She wasn't a standout athlete growing up and could barely run a mile when she joined her first run club in her twenties. Fast forward a decade and Sara is a trail runner, community builder, volunteer, and newly minted Hellbender 100 finisher. In this episode, Sara shares how a canceled 30th birthday party during the pandemic turned into a 30-mile challenge that launched her ultra running journey. From her first half marathon to running the Cruel Jewel 50 as a qualifier, Sara's story is one of persistence, curiosity, and embracing the unknown. The conversation dives deep into her first 100-mile experience at Hellbender, where a perfect race quickly turned into a masterclass in problem-solving. Foot pain, blisters, shoe issues, and an unexpected reaction to wool socks tested her resolve, but quitting was never on the table. Sara talks openly about leaning on her crew, pacers, volunteers, and the larger trail running community to make it to the finish line. The episode also explores Sara's passion for community building through SNARC (Sylva and Neighboring Area Run Club), her one-for-one commitment to volunteering for every race she runs, and a fundraising effort supporting Vecinos, an organization serving farm workers and underserved communities in Western North Carolina. In This EpisodeGoing from non-runner to ultramarathonerThe Yeti 30-for-30 challenge that changed everythingRunning Cruel Jewel 50 to qualify for HellbenderBuilding SNARC from the ground upWhy welcoming new runners mattersLessons learned from a difficult first 100 milerThe importance of crew, pacers, and volunteersSupporting Vecinos through Hellbender fundraisingSara's Dirtbag Spinster SubstackKey TakeawaySometimes success isn't about having the perfect race. What unfolds is an honest and vulnerable conversation about setbacks, growth, mental toughness, and what it really means to keep showing up when things get hard.Troy opens up about his running journey—from growing up around endurance sports, to rediscovering running after losing both his mother and his dog in the same week, to eventually falling in love with trail and ultra running after reading Born to Run. The conversation also dives deep into Troy's first 100-mile DNF at Dark Divide and how that experience forced him to reevaluate his mindset, priorities, and relationship with chasing qualifiers for races like Western States and Hardrock. The heart of the episode centers around Hellbender 100, one of the toughest races on the East Coast. Troy shares how this training block was the strongest of his life, the nutrition struggles and sleep deprivation he battled during the race, and how support from family, friends, and the trail community helped carry him through the darkest moments of the night. Some key themes from the episode include:Using running as a tool for resilience and mental healthLearning from failure and difficult race experiencesThe balance between chasing qualifiers and enjoying the sportTraining consistency, durability, and strength workManaging low moments during ultras and continuing forwardThe importance of community in trail runningThis one is raw, relatable, and full of those classic MidPacker moments where everyday runners chase extraordinary goals.Relevant LinksHellbender 100Run828 FoundationLaurel Highlands UltraHellbender Participant GuideHellbender Course InfoLaurel Highlands Hiking TrailPartner Links: PlayOn Relief - https://playonrelief.comAll Natural, Fast Acting, Long Lasting, Targeted ReliefUse MIDPACKER for 20% off your first orderTraining PeaksA training app as versatile as you. 20 years ago, automation was a pipe dream for industrial workers, 10 years ago it existed in research and development labs. Now it's fully operational in warehouses, production facilities and even mines. The companies driving robotics forwards are going one step further than developing smarter AI. They're figuring out how to apply that advanced engineering to ‘gritty' manufacturing – and there are few places that understand that world better than the Steel City.Pittsburgh has become an important ecosystem for developing autonomous technologies, the combination of engineering talent and thriving industrial background has turned it into somewhat of a testing ground for physical AI.Recorded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this was a special live show in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Robotics Network. Chris is joined by three industry leaders to talk about adopting autonomy in critical industries. Brett Phillips is Chief Revenue Officer and General Council at Hellbender, specializing in on-edge AI hardware development. David Griffin is Chief Sales Officer at Seegrid, manufacturer of autonomous mobile robots. Mike Smocer is CEO of Mine Vision Systems, a mining technology company building real-time digital mapping systems for GPS denied environments. They dig into how autonomy is moving beyond one-off projects, and into fully integrated systems. Brett breaks down how the incorporation of sensors and models are shrinking development timelines for autonomous systems and why Pittsburgh's willingness to ‘get their hands dirty' is key. David explains how advances in perception and control systems have pushed AMRs beyond basic pallet moves into large, complex material moves through busy logistics environments. Mike shares how Mine Vision Systems support vital underground decision making with millions of dollars of impact by replacing manual mapping and tribal knowledge with accurate digital records. For anyone considering where robotics and AI can create value inside their operations, thinking about the intersection between advanced software and manufacturing, or curious why Pittsburgh has become so strong in robotics and autonomy, this episode is a look at how three industry leaders are managing that change today. In this episode, find out: • About the technological advances that shifted autonomy from isolated deployments to a broader ecosystem covering manufacturing, logistics, mining and warehouse operations.