Nicole Tapscott, Chief Commercial Officer at Knix, dissects the anatomy of category disruption in an era where authenticity trumps algorithms. Drawing from two decades of scaling high-growth consumer brands like Casper and Mejuri, Tapscott reveals how Knix has redefined the intimate apparel industry into a movement of destigmatization through authentic celebrity partnerships. The conversation unpacks strategic insights on navigating the post-DTC landscape, premium retail expansions, data-driven personalization, and omnichannel orchestration—essential intelligence for building next-generation brands that thrive on vulnerability. PLUS: We talk Knix's latest campaign with Kristen Bell and the first U.S. store opening in New York City.Customers Are Already Telling You the AnswerKey takeaways:Next-gen brands prioritize channel agnosticism over DTC exclusivity - Success comes from meeting customers where they are, whether that's TikTok Shop, Nordstrom, or intimate retail experiences designed for vulnerable conversations.Cultural barrier-breaking requires authentic celebrity partnerships - Kristen Bell's decade-long customer relationship with Knix created campaign authenticity that audiences could immediately sense, proving that real relationships trump transactional endorsements.Product innovation emerges from customer vulnerability - Knix's best product developments, from ultra-thin technology to natural fiber collections, stem directly from customer feedback about their most personal needs and experiences.Physical retail serves emotional commerce needs - In categories requiring trust and education, stores become "vulnerability corners" where trained staff facilitate intimate conversations that e-commerce cannot replicate.Mission-driven marketing survives economic pressure - As consumer spending tightens, brands with clear purpose and authentic intention will outperform those focused solely on transactions.Key Quotes:"DTC is no longer a differentiator. It's just table stakes. These brands are no longer defined by how they sell their product, but why they sell, and how they integrate into a customer's life." - Nicole Tapscott [00:08:35]"The best campaigns are based on a true insight and great representation... someone that really represents that message in a real authentic way." - Nicole Tapscott [00:15:51]"Listen to the customer. They're usually telling you the answer... The if you build it, they will come mentality of former businesses does not work. You actually have to build it where they want it." - Nicole Tapscott [00:51:16]Associated Links:Check out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? For decades, the bra industry has made billions by preying on our insecurities, dictating how our bodies "should" look. But one visionary woman is flipping the script. Meet Annette Azan, founder and CEO of Nuudii System and the creator of "boobwear"—a liberating alternative to the restrictive bra. Annette's mission is to give every woman the freedom to embrace her natural shape with confidence. Questions surrounding the line between private and public lives were among the many raised earlier this month when a video of a tech CEO and his company's HR manager embracing at a Coldplay concert went viral. In her book Strangers and Intimates, cultural historian Tiffany Jenkins explores the relatively short history of the notion of a private life. She joins David Common to explain how the phenomenon came to be, the value she thinks it holds, and why she fears it may be disappearing as technology continues to erase the line between private and public.

From Luther to Zuckerberg: Who killed Privacy?

