six children, two boys, Harry and Bill, and four girls, Minnie, Lily, Ivy, and Addie. As far as I know, only Minnie and my mum, Ivy, ever became Christians.   On the other hand, my dad's family were all Christians attending the Poplar and Bromley Baptist Tabernacle, affectionately known as The Tab, and it was there that my dad met my mum. Dad had three sisters, Lily, Violet, and May. May was born deaf and dumb – that's how it's recorded on the national register – but, as I've already recorded in my book Signs from Heaven, was miraculously healed in answer to prayer .   When she was in her twenties, my grandmother took her to a divine healing  meeting conducted by the evangelist, George Jeffreys , who placed his hands on her and prayed  for her.   That evening, as they were travelling home to Poplar in the East End of London, they went down to catch the underground train. Suddenly, with a shocked expression on her face, May  put both hands over her ears. She could hear the roar of the train as it came through the tunnel approaching the platform!   Until that moment, from the day she was born she had never been able to hear, but now she could hear, and within a few weeks was beginning to speak.   I suppose that's why I've never doubted God's miracle  working power and firmly believe that we should expect to see miracles today.   Mum and Dad were married on August 4th 1934 and lived with his parents until they were able to afford a home of their own. During the time they were there, my mother sadly had a miscarriage and, as my father told me years later, the doctor had expressed the opinion that she might be unable to have children. But they prayed that, in my mother's words, the Lord would give her a son, and that he would go into all the world and preach the gospel. But I knew nothing of all this until I was sixteen when I told my parents that I believed that God was calling me to serve him as a minister.   In 1937 Mum and Dad moved into their own home, a new-build semi-detached house in Hornchurch, which, with the help of a mortgage, they were able to purchase for the princely sum of – wait for it – £630 (six hundred and thirty pounds)! Prices for similar properties in the same area today are closer to £630,000!   I was born in the front bedroom of that house on January 12th 1939, and my late wife Eileen was born 6 days earlier in Stockport, Cheshire. That was just eight months before Britain declared war on Germany on 3rd September 1939. Of course, I was too young to remember very much of the early years of the war, but I was already 6 years old when the war ended and have just a few memories of what life was like at the time.   Earliest Memories During the first part of the war, between 1939 and 1941, because Hornchurch was an area that was likely to be bombed, my mother and I were evacuated to a village called Marcham (near to Abingdon). We stayed in a vicarage with the vicar and his wife (Rev and Mrs Palmer). I have no clear memories of that time, although I do remember the vicarage, from when we went back to visit them after the war.   My father wasn't with us for much of the time because, although he was not in the armed forces as he was a conscientious objector, he was sent as a schoolteacher to what was called an Approved School (which was where they used to send juvenile delinquents). It was a residential establishment near Woking in Surrey and my dad had to live there much of the time, so we didn't see much of him as it was some distance from where we were in Marcham, and in those days very few people had cars.   In 1941 my father was transferred to a different Approved School. This was nearer to Hornchurch and so my mother and I left Marcham and returned home to be nearer to my father. However, our house was less than half a mile from Hornchurch aerodrome, which played a very important part in the Battle of Britain. So there was still a very real danger of being bombed by enemy aircraft.   My main memories of those early years were having to take refuge in an air-raid shelter whenever the siren sounded. (The siren gave a very loud signal when enemy aircraft were approaching and a different signal called the ‘all-clear' when the danger was over). There were two kinds of shelter, the Morrison shelter and the Anderson shelter.   We had a Morrison shelter which was like a very strong table, made of steel, which you had indoors. I can remember having to go underneath it at night when the siren sounded – we slept on the floor underneath it. I can also remember banging my head on it as I was getting out from underneath it! All the houses had to have ‘blackouts' to cover the windows at night so that enemy aircraft would not see the light in the house.   I remember my mum peeping out from behind the blackout during one of the raids and telling me that she could see a Spitfire chasing off a German plane. I can't remember ever feeling afraid. Perhaps it was because I was too young to understand the danger, but also because of my mum's confidence that God would keep us safe.   Other people had Anderson shelters. These were in the garden, dug into the ground, and made of corrugated iron – rather like some of the things pig farmers use to shelter their pigs today. The infant school I went to from the age of four in September 1943 had a large version of one of these which was big enough for all the children to get into if there was a raid during school-time. I can only remember going into it once but can't remember much more about it.   Quite recently, however, I discovered that an enemy aircraft had crashed into the secondary school which was only about 100 yards from my infant school, and I have wondered if this had coincided with the time we were all in the air raid shelter. Of course, I have no way of knowing this, but I am so grateful that our lives were spared throughout that awful time when so many others lost theirs.     When the war ended, all over the country people held parties in the street to celebrate. (There were not many cars around in those days!) I remember we had a big bonfire in the middle of the road – something which I imagine would not be allowed today – and the concrete was broken up where the bonfire had been.   