• How David explains the evolution of AMRs within lifting, going from limited pallet moves to an all-in-one technology capable of moving any material to any location.• Why mid-tier manufacturers are becoming a major driver of autonomy adoption due to labor constraints and the positive impact of this in regional production environments.• What mining looks like without the implementation of automated systems, Mike discusses highly intelligent operators still using coloured pencils and paper to capture critical underground data.• Mining as a tunnel building process with the constant balance of optimizing extraction with breakage vs. how much time and cost is spent processing the material caused by that breakage.• How Hellbender utilizes their expertise and capability to provide an end-to-end service inhouse, getting their customers to market in a matter of months rather than years.• The role of sensors, on-edge AI, and manufacturing capability in accelerating the production of perception systems that serve as the eyes and ears of the autonomy stack.• What the conversation reveals about Pittsburgh's current position as a robotics hub where engineering talent, institutional history and manufacturing culture are allowing them to go head-to-head with the likes of Silicon Valley.Enjoying the show? Please leave us a review here. Even one sentence helps. It's feedback from Manufacturing All-Stars like you that keeps us going!Tweetable Quotes: • “At the end of the day, we are a software company. The hardware component of our product is essentially a near commodity at this point. It's the navigation systems, the safety systems, the perception systems, the control systems.” – David Griffin • ”There is a transformation involved. There's change management involved. There are workflows that if you disrupt them just because your cool technology solved one little problem, broke 12... There's an approach to developing your technology so that it succeeds not only now, but in the future.” – Mike Smocer• “What's gonna separate us moving forward is the ability to sort of mash this really high-level, very technical engineering with real-world manufacturing. That is where, uniquely, Pittsburgh stands alone.” – Brett Phillips Do you want to connect with other leaders that are moving the needle in manufacturing everyday? Then make sure to join us in the Manufacturing Happy Hour Industry Community on LinkedIn.Apprentice has developed the first AI Agent designed specifically for manufacturing, not adapted from a general model. Your team stays in control of every critical decision, because that's how real manufacturing works.Recommended Resources• Pittsburgh Robotics Network, facilitating commercial business growth and economic development opportunities for the Greater Pittsburgh region's robotics, automation, and vision communities• Seegrid, delivering customized AMR solutions that meet the changing needs of today's manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing facilities• Mine Vision Systems, maximizing efficiency and safety in underground mining operations with real-time 3D mapping technology• HELLBENDER Inc., building mission-critical hardware and software infrastructure for AI-driven perception systems in autonomy, robotics, and industrial applicationsConnect with David, Mike, and BrettDavid Griffin | Mike Smocer | Brett PhillipsMake sure to visit http://manufacturinghappyhour.com for detailed show notes and a full list of resources mentioned in this episode. Episode 165 of The Running Mullet drops this Monday at 7:30pm.It was a massive weekend in the trail and ultra world, and we're breaking it all down. We've got highlights from the Eagleton Trail Challenge: a race that's been growing for years in the PA Wilds. From the shorter, runnable 10K and 25K to the more demanding 47K, Eagleton delivers a full spectrum of effort across technical terrain. We'll talk about what stood out, how the courses actually run, and why this race is carving out a real identity in the Eastern ultra scene.Out west, Cocodona 250 delivered the usual mix of grit, strategy, and survival. There is so much to celebrate from this year's race, as runners from the United States and beyond take on - and complete - one of the toughest 200+ mile tests in the country. Big efforts, big swings, and the kind of race that at only six years in, runners have on their bucket lists. Closer to home, Miller Mountain brought the grind, while the Hellbender 100 delivered one of the toughest mountain hundreds in the East. Big vert, rugged terrain, and zero margin for error — this is a race that demands respect. We'll recap how they all played out and who rose to the challenge. If you ran, crewed, followed along, or just want to stay plugged into what's happening in the ultra scene right now, this is the episode.Monday. 