Keen On Democracy

So who killed privacy? It's the central question of Tiffany Jenkins' provocative new history of private life, Strangers and Intimates. The answer, according to Jenkins, is that we are all complicit—having gradually and often accidentally contributed to privacy's demise from the 16th century onwards. Luther started it by challenging Papal religious authority and the public sacraments, thereby creating the necessity of private conscience. Then came Enlightenment philosophers like Locke and Hobbes who carved out bounded private political and economic spheres establishing the foundations for modern capitalism and democracy. Counter-enlightenment romantics like Rousseau reacted against this by fetishizing individual innocence and authenticity, while the Victorians elevated the domestic realm as sacred. Last but not least, there's Mark Zuckerberg's socially networked age, in which we voluntarily broadcast our private lives to a worldwide audience. But why, I ask Jenkins, should we care about the death of private life in our current hyper-individualistic age? Can it be saved by more or less obsession with the self? Or might it require us to return to the world before Martin Luther, a place Thomas More half satiricizes Utopia, where “private life” was a dangerously foreign idea. 1. Privacy is a Historical Accident, Not a Natural Human Condition"There was a sense in which you shouldn't do anything privately that they wouldn't do publicly... This wasn't a kind of property-based private life." Jenkins argues that before the 17th century, the very concept of leading a separate private life didn't exist—privacy as we understand it is a relatively recent invention.2. Martin Luther Accidentally Created Modern Privacy Through Religious Rebellion"Luther inadvertently... authorized the self as against, in his case, the Catholic Church... if you follow the debates over the kind of beginnings of a private sphere and its expansion, whether you're reading Locke or Hobbes, there's a discussion about... the limits of authority." Luther's challenge to religious authority unintentionally created the need for private conscience, sparking centuries of development toward individual privacy.3. The Digital Age Represents a Return to Pre-Privacy Transparency"I think we do live in a period where there is little distinction between public and private, where the idea that you might keep something to yourself is seen as strange, as inauthentic." Jenkins suggests our current era of social media oversharing resembles pre-modern times more than the Victorian peak of privacy.4. Modern Loneliness Stems From Social Fragmentation, Not Individual Psychology"I sometimes wonder if we're pathologizing, actually, what is a social problem, which is a society where people are fragmented, not quite sure how to go beyond themselves... I would see that as a social problem." Rather than treating loneliness as a personal issue, Jenkins argues it reflects the breakdown of intermediate institutions between family and state.5. Technology Doesn't Determine Our Privacy—We Do"Can't blame the tech, tech isn't the problem... It comes down really to what sort of society we want to live in and how we want to be treated. That's not a technical thing. That has not to do with technology. That's to do humans." Jenkins rejects technological determinism, arguing that privacy's fate depends on human choices about social organization, not inevitable technological forces.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. With Nicola Sturgeon the latest politician to be lambasted over WhatsApp messages - or the lack of them - listen to this debate from the Battle of Ideas festival 2023 on Saturday 28 October at Church House in London. ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION From intimate selfies to leaking of personal messages, the digital age seems to relentlessly blur the boundaries between private and public. Not only are we encouraged to bare it all for social media, but the idea of private or secret communication is increasingly seen as a cover for all kinds of ‘online harms'. While the UK has backed off (for now) from enforcing Online Safety Bill provisions to remove end-to-end encryption, the widespread suspicion by government of encrypted services remains. What goes on in private group chats or messengers is said to be the site of danger, exploitation and threats to health and security. But it is not just social media or new laws that seem to threaten privacy. Indeed, official bodies are subject to endless leaks, baring the details of this or that supposedly private meeting or conversation. But perhaps this is no bad thing: debate about crucial issues has been widely informed by the leak of previously private correspondence, such as the over 100,000 messages between former health secretary Matt Hancock and others at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The leak revealed important information about the decisions surrounding lockdowns. But even if much valuable information was gleaned from the leak, should we be worried about the wider implications of removing the assumption of privacy? For example, many worry that recent charges against former police officers for sharing racist messages in a private WhatsApp group chat upend the principle that what we say ‘behind closed doors' is a private matter. In a similar vein, the Scottish Government's recent removal of a ‘dwelling defence' to a landmark hate-crime bill explicitly invites the courts to police what is said in private. Likewise, many campaigners point to the fact that Britain is one of the most surveilled countries in the world, with the previous privacy of walking the street or meeting friends in a pub now subject to the glare of Big Brother. But what is so valuable about privacy – and what is at risk if we lose too much of it? Should we welcome the tendency to make everything public, especially if it roots out backward attitudes or exposes those who misuse power? What's the relationship between the public and private, and where does the balance lie? “I came up with this concept to change the way that people thought about underwear.” Joanna Griffiths, founder and president of Knix, created a billion dollar category within the intimate apparel industry when she designed leak-proof period underwear.Joanna's commitment to designing products for genuine bodies and real-life situations led to incredible success for a brand that champions diversity and inclusivity. Through comprehensive research and testing, she developed high-quality, comfortable period underwear tailored to authentic needs. Beyond product development, Joanna's intuition guided pivotal business choices, including her fundraising approaches and her decision to part ways with retail partners who didn't align with Knix's core values.Joanna's story is both enlightening and raw. Unlike many polished tales of entrepreneurship, she honestly shares challenges she faced, dispelling the misconception that business success happens instantaneously.Key Takeaways:When you have to make a decision that's going to impact your business, good or bad, you have to trust your instinct. Believe in yourself and set your own parameters. It's your company and your rules, so set them. Find a tribe of female founders that are going through it, too.Quotes:“I look back and there were certain moments and I have distinct memories of moments where I should have said something back, like something so rude was said to me that I should have walked out and I didn't. And I wish I had, because when you just sit there and you eat it and you accept it, I know for sure that person has gone on to say bad things to multiple people, you know? Because they felt like it was totally appropriate.” (33:55 | Joanna)“I think you're nervous in the beginning to say no, because you're never sure if another opportunity is gonna come around. And one of the things that I've realized, like, you know, now being at this for a while and being a female founder for a while, is if we wanna see change, we all have to hold the power of no. And we have to reward the people who are good actors, and we have to say, fuck off to the ones that aren't.” (36:53 | Joanna) Connect with Joanna Griffiths:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joannaknix/Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! You can now work with Lindsay 1:1 to build and monetize your community through the same method she used to grow and scale her business. I'm pretty excited for today's podcast episode, all about lingerie. I recently asked my Instagram followers if they regularly include lingerie in sexy time, and 39% responded yes. In general, husbands were more excited about seeing their wife in lingerie than wives were enthusiastic about wearing it, which might come as no surprise to you.  Generally speaking, men are more wired to be turned on sexually by visual stimulation than women are.  However, so many women love to wear lingerie for themselves simply because they feel good and sexy in it. Besides, novelty and newness that lingerie can bring is an important part of keeping your sexual relationship vital for the long haul of marriage,  I have the pleasure of associating with Alex and Kadi, founders of EveryLove Intimates. They're a new brand of intimate wear. I've had lots of questions about lingerie, how to shop for it, how to be creative with it, why people are uncomfortable with it, how to handle situations where one spouse wants it and the other doesn't, and much more.    For more great content like this, check out the following resources: Next Level!: https://getyourmarriageon.com/next-level/ Next Level Loving Virtual Intimacy Retreat:  https://getyourmarriageon.com/next-levels-virtual-lovemaking-retreat/ Website: getyourmarriageon.com Instagram: @getyourmarriageon Fun and Sexy App for your Marriage: Intimately Us