My final memory of the war and the years that followed it is what was called ‘rationing'. Because there was a great shortage of food and clothing during that time people were given ration books with coupons in. To buy something (including sweets!) you needed not only money, but coupons. I remember my mum being pleased with me because I had bigger feet than most of the children. It meant she was allowed extra clothing coupons! The rationing went on for some time after the war and I well remember the first time we were allowed to buy as many sweets as we liked because there was no more rationing!   But now it's time to finish for today, so let's summarise by asking what Bible truths have been illustrated by the experiences I have been talking about. The first of these truths is that God answers believing prayer. Despite what she had been told, my mother prayed for a son, and God answered her prayer. Secondly, nothing is impossible with God. There was no medical cure for my aunt's condition, but God worked a miracle in response to the evangelist's prayer. This shows us, thirdly, that God still grants supernatural gifts like healing as signs confirming the truth of the gospel. We also see that God has a purpose for our lives and that he is able to protect us from danger in order to fulfil it.         Next time I'll be talking about the years after the war, my time at primary school, and my first experience of Sunday school and going to church.

Send us a textThis episode features Robert Holloway, who has been in our sport for 35 years.Robert says  " I played football to a reasonable standard until I was 16 and like most kids of mygeneration I was very active either doing a 3 mile walk to school there and back andthen kicking a ball around when I got home. Not much happened sport's wise until early 1984 when my colleagues at work dared me to compete in the Civil Service and Post Office half marathon at Windsor Great Park. Training was slow to start with but I persevered and finished in a time of 1hr 34m. Those in the know told me that that was a good time for a newbie so then decision was taken to give this running lark a go. I joined my local running club, Woking AC, and was soon taking part in a number of local road races. By 1986 In had built up my training volume to have a crack at the full marathon distance. I chose the 1986 Abingdon marathon to pop my marathon cherry and finished in a time of 2hrs 54m. That time gave me the incentive to pursue marathon running as my preferred distance and in 1987 my crowning glory came at the London Marathon when I clocked 2hrs 42m. I then set my sights on breaking the 2hrs 40m barrier but all those weeks of 100 mile training took their toll and it was a case of managing one lower leg injury after another. My road running days were not what they used to be but rescue came in the form of a running magazine article on this new fangled sport called triathlon. I could clearly run a bit and always enjoyed swimming and could ride a bike so why not give it ago? I entered the Wokingham Try a Tri sprint triathlon in 1989. I. I can't recall my time but I must have enjoyed it because some 35 years later I am still competing in triathlon and multisport. In 2009 not only my triathlon World but my Whole World collapsed around me. It turned out that I had suffered a major bilateral pulmonary embolism preceded by a blood clot that had found its way into both of my lungs. Needless tosay my triathlon days were put on hold.In good time I got back into something like normal training but didn't compete until 2014 when, on a whim, I entered the Hever Castle sprint triathlon. To myastonishment I came home with an age group win and another trophy for the cabinet! I continued to train and compete at a reasonable standard but in 2016 at age 62 I decided that I had achieved everything I wanted to achieve in the sport and called it a day. Or so I thought!Turning the clock forward to 2019 and the onset of covid, I was still working full time but without any sporting activity for about three years or so I had managed to put on almost four stone over my normal racing weight of ten stone. I was soon working from home and the temptation to go out for a run in the vain hope of losing weight became too strong. As the weight melted away I discovered that I was pretty useful on the bike and the run so much so that within a year I had qualified for and competed in the World Duathlon Championships in Aviles. Other championship events followed in Bilbao, Ibiza and more recently, Coimbra where I achieved my best ever finish of fifth place and third Brit home in the 70-74 age group. I have my eyes on a 70.3 event in 2026, possibly Jeselo, and in 2027 I would hopeto qualify for the World multisport championships in Edmonton, Canada. I also want to experiment with aquabike and aquathlon. In today's episode of The Halloween Podcast, host Lyle Perez takes us through the haunted corners of Virginia, a state rich in American history and ghostly legends. From the infamous battlefields of the Civil War to eerie mansions and mysterious bridges, Virginia's haunted sites reveal stories of lingering spirits and tragic pasts. Join us as we uncover 10 of the most haunted locations in the Old Dominion, where Confederate soldiers, ghostly nurses, and lost lovers are said to roam. Featured Locations: St. Albans Sanatorium 6248 University Park Dr, Radford, VA 24141 Originally an all-boys' school before its conversion to a mental hospital in the early 20th century, St. Albans has become one of Virginia's most infamous paranormal sites. Known for harsh experimental treatments, the sanatorium is said to be haunted by the spirits of former patients. The basement is particularly eerie, where visitors report hearing disembodied whispers, feeling phantom touches, and seeing shadowy figures. Paranormal investigators frequently capture EVP recordings, especially near the old hydrotherapy room, where many experienced immense suffering. Hollywood Cemetery 412 S Cherry St, Richmond, VA 23220 Established in 1847, Hollywood Cemetery is the eternal resting place of Confederate soldiers, U.S. presidents, and the infamous “Richmond Vampire.” The legend of the vampire centers on the tomb of W.W. Poole, from which strange noises are said to emanate at night. Visitors have reported seeing ghostly soldiers, feeling chills near the Confederate burial grounds, and even catching glimpses of General Robert E. Lee, his figure silently wandering the cemetery grounds as if reliving his past. The Exchange Hotel 400 S Main St, Gordonsville, VA 22942 The Exchange Hotel became a Civil War hospital, treating thousands of soldiers. With its storied past, it's no surprise that