I have learned to expect the unexpected with the amazing people I get to know during these podcasts, and Raven Johnson was no different. Raven had just finished the Hellbender 100 the weekend before we recorded, and not only did she finish, but she finished 3rd female overall! Of course, I wanted to hear every detail of this journey, as I also knew that this was also her first time running the 100 mile distance. When you run ultras, it is extremely helpful to have a 'why' while you are out there...especially in the lows. You can focus in on that 'why' to help you pull through, help you get back on your feet and finish the race. What I did not expect was hearing the depth behind Raven's 'why', and I was amazed by her journey. Raven, thank you for opening up and sharing your story with me. Thank you for your vulnerability, which shows the world your undeniable strength. You are beautiful inside and out, and I feel completely honored to know a piece of your heart. Thank you. It's finally out! Brandon Thrower and Carrie Baris (co-race directors) sat down with me to go through all of the details of the new course for the Hellbender 100 coming up on May 9-10, 2025. After Hurricane Helene, so many of our beautiful trails were destroyed by falling trees and landslides. Through the hard work of so many, trails have been opening up, but it is going be quite a while before we can access Mt. Mitchell and many parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway. BUT, thankfully Hellbender can still happen, and Brandon and Carrie have worked so hard and giving everyone the best course possible for not only the runners, but their crew. Listen as they describe the course in detail, required gear, aid stations, crew and pacer information, and more. Thank you to all involved in bringing this race to fruition . This new year, there has been a lot of buzz about how short-lived most people's commitment to their resolutions are.  Pat and Bret discussed that trend, and the fact that restaurants don't pile on the better-for-you limited-time offers in early January the way they used to. Instead, they start rolling out later in the month, possibly in anticipation of slimming-down efforts that are renewed in the spring. They rounded out the podcast with an interview Bret conducted with Yara Herrera, chef and partner at Hellbender in the Queens, New York, neighborhood of Ridgewood, who discussed the changing role of women chefs, her sourcing strategy and some of her favorite dishes. Today on the pod I speak with Jeff Betten, founder of Hellbender Vinyl in Pittsburgh, PA who gives us a peak behind the curtain of their facility. Open for just under two years now, Hellbender has quickly developed a reputation for quality and creative solutions. As Jeff says "if you can dream it up, we can make it happen". That local DNA isn't lost on them, including their mission statement: "Hellbent on quality. Hellbent on service. One of America's most trusted vinyl record pressing plants". Toby brewed up meaningful insight about her role in the movie as a witch; providing details as to why the movie was written the way it was and also explaining the Mother/Daughter dynamic in which I believe has the "Carrie" vibe that casted a new spell of their relationship to a whole new level. I must admit that the movie is very unique and profound with the special effects and makeup, especially the energy that was being channeled while filming. I also have to admire their creativeness and motivation - what drives them to make such excellent movies? We also touched on two other films: "Where the Devil Roams" and the most recent release, "Hell Hole" which is now streaming on Shudder. Talking to Toby has definitely led me to believe that the Adams Family will continue to keep the audience spellbound with their cultivation in the horror community. For those that have not seen their movies, I highly suggest that you do, you will not be disappointed! Overall, great interview and I am hoping to speak to the rest of the family in the future.

They opened their doors at the end of 2022 and started filling orders at the start of 2023. They specialize in all things vinyl. In Jeff's words, “if you can dream it up. We can do it!” - After spending the majority of his life playing music, Jeff Betten acquired a local record label. As time went on, his artists started to show interest in getting some of their work pressed on vinyl. Quickly realizing this was not going to be as easy as he'd hoped, Jeff figured why not try and put one in Pittsburgh! - This week, he stops by the studio and talks to me all about Hellbender Vinyl origin story and what the day to day of at the city's first fully customizable record pressing plant consists of. In S4Ep15 of the PRP Adam symposiums with seasoned ultramarathoner, fly fishing fanatic and all around family man extraordinaire Carl Jarema, who has been preparing for the Bigfoot 200 on August 9th, 2024. Dan Hughes, Huron 100 race director, passionate nature enthusiast and frequent flier on the PRP joins the show (again) to weigh in on all things Carl, 200's and what to focus on when choosing your next race. The lads pontificate on the new and emerging 200+ mile subculture that is continually growing and bolstering staggering momentum in the ultramarathon world. Are 200's the new 100's? What is so unique about this insane distance? How the hell do you prepare for an outing like this and what kind of planning and logistics are required to succeed in such an endeavor? Things get vulnerable when the conversation shifts to balancing Carl's love for ultramarathoning, a time intensive hobby, with his passion for being a father. From scout leader, to assist coaching, to fishing czar, to camping captain - Carl balances a whole hell of a lot on a daily basis. Through the struggles of making it all come together, Carl is quick to admit that none of his wilderness ventures would be possible without the strong partnership he has cultivated with his wonderful wife, Cindy. Carl's success on the trail has been and always will be a team effort, and at the end of the day he's learned to take what he can get and move on. Don't get caught up in the folly that is following a training plan to a tee. Things don't always go to plan and it sure as hell ain't always perfect - a lesson he's learned from fatherhood that has translated to his love for running quite seamlessly.  What the hell is a Leki lean? Gandalf of Grayling?! Is Carl a big man of Michigan?? What is Protect the Porkies and why should you know more about it? Tim the Toolman Taylor?! Tyin flies?! Ham & chee? Mount St. Helens?? Mousing?! S/O to Hellbender! Ey bro, what kind of bug is that?! Electricians?! Bryce Canyon?? Blast zones, orange drank and wizards, oh my!  This and so much more in this encouraging, pragmatic and hilarious episode of the PRP. How Are you After a Poor Race or DNF? Let's Talk! Episode 236

