Throughout the tragic events of the past few months -- and despite the tragic events still to come -- love still perseveres and flourishes. From an unlikely pandemic wedding to the bond formed between researcher and patient, this episode will examine the powerful love that sustains us during this time. Our first story is from Melanie Hamlett, a Moth-slam-winning storyteller and writer currently based in France. After a life of proud singlehood, Melanie considers settling down during the pandemic. (Just a warning -- this story is a bit "R-rated"!) As always, find photos and transcripts of all of our stories on our website. After Melanie’s story, our host speaks with Joanne Davila, professor of psychology at Stony Brook University, about how the pandemic is affecting relationships. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this episode on Monday! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

A Classic RISK! Singles episode. A story that Melanie Hamlett first shared on the podcast in September of 2014 about an unforgettable Passion Play.
Vi talar om emotionellt arbete och det ogripbara begäret. Läsning: "Women aren't nags - We're just fed up" av Gemma Hartley och "Men have no friends and women bear the burden" av Melanie Hamlett, båda publicerade av Haarpers Bazaar.
This week's episode was inspired a Harper's Bazar article written by Melanie Hamlett. Here's a small excerpt from the piece.. "In our culture, men have always found ways to be near each other, but it’s never been centered around feelings,” he explains. “Men are taught the remedy to heartbreak is to get drunk with your buddies, objectify women, and go out and get laid; to basically distance yourself from your feelings and channel them into an aggressive outlet. We use sports as an excuse to bump up against each other, so desperate we are for human touch and intimacy. But this kind of closeness is based in camaraderie and aggression, not vulnerability and trust. The former is very surface level and not nearly as satisfying as the latter." This week on Work Bae, it’s all about the fellas! Whether you consider them your “boys”, your “bros” or your “dogs” (are men still using that one?) Men and the relationships they have with one another have always seemed ideal to Naana, but Obie drops a bomb that there is often a lack of emotional connection in their friendships. We discuss the toll that plays on men and how that affects all those around them, especially the women in their lives who tend to carry a lot of that emotional baggage.