ghostly nurses are reportedly seen tending to invisible patients. In the basement, which once served as a morgue, visitors have heard eerie moaning and footsteps echoing through the otherwise empty halls. The ghost of a Confederate soldier is a frequent sight, believed to be lingering, perhaps waiting to be reunited with lost comrades. Bacon's Castle 465 Bacon's Castle Trail, Surry, VA 23883 Constructed in 1665, Bacon's Castle has borne witness to rebellions, family feuds, and ghostly occurrences. Visitors report encounters with a woman in colonial clothing, believed to be Arthur Allen's wife. Paranormal investigators have witnessed furniture moving on its own and heard laughter in empty rooms. The house is a frequent site for ghost tours, with guides sharing tales of sudden chills, strange lights, and objects shifting mysteriously. The Martha Washington Inn & Spa 150 W Main St, Abingdon, VA 24210 Once a Civil War hospital, the Martha Washington Inn has its share of restless spirits. A particularly famous legend involves the spirit of a young nurse, known as the “Yankee Sweetheart,” who fell in love with a Union soldier. Guests report hearing her soft footsteps in the halls and glimpsing her shadow near the spot where her beloved died. Other ghostly sightings include Confederate soldiers and eerie bloodstains that appear on the floors before mysteriously vanishing. Gadsby's Tavern Museum 138 N Royal St, Alexandria, VA 22314 Dating back to the 18th century, Gadsby's Tavern is haunted by the mysterious “Female Stranger,” who arrived gravely ill and, upon her death, requested her identity remain secret. Seen frequently in Room 8, her ghostly figure leaves cold spots and an eerie sensation for those who venture close. Visitors and staff alike have also reported phantom footsteps echoing through the tavern's historic rooms. Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historic State Park 6541 Saylers Creek Rd, Rice, VA 23966 The bloody Battle of Sailor's Creek saw nearly 25% of General Robert E. Lee's army fall. Visitors report ghostly figures wandering the battlefield at dusk, and cold spots are often felt around the Overton-Hillsman Farmhouse, which served as a makeshift hospital. The battlefield is known for mysterious cries and the faint sound of cannon fire, as if the battle is replaying for eternity. The Public Hospital 325 W Francis St, Williamsburg, VA 23185 Established in 1773, the Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds is the oldest psychiatric hospital in the U.S. Shadows, sudden cold chills, and unsettling whispers haunt the halls. Visitors report feeling phantom touches and hearing footsteps in rooms long since abandoned, with occasional sightings of patients in old-fashioned hospital gowns. Swannanoa Palace 497 Swannanoa Ln, Afton, VA 22920 This grand estate, built as a testament to love, is haunted by the ghost of Sallie Dooley, who is often seen near her stained-glass portrait. Visitors feel sudden chills and see objects move on their own, especially around Sallie's favorite rooms. Paranormal investigators have captured EVPs and other strange occurrences, making Swannanoa a popular stop for thrill-seekers. Bunny Man Bridge Colchester Overpass, Clifton, VA 20124 The tale of Bunny Man Bridge is one of Virginia's most chilling urban legends. Locals report seeing a man dressed in a bunny suit wielding an axe near the bridge, especially on Halloween. Some say he's the spirit of an escaped convict who haunts the bridge, while others claim the presence is something darker. Witnesses often hear unsettling noises like screams and whispers, making Bunny Man Bridge a must-visit for those seeking a real scare. Francesco Pisano, Director of the Library & Archives discusses the intersection of artificial intelligence, democracy, and international relations with Professor Jérôme Duberry from the Geneva Graduate Institute. With AI rapidly evolving and influencing political practices, diplomacy, and global governance, understanding its societal implications is more important than ever. In this episode, Professor Duberry shares his insights on the dual nature of AI in democracy, highlighting both the hopes and concerns it raises. From micro-targeting in political campaigns to AI's role in shaping global policies, we explore how AI is reshaping the way we access information and engage in democratic processes. As AI becomes a vital tool in diplomatic practice, we discuss its potential to augment human decision-making and the ethical considerations surrounding its use. Professor Duberry also sheds light on the challenges of governing AI on an international scale, examining the debates around AI ethics and regulation. Finally, we address the importance of AI literacy, particularly for the younger generation, to ensure informed participation in shaping the future of technology. Tune in to gain a comprehensive understanding of AI's impact on our world and the critical need for inclusive governance. Books by Jérôme Duberry: Duberry, J. (2022). We cannot achieve food security or climate stability without restoring nature according to a new report from Natural England, which outlines the value of the natural world to our society and our economy. The State of Natural Capital Report says the wildlife and countryside in England should be seen as a 'National Wealth Service' - an economic asset which is vital to national prosperity. It puts a figure on the value of some natural services - for instance it claims pollination is worth around 500 million pounds to agriculture.Thames Water wants to build a new reservoir near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, which could hold 150 billion litres of water! It would cover 4 and half square miles and the company says it would secure future water supply for 15 million people across the South East. But local campaigners say Thames Water should focus on reducing water leakage, before building it. We hear from one farmer facing a compulsory purchase order of some of their land if the plans are approved. And farmers are getting the highest price for their beef animals in England and Wales, for ten years. Part of the reason, according to Meat Promotion Wales (Hybu Cig Cymru), is growing domestic demand.Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons

The body of 36-year-old evangelist Richard Malinga was found in the evening at Kayete Swamp in the Butebo District after he had texted his pastor that he was surrounded by Muslims. A local resident found the victim dead, in a pool of blood, and tied with ropes. Please pray that God would unmistakenly reveal Himself to these Muslim murderers, that they would repent, and profess Jesus Christ as their Savior. Biden v. Trump: Differing visions on the economy During last Thursday night's presidential debate, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump laid out starkly different visions. BIDEN: “His economy, he rewarded the wealthy. He had the largest tax cut in American history -- $2 trillion. You raised the deficit larger than any President has in any one term. He's the only president of the Herbert Hoover who's lost more jobs than he had when he began, since Herbert Hoover.” TRUMP: “The only thing he was right about is I gave you the largest tax cut in history. That's why we had all the jobs and the jobs went down and then they bounced back. “He's taking credit for bounced back jobs. You can't do that. He also said he inherited 9% inflation. No, he inherited almost no inflation and it stayed that way for 14 months. And then it blew up under his leadership because they spent money like a bunch of people that didn't know what they were doing. And they don't know what they were doing. It was the worst, probably the worst administration in history.” Biden falsely claimed he has better control of border than Trump Jake Tapper asked President Biden about the open border which he sanctioned. TAPPER: “President Biden, a record number of migrants have illegally crossed the southern border on your watch, overwhelming border states and overburdening cities such as New York and Chicago, and in some cases, causing real safety and security concerns. Given that, why should voters trust you to solve this crisis?” BIDEN: “Because we worked very hard to get a bipartisan agreement that not only changed all of that, but made sure that we are in a situation where you had no circumstance where they could come across the border with the number of border police that there are now. We significantly increased the number of asylum officers. “What I've done, since I've changed the law, what's happened? I've changed it in a way that now they're 40% fewer people coming across the border illegally. It's better than when he left office. And I'm going to continue to move until we get the total ban on the total initiative, relative to what we can do with more Border Patrol and more asylum officers.” TAPPER: “President Trump?” TRUMP: “I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don't think he knows what he said, either. “Look, we had the safest border in the history of our country. All he had to do was leave it. He decided to open up our border, open up our country to people that are from prisons, people that are from mental institutions, insane asylum, terrorists. We have the largest number of terrorists coming into our country right now, all terrorists, all over the world, not just in South America, all over the world they come from the Middle East, everywhere. “He didn't need legislation because I didn't have legislation. I said, ‘Close the border.' We had the safest border in history. In that final couple of months of my presidency, we had the safest border in history. Now, we have the worst border in history.” Are Trump supporters a threat to American democracy? Tapper asked Biden to defend one of his wild campaign claims. JAKE TAPPER: “President Biden, you have said, ‘Donald Trump and his [“Make America Great Again”] Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy. Do you believe that the tens of millions of Americans who are likely to vote for President Trump will be voting against American democracy?” BIDEN: “More they know about what he's done, yes. The more they know about what he's done.” Biden's committed to veto any national abortion ban On the abortion question, Biden committed to veto any national abortion ban if the Republicans gain a majority in the Senate and he is re-elected. BIDEN: “What he going to do, if in fact the [“Make America Great Again” Republicans and he gets elected, and the MAGA Republicans control the Congress, and they pass a universal ban on abortion period across the board at six weeks or seven or eight or 10 weeks, something very, very conservative? Is he gonna sign that bill? I'll veto it. He'll sign it.” CNN Poll: Trump trounced Biden in debate Registered voters who watched CNN's presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump largely think Trump outperformed Biden, according to a CNN poll of debate watchers conducted by Social Science Research Solutions. In the poll, 67% thought Trump was the better debater.  And, oddly enough, 33% thought Biden won the debate, reports CNN. Most said they have no real confidence in Biden's ability to lead the country. Kelly Ann Conway: Biden “can't do the job” Appearing on Fox News Channel's Special Report with Brett Baier, former Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway was blunt in her analysis of Biden's debate performance. CONWAY: “Joe Biden asked for this debate. He basically begged for this debate to save his presidency. And he's now harmed it even more. “The serious point is the one that people take away from this, which is this: This is a man who can't do the job. What's wrong with that? By the way, can't we admit that everybody has a relative who's in a situation like this? I hope Joe Biden lives another 20 years. I just think it should be spent in Delaware ASAP. “You [Brett Baier] and Peter Doocy just said the two magic words as to why it's not easy to remove Joe Biden and hasn't been easy for the 18 months they should have done it: Kamala Harris, people fear her. The fact that you even mentioned [California Governor] Gavin Newsom and [Michigan Governor] Gretchen Whitmer. How are we not mentioning the black woman Vice President? It's because she shed 20 senior staffers, because nobody has confidence in her competence. They are scared about her being the president. And I think that's a very important point here.” Justice of peace cannot be forced to officiate “gay” faux weddings On Friday, the Supreme Court of Texas ruled in favor of Dianne Hensley, a justice of the peace in Waco, who had been reprimanded for not performing homosexual faux weddings, reports The Christian Post. The court also reinstated her lawsuit against the State Commission on Judicial Conduct. The commission had previously issued a public warning for her refusal to officiate