The MR Runningpains Podcast

Racing is hard enough. After a poor performance or DNF, it makes the next race even tougher to mentally and physically prepare for. Here are my thoughts for moving forward!   Podcast on Analyzing your race/event: https://runningislifepodcast.podbean.com/e/so-you-had-a-bad-race-here-s-the-next-steps-w-personal-notes-episode-95/   Books: "Puke & Rally" by Rob Bell "Do Hard Things" by Steve Magness   Truly Tough XC Classic 5k - Sept. 28 - https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=118288   My notes: 1. Accept a bad race or DNF is a possibility. We must acknowledge this fact, but also understand that a DNF does not define us. At the same time, we must recognize when a good race happens. Heart Breaker vs Hellbender. My string of tough 100s. 2. Remember that training is the journey. Enjoy the process. Race days are the celebration of the journey. We certainly can have a hard time celebrating a bad race. High Lonesome for instance was tough to celebrate even though I finished. While I was certainly proud of the fact I finished, I had a very hard time processing the race and what went so wrong so early. What I did remember was the 2 weeks leading up to the race and the time I spent with my daughter during those 2 weeks and her paying me to the finish. 3. The sting and disappointment we feel after a bad race or a DNF stems from the amount we care about the results of our goal event. In honesty, I don't know why some races are easier to let go than others. Hellbender means the world to me and I didn't finish, but I was ok with that due to being sick. Maybe that was due to the fact that I knew I could take another crack at HB vs feeling awful for 80 miles at HiLo knowing I had spent a lot of money to be out there early and acclimate, and things still went sideways. Again, I'm honestly not sure. Our thoughts and emotions are so complex. My point here is that it is ok to react in whatever way you need to even if it leaves you shrugging your shoulders in confusion. There aren't always answers and our brains have a hard time dealing with that. 4. Questioning our decisions about this sport and what's next after a bad race or DNF of a goal event can be very difficult! It's times like these I turn to resources of people that have experienced this. Currently I am reading “Puke & Rally” by Dr Rob Bell. Puking is our bad race & rally is our comeback or at least next step. After 6 really hard 100 mile races, I was left questioning whether I was really wanting to do any more. Is there something worth going after? Does something still excite me with the possibility of that event not going to plan? Those questions rattled around in my brain and if I'm real with you, they are still valid questions I'm sorting through. Do I need to train for something? Do I need a goal to enjoy my running? These are all hard questions to answer. I've recognized that my focus on training has shifted from my own to those I coach (all age groups included here). The importance I place on my own training has diminished significantly and I recognize that just getting out for a simple run is enough for me. I simply cannot devote the time I once did to training. A harsh reality, but one I am ok with. That said, I recognize that the possibility for a bad race or a DNF is higher now. So the question becomes, how do I scratch the itch for a long day in the mountains? That's where the BRUTES Challenge came in. BRUTES matches where I am with not only my training, but my mental state. You have to find that match for yourself. There's nothing wrong with just running and not having a goal. For myself, I've simply had something to work towards for my entire 34 years of running. COVID lockdown made me realize that I enjoy having something to work towards. Sometimes that something takes us awhile to figure out, and that's ok as well. Best to find something that inspires you then to just settle for an event that you just go through the motions to complete and lack joy and enjoyment in your training. 5. Another book that bears reading (rereading) is Steve Magness' “ Do Hard Things”. Magness reminds us that without challenge or the uncertainty of completion that comes with setting a goal, we can lack motivation or simply caring enough to get ourselves out there and train. It's by setting ourselves up for these challenges that we are able to test our limits and find out what it is that we are truly capable of. When I look back at HiLo, I have to admit, I'm pretty proud of the mental grit I have. It's those moments, when you're at your lowest that you truly find out who you really are! And THAT right there is why I continue to get after it!   