The Intimates by Joe Casey, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Jim Lee, and others is a unique Wildstorm series that didn't have a massive audience. However, for the people it did connect with, it resonated deeply. This is a smart teen superhero book that's superbly crafted with much care and consideration. The high concept of the series is that it's about a high school for superpowered teenagers. However, the emphasis in this subversive series is on teenage life, and there is a relative lack of spectacle and superheroics in comparison to other teen superhero books. Although the book was unceremoniously canceled before its time, it's absolutely worth tracking down and reading today. Our intro discussion also contains Albert's report on the recent Wonder Con in Anaheim, California. Thanks again to Corey J. Beats for producing our theme music. According to co-founders and co-CEOs Jenna Kerner and Jane Fisher, Harper Wilde, the intimates brand they launched in 2017, would not be nearly as successful as it is if it weren't for the community they built early on. Kerner and Fisher launched the DTC bra brand after previously working together on a completely different brand following business school. Though the two had very little experience in the retail space, they knew there was an opportunity for a millennial intimates brand to launch and disrupt the industry. Fast forward to 2022, and Harper Wilde has not only managed to foster a thriving community, but it has also differentiated itself in a crowded market — a feat not many brands are able to tout. To date, it's leveraged through crowdsourcing and has created a high-quality product made of well-researched raw materials — and Harper Wilde has bigger milestones ahead. For example, the company is hoping to expand into new categories later this year. Currently, Harper Wilde's online site is its primary shopping channel, but it also sells at Nordstrom in a few stores and online. “Our North Star has always been to be the next market leader in intimates. There's so much opportunity for us to continue to provide more silhouettes, more products and more sizes,” Kerner said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. “[Our customer] is asking us for more than just bras and underwear. … Now that we have her size for the most difficult garments to make, there are a lot of opportunities for us to understand how we can make other garments that fit her incredibly well and are super soft.”

In this episode of the Voice of Hope series, Dana talks about her life after being diagnosed with cancer in 2010. She also shares about AnaOno and how she came up with the idea and how it helps other people. Listen in to learn more about advocates and intimates.   “I encourage everybody to find their own place and this path no matter what they feel like it could be, you know, not everybody needs to be an advocate or an activist, but we do need allies. You know, when we can support each other, we can help raise up the voices in the work that so many in the community are doing to change things. And even if you're just cheerleading on the side, that's still advocacy, and that's still something so just stick with it and give your support where you can and I think we'll have a beautiful strong community on the other side. - Dana”   Keypoints: Get to know Dana Donofree What is AnaOno and how Dana founded it Her life after her cancer diagnosis in 2010 How fashion design helped her find her purpose And so much more!   Dana Donofree founded AnaOno out of her own necessity and desire for not only beautiful, but comfortable lingerie after her cancer diagnosis in 2010. With a degree in fashion design from Savannah College of Art and Design, and a successful industry career, she took her experience and applied it toward launching AnaOno, Intimates designed differently.