faux homosexual weddings, citing a violation of judicial impartiality based on perverted sexual preference. Oklahoma requires a Bible in every classroom Oklahoma officials announced Thursday the state is requiring a copy of the Bible to be in every public school classroom, beginning immediately, reports The Oklahoman. In a press conference, Ryan Walters, Superintendent of Oklahoma Public Schools, explained that the Bible was essentially foundational to America. WALTERS: “The Bible is a necessary historical document to teach our kids about the history of this country, to have a complete understanding of Western civilization, to have an understanding of the basis of our legal system, and is frankly, we're talking about the Bible, one of the most foundational documents used for the Constitution and the birth of our country. “It is essential that our kids have an understanding of the Bible and its historical context.” Proverbs 30:5 says, “Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” 32 Worldview listeners donated $6,837 And finally, toward our $84,000 final goal in our month-long fundraiser, 32 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate on Friday and Saturday to help fund our 6-member team for another fiscal year. Our thanks to Julia in Goodyear, Arizona and Barbara in Hephzibah, Georgia – both of whom gave $10 as well as Faith in Thomson, Georgia, Micah and Anna in Canby, Oregon, and Jill in Saugerties, New York – each of whom gave $25. We appreciate Edwin in Cedar Hill, Princes Town, Trinidad who gave $30 as well as Cherise in Bennett, Colorado, Karen in Waterford, Wisconsin, and Theresa in Port Orchard, Washington – each of whom gave $50, Marie and Steven in Plainview, Texas who gave $62, 17-year-old Trevor in Madill, Oklahoma who gave $70, and Karl in Spicewood, Texas who gave $85 We're grateful to God for Janice in Prescott, Arizona, Heather in Eagle, Idaho, Helen in San Diego, California, Marty in Winchester, Oregon, Jody in Westerlo, New York, Micah in Buckeye, Arizona, Gabrielle in Goodyear, Arizona, Jan in  Greenville, South Carolina, and Thane in Robinson, Illinois – each of whom gave $100. We're thankful for the gifts of Kara in Abingdon, Virginia who pledged $10/month for 12 months for a gift of $120, Joel and Heidi in Columbus, Nebraska who gave $125, as well as Tom in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada and Sean in Burlington, Wisconsin – both of whom gave $200. We were touched by the sacrifice of Victoria in Paradise, Pennsylvania, Lisa in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, and Edwin in Wellsburg, Iowa – each of whom pledged $25/month for 12 months for a gift of $300, Debbie in Wurtsboro, New York who gave $300, Justin in Wray, Colorado who gave $500, David in Northumberland, Pennsylvania who pledged $50/month for 12 months for a gift of $600, as well as David and Alexis in Crittendon, Kentucky who gave $2,500. Those 32 donors gave $6,837.  Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $86,975! (audience cheering) We not only reached our $84,000 goal, but we surpassed it by $2,975.  On behalf of Rebekah Swanson and Kayla White who select the image and upload the newscast onto multiple platforms, Emily Munday who researches some of the stories, as well as Kevin Swanson, Jonathan Clark, and myself who write the newscast, thank you for voting with your treasure to enable us to continue for another year. Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Why Kentucky listeners gave $2,500 to The Worldview And finally, on Saturday night, I called Alexis in Crittendon, Kentucky. She and her husband David made a $2,500 donation to The Worldview. She explained what she appreciates about the newscast. ALEXIS: “I like that it's from a Christian standpoint and that I can get the news without having to get all the junk with it in this day and age. I've been listening to it since I was 16. I just really appreciate you guys and all that you do with it.” She recalled one story that stood out. ALEXIS: “We live in Kentucky and there was that truck driver that went over the bridge that I heard about, but didn't really know the full story. But then you guys covered the full story. I really appreciated that and thought it was really neat that she was a Christian and that she was praying and everything during the whole circumstance and just how much of a miracle it was that they rescued her.” Here's a soundbite from that truck driver whose truck got into an accident on the bridge which sent it careening through the railing, and then was dangling above the Ohio River. TRUCK DRIVER: “If I start freaking out and screaming and moving around, the truck might fall into the river. I was praying. I was crying. And I was trying to just stay calm and just hope and pray that they would be able to get me out because I didn't think they will be able to.” When I told Alexis that the donation which her husband, David, and she had made, enabled us to meet and surpass our $84,000 fundraising goal, she said this. ALEXIS: “Praise the Lord! I'm so happy that we were able to help.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, July 1st, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. It's Friday, June 14th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus North Korea sent 1,400 helium balloons with manure and trash to South Korea South Korean Christian ministries have sent GPS-guided balloons carrying pages of Scripture and USB devices featuring the Bible into North Korea where owning a Bible can be punishable by execution. In retaliation for what it calls “anti-North Korean propaganda,” North Korea, led by the dictator Kim Jong Un, sent more than 1,400 helium balloons filled with trash and manure into South Korea, reports International Christian Concern. The South Korean military has intercepted many of the balloons.  In response to the helium balloon-delivered manure and trash, South Korean officials resumed loudspeaker broadcasts at specific border areas. Subsequently, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, warned South Korea that these loudspeaker broadcasts, leaflets, and USB devices could soon provoke a “crisis of confrontation” between the two nations.   She  added that the manure and trash balloons were “sincere presents” sent to the “goblins of liberal democracy who are crying for the guarantee of freedom of expression.” Join me and specifically pray Ezekial 36:26 for Kim Jong Un and his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who are spiritually lost.  