Aaron's information: If you'd like to learn more about Patreon or to donate, please visit https://www.patreon.com/RunningIsLife My Socials, Channels, & Newsletter:https://www.facebook.com/MRRUNNINGPAINSCOACHING https://www.instagram.com/runningislifecoaching/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ6J512qA34z_N0KJSU4jfw https://www.strava.com/athletes/18431982  Email - coachsaft@gmail.com Thanks to all of you for listening! So much to say about Carrie Baris, the co-race director of the Hellbender 100. Yes, she is an ultra runner, but she is also very successful in the equestrian sports of endurance riding and ride & tie. I was absolutely fascinated to dig into both of these equestrian sports to find out how they operate and how they correlate to endurance running. One thing I learned is that I HAVE to try ride & tie...combining both running and riding a horse. Sounds like an absolute dream to me! Carrie is also the queen of National Parks...with a goal to visit every single park out there to honor her late husband and their adventures together. Such an epic goal, and she is well on her way to checking them all off the list. Carrie is also completely selfless. She puts others, animals, and family above herself...always looking out for their needs and desires first, and this is so evident when you get into a conversation with her. Yes, I wanted her to talk about her races and accomplishments, but she really lit up when she talked about her sister, her horse, her puppy and her fiancé. What a beautiful soul she is. Hellbender 100 didn't go as planned. This episode goes into why. I also discuss my essay for my application for Badwater 135 (actual letter is below).  Here's my Post from Facebook after Hellbender: I've learned something over the 3 decades I've been running. When we line up for a race, no matter how much we've trained and prepared, the race and life in general owes us nothing. The reality is we owe running & life a tremendous amount for what it does for & to us! Running and many coaches, friends, family members, and mentors have transformed me to find my current mindset. A DNF does not diminish or define who I am or what I can accomplish. It makes me take a deeper dive into a. What happened? b. What can I do better? & c. How can I train smarter (not necessarily harder)? It also makes me reflect upon life, the choices I make, my priorities, and what I'm doing to make this world a little better. Running Is Life is a mantra. I live it, I breathe it, and I grasp to understand and apply it on a daily basis. Keep moving forward my friends!   Essay for Badwater 135: It's hard to create a story that's still in progress! It's also tough to tell a story that's pretty darn common. Sure, I've done and experienced some amazing things in my life, but to be honest, so have many others. So I had to ask myself, what separates me from everyone else? Let me go back to 2016, and humor me for a moment with a flashback. In said year, I was running Dr David Horton's now defunct Beast Series. I had completed 3 50k's by April and the remainder of my calendar for that year was as follows: June - Cayuga 50-miler & the Manitou's Revenge 50-miler July - Canadian Death Race 125k Oct. - Grindstone 100-miler Nov. - Mountain Massochist 50-miler Dec. - Hellgate 100k A Daunting & challenging schedule with the hope of winning both the Lynchburg Ultra Series & the Beast Series (which I did). But that's only part of the 2016 story. In the midst of all of this, I was in The Runner's World Magazine Cover Contest. A finalist no less. A panel of judges had selected 5 male & 5 female contestants for the honor of being the winner of this contest and having their picture on the front of the magazine. I know for some, print media is dead, but I grew up with this magazine and eagerly read every article. To be a finalist for this was a dream come true! So how did I get to that point? Everything about my running stems from love. With and through running, I can do so much more than just go for a run. I can take an individual sport, and at times selfish activity, and make it about others. I created races that raised money for nonprofit organizations, I donated & sponsored races that did the same. I became a coach and mentor to younger and older runners. The point being is I tried to share my love for running and life with others so that they might do the same. To give the idea that life is about others and the change we can make and impact we can have when we put others first and use our talents and abilities to make a difference. As the internet will show, I didn't win, but I experienced something that changed my life and way of thinking. I met some truly amazing friends that have much more amazing stories than my own. And that's what makes running so amazing. Each race we run has a limited number of runners. Those runners all have stories of how that got to that starting line. Badwater has shown this each year it's run.  Since the Runner's World Contest, my professional life has gone from Running Store owner and race director to a running coach and podcaster. It took me a number of years to find a name for my brand that felt suitable for who I am, what I do, and what I represent. It wasn't until I watched Ted Lasso and saw the joy the character Danny Rojas exhibited for life and fútbol that I understood and found a name that resonated with me… “Running is Life”! That simple phrase/name struck a cord so deep that it's hard to express how much it reflects my love for it and how it affects my thoughts, actions, and deeds. How such a simple few words can say everything. Running is Life! My story may not be the most compelling, but instead of remaining an individual, I've become part of the community. I serve that community with my experience. As I try to reach each finish line, I know that I will help countless others do the same by learning from my own experiences. All I need is the opportunities to continue to grow, to learn, and to evolve. I believe Badwater is one of those experiences that will do so! As I mentioned earlier, my story is incomplete. Will one of those blank chapters be filled with pages about the Badwater 135? Again, it's up to a committee to decide what's added to my story. In races, we don't deserve anything but the experience of what the day gives us. All we ask is for that opportunity to see what that day has in store for us. I know running Badwater is in part for my own sake, but I realize, and I hope I've conveyed, that it will impact many other lives in the process and aftermath as well. I sincerely appreciate your time & consideration! I hope to see you in 2025!