7:30pm. What does it actually take to make a horror film that matters? Not a studio green light. Not a VFX budget. Not a catering line. This month, Chelsea Stardust curates three films that answer that question on their own uncompromising terms. Jeremy Gardner's The Battery strips the zombie apocalypse down to two former baseball players, a Discman, and a friendship slowly coming apart at the seams. Starry Eyes follows a young actress as the machinery of Hollywood ambition grinds her into something unrecognizable — and possibly exactly what she always wanted to be. And Hellbender, made by a real family in their real backyard, turns the mother-daughter relationship into a folk horror inheritance no one asked for and no one can refuse.Together, these three films share a preoccupation with death and rebirth — not as plot mechanics, but as the thing transformation actually costs. Chelsea, Pete, Kynan, and Tommy dig into what it means to make something from almost nothing, and why the best low-budget horror isn't resourceful so much as honest.Featured FilmsTonight's Triple Feature:The Battery - Apple TV | Amazon Starry Eyes - Apple TV Hellbender - Apple TV | AmazonView Our List on Letterboxd (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (03:34) - The Battery (28:49) - Starry Eyes (50:01) - Hellbender (01:09:23) - Coming Attractions Support The Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Become a member for just $5/month or $55/yearJoin our Discord community of movie loversThe Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Cinema Scope: Bridging Genres, Subgenres, and MovementsThe Film BoardMovies We LikeThe Next ReelSitting in the DarkConnect With Us:Main Site: WebMovie Platforms: Letterboxd | FlickchartSocial Media: Facebook | Instagram | Threads | Bluesky | YouTube | PinterestYour Hosts: Chelsea | Kyle | Kynan | Pete | Tommy Shop & Stream:Merch Store: Apparel, stickers, mugs & moreWatch Page: Buy/rent films we've discussedOriginals: Source material from our episodesSpecial offers: Audible

Send a textIt's that time of year, and the curse is still with us. The Winter of Folk Horror is back! A mother is compelled to educate her daughter when she discovers that use of witchcraft runs in the family in Hellbender (2021). A girl with an interest in the occult performs a spell to summon a spirit to kill her own mother in Pyewacket (2017). And then from there, a young woman reluctantly visits her grandparents and discovers a dark secret in Best Wishes to All (2023).
Please welcome to A Year In Horror, special guests The Adams Family, a crack squad of film makers that share bloodlines. We chat about their 2022, masterwork, H6LLB6ND6R. Not only that but they are in a band that features in the movie & would you believe it. They named that Hellbender. What's in a name?
This month on Sitting in the Dark, we go big: big monsters, big fear, and big systems that respond to catastrophe with the confidence of a guy who just Googled “what is monster” on his way into the meeting. Kynan, Chelsea Stardust, Tommy Metz III, and Pete Wright take on three modern giant-creature films—Bong Joon-ho's The Host (2006), André Øvredal's Troll Hunter (2010), and Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One (in its Minus Color presentation)—and find a weirdly consistent thread across wildly different cultures: when the giant thing shows up, the institutions mostly don't.The Host kicks things off with tonal whiplash as a feature, not a bug. The film's mix of grief, comedy, and political bite becomes its own kind of monster, and the conversation circles what Bong is really lampooning, what still lands, and what hits differently on a rewatch. The creature design gets its due too—full daylight, hard to pin down, impossible to “know”—but what lingers is the movie's sense that people become collateral long before anything with teeth arrives.Troll Hunter shifts the vibe without letting you off the hook. The group gets into the found-footage push-pull—shaky cam, “why are you still filming,” all that—then pretty quickly agrees that Hans, the deadpan troll hunter, is the secret weapon. The film's charm is how seriously it takes the ridiculous premise: folklore becomes logistics, mythology becomes fieldwork, and the jokes don't erase the danger. It's one of those movies that makes you laugh… then reminds you you'd die immediately.Godzilla Minus One brings it home with a version of Godzilla that's less “spectacle” and more “reckoning.” The group talks about the postwar setting, the human story at the center, why the black-and-white presentation changes the feel of the effects, and how this movie earns its impact through quiet scenes as much as destruction.Across all three films, the episode keeps returning to the same uncomfortable idea: these are blue-collar fights. The people who do anything meaningful aren't the polished experts. They're ordinary, exhausted, under-resourced, and improvising. Which might be the scariest part.Next month, Chelsea flips the table for her birthday picks with an ultra low-budget lineup: The Battery (2012), Hellbender (2021), and Starry Eyes (2014).