The verse describes how God “will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” According to Open Doors, North Korea is the world's most dangerous country in which to be a Christian. Trans World Radio, which broadcasts into North Korea from South Korea, received an email from a North Korean listener who said, “Without your programs, love and dedication, we would not have access to the Gospel of our Father in Heaven and we would be lost." Supreme Court allows Abortion Kill Pill to be sent through mail Yesterday, the Supreme Court made a terrible decision. It ruled against pro-life doctors and others who challenged the Food and Drug Administration's decision to loosen restrictions on the distribution of the Abortion Kill Pill, reports LifeSiteNews.com. In the unanimous decision in the case titled FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote, “The plaintiffs lack standing to sue to stop the law. Specifically, the FDA's regulations apply to doctors prescribing mifepristone and to pregnant women taking mifepristone. But the plaintiff doctors and medical associations do not prescribe or use mifepristone.” The Food and Drug Administration decided to make chemical abortion as widely available as possible as part of the Biden-Harris pro-abortion agenda. Dr. Ingrid Skop, the Medical Director of the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Institute, previously said, “The FDA's decision to weaken commonsense safeguards, removing doctors from the process, shows they prioritize ending unborn life over the health and safety of women.” In addition to directly ending an innocent human life, abortion drugs are also dangerous for women. Side effects and complications that accompany chemical abortions are: pain, possibly severe heavy and/or prolonged bleeding for multiple weeks fever infection incomplete abortion (requiring surgical follow-up) nausea and vomiting diarrhea feeling dizzy or having a headache short to lasting hot flashes hemorrhage blood clots undetected ectopic pregnancy, which is life-threatening and permanent infertility for an Rh-negative mother. God sent two rescuers to save father and 2 boys in Colorado River A week ago Thursday, when the inflatable kayak a father and his two young sons were using in the Colorado River flipped over in a rapid, the family became scattered in raging waters, reported KSL-TV. Providentially, Eric Odenthal saw the terrifying crisis unfold. ODENTHAL: “I just seen the kids floating downstream, struggling.” Indeed, according to the Grand County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, “The 10-year-old was reportedly wearing a belt-pack [personal flotation device] or PFD  that inflated with a C02 cartridge. It flipped the boy over so he was face down in the water. And the 8-year-old was wearing a [life preserver] that was too big and failed to keep his head above water.” Odenthal called out to his friend, Gaar Lausman, who jumped on his paddleboard. ODENTHAL: “You need to go right now. This is really important. Get those kids out of the water.” But, while the kids were scooped up, the dad, who had not been wearing a life jacket at all, was further away and barely able to keep above water, reports FaithWire.com. ODENTHAL: “He's getting pulled by eddies. His face is barely above water.” Just when it seemed all hope was lost, as the father sunk down below the water's surface, God sent along a second Good Samaritan. A man named Daniel Wright suddenly emerged on a jet ski. ODENTHAL: “It was literally a miracle this guy showed up.” According to the Grand County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, Wright initially passed by the father because he didn't see him. WRIGHT: “Initially, I thought it was just kind of debris in the water.” It wasn't until the man on the paddleboard got his attention that he turned around and found him. For his part, Wright scrambled to reach the father, who, at that point was reaching his hand up out of the water in a final attempt at being rescued. WRIGHT: “He realized that was it. That was what he had left was reaching out to me.  I had to help him. I had to get him.” Once he got him safely to shore, Wright described what happened next. WRIGHT:  “I gave him a hug and I embraced him, you know, when I got him out of the water because it was an emotional moment.” Grand County Sheriff's Search and Rescue concluded its post by encouraging people to wear “properly-fitted, and properly-worn” safety gear. As for Wright, he credited the Lord for his ability to be present and help out. WRIGHT:  “I'm just really thankful and I really just think God just had me right there at the right time.” No doubt, he echoes the sentiment of Psalm 9:1. “I will give thanks to You, LORD, with all my heart. I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds.” Virginia Worldview listener shares why he gave $500 Last night, I called Danny in Abingdon, Virginia, a Worldview listener who donated $500 to help keep this newscast on the air. He explained what he appreciates. DANNY: “I just like that you all provide an option for news that is filtered through a Biblical lens so that you're reporting news and how it relates to believers in Christ, and how the Bible would speak to the news of the day. I think y'all might be the only option, that I know of, that provides that for believers. And I appreciate that and I want to support that and hope that that continues.” Danny especially likes the fact that we cite two relevant Bible verses connected to two of our weekday stories. DANNY: “When I see that Bible verses are referenced in some of the stories, it just helps me be mindful of the Biblical worldview is the truth, and that we need to constantly be bringing the stories and news reports back to the truth which is in the Holy Scriptures.” He challenged other listeners to join him and make an online donation through our website TheWorldview.com. DANNY: “I would just challenge those that value The Worldview in 5 Minutes, who support this because I think this is one of the only options that Christians have to get news from a Biblical worldview. We need to support that because it's important and there's not many other options, if any at all out there. Very valuable for believers to have that option.” 