Out of Australia’s five largest cities, Brisbane residents are paying the most for fuel. A report from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission found Brisbane’s average retail petrol prices were the highest at 186.4 cents per litre. Economist and Affordability Specialist at the RACQ, Dr Ian Jeffreys, told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "Brisbane has consistently been the most expensive out of all of the large capitals." "They've said it's down to market conditions as if market conditions are somehow and on a stone tablet somewhere. But, market conditions are the choices the fuel companies make," Dr Jeffreys said.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Economists say South African motorists will have to tighten their belts as the price of fuel increased today. Both grades of petrol increased by 82 cents per litre, while diesel went up by R1.01 and R1.05 cents per litre. The increasses come as millions of South Africans struggle to keep their heads above the proverbial water, with the country's ever-rising cost of living and continuing load shedding. The increases have sparked concerns from ordinary South Africans, with households expected to fork out R1.29 cents more for illuminating paraffin at retail level, among other expences. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Road Freight Association CEO, Gavin Kelly
We haven’t even recovered from December, and our pockets must create more space for petrol, in February? Yup. On the 5th of February. This will be the FOURTH CONSECUTIVE MONTH - of Petrol INCREASES. This PRICE HIKE is BIG though - It will be around 90 cents for Petrol AND over R1 for Diesel.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
According to reports, the early months of 2025 are set to bring financial challenges for South African consumers as forecasts indicate a significant rise in the prices of white maize, a staple food, coupled with an increase in fuel costs. This double whammy poses serious concerns for households already grappling with economic pressures. The expected uptick in white maize prices stems from various factors, including fluctuating weather patterns and changes in production levels, which have historically led to shifts in agricultural output. With white maize being a crucial part of the South African diet, a hike in its price could ripple through the economy, impacting everything from meal planning to the broader food inflation rates. The South African Cereals and Oilseeds Trade Association (Sacota) pointed out the seriousness of the situation, noting that this past week South Africa imported white maize for the first time since 2017. California is facing the potential shutdown of three major gas refineries, which could slash nearly 25% of the state's refining capacity, forcing greater reliance on imported oil from unstable regions like the Middle East and South America. Governor Gavin Newsom's strict regulatory policies have been criticized for driving refineries like Phillips 66 out of business, contributing to rising fuel prices. Valero is also reconsidering operations in the state, warning that added regulations make refining less profitable. California's effort to curb price spikes through regulation may backfire, leading to even higher gas prices as domestic production shrinks. The ripple effect will not only hit California residents but also neighboring states that rely on its gasoline supply. Critics argue that these policies reflect a broader mismanagement of economic priorities, with Newsom's aggressive stance on environmental issues clashing with practical market realities.

Competition is starting to improve in the fuel market. The Commerce Commission has called out retailers for being quick to put prices up, but slow to bring them back down. They believe it's costing motorists $15 million a year. Bryan Chapple, Commerce Commission Commissioner, told Mike Hosking that there's no evidence its collusion, but rather companies just aren't incentivised to lower their prices. He said that companies such as Gull and Waitomo coming into an area and building stations forced majors to lower their prices to match. It's warning fuel companies it'll be watching prices when Auckland's regional fuel tax kicks in next month. The Government is being urgent to suspend any further fuel tax hikes in order to ease the strain on struggling Clare households. Petrol and Diesel prices have now reached their highest to date in 2024, at an average cost of €1.81 and €1.78 per litre respectively, according to the AA. Excise duty is expected to be fully reinstated in August, with a further 4c hike on Petrol and 3c on Diesel in the pipeline. Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District, Sinn Féin Councillor Donna McGettigan, says it's particularly unfair in a county with inadequate public transport.
Growing operational costs are partially to blame for an increase in domestic airfares. Air New Zealand's told travel agents domestic fares across all routes will be going up from midnight tonight. House of Travel Chief Operating Officer Brent Thomas told Mike Hosking the airline is trying to cover rising fuel prices and wage costs. “But obviously also they got an airline to run and profits to be made, and they're looking to see where they can maximise their revenue streams and their profitability.” Thomas says there is room for more flights and competition in the domestic market which could decrease the price of airfares.