This week we hit the Beat Dungeon for Punk Rock and Witchcraft in Hellbender. We discuss this Shudder Original's blend of the mother/daughter tale and witchcraft, how the movie harvest more with less than most flicks, and the lore of these demonic predators the Hellbenders. Synopsis: A teen and her mother live simply in a home in the woods, spending their time making metal music. A chance encounter with a fellow teen causes her to uncover a connection between her family and witchcraft, which causes a rift with her mother. We are once again joined by the incredibly talented Adams Family. Toby Poser, John Adams, and Zelda Adams joined me to talk about their new film Mother of Flies, which premieres on Shudder on January 23rd. We have previously chatted for Hellbender, and I have been a super fan since. The Adams create terrifying stories as a family, which allows for such creative expression as you will see in this film. Doing interviews like this one is my favorite because I get to dig into so much, since much of the project has been done by a small team. The family gives insight into their process, editing, and so much more about the film. For a film grappling with life, death, and the nature of things, it perfectly captures the horrors of the in-between. Mother of Flies follows Mickey (Zelda Adams), who faces a deadly diagnosis, but she isn't ready to die yet. Heading into the woods with her father (John Adams), she seeks dark magic at the hands of a mysterious recluse, Solveig (Toby Poser), who has an intimate relationship with death and roots that go deep in the land. For three days, Mickey endures Solveig's extreme rituals of death magic. But every cure has its cost, and every curse is another's gift. As buried secrets claw their way to the surface, the veil between the living and the dead begins to unravel, and Mickey finds herself facing dark truths that only the dead and the dying can know. John Adams, Toby Poser, and daughters Lulu and Zelda Adams (collectively known as The Adams Family) have been making films under the creative marquee of Wonder Wheel Productions since 2010. Features include The Deeper You Dig (2019, Dark Sky Films), Hellbender (2021, Shudder), Where the Devil Romas (2023, Tubi), and Mother of Flies (2025, Shudder). The family's films have been represented by Yellow Veil Pictures for sales, festivals, and theatrical runs since 2021. John and Toby also directed the sci-fi feature Hell Hole (2024, Shudder) and the episode 'Plastic Smile' for Screambox's "Tales from the Void" (2024). The soundtrack for Adams Family films is performed by the family's band, H6LLB6ND6R.

The Trump administration plans to weaken the Endangered Species Act, and that could impact the fate of an ancient creature found in Appalachia: the eastern hellbender salamander. The Allegheny Front's Julie Grant recently visited a new preserve dedicated to hellbenders and found not only natural history – but American history. Raised in Kentucky now residing in Asheville,NC Nickole Brown -- poet, writing teacher, and animal rescue volunteer -- shares her love for our wild animal and farmed animal kin with "In Tune to Nature" host Carrie Freeman in this lovely 50-minutes conversation. We enjoy hearing Nickole reading the emotive poem "Mercy" from her award-winning chapbook "To Those Who Were our First Gods" and three poems as essays from her book "The Donkey Elegies." Carrie discusses the many clever, compassionate, and compelling messages found within each poem that truly helps us hear and see fellow animals for the beautiful individuals they are. We question how our society may be diminishing the worth of other animal communities, as we sometimes do with fellow humans. Hopefully we can build solidarity between humans of all classes and animals of all other species. You can read some of Nickole's poetry and find all her books at her website https://www.nickolebrown.org/ . And eco writers/poets may want to check out the Hellbender Gathering of Poets, a conference she has organized in the Western NC mountains (named after the Hellbender salamander in the Appalachian mountains that she loves). "In Tune to Nature" is a weekly hour-long radio show airing Wednesdays at 6pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station) hosted by me, Carrie Freeman, or friend Melody Paris. The show's website and my contact info can be found at https://wrfg.org/intunetonature/ While there, consider donating to Radio Free Georgia, a 50+ year old progressive, non-commercial, indie radio station, run largely by volunteers like me. A couple months ago that we spun the wheel of random movies and selected 10 on the show. Well we finally watch them all and have a lot of thoughts. What a random mix of films, some very good, some very, very bad. Check out the highlight at the top of our Instagram profile for which movies we picked and where you can watch them, largely for free. We learned how Gene Kelly broke into Hollywood, we debate the empowerment vs exploitation of extensive nude scenes, and in a totally separate movie Jake worries he may have accidentally downloaded and sent Dustin porn with a yeti in it. ....yeah.Before that, Dustin gives spoiler free first impressions of the remade "Salem's Lot (2024) and also M3GAN 2.0. Jake of course is watching Love is Blind: Denver and The Golden Bachelor, but actually has important recommendations in "Chad Powers" and a really unique indie film called "Hellbender" (2021).