11 Worldview listeners gave $1,807 Toward our $57,100 mid-point goal by 5:00pm Central on Saturday, June 15th to fund the 6-member Worldview team for another year, 11 Worldview listeners made a donation yesterday online. Our thanks to Jay in Lees Summit, Missouri, Hannah in Leo, Indiana, Rachel in Washougal, Washington, and Christopher in Deposit, New York – each of whom gave $25. We appreciate Faith in Coeur D Alene, Idaho, Jane in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, and Jon in Newton, New Jersey – each of whom gave $50. And we thank God for the generosity of Michael in Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada who gave $150, Marcia in Franklin, Tennessee who pledged $25 per month for 12 months for a gift of $300, Katie in Hutchinson, Kansas who gave $507, and Barbara in Mesa, Arizona who pledged $50 per month for 12 months for a gift of $600. Those 11 donors gave $1,807. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $28,635 (audience cheering) By 5:00pm Central on Saturday night, June 15th, we need to raise $28,465 in order to hit our mid-point goal.  In an audience this size -- with tens of thousands who listen through the 125 radio stations which now carry us as well as through our website and the Generations app, I'm confident that 20 Worldview listeners could each pledge $100 per month for 12 months for a gift of $1,200.  Those 20 pledges would add up to $24,000.  The remaining $4,465 could be raised through smaller one-time gifts or smaller monthly pledges. Will you step up to the plate and help us raise the $28,465 we need by Saturday night at 5:00pm Central?  Please go to TheWorldview.com, click on “Give,” select the dollar amount you'd like to donate, and click on the recurring monthly tab if that's your wish. Texas judge v. Biden over sexual perversion, Muslim militants killed three Christians in Nigeria, Southern Baptist policy prohibits female pastors

It's Thursday, June 13th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Muslim militants killed three Christians in Nigeria Militants with the Islamic State West Africa Province killed three Christian men in Nigeria recently.  On June 3rd, the extremists stopped a vehicle in the northern part of the country. They allowed Muslim passengers to leave, but abducted the Christians before killing them at gunpoint. The same Islamic group carried out eight attacks against Christian villages in Nigeria back in January. The incident left 12 Christians dead. This came after the Islamic State called for militants to “kill [Christians] where you find them.” Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Nigeria is ranked sixth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian.  European Central Bank cut interest rates Last week, the European Central Bank cut interest rates for the first time in five years. It's the second major economy to do so after Canada.  The European bank lowered rates from 4% to 3.75%. The move came ahead of the European elections as voters face higher prices.   Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to keep interest rates unchanged. The Federal Reserve held the rate around 5.25% to 5.5%, the highest in over two decades. The Fed anticipates only one rate cut this year as inflation remains higher than its target of 2% annually.  Texas judge v. Biden over sexual perversion On Tuesday, a federal judge in Texas ruled against the Biden administration's attempt to protect students living sexually perverted lifestyles.  The U.S. Department of Education had issued guidance, threatening to remove funding from schools that did not accommodate students' so-called gender identity or sexual orientation.   The Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton brought the lawsuit against the Education Department. He said, “Threatening to withhold education funding by forcing states to accept 'transgender' policies, that put women in danger, was plainly illegal.” 10 Texas abortions in January Also in Texas news, the state's Health and Human Services Commission reports there were 10 abortions in the state in January.  Texas has banned nearly all abortions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The pro-life  law does allow abortions under a so-called medical necessity exception in life-of-the-mother cases.  Since July 2022, 91 abortions have been done under the exception. Before that, elective abortions averaged 2,000-3,000 per month.  Southern Baptist policy prohibits female pastors Delegates with the Southern Baptist Convention gathered over the last week for their annual meeting. Delegates considered changing the denomination's constitution to permanently prohibit women from serving as pastors. Sixty-one percent voted in favor of the amendment. However, a 66% majority is required to change the constitution.  The Southern Baptist Convention's statement of faith limits the office of pastor to men. However, nearly 2,000 SBC churches have women pastors. Crime down across America The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a report on crime during the first quarter of this year. Violent crime was down 15% compared to the same period last year. Other crime rates also decreased. Reported rapes were down 26%, robberies were down 18%, aggravated assaults were down 12%, and property crimes were down 15%.  A third of Major League Baseball has not affirmed sexual Perverse Pride month Many sports teams show their support for so-called Pride month in June. However, about a third of Major League Baseball teams have not shown that support on social media.  The Christian Post notes those teams include the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers. However, many teams still find other ways to show support.   The unique communication of African elephants Scientists have discovered that African elephants communicate with each other on an individual basis. Elephants use low-frequency rumble calls to communicate. They're out of range for human hearing but can travel long distances. The new research found the animals even have unique calls to address specific elephants.  