----Special thank you to Alan Hlavacek and Travis Mason from Attack on Venus for the sick theme music! Chef Yara Herrera, a native of Los Angeles, worked in some of LA's most demanding kitchens (Spago, Providence, Majordomo) before moving to New York City and Momofuko Ko. During the pandemic, after gaining attention for her own food in pop-up form, she was approached by the owners of Rolo's--the hit restaurant in Ridgewood, Queens--about partnering on a Mexican-American restaurant, which came to be in the form of Hellbender. In this free-ranging conversation, Yara discusses her circuitous route to the kitchen and why it took several years to begin exploring the cuisine of her own heritage.Huge thanks to Andrew Talks to Chefs' presenting sponsor, meez, the recipe operating software for culinary professionals. She's all about honoring her roots while rewriting the rules. Listen in as we talk cooking with Martha Stewart, interrupting David Chang during a private moment, why ketchup is torture and the pressure of opening her first restaurant, that came with quite the pivot. @yaraherrerayara Mentions: @sobremasanyc @sobremasatortilleria @summerfallsake @ribkingnyc @empire_bbq@smoke_sweats @spagobh @katsuyabysbe @providencela @majordomola @davidchang @seanalexgray @rolosnyc @marthastewart @lindustriebk @decades.pizza @frankelsdeli @innout @claud_nyc @joshuaj88

Shannon Howell...what can I say to explain the level of athleticism, grit, dedication and talent this woman possesses? I first heard of Shannon when I ran the Heartbreaker 50 mile (which she won), and so I decided to look her up on Ultrasignup. Whoa...79 races recorded, and she finished on the podium more than half of these. Mind blowing. Absolutely amazing. So many iconic races she has been able to participate in, and I must say I am a wee bit jealous of her experiences! I could not wait to talk to her, and our conversation did not disappoint. Her running journey is inspiring to put it mildly. We talked about so many of her races and training, and we dove into her experience at Hellbender, but one thing that stood out to me throughout our conversation was her love of people. Whether that was on her group runs or during races, she continued to mention the people she has met and the connections she has made across the country and around the world. As someone that is shy around people I don't know (yes, that's me!), this was so impactful. Her love for trail running and her the joy she finds in others will only help this sport grow and thrive. We need more people like this in all of our lives. Thank you, Shannon, for being an inspiration in so many ways. By the way, this is my first episode recording over the phone and not in person! I was able to FaceTime Shannon, where I could at least see her face-to-face, but she did not have to travel to me to record. I recently decided to take a leap and purchase new equipment to where I can interview guests from anywhere, and I am so excited about this new development!Shannon's Instagram: http://instagram.com/runshanyrunShannon's Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/9214319Follow us on Instagram! @facingvertThank you so much for listening!
I have learned to expect the unexpected with the amazing people I get to know during these podcasts, and Raven Johnson was no different. Raven had just finished the Hellbender 100 the weekend before we recorded, and not only did she finish, but she finished 3rd female overall! Of course, I wanted to hear every detail of this journey, as I also knew that this was also her first time running the 100 mile distance. When you run ultras, it is extremely helpful to have a 'why' while you are out there...especially in the lows. You can focus in on that 'why' to help you pull through, help you get back on your feet and finish the race. What I did not expect was hearing the depth behind Raven's 'why', and I was amazed by her journey. Raven, thank you for opening up and sharing your story with me. Thank you for your vulnerability, which shows the world your undeniable strength. You are beautiful inside and out, and I feel completely honored to know a piece of your heart. Thank you. If you want to follow or reach out to Raven, here are some ways...Raven's Instagram: @ravenrunswildRaven's Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/56373121Thank you so much for listening! In this episode the gang discusses a witch family of sorts. They're not really witches... but let's be real, they're totally witches.