Biologist Mickey Pardo noted, “The elephants responded much more strongly, on average, to playbacks of calls that were originally addressed to them relative to playbacks of calls from the same caller that were originally addressed to someone else.” Psalm 104:24 says, “O LORD, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions.” Newscast listener: “My wife plays The Worldview for the boys.” Last night, I picked up the phone and called Troy in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas who gave $25 toward The Worldview's month-long fundraiser to finance the 6-member team for another year. I asked him what motivated him to make a donation. TROY: “My wife plays The Worldview for the boys, for their homeschool in the morning. We have eight kids total, but we have four boys at home that she's homeschooling. So, we listen to that every morning with them and just wanted to support another good cause.” Troy listed the ages of his eight children. TROY: “I've got three girls out of the house. They're 27, 25, and 22. And then we have four boys in the house that are 11, 9, one turned 8, and then a 6-year-old. And then we have a 9-month-old girl, also.” He explained the kind of stories he likes the most. TROY: “We like to hear about our brothers and sisters [in Christ] over in other countries instead of just the junk that's on the mainstream media news. We like to hear about people we can be praying for. And my boys get to see that life isn't at all as easy as we have it over here in the U.S.” 18 Worldview listeners gave $3,125 Toward our $57,100 mid-point goal tomorrow, June 14th, 18 Worldview listeners made a donation yesterday online. Those 18 donors gave $3,125.  Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $26,828 (audience cheering) By tomorrow night, June 14th, we need to raise $30,272 in order to hit our mid-point goal.  If you haven't made a donation yet, we could really use your help right now to help fund the 6-member Worldview newscast team for another year.  Whether you give a one-time gift of $25, like Troy in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, or a monthly pledge of $100 for 12 months, like Larry and Sue in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada did, we urge you to do something! Last week, a jury convicted him on charges including aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. He received a life sentence plus 20 years and will be registered as a sex offender for life. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson condemned his actions, emphasizing the trauma inflicted on the victim and the relentless pursuit of justice by the Special Victims Unit. The victim reported the crimes in 2021, detailing instances where McKenna touched her inappropriately and attempted sexual contact. STORY 2: Cocaine trafficker sentenced to life in prison Glenn Smithson, aged 52, was recently convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole for trafficking cocaine in Gwinnett County for over three decades. The conviction followed a bench trial where he confessed to his involvement in trafficking drugs investigated in 2021. Prosecutors highlighted the efforts of law enforcement, particularly the Gwinnett County Police Narcotics Unit, in dismantling his criminal operation. Investigations revealed Smithson's activities through wiretaps and surveillance, leading to his arrest after a traffic stop where cocaine was found in his possession. This sentencing marks the end of a long history of drug-related convictions spanning 30 years. District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson emphasized the community's safety with Smithson behind bars. STORY 3: Gwinnett's judicial candidates weigh in on the court system's challenges In Gwinnett County's upcoming judicial races, candidates address pressing issues such as mental health in court proceedings and fairness in treatment. State Court Judge Shawn Bratton emphasizes civility and respect in the diverse community, while Deputy District Attorney Ramona Toole highlights the need to tackle case backlogs through proactive scheduling. In the Superior Court races, candidates stress equality and individualized approaches to justice. Juvenile Court Judge Rodney Harris advocates for equal treatment regardless of representation, while Magistrate Judge Kimberly Gallant supports treatment courts for accountability and recovery. In the race to replace retiring judges, candidates prioritize mental health support for defendants, with B. Thassanee "BT" Gutter-Parker proposing a comprehensive safety plan, Regina Matthews advocating for continued accountability court programs, and Tuwanda Rush Williams emphasizing intervention plans over incarceration for those with mental health diagnoses. Voters can explore detailed candidate responses on gwinnettdailypost.com. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Georgia prison inmate pleads guilty in meth conspiracy Christopher David Johnson, aged 46, has pleaded guilty to leading a methamphetamine conspiracy while incarcerated in a Georgia prison. He faces a minimum of 15 years to life in prison for distributing over 500 grams of meth. Johnson orchestrated the operation using multiple cellphones from prison, coordinating with accomplices through Facebook and text messages. His co-conspirator, Michael Paul Brown, was recently sentenced to 15 years for his involvement. The state budget includes $10.7 million for prison technology upgrades to prevent contraband smuggling. The U.S. DEA and law enforcement agencies from Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia investigated Johnson's case, with his guilty plea entered in federal court in Abingdon, Virginia. STORY 5: Emergency hearing on Mulberry cityhood referendum set for Thursday An emergency hearing has been scheduled by a Gwinnett Superior Court judge regarding a lawsuit aimed at halting the Mulberry cityhood referendum on the May 21 ballot. Filed by retiree Stephen Hughes, the lawsuit contends that key aspects of the proposed city's charter are unconstitutional, including limitations on property tax collection and specified city services. Hughes' attorney argues that the referendum would deceive voters, as the proposed city's structure faces legal challenges. Supporters of Mulberry cityhood, such as Georgia House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, denounce the lawsuit, alleging it is driven by special interest groups, possibly developers opposing the proposal. Citizens For Mulberry President Michael Coker maintains that cityhood enjoys community support and anticipates its passage, dismissing the lawsuit as a last-minute attempt to derail the referendum. We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: INGLES  10   STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on diabetes.   STORY 7: LEAH MCGRATH ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: SCANDRETT Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast.
